Starting a 3.5 campaign in a few weeks and am writing up everything now. Everyone playing is a hard Legend of Zelda fan, mainly Link to the Past, OoT, and MM, so Im drawing heavily from these, but with enough twist to where if you were paying really good attention, you would have an "i see what you did there moment." What Im asking from tg is for any ideas or input you can think of.

Pic related is kinda what im shooting for, but Zelda instead of pokemon

For an example, pic related (Bongo Bongo) would be some undead creature (thinking wheep from LM) who was traitor to {insert Shiekian race substitute here} during a great civil war hundreds of years ago, tortured and chained up and cursed with unlife in a complex you can reach through the towns well. When PCs find him, screaming madly, he'll tear himself from the wall, loosing his hands and head in the process, to attack them

Im talking about using the obscure characters and backgrounds of the games though, the kind you see most of those ridiculous writings on the symbolic meanings and deepness and things. The example I made with bongo bongo is what im going for, not "HALF EARTH ELEMENTAL DWARFS DELICIOUS ALCOHOL HORDED BY RED DRAGON, ARE YOU A BAD ENOUGH DUDE TO HELP THEM OUT?", despite that sounding awesome even as I write it

If the party has a bard, have them come across a musician who can't for the life of him find a song that makes him happy and asks the bard for some inspiration.

Later, they come across the same musicican, who has never stopped playing that one song, and it has driven him mad.

This I may use later on. One thing Im also employing is Titans in a greek mythology sense. All gods have left, the temples hold enough to gain divine spells from, but titans are the only actual divine beings. Gods had kind of a clockmaker feel, created the world and left. Titans want to improve on it, leading to later on epic titan battles.

Actually, the Happy Mask Salesman might make a good BBEG. Maybe the PCs notice that all of the stornger evil characters are all wearing some kind of mask, and it's revealed at the end that the Happy Mask Salesman has been corrupting them/mind controlling them with the masks.

If you can find the orchestrated music, PLAY IT. Seriously, I normally hate videogame music with pretentious passion, but I love the quality of the orchestrated version of OoT's music.

Song of Storms if you want to get creepy, the Water Temple song for mysterious settings, etc. However, don't JUST play Zelda music, use a lot of ambient stuff as well. Save the references for special occasions.

Important themes in LoZ games that you can incorporate into RPGs in general:
1.) Use the sudden appearance of fairies to prevent a TPK if you ever come close to one.
2.) Explosives are common in the game world. In fact, there are shops that sell nothing but explosives. LOTS of explosives.
3.) Animal husbandry is very culturally important. Livestock rearing is the central occupation for most of the population, especially poultry, and people who possess a horse are automatically considered "successful." It is a sign of wealth and power. Also, in some areas the intentional killing of livestock is a crime punishable by being buried in soil up to your neck in a pen of whatever you killed and left to die.

Give a nice long buildup, mystery style, toward finding a plot-necessary item. Have the Item be found beneath an innocuous structure in the settings main town, say the weathervane, maybe?
    >> Anonymous 10/01/09(Thu)22:31 No.6094530
    >>6094421
4.) Music is socially-important as a democratic art medium, and most musicians will never go hungry if there is any available food to spare for a song. It is woven into the fabric of the civilization, and everyone knows at least a few songs which hold religious, symbolic, or cultural importance. Sculpture and the visual arts are for the rich, but music is for everybody.
5.) The ruins of elder civilizations are everywhere and are so ubiquitous that most people actually don't really pay attention to them. Shepherds can be seen having lunch on giant symbol-carved stones, new homes are built using the engraved facades of old temples as decorative elements, and almost no one knows or really even cares about where they came from - they have more important things to worry about. The few scholars which study them all have competing theories about what they all mean, but the truth is lost. All that's left is supposition and superstition.

6.) The game's medium of trade is pretty much only used by the most successful merchants, agents of royalty, and adventurers due to its general rarity. While everyone else will HAPPILY accept payment in it to get their hands on some, the lack of available currency to the general public means most "commoners" get what they need through barter and trade. (Just in case you want to throw in one of those classic "I'll trade this pineapple for that can of dog food, which you can trade with Jim for a puppet..." sort of chains.)

    >It is woven into the fabric of the civilization, and everyone knows at least a few songs which hold religious, symbolic, or cultural importance.

APPLICATION: Everyone knows a catchy little song that superstition says you can hum/whistle to help protect yourself from the predations of the restless dead. Parents teach it to their children at a young age, and it serves as a sort of ubiquitous nursery rhyme to everyone along the lines of "Ring Around the Rosey." It doesn't work, of course... unless it's played on certain special instruments...

7.) Races are generally extremely xenophobic and isolationist - so much so that, to the dominant race, the existence of "others" is considered somewhat along the medieval view of the Fae. The common understanding of what another intelligent species is tends to be superstitious, fearful/avoidant, and often dead wrong. If you plan on using the classic LoZ races, incorporate stuff like "Gorons cause tremors of the earth when they get angry" and "if you see a Zora, hide your children or they'll steal them."

This also applies to other societies of the major race, but less-so - they're distorted, like the stereotypical views of Gypsies, but don't descend into the realm of the mythological.

8.) The undead are common, but for the most part rather weak. They're just enough of a general problem that your average commoner would rather pay someone to haul goods to the next town instead of doing it himself, and the vast majority of people live behind stone walls and city guards, but there are also... other alternatives. Every shepherd or farmer knows someone who had a skeleton rise up in his garden, or a poltergeist hurling pots in the house, and either took care of it themselves or hired the local ghost-hunter to solve the problem.

10.) Not even the soldiers of the king will willingly go into the desert. If the sand doesn't come alive and eat you, or the various deadly creatures of the area surface under you and drag you screaming to your death, there's still exposure and the constant threat of being buried alive in a sudden whirlpool of "shifting sands."

It's no wonder thieves use it as a base of operations...

11.) Magic is viewed with extreme suspicion, bordering on paranoia. Those who wield magics unaided are seen as usurping on the realm of the gods, and the vast majority of superstitions regarding the fall of the old precursor civilizations is that they abused their magical powers so much it angered the creators of the world and caused them to initiate a cataclysm.

Alchemy, in contrast, is seen as a legitimate science of healing... and if a magical ability is granted because of some ancient relic, probably passed down from the gods themselves... well, that's more religion than blasphemy, really - though you still shouldn't be expecting to take your magic fire crystal into the home of your average commoner if they know you have it. There's no reason to go taking THAT risk.

Well, why not use both at the same time? They could be in competition for the same space, or cooperating, or maybe even the leaders of the thieves could be undead. After all, who KNOWS what on earth is underneath all those robes and masks and coverings... If it was enough to hide a princess, it's enough to hide almost anything.

12.) The boundaries between planar "worlds" are very weak, and it's possible to accidentally or intentionally "cross over" between them. Commoners whisper stories of poor unfortunates who somehow stumbled into the "dark" or "shadow" or "spirit" worlds, crossing what any other day would be a normal threshold or turning what any other day would be a typical corner on their way to the market... and finding themselves in a twisted parody of existence.

Most make it back... eventually... but few ever make it back completely unchanged.

it's an ancient tradition, wearing masks during certain ceremonies. They evoke spirits, gods, and elementals, but sometimes they work too well.

more then one masked monster has torn up the countryside, slain and found to be a mutated mortal within.

on the other hand, some gods are willingly channeled by mortals, and some are chosen to enter service and be worn by the god for as long as the mortal shell holds. of course, not every mortal is suitable, and not every suitable mortal is willing...

    >With shadow realm though, having never finished twilight princess, I dont wanna get too deep with a shadow realm bit, other stuff is great though

Sorry if I didn't make it clear - the peasants don't exactly have a taxonomy regarding "if you see, this it's the shadow realm instead of the dark world." To them, it's either all one place or one of a countless series of infinite parallel worlds. They just CALL it some variation on that.

Hell, my suggestion? Invent your own parallel dimension that the PCs stumble into. The only real general "themes" shared between the various game alternate worlds is that:

A - Going in there will probably mutate you unless you have some magical precaution, and if you're LUCKY you'll transform back once you get back to the "real" world.
B - Mysterious (often dark) powers rule the alternate world, and you don't really want to face them head-on.

maybe a step further - humans don't see other races as intelligent. not out of prejudice, but they just can't grasp the idea that something so freakish (to them) can be sentient.

the other races long ago gave up on trying to make humans understand, and settle for maintaining myths that keep humans from mucking with their stuff.

    >it's an ancient tradition, wearing masks during certain ceremonies.

DERIVATION: Superstition says that "the clothes make the man." Literally. Traditional legends tell of heroes clad in "hero's garb" fighting off powerful dangers, and it's always left up to the listener to decide if being dressed in said garb actually made any difference. To the average person, it's simply a foregone conclusion. Shopkeepers all dress in variations of the same clothing style, said to have once been worn by a merchant of unbelievable wealth and influence. Each city or castle guard uniform is derived from stories of the past, of some noble soul from within the ranks who performed great deeds while wearing a similar outfit.

People who dress differently from their "roles" are seen as strange, foolish, or proud - as apparently they choose not to receive the help that "dressing the part" should give them.

knowing the power of music, a group of ancient bards wrote the music into the very landscape.

there are rock formations, rivers, canyons, all carefully carved so that wind and water plays an eternal melody upon them.

Boomerangs are a bit obvious, but maybe every shepherd keeps a trusty slingshot on their belt to drive away things that would bother/endanger their flock?

13.) Glass is RARE. Windows are covered in linen mosquito netting instead of glass panes in all but the richest houses, the stained glass windows in the royal palace are considered a wonder of the civilized world, and (of course) it's damn hard to find a bottle anywhere. Most places rely on clay pots or wooden barrels for their liquid storage, though the pots are actually more fragile than glass in general... and thus not nearly as easy to carry around.

OH! In case anyone gets curious about what exactly is IN those handy red potions, and decides to go about trying to make their own...

They're mostly made of bugs. Alchemists spend ages out in the "safer" fields around cities, searching for the right rare insects to grind in with a few special "activating" herbs to make their potions. They try to keep it a secret as much as possible, both because it's hard to make a living selling bug-juice (no matter WHAT it does) and because the bugs are getting harder and harder to find as the cocktail's recipe becomes more widespread...

    >Lets talk specifics though. Id like to work in bosses and such, but subtly.

Going down the list of games... first, the original LoZ:
Aquamentus - It's a horned dragon that breathes fire. Can be included as-is.
Dodongo - Hm. This one's tough. Bomb-eating triceratops is a bit of a stretch to include. I'll come back to it in later games to see if I come up with anything better.
Manhandla - Big, monstrous venus fly trap with multiple heads. Again, can be pretty much included as-is.
Gleeok - Multi-headed hydra. Can be included as-is.
Digdogger - No clue how to make this guy work, honestly.
Gohma - GIANT ENEMY CRAB, and you can strike the weak spot for MASSIVE DAMAGE. Can be included as-is, if you work for Sony. Myself, I'd go the route of the later games and make it more insectoid.
    >> Anonymous 10/02/09(Fri)00:40 No.6096232
    >>6096163
    Now, for Adventures of Link:
Horsehead - Let's face it, this is a minotaur. Can be included as-is.
Helmethead - Animated suit of armor. Can be included as-is.
Ironknuckle - Literally just a knight. Can be included as-is.
    Carock - It's a wizard. Can be included as-is.
Gooma - Almost, but not quite, an evil Goron. You could also make it a classic cyclops or a demi-titan. Big strong muscle-dude with a ball and chain.
Barba - Serpentine dragon that lives in lava. Can be included as-is.
    Thunderbird - It's a thunderbird. Can be included as-is.
Shadow Self - A "mirror party" is always a fun battle, but beware that it has the capacity to easily turn VERY deadly if you exactly duplicate the power levels of the party itself. It can be treated as an illusion, dark magics, a curse, pretty much anything.
    >> Anonymous 10/02/09(Fri)00:58 No.6096446
    >>6096232
    Link to the Past:
Ball and Chain Trooper - Knight with a ball and chain. Can be included as-is.
Armos Knights - A cadre of heavily-armored soldiers in demonic-looking armor. Could be from an enemy kingdom, or enchanted magic suits of armor. Not too difficult to rationalize.
Lanmolas - SANDWORMS! A good way to make the desert a bad place to be stuck in. Can be included as-is, frankly, or modified in any way that makes them still be sandworms. Take a cue from "Tremors," perhaps?
Moldorm - Giant slug, or worm, or eel... any of those would be options.
Agahnim - It's an evil wizard. Can be included as-is.
Helmasaur - Treat it like an Oliphaunt, maybe? Living siege weaponry from a distant land, armored to protect its vitals and used to crush ground troops. Essentially it's an armored ankylosaurus, so it could easily fall into the same "big lizards" category as dragons. Just without breath weapons.
Arrghus - Giant floating monster jellyfish, surrounded by its young. I would NOT take this out of the water, but making it the game equivalent to a sea monster isn't a bad plan. Having to fight lots of "mini-monster" minions while the main creature is putting tentacles around a ship the PCs are on makes for a good dramatic scene, too.
Mothula - Giant monstrous moth. Go the "mothman" route with this one, make it a strange, quasi-mythological cryptid only seen at night. Even better if you make this one NOT a villain, but instead a misunderstood sentient.

    More LttP:
Blind - Uhhh... a monster in a sheet that throws off its own heads. I really don't know what to do with that one.
Kholdstare - Monstrous eyeball, encased in ice. Could be used as a monstrous floating magic eye, "beholder" style, but with a cone of cold weapon that freezes people instead of a petrification beam? I dunno. I personally wouldn't use this one.
Vitreous - Giant, intelligent, malevolent amoeboid blob-thing. Good as-is, really. Great if revealed as the "brains" behind some sort of dark plot in a city, hiding in the sewer.
Trinexx - Three-headed rock lizard with powers over fire and ice. Get rid of the elemental powers, and just have it be a communal "nest" of predatory snakes that lives in rock piles. Because their tails are never seen, superstition says they're all one creature with multiple heads. Not everything needs to be what it first appears to be, after all.

    Now for Link's Awakening:
Genie - It's a genie. Good bit of desert flavor. Make it essentially an efreet, a malevolent magic spirit of fire, and there you go. Especially since the genie in the game uses a bottle instead of a lamp.
Slime Eyes - Somewhere between Kholdstare and Vitreous. Use what I've already suggested for them.
Angler - Monstrous-sized angler fish. Can be used as-is.
Slime Eel - Can be treated basically the same as Moldorm.
Facade - A poltergeist, or a temple magically-enchanted to be self-aware and attempting to protect itself. I prefer the latter as an option.
Evil Eagle - It's a big bird. Can be included as-is.
Hot Head - Sentient fire spirit living in fire. Combine with the Genie, really, or just make it an elemental of some sort.
The Nightmare - We're basically back to shadow-clones again. Illusion magic, or an ACTUAL nightmare that the PCs fight in their dreams, or just a shape-shifter. Whatever.

    Ocarina of Time:
Queen Gohma - Big, monstrous insect queen. Really, just use PC-sized ants, or wasps, or termites, or anything really as long as they fight the queen of the nest at some point.
King Dodongo - A giant lizard that eats anything, which you feed bombs. I still think this is superfluous. You can't feed it bombs without making an OBVIOUS reference that'll break subtlety, and if you don't do that it's just a big lizard best served by the earlier dragon types.
Barinade - Really, it's the same as the Arrghus. Treat it that way.
Phantom Ganon - Ghost knight on a horse. Can be used as-is.
    Volvagia - Same as Barba.
Morpha - Combine with Vitreous. Concept is basically the same... it's a giant amoeba.
    Bongo Bongo - Already discussed.
Twinrova - Evil witches. Can be included as-is.

well, a lot of ideas don't really need much alteration to make for good encounters... that's kinda proof they're good idea by themselves. Not everything needs huge redesigns.

    Majora's Mask:
Dinofol - Dragon knights. Awesome as-is. It's entirely possible from just the boss enemies and Lizalfos to extrapolate a militant lizard race which seeks conquest. Maybe they ride Helmasaurs into battle?
Gekko - Monstrous frog. Can be used as-is.
Odolwa - Pick a Polynesian/jungle tribe stereotype. Could be a cannibal tribe if you wanted to make enemies, or a peaceful forest people if you want friends. The mask almost certainly serves a ritual purpose. Refer back to earlier in the thread?
    Wizrobe - Evil wizard. Done.
Goht - Mechanical bull-creature made by a mad steampunk scientist run amok, or a bull with a human face that is legendary in the cultural lore for... something. Again, could be anything you wanted there. Friend or enemy.

Not that I don't agree with parts of that, but seriously, half of that shit is "just use the thing from Zelda". That isn't what the OP asked for, and his players (being die-hard fans of LoZ) will notice right off the bat what he's doing.

To be blunt? He's doing it wrong.

So let them notice. if they're really good fans, they'll appreciate the homage, and if they're not metagaming fuckwits, they won't use knowing how to beat them in the videogame to break the encounter.

    >Man, you're really creative.

I'm not writing his plot, and I don't know his world other than that it's LoZ-inspired. As a result, I'm trying mostly to just distill the bosses down to their most genericized form so they can be used as a "shout-out" without being an obvious rip-off. Where they can be genericized, they can be used wherever they're called for ingame without my having to know about the plot and world design. Where they aren't, I'm making an attempt to refurbish them in a way that'll make them more usable while still retaining their base characteristics.

I recognize that I'm not writing some giant background on each of them, but that keeps them flexible. Need a big monster enemy in the desert? Grab an Aquamentus, or go with Lanmolas, or...

I don't want to write the dude's story for him, so this gives him plenty of ways to write WHY the thing is there if he decides to include it someplace.
    >> Anonymous 10/02/09(Fri)01:38 No.6096948
    >>6096882

No, DON'T "let them notice." If they're really good fans, they'll say "You stole that from Zelda." The OP didn't ask for someone to say "These are Zelda monsters that you can put in a D&D game without changing them at all." The OP could have done all of that himself.

"Hm. Stalfos ... oh, I'll just use a skeleton's stats."

That's not what he wants. Any retards can say skeleton = skeleton. He was asking for people to help him with lore and subtle ways of going about sneaking Zelda things into the game.

    >To be blunt? He's doing it wrong.

Except that "a dragon" or "a hydra" or "an evil wizard" are such fundamental fantasy tropes that they don't need any alteration to have it be completely questionable whether or not they are, in fact, a shout-out to LoZ. A ghostly horseman can be from anything, as can sandworms, as can giant slugs. Where it NEEDS greater expansion to be justified as more than just "oh, here's a Zelda boss" then I am trying to include it. Where it doesn't, I'm trying to avoid writing the dude's backstory for him so he can do what he wants with it.

But I tell you what - I'm drawing all my references from http://www.zeldadungeon.net/ to write this stuff out... and this guy is right, in that a lot of this stuff is superfluous to categorize just to say that it'd work in any fantasy world. So unless the OP wants me to continue, I'll just post the link and call it quits on the listing.

Op here. to>>6096925, thanks for all the input with that.

To the other people criticizing him, while sure he didnt give a big backstory to it, generalizing what they are and how I could use them really does help if I havent actually played that particular game. I did specifically ask the players what kind of games and things they like, so Im not gonna get negative feedback unless I have them literally doing Links job. This would be 1st time Im DMing, and while Im terrible at building a setting from the ground up, with a base, generalized, I can make a lot off of one.

The link should do, and youve already covered the games Im mainly including. I can work in the fluffy bits more as I go along, and since threads archived I can always look back on anything. If anyone who doesnt like the simplifying of the bosses down to something easy to work with and want to think up more elaborate fluff for them, be my guest, Ive already gotten alot more than I expected, but anything helps out

Deep in the bare stone of the mountain passes live the Scaled Ones. Ancestral enemies to the [whatever Goron equivalent you include], they roam the outside of the stone wastes... preying on any who dare exit the mountainhomes or enter their territory from afar.

Normally they are just a distant threat, dangerous only if on their lands - for they fight each other over tribal conflicts as much as they fight others, preventing them from presenting a unified front. But every now and again, a leader rises up from within their midst... one strong enough to start conquering opposing tribes and adding their forces to his own. These rare times are portents of doom for the surrounding kingdoms, for once the Scaled Ones no longer fight one another they turn outwards... and march in conquest, leaving only burnt rubble and bodies in their wake.
