    I'm considering getting this.

What can you tell me about it?
    Any warnings? any Praises?

    Interesting idea/setting. Shitty mechanics.

Way too much kitchen sink for me. They should've focused on one or two ideas.
    >Any warnings?
    Pretty clunky system.
    >any Praises?
    Cthulhu vs Evangelion.

You'll probably hear this from everyone. I'm incorporating some of the ideas (arcanotech, engels, tag'ers) into my medieval fantasy setting, but I would never run an actual cthulhutech game.

I reckon it's finally passable as something that is playable by now, since they actually released a book that contains preconstructed adventures (after what, 3 years?).

Still the crunch is shit, and the fluff is a combination of the bad parts of CoC and the bad parts of Evangelion. At the very least, they missed out on the parts that made either of those good in it's own right.

Also, tries to be investigator, mecha and high-powered agent game all at once, and does none of them good or detailed.

The setting is awesome, the character creation mechanics are awesome... the battle system sucks dicks but can be mostly ignored and patched up. The main problem of the game is a overly involving dice gimmick. Either way I had a lot of fun GMing this.
    >> Anonymous 11/06/09(Fri)15:37 No.6594259
Idea is only good if you jack off to one, and lord help you, or two of the worst fandoms in 'popular' culture. Those being emo piloted giant robots and love craft. After you get past that steaming pile of bad writting and DEEP ideas you have a system that has one of the worst dice pool systems ever in that no GM can keep up with it's "you suck or you are goddly" rolls that can pop up and end encounters. Then the stats and implementations of this dicepool look half finished and no semblance of balance in any area, you either do great with the same few ideas or suck horribly, and if you wanted giant robots enjoy homebrewing around that clusterfuck of codes which is if you came here for that you might as well look elsewhere. Everything is the worst kind of nerd hobby, idiot players attracted by the DEEP fluff and LAWL INSANITY DAMAGE type, worst system made by people not knowing what the fuck they are doing, and uncontrollable system in game without the GM going "reroll" every time an oddity comes up. Shit sucks.

The rules and mechanics of the game need -a lot- of work. Even simple movement can get a little confusing with the rules they give you, and psionics are pretty wrecked as is. Mecha rules are as clunky as the regular rules, and you'll find yourself really struggling to get off the ground in character creation to begin with. Much of the rules are very similar to a mixer blend of WoD "if you munchkin you'll make an unbeatable character, the point is to make an organic character not win the game" and Rifts "one player is a mecha pilot destroying cities, the other player is a pennyless bum named joe with 4 rounds left in his ancient tech revolver". You really need to decide what sort of game you want to play (street level, tager, or mecha) and not allow the options for anything else into your game.

Once you get a lot of things sorted out and houseruled (at least in my experience) the baseline crunch system isn't too bad, and is fairly clever. I liked the crunch once I applied 30 hours and almost 20 pages of houserules to it.

Fluffwise, if you like mecha, and you like cosmic horror, it's a goldmine. If you don't, then why are you even picking up the book? I think the setting is one of the more original works recently, and has a fairly viable explanation of why things are, and why they work the way they do. The mood and atmosphere you can capture (paranoia, cosmic horror, hopelessness, grittiness) are amazing.

tl;dr: Once you houserule most of the crunch, the setting is absolutely wonderful (if you can decide on what sort of game you want to play).
    >> OP 11/06/09(Fri)16:09 No.6594607
I like mecha and I like cosmic horror.

I always say fluff is more important than crunch.

Dark Passions is a book giving fluff for various minor cults that weren't large or influential enough to be mentioned in the main book, but could be handy for any kind of non-frontline combat type of game.
    >> Anonymous 11/06/09(Fri)16:30 No.6594886
I actaually enjoy the system. Character creation is no problem, fluff is on the most part great.

You have to houserule a rule or two in combat, but what system doesn't need that ? The only thing I have yet to figure out is how to make grenades not too powerful, but stronger than a pistol round.

One world government after a sci-fi/horror catastrophe that killed 3/4ths of the Earth's population is using advanced technology including mecha to fight a superior foe. Their only hope is a biomechanical war machine provided by a shadowy secret society that can only be piloted by a select few who are able to interface directly into its central nervous system. At stake is the fate of humanity, either a swift and merciless end at the hand of eldritch horrors or a poorly understood future that some might find equally horrific.
    >> The Bearded Bear 11/06/09(Fri)17:04 No.6595274
Not to mention somewhere in the first 10 pages of the book the authors themselves state to have been strongly inspired by it.

    >One world government
UN =/= NEG - the countries in evangelion are pretty much intact. What you might think is SEELE, which is more of a Illuminati type of society.

    >after a sci-fi/horror catastrophe that killed 3/4ths of the Earth's population is using advanced technology including mecha to fight a superior foe
Well I NEVER heard that one before evangelion.

    >Their only hope is a biomechanical war machine
This is the evangelion related part

    >provided by a shadowy secret society
You mean the government and a giant well know corporation ? Truly, those two are the most dark and shoddy things in the world !

    >that can only be piloted by a select few
No, there is a abundance of potential pilots. It's the Engels which are few and why they pick only the best.

    >At stake is the fate of humanity, either a swift and merciless end at the hand of eldritch horrors or a poorly understood future that some might find equally horrific.
Yeah, that's a evanglion exclusive plot right there.
    >> Anonymous 11/06/09(Fri)17:09 No.6595343
Yeah, it goes excatly like this:

"Neon Genesis Evangelion was an inspiration for the Engels of Cthulhutech(...)"

    And nothing more.

    >> The Bearded Bear 11/06/09(Fri)17:14 No.6595379
Indeed, however the Engels take a large portion of the settings focus and if you look closer you'll see that the parallels are quite deeply rooted into the fluff. Which is great as I find it to mash perfectly. Especially the Aeon War Syndrome.
    >> Anonymous 11/06/09(Fri)17:16 No.6595406
Yes but still, it's not enough to call it evangelion/cthulhu.

    I'd rather call it mechwarrior/cthulhu.
    >> Anonymous 11/06/09(Fri)17:16 No.6595408
Great, great fluff. But poker dice gimmick takes a lot of getting used to. Game works a fuckload better if you use the cards rules in Vade Mecum, shit just goes faster that way. The downside is that while making it easier to play, the card rules also make it easier for the players to survive.
    >> No Man 11/06/09(Fri)17:16 No.6595412

I thought Aeon War Syndrome was the effect of EVERYBODY knowing the unthinkable. One of the biggest victories in Lovecraft's stories was the ability for humanity to roll over and go back to sleep, thinking it was just a bad dream. AWS is what happens when humans wake up and find out the 'nightmare' was reality.
    >> Anonymous 11/06/09(Fri)17:20 No.6595444
Also about people getting used to the thought that they already lost and constantly getting reconstructed with cloned parts.
    >> Anonymous 11/06/09(Fri)17:20 No.6595446
AWS is like PTSD on meth while you watch a split-screen of Event Horizon and children getting raped and then eaten by Gugs.
    >> The Bearded Bear 11/06/09(Fri)17:22 No.6595472
Indeed. But that's because AWS isn't a single disorderm. What I meant is the mental breakdown of the Engel pilots as they are basically thrown into communion with "monsters" to fight "monsters" which in turn splendidly parallels one of my favourite themes in Evangelion.
    >> Anonymous 11/06/09(Fri)17:24 No.6595492
Ah, no, it seems you misunderstood. AWS is what touches all the soldiers of the Aeon War. Engel pilots burning out is hinted at and presented in the story hooks related to them.
    >> The Bearded Bear 11/06/09(Fri)17:28 No.6595539
Ummm... and that matters where? Engel pilots are equally soldiers in the Aeon War as any other footman or tank commander, they just have a closer insight into the inhuman.
AWS is defined in the book as:
"The maddening effect of the Old Ones, their minions,
and the occult in general is well known. This doesn’t
mean that people don’t naturally have mental problems
in CthulhuTech. To help differentiate between those who
naturally have difficulties and those who’ve been driven
mad by the Strange Aeon, psychologists use the term
Aeon War Syndrome or AWS. Aeon War Syndrome encompasses
any host of disorders that manifest as people
are confronted with the eldritch horrors of the world and
most forms of treatment development are geared towards
    helping its victims."
Which basically catches every playable character "class", simply for each of them the exact reason is different.
    >> Anonymous 11/06/09(Fri)17:30 No.6595550
I said it isn't exclusive to them.

Things actually didn't too badly, we actually had a lot of fun, might have been the group though. I talked with the GM from that group last week, seems he's recently run a game with a different composition and he said the game pretty much falls apart when you have varying power levels.

The good side of pker dice, i think, is that it would let you play at CoC level (yes, you just failed san) or at Exalted level (cut thta roach's head off) by limiting maximum skill ratings.

Well of course a Tager will be stronger than a human - duh. Not everyone can be equally strong just because they invested the same amount of points - just like even a cheap revolver beast master kung-fu. What you should do is create character that give you fun and don't necessarily need to be fighters - it's Cthulhu.

"Stop saying CT has elements of Eva in it"-guy complains that 'Evangellion is all about the angst, and CthulhuTech isn't like that at all'.

"CthulhuTech has elements of Eva in it"-guy is someone who glosses over the angst and pretentiousness because:
they're either irrelevant to the comparison he's trying to make (using an imperfect comparison to save time, whowouldhavethunkit?)
they're the sort of person who were too busy watching 'giant living mecha used to fight eldritch horrors' for the pretentious angsty faggotry inherent in Eva to even register.
