Due to the fact that the last thread was SAMSON successful (take that as you will!), the command of the 46th light infantrty assault on Betty Crockers Hill continues!

There will be slightly more attempts at story and more MISTAKES to be made during ACTION and INFORMATION sequences.

Act stupid at your own peril!

Same rules for the choice of actions and requests for info apply.

    ***

You peer through the cluster of smoke rounds as more lance shots explode in the dirt around you.

The rest of Squads 1 and 2 are hunkering down in craters and smoldering wrecks as the team of Necron Destroyers continue to hold you back. BROCK SAMSON has taken in upon himself to smolder the bodies of Necron Ambush Squad so that they won't Come Back.

Your Chimera uses its autocannon to match the destroyers for range but as yet has failed to hit them. It's partially concealed by the smoke rounds but that won't last long and its OPEN position leaves it dangerously exposed for MISTAKES.

Your orders are clear, Take That Hill!

Your soldiers and curiously british tank commander await your orders!

    Platoon Strength!

    SQUAD 1
-You with Shotgun, 7 riflemen and BROCK SAMSON (Character Flamer Squadie with TOUGH SHIT, BURN IT ALL and NOT ON MY WATCH)

    Squad 2
-Corporal with Laspistol and Chainsword, 4 Riflemen and One Apprehensious Grenade Launcher Man

-One Chimera, autocannon and pintle mounted heavy bolter. Has rough terrain modifications and a bulldozer. Also contains a curiously british crew.

    Mortar Squad
2 men, one rifle. Someone drew the short stick. Currently happily protected in the Chimera.

You reach into your belt for your helpful HELP manual. The pages are covered in white sticky liquid, but the current situation makes it easy to ignore.

-Input suggestions for squad action, organization or drills! Normally I'll try to streamline the game by giving you hints as to what sort of orders you can give but right now anything goes!
-In the spirit of the above, remember your objective!
    -You can die. Act smart!
-People in your Platoons Carry Over to the next Combat Operation! Keep them alive for Bonsuses and Advancements! (like BROCK SAMSON as chosen by the last group that played)

You put the help manual away and SURVEY THE SITUATION.

Your men are awaiting orders pending an ambush by necrons on the way to Betty Crocker's Hill. You have anhilated the warriors but a squad of Destroyers threatens to annhilate you and your platoon with their long ranged weapons!

    Commands Needed,

ENGAGEMENT DRILL (What you want your men to do during a fight!)

ADVANCEMENT DRILL (What you want your men to do moving between and just before fights!)

Deploy Mortar Squad to cover and engage the destroyers! Squads 1 and 2 bounding advance to better firing positions under Mortar and Chimera cover fire!

Your mortar squad piles out of the Chimera and begins to set up in an abandoned crater.

Squads 1 and 2 pick themselves out of their cover at your panicked behest, you point them in the direction of the Destroyers.

Your Chimera stays in place, laying cover fire down by the bucket!

    Results,
-Men closing with Destroyers across light terrain!
    -Mortar Set Up!
    -Chimera Laying Cover Fire!

Your men pick up the pace as the steady thump of mortar rounds entering and leaving the tube reverberates in the air. The first few rounds scatter wide of their target!

The Autocannon on the chimera continues to fire at the distant Destroyers but fails to down any!

In response, the Destroyers finally draw a succesful bead on the exposed Chimera. Three bright green lances pierce the front of the hull and come out the back, igniting the fuel tank.

    Results,
    -Chimera Destoyed!
-Men have successfully entered lasgun range and can now engage the Destroyers
-Mortar deployed and rounds dropping on approximate Destroyer position.

I presume I have a vox-caster and communications with the mortar team. My squad will find cover and lay down suppressive fire while I use the vox to walk the mortar rounds on to the destroyers. Squad 2 will flank.

The chimera crew will be mourned later. By the way, did any of the crew survive?

You do not have vox communication headsets. The men from the armoured fist squad that saved you in the first place do, but they are evenly split between Squad 1 and Squad 2 (the previous players did not think to split them evenly)

The Destroyers are now taking pot shots at your advancing squads. No one has been hit, just yet.

    >>5775715

There might be items salvageable from the Chimera, were you not so far away. The flames make it hard to see. You can't tell if anyone made it out. You wish you had asked them to move themselves into a better firing position.

We will flank around/through the nearest piece of decent cover that allows us to approach at a near-right angle to the enemy firing at our suppression squad.

Cracks from lasrifles echo around you as men pop up and down from cover loosing pot shots as they go but nothing substantial. You make a quick measurement and estimate a charge by BROCK SAMSON has a 25% chance of getting up there and torching ONE destroyer.

    >>5775826

You pray and unsheath your shotgun. BROCK SAMSON tackles you down as a lance shot zooms past over head. He shakes his head.

-Men moving slowly from crater to crater but gaining good ground

-BROCK SAMSON feels HUNGRY FOR ACTION. You tell him to shut the fuck up.

    >>5775872

Your second in command squawk your orders to Squad 2. The corporal nods his head and they rise in unison to unleash a facade of red hot lasfire. The grenade launcher man rises timidly and lets loose a grenade.

The Destroyers turn to face Squad 2. They shrug the lasgun fire off with ease but with a krak and a boom, a Destroyer goes down! A lucky Krak Grenade Hit!

Squad 1 begins to flank, BROCK SAMSON leading the way!

    Results from ACTION,
    -Squad 1 flanking!
-Squad 2 suppressing, the Destroyers have now turned their full attention to Squad 2.
-Mortar Squad Laying Down the Hurt
-One Destroyer Down, 2 more to go.
    >> Anonymous 09/08/09(Tue)13:48 No.5775967
Right, i think its best if we huddle down in these craters and keep as low a profile as possible, perhaps send BROCK and ourself round to an area from which the flank of the necrons will be vulnerable. I would also say its time for the grenade launcher man to start firing
    >> Anonymous 09/08/09(Tue)13:55 No.5776027
So if I get this right- we have squad 2 flanking while squad 1 lays down a base of fire. Huh. What anti-tank weapons does squad-2 have?
    >> NotAnotherQuestFag! 09/08/09(Tue)13:57 No.5776046
As you begin your flank, the Destroyers take note of your movement and begin to fall back. Covering fire from the Destroyers forces the majority of Squad 2 to duck for cover. The Grenade Man is still in the open, fumbling with the release catch.

You realise if the Destroyers successfully withdraw, they will be able to pelt you from long range, far beyond the range of your lasguns and it will turn into an artillery duel between the Destroyers and your Mortar.

A burst of speed might see you catch up to the Destroyers for a close range volley or even for some close combat but even the limited time you've spent fighting these mechanical horrors tells you this would not be bloodless on your part.

The Destroyers continue to put distance between you and your platoon as you ponder the next course of action.

    What do you do?
    >> Anon 09/08/09(Tue)14:00 No.5776078
I think that we should have squad 1 charge while the opportunity is ripe and pummel the destroyers with krak grenades.

how far is squad 1 from the destroyers?

we should signal the mortars to cease fire as the charge is mustered of course.

Is there any cover we can utilize to keep pressing the assault without a full-on charge?

Definitely have both squads charge with smoke cover.
    >> NotAnotherQuestFag! 09/08/09(Tue)14:17 No.5776287
As the smoke covers you advance you pump your shotgun. With a hearty yell to the heavens you lead squad 1 and squad 2 through the smoke!

The Necrons pour fire through the smoke wall but to no avail. All around you the battlecries of your men ring out undiminished!

You have caught the Necrons FLAT FOOTED.

Your first shotgun shell slams into the first destroyer, shearing off its pulsing gun arm. The next few guardsmen to emerge through the smoke pour rifle fire onto the downed destroyer with merciless abandon. Under the relentless fire, it goes down!

Corporal charges the last destroyer with his chainsword. Now caught in close combat, none of your men risk shooting. Everyone charges!

The Chainsword clangs off the metal hide of the Necron with a terrible certainty and with a swing of its long barrelled cannon it sends the corporal flying.

BROCK SAMSON takes this opportunity to jump on the back of the Destroyer. Sticking his flamer to the back of its head, he pulls the trigger.

'BURN IT ALL' He yells enthusiastically.

This causes the Destroyer to go haywire, shrugging SAMSON off as it spins erratically. The rest of the riflemen engage with rifle butt and bayonet.

It takes a while, but you manage to get the Destroyer down. It whirs and clicks down to oblivion, the light finally leaving its eyes.

BROCK SAMSON has already shaken off his tussle with the Destroyer and has already moved among the fallen, twitching necron bodies flamer in hand and passion in his eyes. He melts them down to slag. (Congratulations! MISTAKE averted!)

Taking stock of the situation you look around you. The Corporal lies crumpled in a heap of flesh, his spine shattered from the swing of the Destroyer. He's already gone to the Emperor's Side.

Two more Guardsman have joined him, one with a caved in skull and the other having been caught at point blank with the Destroyer Gauss Cannon.

    One Mortar Squad
    -2 Crew

Your soldiers take a break from their exertions. You can hear the renewed sound of gun fire up ahead. You know the Leman Russes must be tackling the opposition on the hill. How long they will last, you don't know.

Anything we're going to fight is likely going to take all the men to take down anyway and when reinforcements arrive we'll hopfully gain that versatility back.

You have promoted BROCK SAMSON as Squad 2 Leader

Note - Promoting a Grunt to any form of substantial leadership position will grant him the TOUGH AS SHIT trait (gives him PROTAGONIST ARMOUR, making them as tough as you are) Since BROCK already has this, he does not get it again. You manage to reach the survivors of 11th platoon and tell them to gather at your position. While you scavenge the wrecks and bodies around the area, they accumulate together to form the following,

    Squad 3
-5 riflemen, one with magnoculars who's designated himself leader. You assume he's trained in their use.

    Heavy Bolter Team
-2 men, bringing one rifle to the party. That and a Heavy Bolter!

You reorganise the men, making sure designated leaders and weapon teams have at least one vox bead each.

    Platoon Strength!
    Squad 1
You with Shotgun and Chainsword, 5 men with Rifles, One Grenade Launcher Operator

    Squad 2
BROCK SAMSON (Named Character, Flamer armed, TOUGH AS SHIT, BURN IT ALL and NOT ON MY WATCH traits) leading 5 riflemen

    Squad 3
-5 riflemen, one dedicated spotter within

    Heavy Bolter Team

    Mortar Team

    Scavenged Equipment List
-Laspistol, additional Frag, Krak and Smoke grenades.

I say combine squad 3 with the mortar team. This way our mortars have an effective spotter and also vox communication.

Disperse squad 3 riflemen into squads 1 and two

Move out, squads 1 and 2 take point, mortar and heavy bolter behind. Keep good spacing to avoid being smoked all at once by artillery.

What we really need to do is find out all that we can about the distribution of our forces as well as the strong/weak points in their defences, even with the 2 heavy weapons teams we can hit a weak point and maybe get behind their lines and wreak havoc.

So contact high command and ask for information on the distribution of our forces and their forces.

In addition, naming characters is an EARNED ADVANCEMENT.

I try to grade you on the intelligence of your actions. For example, it was possible to survive the ambush without losing your Chimera or those men.

It would've earned you a NAMED CHARACTER and the reinforcements as well.

Take note, BROCK SAMSON was once a faceless flamer operator the previous players used their NAMED CHARACTER advance on.

You look at the fresh arrivals from 11th platoon. Despite your best efforts, a witty nick name eludes you. Perhaps later?

You start to weigh in on the advantages of merging squad 3 with the heavy bolter team. It would grant them more protection as well as offering you a solid fire base and reduce micro management (you can and will suffer penalties for having too many 'squads' under your command, don't worry though, you guys haven't reached it yet) but would make it harder to give different targets between the riflemen and the Heavy Bolter team.

You consider merging Squad 3 into Squads 1 and 2 while keeping two men as a spotter team to act for the Heavy Weapons. (requires confirmation)

Your attempt to raise high command only has them repeat their orders at you. You cut the link in disgust. Attempts to reach the Leman Russes ahead is only met with the sounds of static.

(take your time gents, the next combat op is meant to be the BOSS STAGE and will consist of two COMBAT ENCOUNTERS and one BOSS ENCOUNTER)

I vote for a larger firebase. Heavy Bolter is primarily an anti-infantry weapon so there shouldn't be much of a problem with combining it with Lasfire.

Recomend deploying Squads 1 and 2 on point, 1 on left side of the track 2 on the right, keeping nice and spaced, followed by Squad 3 (with heavy bolter) and Mortar team.

On contact Squads take cover and lay down suppressive fire.

Engagement wise we should for sure have the Heavy Bolter be our base of fire and put the hurt on those xenos machines.

We'll have to play it like a WW2 German Infantry squad until we get more men, so our other squads (barring the mortar) should act in support/protection of the heavy bolter team.

Squad two with BROCK SAMSON should be our manuever element, ready to charge and get dirty when the time is correct (should we give them extra grenades).

Squad one can be the fire team and press home with the grenade launcher and allow us to get a good picture of the battle and lead it.

    >>5776887

    STAY OFF THE ROADS

we don't need another ambush, since we don't have vehicles we should be able to foot it through whatever cover is available

    I'm repeating my previous request
    >>5776681
to give the mortar team the spotter and bolster the numbers of squads one and two with the leftover grunts from squad three.

    I say advance in a T formation:
    Squad 1: top left
    Squad 2: top right
    Heavy Bolter: middle/middle
    Mortar: middle rear

Also, would we have the ability to give some sort of short motivational speech/prayer to our troops to give them a sort of morale bonus or something? (Dunno if that's applicable in this setting)

Also, might want to test comms and weapons to make sure we have functioning equipment with all platoon elements, don't want to find out our shit doesn't work when the ROBOT ZOMBIES are pie-holing us

So treat the Heavy Bolter as a machine gun, and roll it in with the Mortars? Not a bad idea. The mortars can fire from behind fire since they've got the benefit of the spotting team, which means we don't have to risk losing all our heavy weapons by bunching them up in one group (the bolter will require LOS, of course.)

COMBAT OP 3 - Taking that Damn Hill

Your men advance in a steady v formation. BROCK SAMSON feels the urge to advance faster but it would deny you the use of your heavy bolter in an immediate engagement. You tell him to shut up.

Avoiding the worn road, you and your men advance steadily down the trees on the side. Here, the war seems to have taken less of a toll. Amongst the careful stride of your foot you take a moment to admire the whisper of wind beneath the branches and the sun through the still standing trees.

The crackle of the vox interrupts your peaceful reverie.

'Hey, sarge. Spotted movement down the road.'

Your men halt and hunker down between the leafy boughs. You remind yourself to reprimand that man, your not a sergeant yet.

Your Heavy Bolter sets up behind a cooling Chimera wreck in the middle of the road, giving it plenty of good cover and a good firing position. Your men take up positions on either side of the road in the trees. The mortar sets up some way back from the heavy bolter.

You can all see the Necron Warriors advance this time. Their once sleek and shiny metal armour now tarnished. Behind them, a trio of destroyers equally battle scared. They advance down the road in a routine column, all marching to a single unheard beat.

You've got them walking right into you and they don't even know it. (MISTAKE averted due to ADVANCEMENT DRILL, well done!)

    >> Demic 09/08/09(Tue)15:41 No.5777286
What we have here gentlemen is an opportunity to Ambush, if we play it right.

Recomend squads hold fire until targets are in range of Squad 3. At this point, they open up, and Squad 2 doubletimes it quickly and quietly down the flank (keeping cover between them and the targets) to cut off the enemy line of retreat.

As soon as squad 2 are out of squad 1s Line of fire squad 1 open up too to distract necrons from squad 2s movement.

With any luck, the necrons should get caught by the bolter team infront, squad 1 on there flank and squad 2 behind them, ready to hit them if they try to fall back.

Your men follow your engagement drill to the letter!

The heavy bolter starts to fire at the advancing column, rounds spitting out with a fiery promise of destruction. 6 Warriors are down before their column even begins to change shape.

The men open fire from either side. Accurate, concentrated fire sees another 6 go down. Grenade Launcher Operator lets one fly and plinks another Destroyer, watching with an open mouth in amazement as it sinks to the road as its hover body gives way to the damage.

The mortars let loose its first rounds.

The Necrons are slow to recover. The surviving 8 warriors return fire but to little avail.

The two remaining Destroyers are faster to recover and begin withdrawing. You've seen this before.

There's a weakness of this plan- Necron warriors are damned tough. They might move quickly into the woods and engage squad 1 in melee, and then we'd be completely boned. We can't afford to lose the firepower that squad 2 can provide. Grenades in particular are essential, since we're mostly using flashlights.

Mortar fire and grenade launcher continue to target the destroyers. Everyone else, keep focusing fire on the warriors. If they attempt to move into melee with either squad, use grenades to hasten their destruction and keep them at range. When all the warriors are destroyed, blast them some more to make sure they don't get back up.

If the destroyers manage to reach range and begin long-range fire, move everyone out of their field of fire and attempt to flank with the infantry, then destroy them with close-range swarming.

You yell through the vox screen, and you Heavy Bolter replies. It changes its fire towards the retreating Devastators.

The high explosives ram into it with all the force of an avenging angel. It's not too long until its nothing more than scrap metal.

The remaining warriors are pelted with krak grenades. Your men would move to the side of the road with more heavy cover, but there's no need, the combined volley of 16 krak grenades has absolutely demolished the 8 warriors.

The last Destroyer is grazed by an incoming mortar round. Engines destroyed, it nevertheless manages to hover above the ground and attempts to 'limp' away as best it can.

Unfortunately not, the town runs right around the smoothest path up to the summit and the observation post at the top. However, it would be possible to take a less cluttered path and cling to the outskirts of town, though your not sure which is safer.

Clearing the town would be safer for Imperial Forces following from behind while attempting infiltration would better allow you to reach the summit intact.

Sweep around the side of the town while remaining in cover and set up squad one, the mortar team, and the heavy bolter team in position to provide fire support. Subsequently, squads two moves into the town stealthily, attempting to identify any enemies before drawing them out into the open so that they can be brought down by concentrated fire.

Let's get to house clearing! Necron doctrine doesn't dictate sniping, so we shouldn't be too worried about that. What is the town made out of, rock, wood, concrete? Will Necrons be able to shoot through cover? On the outskirts of town, is there sufficient approaches under cover (walls, hedges)?

    In that case...

Forward to edge of town. Form skirmish line in cover at outskirts (S1 Left, S3 Centre, S2 Right, MS Centre Rear), have Magnocs observe the shit out of the nearest building for movement/gunmetal skeletons, and move in and occupy it with S1 & 2, with S3 + MS covering. Once secure S3 move up and occupy same building, then start clearing buildings with S1 & 2, one building at a time, while S3 covers.

    Pros:
Less likely to get bitten in the ass later
Might earn us some shiny new medals
KILLING IN THE NAME OF (the emprah)

    Cons:
We've not exactly got the manpower or weaponry (only one flamethrower) to take an entire town.
Likely to house an ambush or booby traps

    Infiltration
    Pros:
If done right, we won't lose any men or expend any ammunition

    Cons:
If done wrong, we could find ourselves facing down the barrels of a load of gauss flayers.
Our available guys aren't specifically trained or experienced in infiltration

    >Clearing the town would be safer for Imperial Forces following from behind while attempting infiltration would better allow you to reach the summit intact.

If we reach the summit while leaving hostiles at our back, it makes holding the hill kind of tricky.

I suggest deploying the heavy weapons squad in a position of advantage (that can also serve as our rear-guard,) along with squad 2. Leading squad 1, I shall lead them in a stealthy advance to a position of good cover where we will open fire on the outskirts of town, attempt to draw some sort of response (even if it's just scattered enemy fire) then withdraw quickly, hoping to draw the enemy out of the town.
    >> Subprocessor 225-B 09/08/09(Tue)16:22 No.5777846
I have two possibly stupid tactics to suggest for general consumption:
1: Necrons don't move fast. We scout around, engage then fall back rapidly, striking from multiple angles. If there's an equal number we have the advantage of being able to throw grenades into any mass of Necrons which they won't be able to evade.

Tactic 2: Have one guy run screaming through the town then back again, see what pops out. Necrons want to kill us, they come out to do so and we oblige them. Hopefully the running guy will survive as well.
    >> NotAnotherQuestFag! 09/08/09(Tue)16:24 No.5777883
You signal the Artillery Team forward and ask the spotter to look into town.

While he gets to work you talk to your squads about the possibility of infiltrating pass the town. The men nod their heads in agreement. Any firefight not fought is another firefight survived!

    BROCK SAMSON nods his assent.

This will require a radical shift in ADVANCEMENT DRILL and ENGAGEMENT DRILL. While in infiltration mode your HEAVY BOLTER and your MORTAR will not be able to fire at once if an engagement is entered into!

    You consider leaving them behind...

Actually the bait and trap seems like a good idea. Just lets make it a bit more military.

Or should we clear the town as normal. I'm pretty sure the Necrons aren't adept at Urban fighting, its kind of a stompy/shooty kill type of fighting for them, they are like "immortal" machines that can come back after all. In the least they don't think "human."

You gentlemen have said it. We suck at melee, Necrons rule at melee, we don't have the kind of firepower we need to go toe-to-toe in an urban environment. Skirt the town, advancing by squads- we have enough firepower to level any one building we take fire from, but not enough to systematically sweep the area. My plan to draw out Necron hostiles will work just as good from the OTHER side of the town, if need be.

Dig a fall back position near the town, but out of fire range. If we have enough time, set up auxillary spots all around the town. Sit tight there and send a scouting party up. Have the heavy bolter sneak into an advantageous building and keep the mortar back in the support trench. See if any enemies of the empire show their heads, prepare to assault the town from all sides if they do.

Advancement drill- have each squad assign their two best throwers to grenadier duty, keeping the most explody grenades they have in hand (at the cost of quick lasfire.) If they take any fire from any building, apply grenades instantly, pop smoke, and put sustained fire on the building(s) in question until it catches fire. The squad not fired upon will advance past them to a flanking position, whereupon it will engage in cover fire and allow the first squad to advance.

The mortar and bolter should focus on not getting shot at, at all costs.

set up heavy bolter on outskirts

have squad two advance into town slowly, poke their heads in, standing orders are to fall back into covering fire at first contact with enemy

COMBAT OP 4 - FUCKING THE BRICK PLATONIC

Squad 2 advances under the watchful eyes of their comrades. Darting into the city streets, the air falls eeriely quiet, the sound of distant cannons oddly reassuring.

One minute, then 5 then 10 pass. The tension is unbearable.

And get on the horn to command again, and this time tell them that there is an ENTIRE STONKING BATTLEGROUP here and that a swift airstrike might secure the hill. Requesting an airstrike is different then giving the location of a tight concentration of valuable enemy units- and more to the point, without some sort of heavy support, our only option here is to make the Necrons pay dearly for every inch of ground, then pull out. We're all in heavy cover and we're focusing fire on enemies trying to charge us through an open space and bottlenecks. I.E. don't use the mortar on the necron infantry, use it on the Destroyers.

IMMEDIATELY pull an infantryman from my own squad and assign him to the mortar team to help with loading, if we can. Make sure our spotter is in the best position (good vantage point and LOTS OF COVER) and that he has real-time communications. If they're lacking a commo bead, then pull another soldier to establish a command relay line where they shout fire corrections back to the gunnery team.

What are the chances we could use our flashlights to set afire the foliage near the Necrons and further complicate their LOS?

I'm worried about the two squads of destroyers, smoke will negate their range (for a time), mortar fire will hold them back unless they want to throw away soldiers, which given their numbers they may do, and that would be great

Also, if we can use the mortar to hold them in the town until air support arrives, it'll be an emperor-blessed massacre

First two posts were FIGHT so fall back is now not an option.

    ***

The gauss fire is accurate and deadly but the cover has saved you from most of it, You watch as two riflemen are flung back from their posts in the 'wall', large gaping oozing green holes in their bodies were flesh should be.

No need to check, two more names no one will remember.

The rest throw smokes down range, obscuring a majority of the necrons from sight. However, the length of the open field they must cross at a mechanical shuffle and the fire arc of your heavy bolter means that the two men can easily strafe the line from here.

The heavy bolter picks off the necrons as the straggle out of the town, taking out 6 in one long burst. A grenade launcher hit takes out a Destroyer and a mortar round sends 4 warriors to the ground as their legs are fragmented by shrapnel.

In the chaos, your heavy bolter only hears the change in target after the fact, their barrel still hot from the long burst.

    Results from ACTION
-A further 10 Necron Warriors Out of Action for a total of 17 (out of 50)
-One Destroyer down out of 6.
-The Necrons are closing! Though they are being cut down at the choke points, they will soon be past such murder alleys and be in the wide open, making it harder for the mortar to inflict casualties.
-The Tomb Spyder is gaining speed!

Yes, it's something that has already proven effective against Destroyers before:

    >The last Destroyer is grazed by an incoming mortar round. Engines destroyed,

This is Warhammer 40k, not real life, where mortars are light weapons effective against infantry but not armoured vehicles. And right now, we are desperately short of weapons that are effective against armor.

If we can put smoke on the Destroyer squads but not on the Necron infantry, let's do that, but otherwise it's best not to set ourselves up for close-range faceraep by superior enemy bayonet charge.

Destroyers are fast, and they can scoot through mortar explosions all day. It'll take a direct mortar hit (very unlikely) or a few krak munitions to take them out. There are two squads (I presume three per squad) of destroyers. We have one grenade launcher. They are dead shooty, dead choppy, dead hard and dead fast. We're fuxed, divine intervention notwithstanding.

Well, the destroyers are under smoke, so we may as well put our mortar fire on the infantry.

Honestly, I'm not sure if there's anything more we can do. We've got the best cover, excellent arcs of fire, and we're inflicting the maximum casualties possible while not getting range raped by a massive number of enemy tanks.

The only thing I can think to do is have BROCK's team advance a bit to make sure the Necron's will reach them first, while our squad moves a bit to ensure we keep complimentary arcs of fire. Brock's team has the flamethrower and some men with grenades ready, so they'll fare the best at close-range.

Our only other option is an aggressive advance to push the Necrons back into the town. They're taking fire from heavy cover and multiple directions; they don't know that they outnumber us.

You can see Squad 2 dealing with the destroyers. It's not going well. Already the crumpled form of yet another soldier can be seen. BROCK SAMSON has dealt with one Destroyer personally, it's body a smoldering ruin, its one good iron hand reaching up for something just out of reach even as it bubbles into liquid metal.

BROCK SAMSON has broken his arm! (Characters can sustain specific body injuries in the place of death!)

It's too late! The Tomb Spyder has reached Squad 2!

It crashes into the body of Squad 2 with all the force of a battle tank. The remainder of the men are thrown onto the ground like leaves in the wind. They are shown no mercy as the Tomb Spyder cracks in claws over them, splitting one in each crab hand.

BROCK SAMSON roars in defiance and takes a krak grenade in each hand. He jumps into the remaining destroyer and tomb spyder. The explosion is deafning and you are forced to look away.

Elsewhere, the heavy bolter and your own rifles are failing to make much of an impact against a now spread out necron line.

    mortar that fucking tomb spyder
squad 2 is fucked anyway, and we can't let Brock die for nothing

where is squad 1's grenadier? Smack that fool, he should have been firing at the tomb spyder ages ago

concentrate ALL fire on the tomb spyder, I mean everything. Flashlights, 'nades, heavy bolter, morter, insults about it's mother, the kitchen sink. Every. Effing. Thing.

Personally, I say have squad one snap off a volley of nades at the spyder and immediately charge. With only two minutes left we should be able to prolong death long enough for support to arrive, and I'd rather die on my feet in a charge than hiding in a hole.

Aim a shot at BROCK's fuel tank. With a bit of luck we'll catch them in the conflagration, making sure they stay down.

    BROCK has achieved EPIC.

ALL ENEMY ARMOUR IS DOWN. Enemy infantry is reduced to half their number. Let's see if we can't break their morale (if Necrons have such a thing.) Consolidate around our heavy weapons, dig in as best we can, and go wild.

On my part- I'm going to scream at the Necron's and let them know how fucked they are. I'm going to let them know that they just got corn-holed. I'm going to disparage their lineage back ten generations, ask them why they suck so much, and tell them where they can buy some nice dresses to go with their big mug of chickenshit they've been drinking from.

    Brock's dead, I'M PISSED.
    >> NotAnotherQuestFag! 09/08/09(Tue)17:44 No.5779034
Where words failed you before, they come to your rescue now. As the men's morale falters at the annhilation of squad two your roar into the heavens.

"FOR THE EMPEROR, IF THEY INTEND TO DRAG ME TO MY MAKER, I WILL DRAG THEM WITH ME"

Your words galvinise them. With a shout as one they lose all fear.

They are close enough for your shotgun now. You let loose two shells in rapid succession. You see a Necron Warrior go down.

You can't see the Tomb Spyder through the smoke, BROCK'S krak grenade set off the rest of them on the bodies of SQUAD 2.

Allied Fire sees a further 4 Necron Warriors go down.

    SLAM.

The solid tang of metal on metal threatens to drown your ears in a tidal wave of numbing sound. You are thrown to your feet at the impact as a Sentinal Slams straight into the Tomb Spyder.

It struggles feebly, the krak blast having made it slow and cumbersome. The Sentinel gets to work, brandishing its chainsaw before gutting the spyder like an animal.

It wriggles, once, twice, and then dies, the light in its eyes fading. Forever.

Around you soldiers rush past to help your comrades deal with their own problems. You realise its over. You allow yourself to sink to your knees.

What defines a cliche ending, in my opinion, is how unwarranted it is. If we had been railroaded into it, yeah, it would have been cliche.

But, we DID call for reinforcements, and our brutal face-fucking of the enemy DID roughly coincide with the timeframe for receiving reinforcements. Once it got close to the end, there, there was only one way for it to end, and OP took it there.

In every wargame I've ever played- computer or tabletop- when you've got an outnumbered infantry force with few heavy anti-tank weapons against liberal amounts of enemy infantry and armor, pinning their infantry at range and then using your AT weapons as liberally and as often as possible is your best shot.
