See, you don't have to play the Exalted. You can also choose to play the Dragon-Kings, Mayaincatec dinosaur-men who were among the first races in Creation. Really big on the Unconquered Sun, chief god of the Solars. Not as powerful as most Exalted (though a definite match for younger Dragon-Bloods), these guys choose from 'paths' instead of Charm Trees. These Paths expand a DK's understanding of the world, but can also transform them into unworldy beings. One Path, for example, turns you into mini-SHODAN (or ED-209, depending on your interpretation).
Ghosts are a special case. See, Creation's dead normally reincarnate, but for some reason, ghosts are too tied to the living world by things called Fetters, and as such refuse to reincarnate. Normally, ghosts are doomed to repeat their lives with minor changes (seeing as they became ghosts on account of refusing to leave said lives behind), but heroic ghosts can forge their own destinies, as opposed to being forged into soulsteel (metal made of still-conscious souls).
Thaumaturges and Heroic Mortals are almost always one and the same. See, mortals in Exalted have the wrong end of the shit stick. They can never achieve the heights of power the Exalted can reach,- hell, TRYING to learn Exalted Charms can cause mortals to explode. That said, they can manage some pretty handy stuff on their own. Thaumaturges can learn very, very basic magic requiring long rituals, while Heroic Mortals are mortals who, though not Exalted, still try to seize their destiny in their hands. Some of them, powered by this destiny, can even have the potential to outdo the Exalted in the short term. |
