I'm really not sure what else to call the setting.

Think Trigun or Wild Arms (in b4 "get back to /v/ or /a/). Western-flavored setting where guns are as much a status symbol as they are a weapon. Each one is hand-tooled, a work of art, and wearing one broadcasts to everyone nearby "Yes, I am a gunslinger, an artisan with a firearm. Watch yourself."

Or, alternately, "I am a dandy from New York that has too much money, too little sense, and I will not live through the week."

    Could this work, /tg/?

Weird West would be more appropriate, given the magic gun things.
    >> Anonymous 10/18/09(Sun)20:34 No.6330124
There would have to be something setting aside firearms to prevent them from simply proliferating like crazy and losing their luster. Caster-style weirdness could help, making guns expensive and difficult to maintain and repair, with expensive ammunitions that not every joe can afford, or even find.

I hate to go weaboo here... but then, Trigun, Wild Arms, it's been breached. I'm getting a Wakizashi sort of vibe from the guns here - like carrying them sets the person apart as a superior class. Not quite the same, but similar concept.
    >> Anonymous 10/18/09(Sun)20:35 No.6330135
I was going to say Spirit of the Century would be great for this, but the more I think about it the more I'm thinking it wouldn't work that well at all. There'd need to be a system with a way for different people to specialize in guns in completely different ways (like in Trigun, where the party had Vash as a speed/precision shooter with a special handgun, Merle as a user of lots of small guns, Milly as a specialist with less-than-lethal firearms, and Wolfwood as a Heavy Weapons guy).

This means you'd need a system where specializing in one type of gun means more than just a +1 to that gun and a -1 to other guns, and moreover the guns themselves would need some sort of specialization in the form of a gadget system of some sort.

I'm not sure there's a system that can do it well... but fuck I really want one that does.

But if guns are a status symbol, then everybody and their mother would have one. Else ammo would cost an arm and a leg, as there aren't enough out there to qualify insane mass production of it.

sounds cool, but how about making a post-post-post-apocalyptic 'gunslinger' type future, where the art of gunmaking has almost been lost? that'd be a cool excuse to make guns rare artifacts, or even put the production of new ones into the hands of monks or religious cults/sects.

Of course, he can never miss and plans wins the hand of his beloved in a shooting competition. However the last bullet is controlled by the devil and it's only by the redeeming power of their pure love that the bullet misses the girl's heart.

    How about this:

There's nothing supernatural about the guns. There's just very few people with the patience to sit down and craft a gun, especially since assembly-line gun production is a hanging offense... as is building a gun within 5 miles of a city.

The propellant, however, is mystical. The exact formula is only known to those that go on a vision quest, and those that try to copy it... well... it goes badly.

Indeed, a gunslinger could be recognized just as quickly by the cleaning and loading gear he carried with him (doubtlessly immaculate and in some sort of characteristic case) as by the iron he carries. And of course some weapons would be ancestral, much like a Holland and Holland or similar heirloom arms are today.

    epic scenario.
    >> Anonymous 10/18/09(Sun)20:54 No.6330373
Guns don't have to be rare. SPECIAL guns, on the other hand, would have to be rare. Anyone can get an assembly line equalizer, but few would have the luck, skill, or resources to come into the possession of a truly special weapon. A character's backstory would have to explain how they got their capital G Gun and what separates their Gun from a lower-case g gun would have to be worked out in chargen. Superscience ("My Gun was built by Nicola Tesla. It uses gas pressure to spin a small dynamo that drives a coil around the barrel to help accelerate the round."), mysticism ("My Gun was built by Sam Colt himself, and fires the condensed guilt of people shot by lawmen."), or whatever else you can think of should be doable (and encouraged), and it means ordinary folk can keep their ordinary guns without having to bend the setting over backwards to make its thematic conceit work.

    OP here.
So - what I have so far is:
Gunslingers are a sort of samurai (or ronin) ersatz. They are the only ones capable of wielding guns - not just because of determination or skill, but because the gun chooses its wielder. Also because only a gunslinger who has gone on a vision quest can craft bullets.

I want to work the Dead Man's Gun into this setting somehow.

Cities are like Greek City-States in that they each govern themselves and vary greatly, yet have similar (if not identical) languages and religions. All firearms in cities are registered and strictly controlled; the penalties for having illegal weapons are usually very harsh.

Towns are technically under the jursdiction of the closest city, but are usually difficult to access and are left to their own devices. They genrally adhere to one of two policies: 1) all weapons must be turned in to the sheriff while their owners are in town, or 2) just don't shoot a local and or inside a building and everything is cool.

In between the scattered areas of human settlement are vast wastelands and desserts teaming with slavers and bandits. The only way to cross is in numbers and heavily armed.

DO NOT GO INTO THE MOUNTAINS. And don't ask why.

    >> Anonymous 10/18/09(Sun)21:00 No.6330431
No, no, let's do this Tolkien style:

"Back when the west was much wilder than it is now, twelve revolvers were made by a master gunsmith as the culmination of his life's work. These guns were perfect: finely-machined, balanced, accurate and nigh-indestructible they swiftly became much sort-after in the wake of the smith's death. A great shoot-out occurred and the guns were seized by the victorious.
Now, two decades later, the twelve gun wander the land on the hips of twelve master gunslingers, each prized from the dead hands of a previous owner.
You are one of those gunslingers, this is your land. Go get!"
    >> Anonymous 10/18/09(Sun)21:01 No.6330443
    >>6330379

I dunno about the "Gun choosing its wielder" bit, but a psychological basis for the guns working would be cool.

How about this: Guns in the setting are only made by special artisans who hand-make every gun independently, weaving special magic/alchemy/whatever into the individual parts.

The guns are, effectively, parasitic: they live off of the person who wields them. What they take from you depends on the gun; some might sap your life, some take memories, some take willpower. So only the strongest (or those with the least to lose) are willing to take up these weapons and use them; and when every shot eats away at you a little bit more, you learn to spare ammunition.
    >> Anonymous 10/18/09(Sun)21:02 No.6330449
    >>6330397
Feudalism means that the setting loses possibilities. Each class has a very specific thing it's supposed to be doing, and a member of a given class isn't doing its Very Specific Thing they're a threat to the social order. If you're a serf in medieval Europe and you get your hands on a suit of armor, the general assumption will be that you killed someone and took their armor.

While this can make for SOME stories, the range of stories possible in such a setting is much more narrow than it needs to be. This is why most game settings tend to be organized in a very modern way relative to the real world with feudal elements only in isolated regions.

Why does the setting have to have ONLY special guns? Why not have Super Special Guns for some and normal assembly line crap for the normal folk? The Only Super Special Guns Exist line of reasoning just warps the setting unnecessarily with people finding excuses for why there are bullets or why Super Special Guns exist at all instead of normal guns. Just include normal guns in the setting as well and all those flimsy constructions you guys are working with go away. People with Super Special Guns are still the focus of the setting AND you don't have to rape internal consistency to make it work.

Unknown Armies could work for this. Each PC would have an artifact gun, either made by a master Mechanomancer or was present at some significant event in history. John Wilkes Booth's pistol could be a major artifact for having been the implement of Abraham Lincoln usurping Jesus as Archetype of the Martyr, for example.

Remember, there was a time IRL when there were guns, but no mass-production. They were all made by hand by gunsmiths.

But let's compromise. Lets say that for years, artisans had been making these special guns; but just recently you have people coming up with ideas like mass production and normal gunpowder.

Now, all of a sudden anyone can have a gun, with enough money; sure it's not as powerful, but it's not eating away at your mind either. It would be an interesting conflict to have, as these "ronin" gunslingers are being phased out by the sheer numbers produced by new technology.

I like the 54 super-guns idea. They are the Archeotechs, the perfect weapons.

Every other 'special' gun, even those with nearly the same level of quality, are copies of one or more of those guns.

To own a real one is to wield to power of a god; but it is extremely difficult to discover their authenticity.

The different sects, religions, and schools that forge new weapons devote themselves to one or two of the designs (which are kept on ancient manuscripts and passed down from master to master).

Colt... Winchester... Deringer... every man alive today knows these names. Some praise them as gods, some damn them as devils, but all know them and, love or hate, still respect them.

Such is the way of life for one like me. The feel of cold steel in a clenched fist, the tension of a finger on a trigger, the rush as a bullet screams from the barrel towards a target. I live for these.

Some say that only certain souls can handle a gun, that a gun chooses who fires it, or that every shot fired drains a man of health and will and memory until the last life a gun takes is the one who wields it. Fairytales, says I. If anything has drained me, it is the pain of seeing men become fools when a gun is put in unskilled hands.

I am a Gunman, and the pistol in my hand is my only companion. To me, the crack of a shot is sweeter than a lover's whisper, and the pain of a bullet like an angel's kiss.

    OP here. Let's get writefaggin'.

The Guns were crafted decades ago. No one knows when, exactly, because it was never written. The first one came to light sixty-three years ago, and you can trace all of them to back around that time. Except for the two, but that's besides the point. As soon as you have a Gun - and you know how to use it - you are set apart. You are a Gunslinger.

Each one is a work of art. Each one is passed from master to student, or from loser to winner, when a Gunslinger is taken down by someone with a slugtosser and enough luck on his side. Having a Gun doesn't make you invincible - just damn near it. Remember that.

Over the years, each of the guns has taken on two nicknames. The first is always based on their most known `slinger, or their defining traits. Thunder. The Red Revolver. Stark's Gun. And then, there's its other name... the Five of Clubs. The Queen of Diamonds. The Ace of Hearts. Whoever came up with the deck analogy was an odd one, but it stuck.

And then... then there are the Jokers. The Black Joker, the Dead Man's Gun, that is always found on a corpse. No man who carries the Black Joker will die in a firefight, but they will never pass the gun to a student. And the Red Joker... you can never pin that one down. It's almost a myth.

And yes. One day, you will carry the legacy of Tesla. One day, you will pack the Dynamo in your holster, spitting steel and lightning at anyone fool enough to stand between you and what's best for the people of the citystates.

    But not today.

Today, you pick up that goddamn slugtosser and get back to target practice, before I forget the promise I made and chuck you out of my hacienda. Comprende, kid?

Back to the Guns-as-parasites option; perhaps the guns vary by both their wielder and whatever it is they feed on.

The shots from the pistols of a fiery lawman out to avenge his family glow white-hot as they consume his anger. The rifle of the silent assassin fires silent and unseen as it eats away at his identity.

Hand-made guns were readily available before mass production. Entire armies had them, and individuals at the bottom of the social order could afford them for hunting. Mass production made them (generally) more accurate, more reliable, more powerful, and much cheaper. Artisan guns were (and STILL are) a big deal, but remember that just because a gun was hand made that doesn't mean it's good. Hell, artisan guns were ALSO not always that good, since most were built to look good on the gun rack of some guy that probably couldn't even fire the damn thing (or if he could, would probably only use it once or twice a year in a fox chase or something like that).

    Gunslinger Styles.
These are general types/ideas, mind you.
Power: Blowing holes in the walls, ripping off arms with a single shot, piercing through "bulletproof" substances.
Speed: Attempting to emulate a gatling gun with a revolver, quick-draw, fast reloading.
Precision: Long-distance shooting, disarming, shooting other bullets out of the air.
Gunplay/Bulletplay: Ricochet shots, using the gun as a melee weapon, bullet-stacking.

These could be properties of the gun or the gunslinger. Your call.

There are three kinds of firearm in the world, broadly speaking.

First, there's the Cards. The Capital-G-Guns. The Big 54. Do I need to keep going? No? Good.

Then there's the Shooting Irons. It takes a gunsmith years to make one of these, and they can only swing it if they're a little crazy, and if they've gotten a hold of one of the 54 for a while. There are - maybe - 2000 of these in the whole world, and most of them were special commission jobs for important lawmen. They're damn fine guns, and most of them have at least a ghost of the power that one of the Cards has.

Then... you've got slugtossers. Everything else. Metal balls propelled through barrels, rifled or not, by a simple explosive charge. Some sidearms. Some long-guns. Some shotguns. Doesn't matter much, because in the end, those guns are only as good as their wielder... and less good. They break. They misfire. They add range, and stopping power - nothing else.

Each of the authentic guns has a small 'card' painstakingly printed or inscribed (permanently) somewhere on them (sometimes the mark is hidden). With all of the amazing styles and designs they came in, no one would have been able to make any connection between them.

Obviously, many people have subsequently applied the same marks to copies, but close analysis by a master can reveal what is real and what is fake.

Maybe a master smith branded (Oh, I like that, the mark can be called a Brand since branding cattle is very wild westish) each of his apprentices' masterpieces, as well as those that he managed to find.

Anyway, the collection is universally called "The Deck."

I think we can all agree that that is a given.

The city states, assembly line crap existing while the real status symbols are the hand built guns, and throw in a bit of the Samurai thing in here. Perhaps even the idea of 12/21/54 special guns existing.

You'd have nobility with handcrafted guns, citizenry with less flashy and considerably less dangerous guns, and a group of potential BBEGs all armed with epic and rare weapons.

There was a time when guns were more than just weapons. They were symbols of status, elegant tools of the trade. The swing of a gunslingers arm to catch a target between his cross hairs was the same as the stroke of an artists brush across the canvass. Men only drew down to draw blood. Now it seems like kids will pull out pistols just for laughs.

There are only 54 real guns left. Only 54 guns like the ones I remember. I am lucky enough to carry one of those guns. At first I thought to hold something like it would make me happy but really, it just made me miserable.

Everyday now it seems I can't escape the pursuit of hunting dogs with jaws of solid lead. I've felt the bite of every breed from .44 and .38's to .45's and 00 buck shot. And by the scars of their bites I am made a marked man just as I am marked by the Joker on the handle of my gun.

Personally, the system needs to be simple.

1d6. You hit on a six. Whatever happens, you hit. Better circumstances make it five or six. Motive makes it four or more. Invoking the power of the gun (and your own weakness) makes it three or more. One always misses, always.

If you hit, the victim rolls 1d6. On a six they can send the bullet elsewhere, ricocheting off for effect or into another target. They can move the bullet elsewhere on a five or better if they call on the power of their own gun (and suffer other, more fateful pains). Otherwise, a score of four or five means some grievous wound, and one through three is instant death.

Gun battles are quick, simple and deadly.

"See this, kid? Yeah, yeah, pick your jaw up off the floor. This is one of the Guns. Not like that pellet-spitter you've got. This one's called Hawk's Eye, the Queen of Spades. Might not be the most powerful, or the fastest draw, but she's damn-near perfect when it comes to distance and accuracy. Seems like half the time I barely even have to see the target to hit it."

The wizened old Gunslinger glanced up into the cloudless sky. I followed, wondering what he was watching. Suddenly, he grabbed Hawk's Eye, pointed it almost straight up, and pulled the trigger. To my surprised, even with ears uncovered, the sound of the shot was far from as loud as I expected.

"Might wanna stand back a little, kiddo. That's a hat on your head, not a helmet."

Puzzled, I took a few steps to one side. Seconds later, there was a dull thump, as a buzzard hit the earth where I'd just stood, a perfect vertical bullet-hole bored straight through its skull from beneath.

I hadn't even seen the carrion-feeder overhead, and he had struck it as easily as I would shoot empty bottles off a fencepost.

Truly, the Guns were weapons worth the awe and respect given them.

The first gun is The Pistol, the finest ever made, invariably felling a man every time it fires.

The second is The Rifle, from which no thing can hide once the wielder's sighted it.

The third is The Shotgun, two barrels that expel whatever form of harm takes the firer's whimsy.

The fourth is The Howitzer, the grandfather of all cannons that can heave devastation to the horizon.

The fifth and the sixth are The Twins, powerful pistols in their own right, woe betide the world should any man wield both at once.

Seven is The Repeater, a rifle with a blisteringly fast rate of fire.

Eight is The Blade, a regal symbol of power taking the form of a rifle built into a cleft sword.

Nine is The Knife, a pistol as quiet as the grave and yearning to fill some.

Ten is The Bore, just short of a cannon and capable of gutting a freight train.

Eleven is The Storm, ending its foes not with lead but with the fury of the heaven's own lightning.

Twelve is The Redeemer, dispensing life or death as the wielder wills.

There are, of course, rumors of The Terrible Thirteen, The Silver Bell, The Seventh Seal, The Endbringer. The last gun the Smithlord made, and perhaps the one that slew him in the making. No such weapon has ever been found, but if it were to exist it would be a weapon of nigh apocalyptic firepower.

Just posting a thought, haven't really browser through the thread other than catching a few comments here and there, but you need two things: Gunmen and the Guns.

The Guns are those masterwork guns that make any novice feel like an Ace. Impossibly accurate, stout, capable of sending the cheapest cartridge out with punishing force and accuracy.

Gunmen are people with a nigh-on supernatural ability to make mundane guns perform. They can take the cheapest, rustiest piece of junk and bullseye the dick off a tick at a hundred yards.

Combine the two and you have a force of nature.

Certain guns should work well in congress with each other/give bonus when people use them together. I.e. using and Ace and an Eight together makes them more accurate or something. Or if people band together in poker hands they get special powers. For instance you'd have a Dead Mans hand group or a Royal Flush gang. Getting a pair should have some kind of bonus even one as simple as no penalty for wielding two weapons and you get an extra attack.

I like the idea that the Aces and Faces (K, Q, J) have particular noteworthiness, but the numbered Cards, while slightly less than the Aces and Faces, shouldn't have any particular significance to their numbers (the Ten of Diamonds shouldn't be twice as great as the Five of Diamonds, for example).

now of course each weapon is essentially the blueprint for all other weapons of its type (all shotguns are descendant in terms of design from The Shotgun for example) so there are all sorts of guns, but a very small number of Guns.

Such is the power of the weapons that some probably have whole factions built up around them, a kingdom or state protected by The Howitzer for example.

    idk, spitballing.

Should the Guns also have an effect on the wielder? Say a man with bad eyesight finds himself in possession of a Gun that specializes in accuracy and distance. Would he suddenly find himself not needing his glasses anymore and maybe eventually have better eyesight than a normal man?

Or a particularly slow man finds himself wielding a fast action revolver. Does he suddenly start becoming faster and more agile in his everyday movements?

Face Card guns tend to be highly specialized, the rest tend to be more General Purpose. The Deuces are always small guns - snub-nosed four-shot revolvers or derringers. The Aces are unquestionably powerful. The Jokers are godlike, but damn the wielder to an early grave. For the Black Joker, anyway. I like the idea of the Red Joker being a complete enigma - like it erases the person from history entirely, leaving only stories of the gun itself

As much as poker is associated with the Wild West, this fits perfectly, and also might explain the reason the Cards have the title "Cards" - just as holding certain cards make a winning hand, someone noticed that those who wield certain Guns can pull off things together that might not do alone, and the name stuck.

I saw a shoot out 'tween two Gunmen once. Both carried one of the cards, genuine 54ers. Don't know their names though. Gunmen ain't known for their socialbility in the main. Each had a posse o' men with them, and twixt the pair of them and their bands they turned main street into a shooting gallery.

I've see men die before, live out here long enough and you'll see your share too, but I aint ever seen nothing like that day. I saw how bullets seemed to bend about the Gunmen like they were hitting water. I saw people get shot by their own shadows, boys barely grown enough to shave turning old and dying in just a few moments, bullets chasing down running men like a swarm o' angry bees. They all died until in the end it was just the pair o' them facing each other. Never saw who one though. One saw me gawping through the saloon window and put a round in my leg. Damn shot straight through wall and bust out my kneecap. I still walk funny. When the dust had settled down and I's stopped screaming they told me they never found another body lying round. But I figure there's someone out there with two cards and I'll be damned if i'm ever curious bout who it is.

There was no train they couldn't rob, no lawman they couldn't turn away. They was rich and mighty powerful.
But, those guns, they's be having a way of messing with a man's head, djknow? When you think you're invincible, ya start actin like it! Eventually the law wasn't enough and thems back east got involved.
The cavalry caught up with them just down the track from here where the canyon deadends - it took two-hundred men and horses and half-a-dozen cannon two days to do them in! Those guns where sealed up in iron bindings and, to this day, are kept in the vault at Knox!

My name is Jake, and I’ve got one of the guns. The big ones. The legendary ones. Mine is the ten of spades, “Atonement.” Why this gun chose me, I’ll never know. Atonement is a lawman’s gun, the gun of the righteous. Before, I hated the evil of this world, but never really found the motivation to stop it. I even once walked away when I saw a woman being brutally raped by some punk gang. Now, though, I have to stop it. I must prevent evil. These guns, they’re not normal guns. Obviously they’re more powerful than regular ones, but there’s something different. Now, if I see something bad going on, my insides burn and my head pounds until I intervene. After I put down the criminal bastards, there’s this high like you wouldn’t ever imagine, even from the crazy shit those wasters sell. Essentially, the gun has me hostage, but I don’t mind. Now I have the power to destroy the enemies of justice. In my hands is the hammer of the righteous. May whatever lies beyond here have mercy on those who would stop me. I will not.

"I'm an old man these days. A dead man, or close to it. I'm too old. Too old for this." He leaned back in his chair. The wood squeaked and squealed. "Ever seen one before?"

I shook my head, "No sir."

He reached with a liver spotted hand, skin like crinkled paper, and pulled his jacket open. It sat in a holster like I never seen before, tightened up on his chest. I would have asked him why it was like that, but before I could there was a thunderous boom and the old man and the chair he'd been sitting in were sent back, tumbling over each other.

One of the men who'd been sitting behind us walked forward, his shotgun aimed at the old man's body, face down, still breathing, if only barely. "Nice Gun ya' got there." He pushed with the toe of his boot, turning the man over. "Lemme get a lil' look."

He let him. For a split second, the gunman had a great look at the barrel, and the bullet that spiraled from the tip. "R-ruby Red," coughed the old Gunman. "Ace a hearts." And then he was gone.

I'm off for the night. Update me.

Did you know that IRL, the art for face cards are based off political satire?

For example, the king of hearts has a sword threw his head because the king the card is based off of (idk who) killed himself.

With some research, the real life histories of the cards could have game effects, like the King of Hearts trying to kill its owner. Its a fabulous piece of equipment, no doubt about it, but it seems to have a tendency to jam in a firefight, to fire off a round at random when the owner is trying to hide, and, some say, it gets into their minds and starts tellin' em to off themselves.

Ya hear tales told all the time about Gunmen who carry the cards... but it's always the Faces or the Numbers... I have yet to heard 'bout any soul what holds the Aces, and no man alive would be fool enough to hunt down one of the two Jokers.

They say no soul can "own" (inasmuch as a mortal man could own such things as a Gun) more than two of the Cards at any time, if he should even have the devil's luck enough to find one, let alone two, else the power drives him mad. Or so they say, since no man's ever been seen with more than two, and the few who have been seen with two are so rare as t'be near myths themselves.

But I can't help but wonder what might happen, if a body should ever hold the power of The Four Aces, if such a thing is even possible...

Another day, another town, if you could call it that. The town was one street with a handful of building in various states of disrepair, and the saloon was the only building that was in any habitable state (unsurprisingly).

I slid in through the front door of the saloon, slipping onto a barstool and ordering a finger of whiskey. The saloon was similar to any saloon: town drunk at the bar, poker game going on at a table in the back, half a dozen washouts lingering around the other tables. Almost immediately I drew a worn deck of cards out of a pocket and started shuffling them: one part old habit from my gambling days, one part intelligence gathering, which soon paid off as the town drunk sidled over (looking for a free drink no doubt).

"'Ey boy, yous ever heard of the The Deck?"
"Who hasn't? What's it to you anyway?"
"Ignore him." the barkeeper chimed in, "He's always spouting some crackpot story about The Deck, saying he saw one of the 54."
I motioned for the barkeeper to let the drunk continue.
"Yeeeash I saw one of them, mean old thing it was, could put a hole clean through three men, front to back! Silent as night too, or so they say."
"Do you know which one it was?"
"The Gunslinger referred to it as "His Haymaker", though that's probably to keep it on the down low, if ya know what I mean!" He said, bursting into hacking laughter. Whilst he recovered himself, I spread the cards in my hand in a wide arc, making sure each card could be easily seen.

"Did you see a playing card on the gun?"
"Ooooh yeah, was carved right onta the barrel, was kinda small but I've still got a good eye on me! Heh heh...." He looked intently at the cards before sliding a card out from near the middle: the Ace of Spades.
"Looked just like this! And I'm damn sure he passed through here not more than a week ago! Heading north outta here, said something about settling some old grudge..."

A smile flitted across my face: if the drunk was right, then my quarry was no more than a week ahead of me. I thanked the drunk by ordering him a fresh drink, paid the barman for the drinks, and slipped out as quiet as I entered. Saddling up, I rode out of town hot on the trail of my quarry.

I may not be a Gunslinger, but God willing, by week's end I will be.

So what if the entire deck gets together every decade or century to have a "poker tournament" or "blackjack duels," where all the cards are collected into a deck and dealt out as hands to "players."
Of course having a better combination brings an advantage, but the real challenge is to win with the final hands you're dealt, so a straight, although having a considerable advantage, doesn't necessarily beat three of a king.

Eh, it's a bit too lethal. Combats that can predictably end in one round are rarely "epic". Moreso if there's no real difference between gunslingers. Possibly even worse than how lethal your system is is that it doesn't take into account the guns at all. One person's relic derringer is EXACTLY the same as another person's relic Kentucky longrifle, and that completely misses what the system is all about.

Clubs: Power. It doesn't matter what caliber a Club is. It leaves an exit wound the size of a man's head, or larger. They say that if you get a Club-flush together, you could shoot through the earth.
Spades: Precision. A man with a Spade can pick a gnat out of the air a mile off.
Hearts: Speed. Like the hammering of a rat's heart in its chest, a single Heart can fill the air with an army's worth of gunfire, always drawn before the other.
Diamonds: Trick shots/gunplay. A Diamond always hits exactly what the slinger wants it to hit... some say that Diamong slingers are just lucky. Son, if you could bottle that luck, you could rule the world.

The Ace of Clubs. It was also called The Gun with No Name, odd since it had a title.

It was a rather plain looking six-gun. It didn't have the exotic features or elaborate inlay of some of the other Deck members. It was just a rugged, simple, pistol. But it served its master well, when it allowed itself to be wielded. Anyone who wasn't worthy couldn't get a shot off, the gun would just refuse to work. But for the one in a million man who it could call its owner...

The action was smooth and clean, the trigger always ready to fall at a hair pull or hold back if the Owner was about to shoot someone he didn't want to by accident. It flowed free out of its holster in a split-second when needed and stayed there at all other times. It shot fast and accurate, it would put the bullet where it was pointed and nowhere else. It was a gun meant for a master gunman, and it served those who sought their own ways in life - whether they were lawmen or bandits if they chose a path with full knowledge of where it would take them and wouldn't allow anyone or anything to get in their way this gun would serve them faithfully to the end of their days.

    Something like this good?

I don't know if this would be too much, but what about adding another set of Guns based off of the Tarot? Or hell, maybe they're a different kind of weapon, like old fashioned axes and swords? Not as powerful as the Deck by themselves, but the skill of their owner can equalize things.

They often work with owners of the Guns because they don't interfere with the "hands" that the Guns might have.

The man looked young, but the hardness in his eyes betrayed his age.
"This here's the Jack of Hearts. Also called the White Crow. Sure, it looks normal, but you won't even see me draw it to shoot you dead."
    The man sat forward.
"I'd be lying if I said I knew how it did it. MY hands don't move that fast..."
    He stood up.
"Well, what're ya waitin' for, kid? We gonna fight or are you gonna wise up? No? Fair enough. I can tell you now that you won't see the next sunrise. This gun is named after an omen of death for a reason."

Poker hands dictate the level of a gunfight.

____ of a kind is a fight between up to four gunslingers

a straight is a gang fight

a full house is a gang against someone(s) better equipped than they

a flush is when all the cards of a certain level are in play

God help you if you witness a Royal Straight Flush unfold, it's only ever happened twice, both times signaled the end or rise of a new power.

This shouldn't be a hard-and-fast rule for all Cards, but more specifically for the various Aces.

Lesser cards should retain similar characteristics (all Spades should be remarkably accurate, for example), but nowhere to the degree of the Aces.

How about the idea that the guns have similar but not identical powers depending on who wields them. Say the 7 of diamonds "The Fox" has powers, of say, duplication. But for one Gunman it duplicates the gun itself (temporarily) so he just pulls as many copies as he needs out of his clothes. But for another Gunman it duplicates himself. For yet another it duplicates the bullets mid flight. All the powers work differently and grow stronger along with its owner as he becomes more used to the Gun but at the expense that he and the gun's 'personalities' merge.

Perhaps then the 55th Card should be The Forbidden Card: a gun that, by all rights shouldn't exist, but somehow does. Rumours can't agree on ANYTHING about it: what it looks like, it's power, who wields it, even whether it exists or not, and most would discard it as wild fantasy and speculation.

While the gunslinger weilds it no gun man-forged nor legendary may fire upon him, not even the Jokers themselves, but neither may they weild a weapon. When the time is right and the era turns, the one with The Rules convenes The Game. He is the only one who may do so, and the only one trusted to.

This. The Dealer is the true "Card 55"... every once in a while he'll pass through town, seeking info about the Cards. Why, nobody knows. But his own sidearm is just as ominous looking as one of the Guns, holding the same power as all four Aces, leading folks to believe it is some previously-unknown Card. Or so it seems. The gun is an ordinary gun... it is the Gunman himself who holds the power.

And for those few who know his secret, well, even they don't know what might happen, should the Dealer one day hold all the Cards...

(Ever seen Sam Elliott as Caretaker in "Ghost Rider"? That's who I picture the Dealer looking like.)

They say she's done in many a 'slinger who thought they could handle her.

But now, you've heard of those massacres happened north of here, in the Gultch? I met a guy who survived. Said in the middle o' it all, was one man, covered in blood, holding up a nice little pistol, red-handled with a big ol' heart on the side. Guy was just standing there, bleedin' like noone's business, shooting everything that moved and some things that wern't; and once he heard his laugh he couldn't do nothing but run...

Gunsmiths are a rare and unusual addition to a town. In that they generally attract some very unsavory types. But unsavory types that keep on their very best behavior, and out of trouble within town. Basically the Town Gunsmith is the very last guy you'd ever want to piss off.
    The less said the better.
Making masterwork custom weaponry hasn't been in much demand and isn't very steady work, so they usually get work doing other firearm related jobs (usually instructing people on the use of a certain firearm or renting out shooting ranges) they may take on other jobs (Blacksmithing or running a General Store, some have even worked as impromptu Bounty Hunters.) But the most dedicated usually stick to Firearms as far as work goes.
