SO I wanna get into Exalted, what are the necessary books?
    >> MechaMilk !T.We2gZSuI 11/03/09(Tue)23:01 No.6558127
The core book, maybe the Storyteller's companion for villains and such. That said, if you want to play anything other than Solars, you'll need their book as well.

And get yourself to some classic epics.

Oadenol's Codex, Wonders of the Lost Age, some of the Compass books that might be pertinent to the locations where you may be playing, Scroll of the Monk if you're playing a martial artist and are looking for different styles, and the Black and White Treatises if you're looking at playing a magician-type character.

The core book has all the rules you'll need to play solars and mortals.

The Story Teller's Compainion adds quick and dirty rules for Siderials Lunars Abyssals, god-bloods, demons, fair folk and gods.

Individual books give you detailed rules for the individual types: Manual of Exalted Power: _____ for the exalts, Graceful Wicked Masques for fair folk, Scroll of Heroes for half-god and other half breeds and Role of Glorious Divinity 1 for gods.

Lunars shapeshift, Abyssals kill shit dead and then put it to work, Sidereals are dicks, Dragon-Blooded work best if you have more than one in the group and Infernals are for when you want to put the stunt system to work destroying shit instead of doing acrobatics.

    >What's the difference from solar and the rest of the exalted?

Solars are the best Exalted, in terms of all round capabilities, and good for new players to know the ropes. They're kinda like the Space Marines of Exalted; shiny, strong, and capable of kicking lost of ass. That said, the other Exalted have their own areas of specialties; I'll list them down in terms of my favourites first:

1: Infernals: Unabashedly moustache-twirling villains, these guys are the way to go if you want to play a badguy in the spirit of Exalted. Dangle heroes over deathtraps while monologing about your devious to marry his beautiful sister and take her inheritance FUCK YEAR! Of course, if playing a villain doesn't appeal, then guess what? You can do the same as a good guy! Just replace 'hero' with 'villain' in the previous example!

2: Dragon-Blooded: Much weaker overall than the Celestial (Solar, Sidereal, Lunar, Abyssal and Infernal) Exalted, the Dragon-Blooded have to work together to achieve their goals, and their Charms reflect this. Makes for a nice, low-powere game of Exalted. Honestly, I'd recommend these guys for new players, since it allws you just enough to survive the dangers of Creation while reminding you that yes, Creation CAN be dangerous. Too bad everyone's too busy going 'OOH I WANNA BE A SHINY' in Exalted, but meh, it's a selling point.

    > weak compared to the other Exalt types

I'm not a min-maxer. If I like the character concept I'll run with it

    > Astrologies are too fucking complicated to deal with.

how so? I've always been good with overly complicated systems (3.5, THAC0)

    >>6558421

3: Lunar Exalted: These guys are furries- and in Exalted, this is an asset. Ever wanted to turn into a monstrosity with ten clawed tentacles and rip the shit out of your foes? Ever wanted to look so beautiful as to make Adonis want to pattern himself on you? Choose Lunar Exalted. Their warriors have the potential to rival the best the Solar Exalted have, and their courtesans similarly rival the prettiest Golden Ladies.

4: Sidereals: JUST AS PLANNED is the name of these guys' game, and if diplomacy doesn't work, they move on to their amazing Martial Arts. Other Martial Arts use fists, razor-claws and staves as form weapons, but with Sidereal Martial Arts, you can punch your enemies' langauges out with the concept of love, or hit their destiny and turn them into a duck. That said, you're a glass cannon, so don't expect to be directly fighting gods as often as the other Celestials.

5: Solars: Like I said, vanilla. Good to cut your teeth on, but on the whole once you've had a bite of the rest, you'll find something to better suit your tastes.

6: Abyssals: Avatars of long-dead gods who haunt, and are haunted by, the world (it's Exalted, bear with me). They aim to bring all of Creation into Oblivion, ending everything forever. I don't really like these guys as they've always seemed too SRS BZNS to me, but that's just one twit's opinion. If showing a world where DBZ meets The Odyssey the true meaning of 'Sit down and get to work, imagination's not gonna put food on the table!' is your thing, don't let me stop you.

The Sidereals charmset wasn't ported from 1e to 2e with the eye to balance that it should have had. This has been unofficially fixed with Loom 2.0. Their deficient Charms are also compensated by the fact that Sidereal Martial Arts let them punch you so hard you become a duck and only get more ridiculous from there.

As for combining that with Infernals, you could play a Sidereal akuma, I guess, but why would you? There's no reason for a Celestial Exalt to make a pact with the Yozis for power when they would quickly become more powerful than it made them on their own, without the drawbacks.

Lunars = Animal themed exalts of the moon. Their main themes are Survival, protection creation and adaptability. Castes: Full Moon (physical power), No Moon (Raw intellect), Changing Moon (pure force of personality). They live on the edge of civilization and forge new mortal societies to withstand the coming darkness.

Siderials = Fate themed exalts of the stars/planets. Their abilities are unique, powerful, convoluted and extremely narrow. Each caste has dominion over an aspect of fate: Journeys, Battles, Endings, Serenity, and Secrets. They live in heaven and enforce the rules of the gods.

Abyssals = "Mirrored" solar exaltations stolen and blackened by the Neverborn and enslaved to their Deathlord masters. Their main themes are death, undead, destruction and redemption.

Infernals: Warped solar exaltations stolen by the Yozi (the lords of hell). Unlike the Abyssals who are basically just undead and destructive versions of the solars, Infernals are fundamentally altered and have powers associated with the traits of their Yozi masters. Hell is their home and they seek to turn all of creation into a hellish landscape so that their masters can escape their prison.

Dragon-Blooded: Chosen of the elemental dragons, they are the weakest of the exalted but they can pass their powers on to their children, making them by far the most numerous. Also they have been running the world for about 1500 years now so they have all the infrastructure to support them. They are currently on the brink of civil war because their empress is missing. Their castes follow the 5 elements: Earth, Fire, Air, Water and Wood.

Sidereals are never going to gain Labyrinth circle necromancy, or Solar circle sorcery, on their own, dude. So that's one reason.

Also, One Hand Fury is pretty tempting, and accepting Malfeas as your lord and personal saviour is pretty fucking sweet when you're going from a frail little siddy to becoming a hulking JUGGERNAUT BITCH with solar sorcery & malfean charms.
    >> Anonymous 11/03/09(Tue)23:29 No.6558480
furries is something of a misnomer for Lunars, they do have a totemic theme but they're really closer to shoggoths than anything. This is exemplified in Lunars that "go bad" and become chimera.

OH YES, as an Infernal. It's just that as an Infernal, you won't be able to manipulate Destiny as directly as the Sids (and they're pretty damned direct when it comes to manipulating Destiny), so you'll have to get down and dirty doing as many of these as possible:

    1) Wrecking the peace between people and peoples with well-chosen words and societal paranoia
    2) Starting cults to the dark beings who empowered you- or yourself, 'cos one of the themes of Infernals is eventually turning to those Dark Beings and saying 'Thanks for the powers, suckers!'
    3) Inventing doomsday devices, because nothing says 'FUCK YOU' like a death ray. You can even program it to tattoo in the words 'FUCK YOU' in everything it kills.
    4) Killing anything that says 'YES, FUCK US PLEASE!'
    5) Alternatively, you can just drive all your foes insane.

Astrology requires some work between the ST and you, as you'll literally be shaping the destiny of people and communities.

Lunars can also make their alternate form some kind of bizarre daemon prince type thing, like a giant of stone with a glowing green third eye, or a mass of tentacles. Besides those 3 castes, there's also casteless lunars, who have whatever anima power is appropriate for the phase of the moon, and can gain chimera powers, giving them them stuff like a non-charm based perfect defense, the ability to consume people and make clones of them later (useful if you need to pose as a group of people instead of just one for instance), and of course, teh ability to return from death if so much as a single drop of blood remains.

Oh and just to qualify that statement about numbers.

There were 300 solars. Half of these exaltations have been tainted... 100 abyssals , 50 infernals and 150 soalrs now exist.

    There are 300 lunars

    There are 100 Siderials

There are roughly 20,000 dragon-blooded currently. At their height they numbered in the millions.

Ghosts: It sounds cool, but you're the bitch of even an enlightened mortal necromancer, and as if being incredibly weak wasn't bad enough, Dragon Kings and Exalts can turn into ghosts that are way more powerful than you. Deathlords can even eat you without a roll.

Dragon Kings: Dinosaur people who can turn into vampires, necromancer ghoasts, cyborgs, or ghouls. And do a bunch of elemental stuff noone cares about. Fairly weak.

Heroic Mortals: Don't even bother, though I guess you can learn basic necromancy and push around ghosts, basic sorcery and push around first circle demons.

Thaumaturge: The good news: You can summon up to a second circle demon. The bad news: You can't control them. just play something worthwhile.

    I'll try.

See, you don't have to play the Exalted. You can also choose to play the Dragon-Kings, Mayaincatec dinosaur-men who were among the first races in Creation. Really big on the Unconquered Sun, chief god of the Solars. Not as powerful as most Exalted (though a definite match for younger Dragon-Bloods), these guys choose from 'paths' instead of Charm Trees. These Paths expand a DK's understanding of the world, but can also transform them into unworldy beings. One Path, for example, turns you into mini-SHODAN (or ED-209, depending on your interpretation).

Ghosts are a special case. See, Creation's dead normally reincarnate, but for some reason, ghosts are too tied to the living world by things called Fetters, and as such refuse to reincarnate. Normally, ghosts are doomed to repeat their lives with minor changes (seeing as they became ghosts on account of refusing to leave said lives behind), but heroic ghosts can forge their own destinies, as opposed to being forged into soulsteel (metal made of still-conscious souls).

Thaumaturges and Heroic Mortals are almost always one and the same. See, mortals in Exalted have the wrong end of the shit stick. They can never achieve the heights of power the Exalted can reach,- hell, TRYING to learn Exalted Charms can cause mortals to explode. That said, they can manage some pretty handy stuff on their own. Thaumaturges can learn very, very basic magic requiring long rituals, while Heroic Mortals are mortals who, though not Exalted, still try to seize their destiny in their hands. Some of them, powered by this destiny, can even have the potential to outdo the Exalted in the short term.

Actually I don't think the binding portion of Demon Of the First Circle works for mortal sorcerers. I seem to remember reading somewhere that mortals aren't included in the "List of things the demons must bend over and get fucked by" that was established when they were first imprisoned.

In fact demons get rather pissy at the presumption of puny mortal sorcerers ordering them around. You'd have better luck with coaxing them out with Thaumaturgy and striking some kind of bargin.

If creation is a machine, gods are the engineers (mortals are probably the gears). The guys in the control room making everything work. When someone chops down a tree, the least god of the axe tells the least god of the tree that it should fall down now, and usually, it does.

Terestrial gods represent physical objects. The god of a heard of cows, living in the east, reports up to the god of eastern cows, who then reports up to the god of all cows.

Celestial gods represent concepts. The god of all cows reports up to the god of cattle farming who reports up to the god of farming who probably works in the bureau of humanity, which governs everything associated with civilization.

Gods are supposed to work behind the sceens. Their powers are limited by their domain, but can be very powerful with regards to that particular domain.

To be fair, GSPs are much less evil in general than what you'd expect from failed heroes who have been gang raped by 14+ non-moe eldritch horrors one after the other after being possessed by a demon. Their urges tend to be very well defined, down to earth stuff that had something to do with their former lives, and its almost never durrhurr in and of itself.
    >> Anonymous 11/04/09(Wed)00:20 No.6559188
The Fair Folk are creatures who existed before anything else did. They are (in their natural state) formless masses of essence. Creation was crystallized out of the formless essence of the Wyld into something stable so that the Primorials could have a fortress against the infinite forces of the fair folk. They are still kinda sore about that, they don't really appreciate the existence things that don't bend to their every whim.

However when creation was made there was created a "buffer" zone where the chaotic energy of the Wyld and the stability of creation overlap. This is where the Rakasha live, fair folk who have taken on temporary identities and forms so that they may interact with creation with it destroying them.

The Rakasha exist as creatures of dream, fable and legend. A rakasha's identity is an elaborate lie built up around the role they wish to play in creation's "story"... no more real then a character in a book but given substance by the energy of the wyld.

One popular theory is that if the Ebon Dragon marries, his name will change and therefore the oaths he swore that keep him caged will no longer apply.

That's why I support the 'True Love' theory. It basically goes that if the Dragon finds someone who even he won't betray, and that undoubtedly evil person finds the Dragon eminently trustworthy- the Dragon won't quite be the Dragon anymore, and thus free to escape while thumbing his nose at the other Primords.

That said, of course, I don't know if 10,000 DBs would be enough to retake Heaven...

I'd say that by fucking around with the Empress' Intimacies, he wouldn't have to lift a finger after setting it in motion. The Empress is famous for her strong will, after all.

I see it as thus: Ed sets Miss Scarlet upon the world. She doesn't listen to him, and is probably quite dismissive of his opinions ("Yes, dear. Of course, dear. Whatever you say, dear.") but still loves him with all her heart and works towards his goals (Or something. You know what I mean, right?)

Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if it all backfires on Ed and after the dust settles he ends up as the Empress' pet. Empress says JUST AS PLANNED
