Private Shuck poked absentmindedly at his dataslate, his boots up on his rickety desk. Dust danced in the golden afternoon light. Across town, a steam whistle sounded the shift change at the mine. Shuck smiled and set down the slate. He folded his hands behind his head and let his mind wander.

In his mind's eye, he saw the girl. Long, white hair. Midnight blue dress, a little ragged from long wear. Long sleeves with the tips of her fingers just peeking out, as if her hands were afraid of the light. Standing waist-deep in a silvery sea of fish. He frowned.

*I'm not bothering you, am I?* Her voice in his head.

He concentrated, replied. *No, no, it's fine. Mare? Why are there fish?*

*Fish are difficult to stop thinking about, once you've thought of them. I'm sorry. I can go away if it bothers you.*

*It's fine, Mare. Really, I'm bored out of my skull. I finished the reports hours ago. The Lieutenant can barely read, so he'll gladly give me all day to do them as long as he doesn't have to. I've just been sitting here waiting for you.*

    *You were waiting for me?*
    >> Anonymous 09/08/09(Tue)22:27 No.5782543
*Yeah. You know, you've really gotten better at this. You're not blurry or echoy at all.*

    *We're closer now. It's easier.*

*Yeah, it's good to be back in town. Working at the Fortress was boring. But... sorry, Mare, I'm not gonna be able to make it tonight.*

    *Why?*

*Card tournament tonight in the barracks, so I...*

    *You want to gamble instead?*

*Lemme finish! There's a card tournament tonight, and since I cleaned everyone out last time, somehow the duty roster got changed and I'm on watch. I'm gonna be up the water tower staring at the horizon until two in the morning. If any of the bastards had asked me, I woulda told them I was planning on taking leave that shift. Sorry, Mare, next time I'll...*

*The water tower above shaft three?*

    *Yeah, but...*

    *Okay.*

He was back in the dusty office. His legs had fallen asleep.

"Mare? Mare, you still with me?" He muttered to himself and tried to focus, but she was gone.

    *********

Shuck leaned over the handrail. Below him, a dark shape was climbing the ladder. He saw her face, pale in the starlight, as she glanced up. He waved. She turned back to the ladder and continued slowly upward.

A few minutes later, he leaned over the edge and offered her a hand. She shrank back.

"It's fine, Mare. I'm wearing gloves. No touching, no... flashes, right?" A slender hand emerged from its sleeve and reached toward him. He pulled her up with a grunt.

They sat together at the edge of the platform, legs dangling in the dark. She took her satchel off her shoulder and, without looking at him, pushed it across the gap between them until it bumped into his leg.

"What's this, Mare?" He opened the oilcloth bag. Fragrant steam spilled out, smelling of meat and strange herbs.

"I said I would make you dinner. So I did."

    "Smells good. What's in it?"

    "Plants. And animals."

"Uh. Right." He pulled out a dumpling wrapped in a leaf and bit into it. "Good stuff. Come on, slide over here and have some."

"Okay." She inched toward him in the dark.

They ate for a while in silence. The night cooled, and he handed her his coat. She wrapped it around herself and huddled deep into its folds.

He lay back on the steel deck. "Stars are nice tonight."

    "No."

    "Hmm?"

She mumbled, barely audible. "They look different to me, I think."

He sat up and leaned toward her, trying to glimpse her face in the shadows. Her eyes glittered.

    "Different? How?"

"Like... like the sky is black silk, and I can see things moving behind it, pushing against it. Wicked. Hungry."

He wrapped an arm around her shoulders. He felt her shift, deep inside the coat. Just slightly, she leaned against him.

Shuck and Mare will defy the Daemons of the Warp, AND any Imperial Inquisitors that would try to keep them apart! For they hold the strongest bond of all, the bond of love!

I say bring on all the horrors the universe has to offer! LET THEM COME! Shuck and Mare will defeat them all, and show everyone that even in the grim dark of the 41st Century, THERE IS STILL LIGHT!

Well, if the OP's still around and up to it, it'd be nice if he could make this into a huge writing project.

If not, I've already got a couple ideas for stories around these two buzzing around in my head. I suppose I could take a crack at it, make it into an epic story reminiscent of the "/tg/ and /x/" story I wrote a while back...

Whaddya say OP, you up for a story that'll shake the very foundations of the 40K verse?

40K can be anything you want it to be. You want your stories where a Commissar leads four year olds against Dark Eldar and blams one of them for crying, so be it. But 40K can be many other things. It can be a love story or comedy or adventure, so long as you want it to be because it has such a large universe with so many things happening with in. Furthermore, the Imperials are humans, and I think some core values such as the need to be loved and give love exist, unless they really aren't humans. Its just bad writing when you portray everyone as the same axecrazed maniac. And yes, I'm accusing GW of bad writing.

I find the state of the Imperium, nay the whole galaxy, horrendous. To see brother turned against brother and father against son, to see neighbor tear at neighbor for little or nothing. We fight eternally and yet gain nothing. Is there nothing of worth left amongst the stars? Or are we doomed to struggle, termites building their mounds just to smash them asunder again and again?
I stand and watch my brethren: my colleagues, my allies, my friends. What do I see? I see good men burned at the stake because a Puritan takes offense to new trains of thought. I see the blood of innocent men and women spilt to fuel the execesses of a decadent and terrifying nobility. I see the stars themselves ready to blink out under the pressure of a war that will never end so long as man and xeno last.
And yet I continue. I continue to see a day when a man might come home from war and not have to return. I continue to see a time where the Inquisition is unnecessary, a time where ideas flow freely and knowledge is cherished for what it is. I continue to see the Golden Age of Man returned, where we need not fear what lurks in the dark. But alas, I fear I will not live to see such a time and, even more greatly, fear it will not come...

    >Why would you defend chaos?

Because this is not chaos. Chaos is not capable of love, only destruction and corruption. Love brings people together, Chaos seeks to tear them apart.

That is why Chaos wishes to devour these two, and why I will defend them with my life.

I have no intentions of attempting to make them join the Greater Good. Love is a universal force for the greater good, and all creatures - whether they be human are not - have the right to love each other.

Love is heresy. Their should be no man or woman or child before or after the EMPEROR. Civil unions are not out of love, but a duty to the EMPEROR. An ideal human should neither lover nor hate others within his family unit for they are there to provide and rear the next generation of the EMPEROR'S devout followers; nor his battalion/colleagues/etc. for it is through these weak emotion that we fall to chaos. Our only solace is through our hatred of our enemies and the love of the EMPEROR.

I have battled countless battles, seen countless horrors, witnessed countless deaths - both man and xenos alike. You think I know not what Chaos is? Foolish human, it is you that does not understand the true nature of Chaos.

Don't you see? This whole war between Man and Xeno: it's all just a scheme of Chaos. They pit us against each other through schemes and lies because they fear the alternative - a universe where we work together, and stand up against their horrors.

The time when the Tau and the Imperium are joined as one may not come today or tomorrow, next month or next year, or the next thousand years.

Of that, Inquisitor, I have no doubt.

You bring about a good point. Our beloved Imperium is rife with hypocrisy and greed, ignorance and stupidity.

Why do you think I was stationed in this sector, away from my battle brothers with only a small strike cruiser to defend these worlds? You know what they say. An open mind is like a fortress, with its gates unbarred and unguarded.

Oh, Tomas, these days are the only days we will ever see. The glorious Imperium for which we fight is actually nothing of the sort, but it is the only place, the only thing in the entire Galaxy that allows our race to continue living, even if is a slow decay into nothingness.

Most are blissfully unaware of these things though, having known nothing else. Happiness through ignorance. It is better than nothing.

But such is not our fate. No, we must realize and accept the horrible reality for what it is, and continue to fight in its name regardless, not because we want to, but because we have to. If we don't, our race has no hope at all.

And thus, we stand slightly, eternally in the shadows, continuing our never-ending vigilance...

Fuuka, I thought. Hell. Every woman we haven't shot could be a cultist or witch right now. I know my wife is.

They'll make love wherever they damn well please, so long as it's not in public view. That's just plain inappropriate.

Otherwise, you won't harm a single hair on their heads.

Ah yes, the infallibility of the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. It's been in use for countless millenia. The criteria have changed over time, but the overall concept is the same and it still works just as well as it ever did.

Okay mate, let me get this through your exo-skeleton skull. We're the Imperial Guard, we serve on a million different worlds, and have to try to save every Emperor damned skub-herder that cries himself to sleep at night from a one legged kroot. We hold the damned line all day and all night, and we're really fuckin' busy here. So go ahead, point your "really scary gun" at a single base, shouting and threatening the guards on duty. I'm sure that'll go over REALLY WELL for you.

I'm punching Shuck in the face for this now. Just because of you. I'm not even going to explain why. Annoying prick.

Yes, listen to the guardsman. I don't think you need to worry about Private Shuck. I mean, his girlfriend is facing down the horrors that lurk in the dark, and the Imperial Guard has issued Shuck the most bitching flashlight in the known galaxy, so...
