The brass bathtub took up most of the floorspace of the inn room; two maids had had to carry it in, then ferry up several kettles of hot water, demanding a significant gratuity. Drisryna was happily immersed, shoulders and knees above the rim of the tub, her hair hanging loose to the floor behind her. She was humming softly, the tune strange and unmelodic to Alaric's ears. He tried to concentrate on honing the edge of his sword.

A sloshing sound, as the girl shifted. "Wash my hair," she said, in perfunctory fashion.

Alaric grunted, not looking up from the sword. "Wash it yourself."

"It's too long." Her voice turned petulant, the spoiled child emerging. "And you like my hair."

"I like your hair very much. But you didn't ask." He could hear his own mother in his voice, demanding politeness. This had become an ongoing, quiet contest of wills. He could tell it was deliberate; she tried to command or coax him into serving her, doing any number of petty tasks. He clung to the simple logic of the harried parent. "If you asked, I might consider it."

Another, pouting sound. She arched, breasts breaking the surface of the water, trying to draw his eyes. As he kept his attentions on the weapon, she finally slumped down again, letting out an exasperated huff. "Please, will you come wash my hair."

He stifled a smirk, setting the sword aside and rising, doffing his own shirt and picking up one of the kettles from the floor. Kneeling behind the tub, he placed a hand on top of her head, her hair warm and silken. He drew her face back, upwards, and slipped his other hand beneath her chin before leaning down to kiss her. Her tongue slipped past his lips, quick and teasing.

"Hmpf. Lean forward." A splash of water slipped over the brim as the drow girl wrapped arms around her shins, resting her cheek on a knee, eyes happily closed as he lifted her hair and bent to his work.

"When we received the first ransom demand...I paid. It was exorbitant, but anything for my daughter. So long as she comes back unharmed. Anything..." The spice merchant was on the verge of breakdown, eyes sunken and creased with sleeplesness and worry. His assistant placed a hand on the rotund merchant's arm; he looked to have lost some sleep also, though he was clearly far less distraught. He spoke for his employer.

"We sent the first payment as requested. A single servant took it into the woods, in a cart. At a rendezvous-point, they took the gold and the cart, sending the servant back on foot, alone. He brought back another note, demanding even more."

"I will do what I can to help; but I must tell you I'm no tracker. If they've a camp deep in the forest, I'll have little chance of stumbling across it. Certainly not before they find me."

"That, we can help with. We know...a priest, who was able to perform a divination. We know approximately where their camp is--so long as they haven't moved. We know there is a building there--a church. I hope this will be enough. After the first ransom, Master Vries doesn't have enough available coin to pay for mercenaries, or to keep up with more and more ransom demands. We're not poor--but most of the wealth is in the form of goods, animals--things like that." HIs expression turned rueful. "We could try to pay them in spice, I suppose, but I'm afraid they would simply think we were trying to cheat them. We can't risk that."

Alaric reached across the table, placing his hand atop the merchant's forearm. "I'll find your daughter, sir; I promise." Vries' lips pressed tight, and he nodded, clearly on the edge of tears. The assistant rose, gesturing toward the door.

As they came to the house's foyer, Drisryna broke in. "And what of payment?" The assistant looked as though she had just spat upon the floor. Alaric raised a hand, saying "no, that's not necessa-"

"Nau, it is. The man's daughter is worth ransom? Then what of those who go to bring her back? They are worth less than the man who feeds your horses?"

"As I said, we have precious little coin to pay anyone with. Surely they still have the first ransom--you may have as much of that as you like."

Drisryna scowled, a familiar sight. "Maybe it is not there. Then we have nothing. This paladin, maybe he risks his life for nothing, he is foolish that way. I will not let him."

The assistant chewed on his lip for a while. Finally he spoke. "She was to be married next year; her dowry is promised. But...they can hardly complain if some of the dowry goes to keeping the bride alive." He tapped his chin. "One percent of the dowry, or whatever you bring back of the ransom--whichever is more. I will trust the paladin to account for the gold honestly." The last a bit coldly, as he nodded to Alaric. Drisryna was unconvinced.

    "Ten percent."

The assistant drew her aside, the two of them speaking in soft, muttered tones. Alaric simply stood by the doorway, a sour taste in his mouth. Finally, though, the two of them seemed to come to some agreement. Drisryna was scowling less, and the merchant's assistant seemed content with the arrangement. Paladin and drow left the house, evening turning to night outside.

    "That was crass."

"Waela d'nilok. It is no wonder you must dress like a peasant. But don't worry--I will take care of you." Her expression was smug. "Besides, that is why I say it to the man's lackey, not himself."

Alaric could only shrug, already thinking of their journey ahead.

Dawn was imminent, the air damp and cold, still dark beneath the tree canopy. Drisryna returned, in a half-crouch, moving through the brush with a silence that Alaric could only envy. She gestured toward the clearing, the old temple with roof half-collapsed, then performed a quick series of fluid gestures with the fingers of one hand. The paladin could only shrug, completely at a loss. Drysryna rolled her eyes in exasperation, leaned in, and cupped hands around his ear as she whispered. "Two guards at door, one asleep. Not enough. Something missing." He nodded in return, then gestured back toward the house.

Alaric entered the clearing in full view of the guards, two men in shabby leathers, with crossbow and axe. One was leaning against the old church, sitting half-sprawled on a stool. The axe-man paused, mid-yawn, to nudge him with a foot, startling him awake.

"There's no need for any troub-" Alaric started to say. The crossbow-man was staggering to his feet, raising his weapon to aim at the paladin.

"No one goes in-" His voice turned to a gurgle, blood gushing from his mouth as Drisyna emerged from behind him, slipping her dagger back out from the side of his neck. With chilling ease, she slipped it into his kidney, twisted, then shoved his dying body forward onto the grass. The bandit with the axe turned, startled, and was raising it toward the drow when Alaric's shield crashed into him, driving him into the wall before running him through with his longsword.

"So foolish, letting them see you." Dirsryna crouched, wiping her blade on the sentry's clothes. She lifted his hand, glancing at a ring on one of his fingers, then let the hand flop down with a curled lip of disdain. Inside, the church was empty, dusty, old pews heaped in a corner. But along one wall, a large floorstone had been pried up and shoved aside, a ladder going down the gaping hole beneath, faint light flickering from somewhere below.

They slipped down into dark catacombs, unlit. Alaric muttered a brief prayer, clasping his symbol of Torm, and it began to glow with a pale light, and earning him another roll of the eyes from his companion. They were in burial catacombs, horizontal niches carved into the walls on each side. Most were empty, only a few occupied by ancient bones, heaped with mounds of dust and nearly-decomposed rags.

The tunnel twisted, occasionally branching off into a short dead-end. Then, turning a corner, they saw flickering light from the room ahead. A man was seated with his back to them, grinding something with a pestle, muttering to himself. Two raggedly-dressed figures stood near the doorway, their backs turned, sihouetted by the candle light. Drisryna moved forward with those silent, graceful steps, dagger in hand as she approached one of the sentries, and without a noise she drove the knife into the back of its neck. With a gasping groan, it turned, face a half-rotten mass, and reached for her.

She yelped, leaping back, stumbling against the wall of the narrow tunnel. Alaric yelled her name, then growled out another blessing, the blade of his sword coming alight with flickering blue flames. His first blow seemed to make the nearest zombie explode, crumbling away in burning, curling shreds. The second hurled itself against his shield, reeling him onto his back leg. He thrust into its belly, causing a foul stench of burning, rotten flesh, but not quite staggering it.

The robed figure had turned--human, staring with hateful, startled eyes. "Interruptions! Interruptions! Always people disturbing my work! I will kill you! And then make you into something better!" He gestured wildly, and several skeletal figures rose from the heaps of rubbish in the shadowy corners of the room, some weilding rusty weapons, one still wearing most of an ancient suit of armor and holding an axe. "Kill them, my pets!" His voice had become shrill, hysterical.

Drisryna had recovered herself, and was fighting at Alaric's side. She moved nimbly with sword and shield, her short blade doing little damage to the bony figures around them, but keeping them at bay, covering his flank. Alaric had no time to think, no breath to curse. He merely slashed and chopped, hacking at the stiffly-moving undead like cordwood, needing to smash them bodily apart. His glowing blade burst bone and rotten flesh where it struck, but the numbers of skeletons were crowding them against the entrance of the tunnel. A skeleton crumpled; another was shattered through the spine, its teeth still chattering as its arms fell to useless pieces. In a brief opening, he could see the mage sprinkling something onto the floor, chanting, his voice growing louder.

"Dree! Get him!" Alaric set his shoulder into his shield, and drove forward, plowing into the feather-light undead before him. They were knocked back into each other, forced into the wall; though, insensate to confusion or pain, they simply reached around his shield, clawing at him, weapons raking against his armor. Disryna didn't hesitate, leaping forward into the opening and thrusting at the mage, who fell back across his desk, squealing in outrage and terror, his spell forgotten. Within seconds she had opened him from belly to neck, driving her sword clean through his chest to pin him to the table. She leaped up, yanking the sword free, leaving the mage gurgling in his own blood, dying. She rushed to Alaric's side again, driving the few remaining skeletons away from his back. He was bleeding from several small scratches and cuts, but made quick work of the remaining undead, blue light flashing on the walls from his sword, which flared up at each stroke.

They stood, panting, the underground silence sudden. Drisryna turned, grabbing the front of Alaric's armor, turning him to face her. Her eyes were wide with adrenaline and awe, her face splattered with the mage's blood. She almost leapt upon him, a leg curled around his waist, her hungry mouth at his lips; and he gave in for several seconds, all other thoughts lost.

Then he finally broke the kiss, awkwardly, pushing at her leg as he tried to disentangle himself. "Not now, Dree. Not...agh! What's that on your...ah, never mind, never mind..." He rubbed at his cheek and mouth with the inner surface of his vambrace, checking it for blood. He sheathed his blade, turning, looking around the room. "Take a look around, there must be some-"

Then they heard the voice, whimpering, fearful and tired. "Who's there? Who's there, oh gods..." Alaric followed it to a dim corner of the room; a door lay on the ground, fingers pushing up through a small, barred opening. Small, feminine fingers. The paladin slung his weapons, reaching down to find the edges of the door. It was simply lying on the ground, held down with heavy pieces of broken masonry; he shoved them quickly aside, heaving the door op and over. The light from his symbol, swaying back and forth, illuminated the small pit, and the huddled figure inside it, pale face streaked with dirt and tears as it turned upward to him. He reached down, the pit not deep enough for her to even have stood upright, and took her hand, pulling her up into the light. Once again he found himself being nearly tackled, the girl weeping wordlessly, clinging to him. He placed a comforting hand on her head, and looked up to see Drisryna glaring at the girl's back. He shook his head, making a placating, open-handed gesture to her, and began to lead the girl back through the tunnel, up into the light of the world.

Some food and water--and the sensation of grass under her bare feet--helped to calm the girl. They had found the chests of gold tucked into an alcove, and heaved them back up out of the catacombs. Alaric was trying to figure out the easiest way to get them back, when he glanced over at Drisryna. She was muttering, gesturing with one hand, sleeve pushed up past a long, shallow, but ragged cut in her forearm, crusted with dried blood. She paused, a look of consternation, then began again: several curt syllables, a quick slashing movement of her fingertips in the air. But nothing. She looked up to see Alaric watching, and he came over. He placed a hand on her wrist, the healing power from Torm only a moment's thought away; and her wound closed, leaving only dried blood behind. Drisryna yanked her arm away, still perturbed, and Alaric had a strong guess as to the reason.

A traveler's campsite, near the road. Night had fallen, and Alaric was shoving a fresh split of wood on the fire, nudging it across the coals with a stick. Drisyna approached, having gone off in the woods earlier to attend to some need or another. Without warning, she planted a boot on his shoulder, shoving him roughly over on his side; then dropped to her knees straddling him, pinning his arms awkwardly beneath her. He saw the dagger in her hand, the tears in her eyes. She looked younger now than she ever had, panicked and forlorn.

"It's you! It's because of you! Waela d'nilok, stupid rivvil, it's your fault! YOUR FAULT!"

He said nothing, watching her face. He already knew the cause of her state; had seen the worry and fear growing over the last several days."

"I pray every night! Just right, every word--and nothing! They're gone, they're gone, you took them! All my powers, you took them!" She was shivering, a hand gripping him by the hair, that dagger hovering overhead. "I want them back--I'll have them back--all I need to do...all I have to do..." Her lip trembled further, and she tilted her head back and let out a loud bawl of frustration and doubt."

His right arm was pinned between his torso and her thigh; his left wrist was only tucked under her shin. He slid his hand free, but only slipped it around her waist, slowly caressing her lower back. "It is Lolth--she's withholding from you."

"Because I am weak! Because of you!"

"Because you walk the surface, with a human, without anger or fear in your heart. Because you've forgotten to be afraid of her, and hate her enemies. And you should kill me, kill anyone who gets this close to you. But you don't want to." She seemed almost to deflate, dragging her sleeve across her eyes, dagger still gripped in one slender hand. He kept going. "You've already left so much behind...this is only a little bit more. You don't need her. You're strong enough to go your own way."

The whites of her eyes were ringed with red. She let go of his hair, lip curling in a sneer. "You think it is so easy. You think I should go to YOUR god. That I will come running along because I am too weak for Lolth. But you have to give up nothing!"

He lifted his hand to his face, twisting awkwardly beneath her. "There are many gods, many of them strong and honorable. I won't tell you which to follow. I wouldn't even ask you to chose one, now. All you have to do is go your own path, and you will find what you need."

"Lies! You follow your god, and I fail. You get to be the strong one, doing whatever your god asks. I am just the trophy--'look at what I tamed!'"

He spoke softly, her obvious pain an ache in his heart. "If Torm asked me to hurt you--if Torm was capable of asking me to hurt you--I would not follow him." She glared down at him suspicously. "I would not obey anyone who told me to leave you, or hurt you."

    "Because I am your pet."

    "Because I love you."

She bit her lip, eyes watering again. The very picture of a lost child. She sniffed loudly, wetly. "Love is a word of weakness. Stupid, weak, rivvil word."

"Sometimes, yes. Sometimes it makes us weak. But mostly it makes me want to see you happy, and safe. With me." He looked at the dagger in her hand. "So that makes me the weak one, here, trusting you. You could kill me in a second. But I don't think you want to."

She seemed almost to slowly keel over, eyes squeezed shut, and buried her face against his chest. He merely cradled her in his arm, stroking her hair. He murmured softly, reassuringly, and listened to the strange sound of a drow weeping.

On horseback, the pair approached the walled Keep of St. Orolan, training grounds and home of the Order of the Chalice. A huge banner flapped from the battlements, above the east gate, showing the gauntlet of Torm. Drisryna's face and hair were uncovered; and workers in the fields and couryard occasionally turned their heads to stare at Drisryna as they rode by; though more from curiosity than fear. It wasn't so rare for strange-looking people to come and go from the Keep. Alaric reached out to take her hand as they rode into the shadow of the gate. They had obtained better, well-fitted armor, and his shield was blazoned with the same symbol of the upraised gauntlet.

Grooms came forth and took their horses, and the two of them entered the inner keep's doors, passing into a long greeting-hall. After several minutes, the Marshal eppeared: a tall woman, blonde hair beginning to turn silver, a few lines forming at her eyes and mouth. She smiled warmly, clasping Alaric's hand, then embracing him. "Alaric! It's been so long! And when we heard, I was afraid you might be...ah, forget it, it''s old, bad news." She relased him, clapping her hands on his shoulders, before Drisryna could stare too many daggers into her back. Then she turned. "And you must be..."

"Marshal Kerris, this is Disryna. She's been traveling with me since leaving the Underdark."

"Ah, brave girl! Welcome!" She took the drow's hand, and gave her the same warm, if brief, embrace. Drisryna's eyes widened, glancing suspiciously at Alaric, over the Marshal's shoulder as she was clasped. "Come, you two, it's getting late--we'll have supper soon, warm food for you both." She began to lead them through the Keep, through passageways full of old memories for Alaric. "Disryna--I hope you'll forgive me if I borrow your man for a while? He's got a lot to talk about."

Alaric sat in the Marshal's office, roomy but sparsely furnished, warmed from a large fireplace behind her desk. He took a sip of wine, throat dry after so long a story."

"That's...remarkable. Implausible, I might say, if I hadn't heard it from you firsthand." Kerris grinned at Alaric. "To seduce a girl out from the middle of the drow--now that's something! We may have to add some classes to the training program." He started to protest, but she waved it aside. "Oh, all in jest, you know me too well for that. Still--I never would have guessed it. And certainly not from you. You were always such a stiff kisser back then." Alaric could only flush slightly, resisting the urge to look around for an angry red stare.

"In any event...this girl. You trust her?"

"Completely. She's...uh, she's still a bit rough around the edges at times. But it's mostly bluster, I think. She hasn't threatened to have anyone flogged in almost a month."

The Marshal's eyes glittered with amusement. "You love her?"

"...Yes." He frowned, slightly. "I admit I'm a bit concerned; I mean, for a long time now we've...uh, I've..."

Kerris let the awkward silence drag out, grinning. "You haven't taken a vow of chastity that I don't know of, have you?"

    "No."

"Well, that's not a problem. And your infatuation isn't causing you to excuse any crimes, or shirk yoru duties; far from it, from what I've seen and heard." She leaned back in her chair, stretching. "I don't think you need to feel guilty for anything you've done with her so far. Including bedding her. The only thing I would remind you of is this: we swore our lifes to help others. Not just the girl with the pretty face who shares your bed--anyone. And we can't spend our lives protecting someone, because they've become a target by associating with us. I think that's why those paladins who swear vows of chastity do so, oftimes. They feel it's safer to avoid the issue completely, to deny the temptation. But I don't see this girl leaving your side for any reason; and it appears she's well capable of handling herself. Far from the worst companion you could have on quest."

Alaric could only nod, thoughtfully. "Thank you."

A distant bell sounded, and Kerric rose, Alaric following suit. "That would be supper. Come, we'll eat with the others in the Shield Hall--there's a few others here who will want to catch up with you. And we'd best collect your lady love before she sets fire to something, eh?" Kerric paused at the door to her office, a slightly wistful look in her green eyes as she glanced back. "One more thing."

    "Yes, Marshal?"

"So you found a drow with a heart. And not black and twisted, either. Alaric...see that you don't break it."

I dunno. I never really figured out what she'd do or follow instead of Lolth. Eilistraeeeee seemed too easy. "LOL NOW I FOLLOW THAT OTHER GOD." Torm seems a bit more likely...he's the FIGHTAN GAWD.

I even thought about maybe Sune. Which gives us the opportunity for Lawful Hot Orgies. Or Chaotic Hot Orgies. Whichever.

That even assumes she's going from being Cleric-of-X to Cleric-of-Y. I dunno, maybe she just becomes a rogue or something.

I sorta assumed she was, just by default. Being daughter of a Matron, I figured she was likely trained as a priestess, as the most politically useful and powerful option. At the same time, i figured she was a novice at most. Like one level of Cleric, or whatever.

Yeah that sounds the most likely path really. Mostly because I wasn't really aware she was a cleric until later.

Actually my reasoning of Sune was her growing attraction towards him. And she then goes sorta overboard with it and turns it into a slight obsession which attracts Sune's attention a bit and the whole thing just goes on from there. Never been much into the FR pantheon but I remember Sune is somewhat related to similar things. I may be wrong of course.

Mostly because I don't relish the thought of this devolving into a fapfic. I'm sure others would love that but we get enough of it as it is anyway so it's nice to see something that at least tries to be normal.

Sune is the goddess of beauty, love and passion. This is commonly construed as her being the goddess of sluts, whores and random fucking. That reputation actually belongs to Sharess. A cleric of Sune won't necessarily be a rampaging slut, fucking everything her path, however she will be expected to be kind and encouraging to everyone, which I doubt that drow-chan can manage at this stage in her life.

Still, her going over to Sune would provide some interesting situation. More or less because of her changed demeanor if nothing else.
But your right on that point really.

Although I thought Sune also was very much about compassion and that borderline "I will never ever let you go" kind of thing. Then again I might just have confused that with someone else.

Check sup/tg/. Sandwich is the name of a drow paladin found as a baby in a basket by dwarves (after they'd killed the drow expedition which included the basket). Sandwich was so-named because her "father" won her off of the other dwarves, expecting to find a sandwich in the basket. In his words "stupid elves don't know baskets are for sandwiches."

Basically, we took the weaksauce idea of a "good paladin drow" and gave it a fun background.
