    "Farewell, little god. Have fun."
You feel much safer now, as you sense your greatest adversary turned his attention elsewhere.

It's time to reassess the situation.

    The pantheon currently consists of:
You, Hyperion, god of knowledge, protection and fire.
Your son Hagran, god of craft, skill, war and courage.
Your daughter Shyla, Hagran's wife, goddess of agriculture, fertility, nature and healing.
The divinely empowered otter, Otto, has ascended to a godhood as well, becoming a patron of tricksters, cunning and humor, especially practical jokes.

On the material plane, you completely control one island. Otto has spread your cult on five other, and you are able to contact the people of a further seven islands. The Masters' forces are demoralised by the recent events and their loyalty will soon be non-existant.

In your divine realm, the situation is worse. You managed to seal the intrusion away, but you suspect that a long-term solution is necessary. You have considered creating an army of servants, lindorms and golems. Unfortunately, your attempts at creating life were unsuccessful so far.

We don't have enough followers to need this automated yet. I doubt we will have an endless slew of the dead to take for some time. I'm sure we can take what we need manually for now
    >> Anonymous 10/09/09(Fri)17:28 No.6205142
We need our own warriors to face the infinite demons that the Abyss spawns. Given that we don't have infinite followers, we need some way to recycle our warriors so that each warrior can take down or defeat many, many demons over a span of time.

I am also worried about demons learning to influence the material world as we do, which could lead to all sorts of badness.

So, two concerns: protecting the divine realm, and protecting the physical realm. To protect the physical realm, training up devoted and pious warriors in the art of combat and whatever means we have to strengthen their minds against Horrors from Beyond sounds like a very good start. If we an integrate users of the Art into their tactics, all the better.

On the spirit-realm side, perhaps we could keep the souls and consciousnesses of our holy warriors, in order that they might continue to fight the good fight even should they be physically slain. An army of soldier-saints, as it were.

Thoughts on death: when a man dies, he soul travels to the Library. Inside, he tells the story of his life the the place's scribes, and it is written down. When a soul's stories and knowlege are sufficient to fill an entire book on the shelves of the Library, he is allowed entrance. His soul turns to divine flame is is set into a glass body, to serve his god in protection the Library and his followers and to seek knowlege for eternity inside the Library.

    Yeah, recycling is good.

At the moment the consciousnesses go back to the crystal and are effectively lost, right?

How about snagging the consciousnesses before they do that, and instead reincarnating them anew? Is it a case of a fully-aware consciousness being born into a new infant body, or is the effect subtler than that?

My thought is that perhaps by recycling these consciousnesses they might benefit from living many lives, being refined and strengthened and honed by lifetimes of experience.

If we can do this with our paladins especially, having dead paladins reborn and raised and trained as paladins over and over until they are immaculate warriors of righteousness, that could be fucking awesome.

Perhaps, one day, we might venture into the heart of the Abyss and find some way to destroy it at its source.

For now, while we build our strength and explore our world, the best we can hope for is a holding action, defeating them as swiftly as they escape. As time goes by we will learn more about them, and become more effective at fighting them.

As part of our doctrine, I think it'd be good to ensure that one of the central tenets is that of the virtue and righteousness of cooperation and collective advancement - the most righteous man is not the one who hoards knowledge to selfishly advance his own agenda, but the one who shares knowledge for the betterment of all.

As such, hopefully there'll be a cultural tendency for society to praise and reward those who discover or invent things that are particularly beneficial and helpful to those around them, thus actively encouraging scientific and technological development.

Making a race that's intelligent enough to use tools but lacks dextrous manipulatory appendages is particularly unkind.

Maybe have them progress through forms as they grow and age? Start out as wings-and-arms Lindorms, then (winged?) lizardmen, then dragons proper.

What would it take to make the changes hereditary? Or maybe set things up so that there are specially designated holy nesting sites where the Lindorms can lay their eggs, and we will bless their offspring with intelligence and the superior form.

"Generally, the word lindworm stood for the Latin word draco (whence Norse dreki), thus could refer to any draconic creature, from a real life constrictor snake to a legendary dragon. In European mythology and folklore, creatures identified as a 'lindworm' may be winged or wingless, plus quadrapedal, bipedal or limbless. However late persistent tradition designates the lindworm as having no limbs, or just front claws (so that it must slither) in contrast to wyverns that have only hind-quarters (and possible claws on the end of its wings) and in contrast to dragons which have four limbs in addition to its wings."

    This is hilarious:
The belief in the reality of a lindorm, a giant limbless serpent, persisted well into the 19th century in some parts. The Swedish folklorist Gunnar Olof Hyltén-Cavallius collected in the mid 19th century stories of legendary creatures in Sweden. He met several people in Småland, Sweden that said they had encountered giant snakes, sometimes equipped with a long mane. He gathered around 50 eyewitness reports, and in 1884 he set up a big reward for a captured specimen, dead or alive. Hyltén-Cavallius was ridiculed by Swedish scholars, and since nobody ever managed to claim the reward, it resulted in a cryptozoological defeat. Rumours about lindworms as actual animals in Småland rapidly died out (Sjögren, 1980).

So the low-grade Art-users - is this the equivalent of cantrips and such? Hedge magic? Minor healings, divinations and good luck charms?

Also, what's the situation with regard to enchanting items? Are our more talented followers able to imbue objects with the Art on their own? Is there some way to make this process easier for them?

I am thinking in the general direction of working towards a kind of industrial revolution that combines technology and the Art, with minor life-improving enchanted items being more-or-less ubiquitous. F'rexample, enchanted hearthstones that flicker with magical fire on command, growing hot enough to warm a house and cook food without need for fuel. Likewise lanterns and lightsources, boxes or charms that preserve foodstuff from decay, maybe enchanted rocks that, when placed around a field, will encourage the bountiful growth of crops within the bounded area.

If we can make our people successful and prosperous by teaching them such things, non-believers will hear about it and flock to us. Provided we make it clear that we are also strong enough to defend what is ours, we should see a pretty steady stream of people wanting to join up.

    Wingless.

Hmmm... how close we are to ballons or copters, or any other flying vehicles. Also can we bind elementals into items, or use their power to propel stuff? (Oh gee how original...)

I vote yes to wings - though perhaps they could be wingless in the first and second stages (worm and lizardman), and then be given the option to choose when they reach the age at which they'd advance to the next form? A choice between wings, for those who'd like to soar among the clouds, and powerful fins, for those who'd rather delve the oceans.

    Keep it flexible, yo.

    First stage: Serpentine with forelimbs.

    Second stage: Lizardman.

Third stage: Bigger lizardman with wings or fins.

Fourth stage: Sinuous oriental-style dragon or sea serpent. Huge and tough either way.

You could channel massive amounts of earth from the elemental plane. Are you sure you want to do this, though? It'll raise the water level.
