    Hey /tg/!

Paizo employee here. I want to answer your questions. So, please, ask away!
    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)23:29 No.6796227
Why did you give Wizards class features?

Why didn't you change or remove time stop/teleport/save-or-sucks/etc despite bragging about how you "fixed magic"?

Why are you replacing psionics with a vancian system?

    >> Anonymous 11/20/09(Fri)23:34 No.6796292
    1) There as an overall increase in power level. Wizards, while already powerful, did need a bump up.

    2) Community feedback and compatibility. And I haven't bragged about anything.

    3) The vancian system was already in place. We simply didn't remove it. And we haven't replaced psionics. We have, in fact, done absolutely nothing to, for, or against psionics. Use them as much as you want.

    Also, note, I'm not a dev. =)

Is there a general sense of shame at marketing to the pissed-off neckbeard demographic rather than making something that can stand on its own merits, or are you basically all whores?

Shame? No. We do tend to make fun of our demographic, though.

Also, we are proud of our product. Note, the RPG rules are not the only thing we make. We actually make it so that we can make the things that do stand on their own.

Why don't sharks have that thing where after a successful bite attack they can just grab you in their jaws and shake you. I mean, dogs have it, if I recall, but sharks do not. whats up with that?
(excuse my lack of clarity. Books not available atm.)
    >> Anonymous 11/21/09(Sat)00:00 No.6796656

Actually, the publisher and I have talked about it. We both agree that it wouldn't be a bad idea at all. At the worst, it gives us more shelf space in mainstream bookstores. Note, B&N and such mostly stock...core rulebooks. So the more of them we have, the more space we get in the bookstore.

Also, we think we could do a decent job with a modern or future.

How do you feel about the Savage Tide path? I like it, but I have a fairly big beef with fighting Demogorgon at the end. I don't think this is something you should do anywhere close to 20 and I feel it creates a letdown into epic levels. It's hard to follow up taking on the biggest demon lord.

Why don't any of the Pathfinder Society adventures seem to be play tested? I currently run Society events for my home group and hope to branch out and work to connect a public society group to my local gaming store.

My problem is that most every Society adventure seems to have overkill and underwhelming encounters in them. From a 3rd lvl Cleric with undead minion fighting 1st lvl characters to then fighting Mites (what are they? The sub-kobald?). Does anybody really play through this stuff once or twice.

Also, why does a T-Rex have a reflex save like Neo from the Matrix? It can dodge lighting!

Yes, I think it's a permanent niche. This size of it, I'm not yet sure of. Heck, 1st and 2nd still have a niche (Hackmaster, Castles and Crusades [or whatever their names are, I'm too lazy to double check that]).

They aren't playtested. Playtesting is the responsibility of the author, and they're not going to do it, generally. The devs don't have the time to playtest them. They have about 500 pages a month to get through. And, frankly, the dev assigned to the Scenarios sucks ass. They're going to be handed off to someone else very, very soon. Shadowrun, Grimm Fantasy, Vampire 2nd Ed.

Extremely. "How do you make 1 million dollars in the game industry? Start with 2 million." Paizo is a rare success story.

Personally, I think that it lies in simulation. The rules are there to describe how you interact with the universe. The rules are also there to support the story, and the story can, will, and should subvert the rules. Now, making the rules fun and support the story, that is the art of the game.

I find that the essence of a tabletop RPG is allowing you to do what you want. "I want to blow up buildings with fire from my mind!" I can do that. "I want to wield a sword bigger than me!" I can do that. "I want to do fifteen flips down a ten story cliff!" I can do that.

Personally, I've only played 2nd, not 1st. The thing I remember most is the retarded reason wizards couldn't wear armor (metal interfering with magic) and magic aging you. So, no. =)

Retarded, on both counts. I know what Wizards' revenue stream was on those pdfs...and they're retarded for cutting that off.

Yes! For example, scantily clad there is Seoni. There's also Valeros (the fighter), Lem (the bard), etc, etc.

Yeah. Have you noticed that 4th edition makes it's bones by being 'not D and D'? They butchered FR and the system underpinnings far more than they had to to make a new edition. It feels like a lot of the long running traditions and style of Dungeons and Dragons was intentionally lost.

um... I disagree. Used solely as a reason to bar armor is stupid, of course, but metal, iron in particular, has always been something magic doesn't like. That's constant across tons of folklore. Not saying going with it is ideal, but it's certainly not retarded.

BoEF is why Wizards instituted "quality controls" on 3rd party products. Personally, I dislike that we did the same to stave off that type of thing. I think it's needed.

Because we told him to. That's the archetype for our elves, right there, what we send all the artists as a reference. We send Wayne a concept, and we take what he gives us and say, "Thank you, may I have another!"

Generally just writing. The type of thing we might send Wayne is, "The next iconic is a female barbarian. She should have a really big sword. Her armor should look real but not too much of it. Give her a fearsome aspect." The rest is in his hands. We give other artists a bit more direction than that, but we have a *lot* of trust in Wayne.

Lets be honest, the success (over time) of the podcasts will be determined less by the fame of the participants and more by the actual quality of the participants. The best group you can get together, the most entertaining group to listen to, the most creative DM and the most involved players, thats who we want to listen to. You get those guys together and you'll have some something good. Obviously fame is important to attract people, because a lot of people don't care about joe average's game. But fame doesn't necessarily equal role playing ability (in my experience). You get the best guys you can find for the podcast. Guys who aren't shy and who are able to really open up despite being on tape. Then all you have to say is that its one of "paizo's inhouse gaming groups" or something. The quality will carry it and people will be genuinely interested in a thing like that. Sure I don't care how bob down the street plays his game, but fuck, bob isn't a professional fucking gamer. You guys earn your daily bread off of this stuff even if you aren't James or Jason or whoever.

I mean, come on, we're content whores over here. We'll suck up just about anything and goddamn the three hour drive to work each morning could really stand to be filled up with some high adventure.

Actually if you go back to the beginning of all that, magic items used to require things like meteoric iron, not terrestrial iron. But regardless, the folklore is still there and the other poster has a good point.

Restricting mages to not using metallic armor was both good for game balance which has been a perfectly good reason for all sorts of other game tweaks.
