    NO ZAKU

the rest of the threads can be found here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=zeonquest

You are Lieutenant JG David Lister, Ace Mobile Suit pilot of the Principality of Zeon forces.
Currently stationed at California base as part of 321 Company (3rd Division, 2nd Battalion, 1st Company)

It is laste April 0079 during the One Year War. Since your battle with the Federation airforces in Iowa at the start of the month, things have been quiet.
Just the occaisional patrol and training exercise.

NOTE: AT 7:00PM (gmt) I HAVE TO GO TO ELY TO GET MY 360 UN-RRODed. I DON'T KNOW EXACTLY HOW LONG THIS WILL TAKE. THERE WILL ALSO BE A 20 MINUTE GAP WHERE I HAVE MY DINNER AS USUAL

You are currently piloting a Prototype Go... wait, what's this?

DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN

    PROTOTYPE GOUF IS EVOLVING!

    DUNDADADAAAH

PROTOTYPE GOUF HAS EVOLVED IN MS-07A Gouf (Early Type)!

Well sort of. After a Iowa, there were a few more test runs and experiments, and then took the model away. About a week later they offered you one of the first new models of this dedicated design.

The Gouf A still lacks the finger vulcans and Heat Rod, however it does come with the new Heat Saber for INTENSE GUNTANK SHANKING ACTION.
It comes equipped with a 240mm Bazooka as standard, but can use any weapon an ordinary Zaku IIJ can.

Because it lasted exactly one year (near abouts.)

    Your wingmen are:

    ZOLOMON RINGO

Your trusty wingman since the start of the war, he's known for his absurd ability with twin heat hawks.
If he thinks himself a ladies man, then he is grossly mistaken, as you and your barroom brawl experiances can attest to.

He currently pilots an MS-06F Zaku II
He has the following kills: 64 Tank, 5 Gunships, 39 Planes, 2 Police Bikes, 1 Frigate, the Laws of Physics

On the 27th of April your squad is called into the Briefing room. You expect it to be another patrol rotation. But the presence of the Battalion Commander implies that this might not be the case.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, one of our supply trains is missing." He begins.

"In order to ressuply our outlying bases in northern Arizona, we send supplies and replacement parts by rail. Yesterday, one of our supply trains failed to arrive at the 128th Supply Depot."

A map appears highlighting the trains route.

"It might be nothing, on the other hand it could be trouble. So were sending you in to investigate. If there is trouble we have faith in your ability to win the day. You'll be dropped into the area via Fat Uncle transport. Any questions?"

That was why we opted to take the train, it was faster and heavier armed. Also, we were pretty sure that the feds were using parts of the line themselves, and were unwilling to disrupt the lines with saboutage."

    1x MS-07A Gouf (Early Type)

You haven't heard anything about Strauss lately, it's probably a no news is good news situation. As for other aces, Char is still better known, and the Midnight Fenrir are still the local team to beat, they're kills are slightly lower than your, but they have more Land Battleship kills. Let's expect to face our newtype rival. One Armed Bandit is gonna be a motherfucker to beat out in the open desert. He did take that train out into Arizona. We are going into Arizona where Zakus have possibly(probably) been stolen.

Not to mention whatever other mobile suits the Feds might have built themselves.

Now, I'm hoping we didn't spend all of our downtime doing fuckall. Since there was such a large gap in time, could you retroactively give us the possibility for more training within that time frame?

Seeing as our training was rushed, and we were so eager to use our one week in the other thread, I figure we'd want to spend as much time as we could training. Especially in theoretical MS v. MS strategy, seeing as the Feds have started using them.

You start to chew the fat over MS to MS combat tactics with your squad. Flanking to get shots at a Mobile Suits vulnerable rear armour factor heavily, meaning that the force with the higher numbers of better mobility will win the day 90% of the time.
You start discussing the tech advantage and other wrinkles a smaller force could throw up. The defensive use of smoke, dust spray and cover are all brought up.

Your Gouf with it's enhanced agility will have an easier time in close quarters combat, you resolve to ask about close range weaponry when you get to the supply depot.

WELL THEN LETS KEEP THIS THREAD ALIVE WITH DISCUSSIONS OF HOW BADASS WE SHOULD BECOME? Also, strategize.

I'm pretty sure that OPs gonna throw that Newtype our way pretty soon. Likely he'll be in command of a squad similar to ours. Three on three, with us leading our squad, and him leading his, is pretty cinematic.

If that becomes the situation, then how should we handle it?

Maybe a 2 man attack, 1 defense layout? We and Zolomon focus on attacking one of them, while Brande uses her long range guns to keep the rest at bay?

Well we should try to use our superior experience in MS combat to our advantage. Not MS combat: MS vs MS, but in piloting and fighting in a MS. If we end up facing enemy MS, they will likely have had just as bad if not worse initial training as us, and we've seen plenty of action since then. We know the weak points of a Zaku, and any re-purposed ones they throw at us will almost certainly have the same vulnerabilities.

Also, what it a Heat Sabre? Is it just a Heat Hawk in a different shape?

Aren't we 3rd or 4th in the chain of command for the company? 2/3 people knocked out in a larger battle and we could find ourselves zaku-deep in some serious shit.

Perhaps we could take some time to look over the files for the other squads' members? Note any strengths/weaknesses in tactical ability or preference for close/ranged combat.

Googled it. It's a heat hawk, but a sword instead of an axe.

Also, I was rethinking the strategy I posted. Now, Zolo and Brande are both desert camoed, while we've got our trademark skeleton paintjob. Also, we're in a lighter, more agile suit. We have a bazooka. They both have high level firepower.

If we face enemy MS, one or more even, maybe we should use our experience + highly mobile suit + bazooka to distract the enemy suits, while Zolomon and Brande keep hidden and ambush them.

I might be talking out of my ass, but maybe the connections are simply for connecting the rifle's sights to the MS' computers. Seeing as the weapons have actual triggers, it seems likely that they'd fire no matter what was using them.

If they were to be side specific, electronically locked as it were, it would make sense for them to have no actual physical trigger, and instead be fired electronically.

It is during the twilight of of the morning, early 8am that you encounter another squad of Zaku's on patrol.

    They seem cordial

"Wow. I didn't expect to see an ace out here? What are you guys doing here?"

"Just chasing down some bigwigs lost and found" You reply

"You want any help? Were near the end of our patrol anyway..."

After all, odds are the train's just thrown a wheel or something mundane like that. No need to go overkill for what it probably a one squad mission.

The three Zaku's head away. You carefully watch them leave. You have the squad move in a loose formation, keeping an eye behind you for the next few hours as you travel along the train tracks.
Your paranoia thankfully proves needless, and nothing further happens.

As you follow the tracks, you notice several split-off lines leading elsewhere. If the train was hijacked (which is unlikely, given as how there were two infantry platoons stationed aboard.) then they could have been redirected down one of these routes.

check out the end of the 'unfinished' line. If it's truely unfinished and no sign of our train is there, then we need to head to the tin mine.

We need to flank around to the backside of the mine and not approach it from the obvious route of following the tracks to it. The easy way is always mined(or an ambush). We'll take the long way around, circle far out and come back in.

If the 'unfinished' line is not so unfinished, then we'll check it out carefully..

Well it's not like they have any mobile suits. It's probably just tanks and infantry. And if we can take them by surprise with a sneak attack by Zolomon and artillery fire from Jolyne, and then us jumping in from above... I'd say out chances of victory are at least 57%. Possibly as high as 85%. But that's assuming they don't have anything new that we don't know about.

Well direct approach would be an attack while we *might* have the advantage of surprise.

I'd say get Zol to move up to a flank as close as he can without being discovered. Jolyne takes cover back here and starts hammering what she can, make them think it's an artillery barrage. We could probably help, but let's conserve our ammo for the 240 for now.

Anyway, when they decide to respond to Jolyne, Zol opens up with everything his suit has, trying to get them to think the real attack is from the flank. That's our gouf breaks cover and styles them right up the gut, let's see what it can really do.

Once we blow our cover, all bets are off and we play it by ear, with zol closing and Jolyne hopefully moving up to support us as we get in close.

    Kill everything that looks feddie.

They stole a trainload of our suits. Now, maybe they haven't been able to get into them, but they were able to use stolen zakus in the past.

And, it has been a while since they developed their own MS. Remember the one we faced at Roswell? That was Fed built.

It is entirely possible we could face enemy suits.

But again, before we decide to attack or retreat, we need information!

We "could" take out a base ourselves, but see if we can give command a sitrep.

Radio is currently limited in range due to background minovsky particles. It only reaches about a kilometer out.
The only other option would be to find a phoneline somewhere out in the desert.

The base is small, slightly larger than that second airfield you took out in Iowa. You can't see any heavy gun emplacements.

You are currently 5 hours away from the 128th Supply Depot.

    Small.

I say we take it out in a surprise attack. Jol stays back, behind cover of a hill or mound of stone or something. We, being us and Zol, move on from the side. At a designated time, Jol opens fire with her long range cannon. As many shots as she can muster in quick order. Once enemy forces mobilize, she stops firing, we, us and Zol, toss crackers, going for maximum field of damage. Then we switch to our arms + heat hawk/saber until Jol arrives.

You order Zolomon to sneak about and try to scout the area.

He slinks forward, his camo arrangement breaking his pattern up against desert background. He walks in a slow and careful pace, slightly uneven to fool ground sonars.

You get the feeling that he's been preparing himself for some sort of sneaking mission.

After twenty nervy minutes he returns to you.

"Well, we got good news and bad news. The good news? The base looks like it was deserted about a month ago, and our train is parked up at the bases internal station."

"The bad news? No Mobile Suits on the train, no sign of the troops or drivers, and I caught footprints leading south away from the base from around the right number of Zaku's to mark them up as our missing mobile suits. So much for Zeonic Intelligence huh?"

You move forward, always prepared for sneak attacks as you close in. You reach the base with no problems and begin to look around. The train is exactly where Zolomon said it would be, no sign of booby traps thus far.

    >Anyway, check the hangars first. Be careful of any signs of booby traps.

You carefully check the hangars first. From the general looks of things, whilst the facility appears to be deserted (when you peer through windows you see completely empty offices that look with a few papers on the floor that look as though they've been cleaned out in a hurry.) but you also see signs that somebody has been using the facility recently.
Some jeeps, signs of a campfire that sort of thing.

You open up a hangar with your heat saber to reveal this (sans the tracks.) There are several spare parts and the chassis of a second model in the hangar as well.

It looks like another federation attempt at making a mobile suit from scratch. Your not sure how useful a design without legs will be though.

No, but there are papers left lying about in the buildings.
You and Zolomon dismount and have an investigate. You each equip yourself with short range radios. They're bulky to protect them againt minovsky particles but they should allow you to talk to each other whilst your inside the base.
Don't expect to have a conversation much further than that though.

Anyway, you search around the top floors for anything interesting.
    You find:
    2x UNKNOWN FEDERATION PAPERS

Zolomon calls you on the Radio

"Hey bossman, I think I found the train crew, come downstairs would you?

You travel downstairs, and follow Zolomon's directions until you find yourself in front of a meat locker.

Also, shooting locks or other hard objects at close range is VERY dangerous. There are specialized shotgun breaching rounds designed to destroy locks, door hinges, knobs, etc. while presenting little danger to the operator. It should also be noted that these are not very effective past point-blank range, making them less than ideal for combat.
