Sorry, I'll just wave the fallout bible about a bit for clarification.

2052 - april - The Resource Wars begin. Many smaller nations go bankrupt, and Europe,
dependent on oil imports from the Middle East, responds to the Middle East's
rising oil prices with military action. The long drawn-out war between the
European Commonwealth and the Middle East begins.

2052 - may/july - The United Nations, already suffering, begins to collapse. In a series of heated
debates, many nations withdraw from the organization as the UN tries to keep
the peace. At the end of July, the United Nations is disbanded.

2060 - The Euro-Middle Eastern War ends as the oil fields in the Middle East run
dry... there is no longer a goal in the conflict, and both sides are reduced almost
    to ruin.

2077 - FEV Research is leaked to the world through an unknown source. Protests in
many major cities and governments around the world, as well as accusations
that the US was responsible for the New Plague. FEV is seen as the threat it is,
and serves only to fuel tensions.

2077 - october 23- Great War: Bombs are launched; who struck first is unknown... and it is not
even known if the bombs came from China or America. Air raid sirens sound,
but very few people go into vaults, thinking it is a false alarm. The Vaults are
    sealed.

2080 - The first effects of the virus are seen in the survivors. Widespread mutations
occur with animals and humans alike. Those that survive the effects of the
mutations are permanently changed by the virus. New species are created
    almost overnight.

So in essence, it's not known what happens to the rest of the world, except for china and usa. The middle east and europe are both basically splintered and fractured beyond recognition, economically broken and probably hit by not a very small amount of nukes.

Drawing upon various nuclear warhead simulators on the net, I can summarise that Stockholm has a high probability of being hit. I therefore conclude that my chances of survival are very slim. If I made it to one of the VERY few bunkers capable of withstanding nuclear attack, then maybe. Life would be hell here in sweden.

The Enclave are made up exclusively of the descendents of the government and military officers. Unless you're born into it, you're extremely unlikely to ever get anything but shot by them.

They even massacre vault dwellers for basically no reason.

You might be able to hook up with one of the smaller Enclave off-shoots who actually want to rebuild the country. Even then you're still a target for the real enclave.

You'd be better off with the Brotherhood if you don't want a bullet in the head while you're asleep.

2059 - The Anchorage Front Line is established, as the United States increases its
military presence in Alaska to protect its oil interests. The Anchorage Front
Line causes tensions in the United States and Canada, as the United States
attempts to pressure Canada into allowing American military units to guard the
    Alaskan pipeline.

2066 - winter- As a sign of increasing tension between the two countries, Canada proves
reluctant to allow American troops on Canadian soil or allow American planes
to fly over Canadian airspace. The United States and Canadian tensions rise,
but Canada eventually backs down, and US troops pass through Canada. This
sets the stage for the Canadian annexation in 2076.

2069 - Canada begins to feel the pressure from the United States military as the US
draws upon Canadian resources for the war effort. Vast stretches of timberland
are destroyed, and other resources in Canada are stretched to the breaking
point. Many Americans refer to Canada as Little America, and Canadian
    protests are unheard.

2072 - The United States' increasing demand for Canadian resources causes protests
and riots in several Canadian cities. An attempted sabotage attempt of the
Alaskan pipeline is all the military needs as an excuse to begin its annexation
of Canada... which in fact, had already begun in 2067

2076 -january- The United States annexation of Canada is complete. Canadian protestors and
rioters are shot on sight, and the Alaskan Pipeline swarms with American
military units. Pictures of atrocities make their way to the United States,
    causing further unrest and protests.

It's safe to assume that every major city and most of the states received atleast one nuke each. Even though Jersey is never specifically mentioned, it's safe to assume that the repercussions of the bombardment would be just as bad as for the rest of the USA. It's quite possible that both your house AND the local farm made it intact, depending on your proximity to the nearest big city, but keep in mind that the radiation would be extreme in several areas in the first 10-15 years, and then you'd have to beware of the radiated winds that swept the lands, not to mention radiated or even acid rain and thunderstorms without equal.

True. But the walls would most certainly burst and the water pumps would most probably die, think of all the broken equipment in fallout 1.

And you have to realise just how deep down below sea level New Orleans really is.
    taken from a newspaper:
"They don't bury the dead in New Orleans. The highest point in the city is only 6 ft. above sea level, which makes for watery graves. Fearful that rotting corpses caused epidemics, the city limited ground burials in 1830. Mausoleums built on soggy cemetery grounds became the final resting place for generations. Beyond providing a macabre tourist attraction, these "cities of the dead" serve as a reminder of the Big Easy's vulnerability to flooding. The reason water rushes into graves is because New Orleans sits atop a delta made of unconsolidated material that has washed down the Mississippi River.... /snipp/

...During a strong hurricane, the city could be inundated with water blocking all streets in and out for days, leaving people stranded without electricity and access to clean drinking water. Many also could die because the city has few buildings that could withstand the sustained 96- to 100-mph winds and 6- to 8-ft. storm surges of a Category 2 hurricane. Moving to higher elevations would be just as dangerous as staying on low ground. Had Camille, a Category 5 storm, made landfall at New Orleans, instead of losing her punch before arriving, her winds would have blown twice as hard and her storm surge would have been three times as high."

Short answer: They started fighting before nuclear power was used in the way it was just before the nukes.

    Long answer:

2051 - Seeking to protect business interests and their oil supply, the United States
begins to exert increasing pressure on Mexico, citing the political instability
and pollution stemming from Mexico as a threat to the United States. Various
economic sanctions serve to destabilize Mexico, and the United States military
enters Mexico to keep the oil refineries running and making sure oil and fuel
continue to make their way north across the border... at Mexico's expense

2052 - A television documentary into the withered husk of the Texas oil fields brings
the oil shortage into the American households, and reveals how deep the
    energy crisis runs.

2060 - Traffic on the streets of the world stops moving. Fuel becomes too precious to
waste on automobiles, so alternatives are explored - electric and fusion cars
begin to be manufactured, but factories can only make limited amounts.
    Pressure on fusion research increases.

2060 - The Euro-Middle Eastern War ends as the oil fields in the Middle East run
dry... there is no longer a goal in the conflict, and both sides are reduced almost
    to ruin.

2065 - june - Due to enormous demands for electricity in the summer of 2065, a nuclear
reactor in New York City almost goes critical. The near meltdown brings into
effect power rationing, and the term "Hot Summer" is used to refer to the New
    York incident.

    -cont

2066 - spring - As the oil resources dry up across the globe, China's fossil fuel dependency
causes an energy crisis in the nation. China, bordering on collapse, becomes
more aggressive in its trade talks with the United States. Unwilling to export
oil to China, talks between the United States and China break down.

2066 - summer - Adding further insult to the Chinese-American relations, the first crude fusion
cell is unveiled, one of the results of the Power Armor project. Devices
designed for the fusion cell begin to be manufactured. Incorporating fusion
power into the general US infrastructure begins, but the process is too slow to
supply power to the regions that need it. Nearly thirteen years later, few
sections of the United States were supplied with fusion power.

2070 - The first of the Chryslus motors fusion-driven cars are developed. Reassuringly
big and American, the limited models carry a hefty price tag but are sold out
within days. Many Chryslus plants have long since been converted into making
    military ordinance.

2076 - august - Food and energy riots begin in major cities throughout the United States.
Military units begin to be deployed in cities within the United States to contain
rioters, and many temporary jails are constructed. A state of emergency is
declared, and martial law soon follows.

You can regard parts of Fallout Tactics as canon,(like the brotherhood being huge dicks and the existence of a cult that worshiped an undetonated nuke) but there is a shitton of inconsistencies like the fact that there are FUEL BARRELS in the game, and the Brotherhood of Steel coming from a military vault.

    Fallout: BoS is non-canon, period.

both of these had sequels, both of which were canceled, the sequel to Tactics actually showing some promise

FoS Outcast, raiding stuff, making raiders piss in their pants, finding all sorts of lost tech and using it to become more efficent at doing all the above? Where do I sign up.

BTW: This powerarmor recycles human waste right...

I'd probably be dead. I'm not important enough to go to a Vault.

Either that or I would become a feral ghoul. God knows I lack the sophisticated mind to remain human.

they.......did, they were inside the mariposa underground base during the great war, it was not literaly a real vault, but was enough protection from the bombs

But then again, why would you actually WANT to go to one of the vaults, knowing what we do now about them?

Besides a scarce few control vaults, the vast majority of the vault tec vaults weren't actually designed to save anyone. I can think of a few better places to be in than a cramped unwilling social experiment, even counting the bombs.

    >Exactly, but because of that everyone new to the series would see them as bad guys, when in fact all they're trying to do it save the wasteland from itself by keeping technology out of children's hands.

2065 - August - The need for increased mobility in US Army Mechanized Cavalry units, leads the military research companies to focus their research to create a man based tank - the Power Armor.

2065/67 - Power Armor research grows and several prototypes are developed, many of which prove to be unworkable in the field. These prototypes pave the way for future advances in military, construction, and fusion technology.

2066 - summer - 2066, Summer: The first crude fusion cell is unveiled, one of the results of the Power Armor project.

2067 - The first suit of T-45d Power Armor is deployed in Alaska during the Anchorage Reclamation. While lacking the full mobility of future versions, this Power Armor is incredibly effective against Chinese tanks and infantry. Its ability to carry heavy ordinance becomes key in various localized conflicts, and it has the power to destroy entire towns without endangering the wearer. China rushes to create its own versions, but they are many years behind the United States.

2074 - Contrary to their claims of seeking only to retake Alaska from the Reds, American Power Armor units, infantry, and mechanized divisions are deployed to China, but they become bogged down on the mainland, putting a further drain on American resources and supply lines.

2076 -June- T-51b Power Armor prototype is completed. This is the pinnacle of Power Armor technology before the Great War. Many of these units are sent to China, and they begin to carve a swath through the Chinese forces.

This isn't actually The Brotherhood's mission, it's to find and preserve man's knowledge so that it isn't lost forever.

2077 -January 22- The first domestic use of Power Armor within the United States for crowd and quarantine control. Units originally serving in China and the Anchorage Front Line find themselves fighting Americans at home.

2198 - Enclave works on various new technologies, including Power Armor variations. None of these are much of an improvement over the conventional old school Power Armor, and some are actually worse.

2215 - Under Presidential Order, Enclave scientists begin to work on an upgraded version of Power Armor. Many prototypes are developed and tested.

2220 -October- Enclave scientists develop a reliable version of the Advanced Power Armor. The prototype results (and accidents/explosions/deaths) are classified by order of the President Richardson for the sake of morale.

So basically, from the original two games we have:
    T-51b (Both games)
    T-51b Hardened (Both games)
    Advanced Power armor (Fo2)
Advanced Power armor mk 2. (Fo2)

In fallout 3 everyone and their mother (except for the envlace) is apparently walking around in the T-45d.
The enclave is apparently walking around in some seriously UGLY advanced power armor, with some spin-off's. (Tesla, hellfire)

In tactics we find another version, the 'Power armor' and it's counter part 'Advanced Power armor'. They're both very very fucking advanced. Inconsistent due to the fact that the brotherhood didn't have the facilities nor the resources to produce their own power armor, let alone improve upon it. Presonally I don't consider it cannon.

The east coast brotherhood was cut off from the west coast so they had to make due with their existing supplies and what they could scavenge, they found a bunch of old t-45d suits in the pentagon and started using those when their t-51bs broke down. Enclave armor is supposed to be the same armor they had in F2 as a couple of people refer to it as advanced MK2. Fallout Tactics is not canon so don't even try to make sense of how the PA in that fits in with everything else.

The Outcasts are a little extreme though.
Old Brotherhood never went around insulting everything and everyone that wasn't them and disregarding completely any sort of empathy. In Fallout 1, BoS sees the Super Mutants as a threat and decides to help the Vault Dweller with it. In 3, there's the same problem, but they don't seem to give a hoopla about it.
Then they're all hypocrites about the way they act. "Damn local... oh wait, we need you to gather some tech for us/you have a Pip-squeak 2000! Come play this computer simulation for us!"
Least I got the chance to throw it at their face in OA, and received a much appreciated apology.

    >there's the same problem, but they don't seem to give a hoopla about it.
Mostly because DC wasn't somplace that was meant to be become a permanent base of operations. It was just a temporary thing. It didn't even start to get settled in earnest until the Brotherhood showed up and started to cull the mutants. Lyons saw this and probably figured "if people are going to live here then we can protect them". Casdin saw this and figured "Those people are dumbasses for settling down in a mutant-infested warzone". Ultimately just two different ideals.

They don't care because there were no communities before they started to clean house. Maybe just smatterings of humans here and there but nothing approaching the settlements of Rivet City and Megaton.
