10/11/09(Sun)20:46 No.6232878fallout from the AI's brief existence remains, though. There isn't a place on earth not touched by the airborne nano-plagues. by programming, most are quite harmless. Some give little worse then the common cold. a few strengthen the body. the rarest mutate the infected in bizarre ways.
rumors say that fragments of the AI still exist, and that those infected with pieces of the original nanities are changed somehow, or even taken over, abandoning their old lives and disappearing.
the governments stepped in quickly to clean up the mess, loudly calling for calm while quietly fighting for what remained. legislation was passed, banning AI research. Religious unrest looms, and scientists are sometimes quietly shunned. the science lab, the research facility, no one wants these things built in their town anymore.
and behind it all, on shaky youtube videos and conspiratorial chatrooms, from the mouths of madmen infected with minds unhinged by nanotech infection, there are stories. men walk, eyes unblinking, lines like circuitry drawn over their skin, hunting down scientific research, rare materials and gifted scientists to steal or spirit away. They perform feats of science and electronic wizardry no human could comprehend, and their ultimate goals are a complete mystery.
basically a tech equivalent to the low-fantasy setting. nanotech isn't at the level of magic in high-fantasy, but it does just enough to be terrifying. the world is otherwise normal, if a little shaken by the experience. everything is explainable, but humans are seldom rational in the face of change.
nanotech is treated like the witchcraft of old, and AI the devil. those touched by either are either lab specimens, celebrities, or burned for it by the fearful
wizards exist, in a sense. they can do some scary shit. but they're more like gandalf, moving secretly and working subtly then wandering around tossing fireballs. |
