END OF THE GOD DAMN WORLD QUEST part 2

A few weeks ago, the governments of the world announced the discovery of a space anomaly that threatened the earth, and everything went to hell immediately afterwards.

Its June 3, 2011, and you are Richard Donaldson, former L.A. P.D. You escaped the riots in L.A while you could by air, with the assistance of Brian Cook, professional pilot, in his single engine Cessna after you saved him from 3 thugs. You are trying to get to Cap Cod, back to your family as you havent been able to contact them since this all started.

You made your way to Utah in a series of jumps from airport to airport, landing only when it seemed safe to refuel. You never encountered anyone when you landed, as the airports were either as abandoned as LAX, or the people there hid from you, for whatever reason. You have landed in a small town's airfield, not that far from Salt Lake city.

You have: One 9mm handgun, and 4 full clips of 17 rounds, the fifth clip is short 4 shots. One Remington870 Shotgun (currently equipped as main weapon) with 7 shells. Just short of 2 weeks provisions (food, water), and your badge.

Brian has the other handgun, with a full clip as he hasnt fired a shot, he can fly the plane.

His wife lives nearby, but its in the opposite direction you want to go.

    WHAT IS YOUR MOVE, /TG/?

Well, so I assume they are at some regional airport in Utah?

I guess we'd need a vehicle. Since the pilot was nice enough to fly us here, I suppose he can keep the pistol, while we get our own seperate vehicles if we decide to go our seperate ways.

Brian loves his wife, she was his main motivation in getting the hell out of L.A. Their house wouldnt have anything other than the regular groceries however.

Brian REALLY wants to get back to Jessica.

You are currently at "Bolinder Field - Tooele Valley Airport"

Fine, wife rescue it is then. We need to somehow secure the plane so that no one can steal it, then move quickly to his wife's location and hopefully raid someplace for supplies on the way.

Are there any ground vehicles nearby which we might be able to make use of?

    >>6838428
The plane is secured, and hidden in a hanger. (The slur is starting to bleed back through the paint however, but thats besides the point)

With that done, you and Brian make your way to the parking lot. The midday sun beats down on the asphalt, and there are what appear to be a few workable cars in the parking lot, the rest have either been vandalized, burned, or generally wrecked.

There is also a man here, siphoning gas from one of the tanks.

The man doesnt appear to be obviously armed, although he could be hiding a weapon. There is a car near the exit of the parking lot not far from where he's standing that has what looks like sheet metal welded over the windows.

Well, using the logic that if he's siphoning gas then his car is the only one that we're sure is operational, let's call that our target vehicle. If possible, Brian and ourself should move into position such that we can approach the man from the vector his car is on- so he'll have to move towards us to reach his vehicle. If we reach his car before he notices us, have Brian stay back to provide supporting fire/threat if necessary and approach while calling out a friendly greeting.

Point gun at man. Get his attention. Assuming he doesn't reach for a weapon, explain your situation calmly, and apologize for pointing the gun at him. 'Can't be too careful nowadays,' or something to that effect.

Greet the man, but keep the shotgun slung across the back.

Make the way toward one of the working vehicles. Depending on which way Brian's house is, copguy can take I-70 or I-80 east out of the state, only real routes out of Utah. I-80 out of SLC might be the safer bet, since its all rural nothing from there to Cheyanne and onwards.

We have no guarantee that any of the vehicles except the man's have any fuel or have not had critical parts scavenged.

Also, in my personal view we should attempt to retrieve Brian's wife and bring her back to the airport with us, then proceed to our desired destination by plane; air travel is likely to run into far less difficulties than ground movement. This is a side trip being made to maintain morale of critical personnel for that venture (our only pilot).

Stealing cars at gunpoint is the kind of thing you became a cop to prevent. That aside, Brian doesnt seem to be the kind of guy who'd do that either, remember, he was held at gunpoint himself.
    >>6838604
    >>6838608
Keeping your shotgun visible, but out of your hands, you calmly call out to the man.
    "Hey, buddy, got a second?"
The man reacts like he was shot at. He ducks behind the car he was siphoning from and yells out "WHO ARE YOU?"

    >Stealing cars at gunpoint is the kind of thing you became a cop to prevent.
Nowhere did I suggest stealing the car at gunpoint; I counseled that approach because if he were to prove hostile, his car would provide convenient cover as it's reinforced and he'd be unlikely to fire on it. Also, if we were between him and his vehicle he would forced to interact with us rather than flee, and we need information and possibly help.

The world has gone to shit; just because we're still morally intact doesn't mean that anyone else is, and we should act accordingly. Assuming potential hostilities or suspicion on the part of others and taking steps to account for it is essential.

    "Hey now, we're friendly"
The man pokes his head out of his cover behind the car, now that you can get a better look at him, he's in a pretty bad state. He might not be injured but he looks haggard, and there are what appears to be minor burns on his left cheek.
"We need a car, we just wanna know if you've taken gas from ALL of them, or if theres one left that should still run."

(You are right. I am retarded)
After explaining the situation to him, he comes out from behind the car.
    "So, you JUST got here?"
    "Yes"
"So, you're not with the crazies?"
    "What?"
Apparently, the man explains, the general chaos around here has a distinct religious flavor. The mega-churches started pumping out "REPENT OR BE DAMNED" sermons, and the groups that tried to restore order shouted down, then beaten down.

He had been hiding out in a church that was giving out food from their stores when a mob formed down the street and started throwing Molotovs. Then they started shooting at him as he tried to drive away. He says that if he hadnt put that sheet metal on the car, he might have been hit.

There is a bullet mark on the metal, that backs up his story.

Driving through the middle of SLC to take I-80 east sounds like a bad idea in light of things.

Thank the guy for the information. Start looking for a function car and a length of wire to hot-wire one with. I think the ol' wire to the battery and ignition coil trick should work if we can pop the hood of one of these vehicles.

After a regular check of the cars that could still have stuff in them, you dont find much (Jacob was thorough), but you DO manage to find some fuzzy dice in the convertible. ("You gotta have fuzzy dice for a road trip, you just gotta", says Brian), and a Tazer with a full battery in the van.
With that done, you say your goodbyes to Jacob as you go your separate ways. You have Brian drive, as he knows the roads around here and you can shoot if you need too.

Tazer. Nice. We can keep that as a tertiary weapon; Brian doesn't really seem the type for it and he's already got a pistol.

While driving, remain alert for any activity. Listen for gunshots, of course... but any location with multiple visibly modified vehicles near it is likely to house active people.

Inquire as to if Brian knows the location of any potentially useful supplies (grocery stores, hardware stores, anyplace which might have guns), for inspection after we retrieve his wife.

    Utah is flat.
Utah gas stations appearently have no gas (they all either have huge "NO GAS" signs, or have been looted to the point where its unlikely anything is left.

Suddenly Brian chirps up and points to a gap in the trees. You can see a mid-sized country house with a gravel driveway.
"Still in one piece! I'm almost home sweetheart!"

Remind Brian to be cautious- we have no idea if his wife is still there or if anyone else might be present. Worst case, his wife might be somewhere else and someone hostile is inside.

Pull in and move towards the house cautiously. Brian can take point, since he's probably eager to get inside, but if he's too fast tell him to stick together.

As we pull up, ready our weapons. Attempt to discern if anyone's in the house; are there any lights on, smoke from a chimney, sounds of talking, etc. Tell Brian to restrain himself and not simply run into the house, because we don't know if it's safe yet. I would suggest that we take the lead, tazer in hand. Don't want to accidentally kill his wife or something.

I was thinking that if his wife is there and Brian's in the lead, she'd be much less likely to panic than if some strange armed man is walking into the house.

You tell Brian that it might be dangerous. Brian agrees, and stops the car at the edge of the driveway behind the trees. Brian knows the property so you have him go first.
The two of you sneak around to the side to use another door.
You're at the house, /tg/, how do you proceed?

Start with >Attempt to discern if anyone's in the house; are there any lights on, smoke from a chimney, sounds of talking, etc.
Listen for a tic, see if there's any movement inside. Ask Brian if there are any entrances from which the inside of the house can be conveniently seen- large windows, glass door, or such. Those would be preferred since it'd be harder for someone to lie in wait.

Are the lights on? Any sign of violence or uninhabitance?

Have Brian take point and make himself known.

I'm guessing the door is locked or does Brian have the keys to his house?

You use a side door and have Brian go first. You have the Tazer out to prevent any accidents. The lights are off, but the power is still on, from what you can tell from the digital clock on the wall.
You pass through a doorway into a kitchen, sticking close to Brian.

The door suddenly slams behind you, and mid turn to see whats behind you theres what feels like an explosion on the side of your head, and theres a loud "WONG" metal sound.

You dont remember hitting the ground.

"I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU LAST TIME NOT TO COME 'ROUND HERE!"

Heh. I would assume that our character's current course of action is to pass into unconsciousness while Brian and his wife work out their marital problems.
But seriously, stay on the ground for now. Let Brian distract his wife (who, i assume, hit us with the pan). If their conversation seems to be going sour, she'll be too distracted to notice us getting up and disarming her/ tazering her.

You stammer out a "Stop!" and manage a look up at your attacker.

Given that Brian is hugging her, this is probably Jessica. She hit you over the head with a frying pan, and since she's a full head taller than him, and looks like he could throw him bodily out a window if she wanted too, its no mystery why your head hurts as much as it does.

She has a black eye, and a bruise on her cheek.

    Ow.

As it is now night time, and we are injured, I suggest spending the night in Brian's house, then launching any supply raids and/or returning to the runway for departure in the morning.

You climb to your feet, and give Jessica a dirty look for her trouble. She gives you one right back.
    >>6839858
She softens a little once she finds out who you are. (More from Brian, and that you helped him, rather than you telling her that your a cop)
"Looters, they thought the place was abandoned and that they could do as they like" she points at the injuries, "You think this is bad? You should see the other three guys"

GONNA HAVE TO CUT YOU OFF AGAIN HERE, /TG/.

Again, be brutally honest. There hasn't been any dangerous action because you guys make smart choices. As I said last time, this is my first quest, so I hope I'm being as entertaining as I can.

A pity that we're stopping here.

The quest wasn't bad. On a few occasions you misinterpreted what was being said slightly, but were quick to correct yourself when it was pointed out instead of being a jackass about it. As far as I noticed, you didn't blatantly ignore people, which is always annoying in a GM.

You could use slightly more detailed descriptions; for example, when you said that we noticed a man, it could be assumed that we'd immediately check for weapons. When we drive up to the house, we'd immediately check for lights on/off. Needing to wait for an additional GM/player post cycle when more information is being asked for slows things down quite a bit... though we were generally bold enough that that didn't happen.

You'd probably make a pretty good DM/GM, dude. The whole fluid and adaptable cause and effect thing is great. So players thinking intelligently and avoiding bad shit has its own rewards.

Doesn't mean you can't throw a wrench in the system every once in a while to force the players to adapt to a situation they didn't want to adapt to.
