We've all been adventurers who traveled and died far from their homelands. Killed monsters and such. But what about the ones who didn't leave?

I propose a corn farming RPG, for the peasant battling against dire locusts and demonic aphids.

Possibly with GRIMDARK FARMER CLANS doing raids against each other.

Eh, your image of famers is very faulty to begin with. It was farmers who walked to russia to sell oil, toys and tiny birds in the off-season.
It was swiss and swabian farmers who worked as merchenaries and it was farmers who made the hussites stand through a crusade.
It was a bunch of sheep herders who build the largest land-empire of the pre-modern world.
The people who came to be the "ninjas" of our imagination were a collective of farmers.

My dad bought my brother and I Hero Quest when we were little. One day he went into a game store, and found some minis that looked very similar to the minis from the game (which we now know is WHFB.) He was told that the Gargoyle from Hero Quest can Count-As a Demon of Khorne. Which I never understood, until I started to look at WHFB more these past few years. I always thought, why would Corn have Demons?

Honestly I am envisioning this as being potentially fucking epic if done right. These guys have to keep a sustainable farm all the while the esoteric wildlife of the Forgotten Realms encroaches.

And being farmers, they probably lack access to any knowledge checks that would allow them to know what things are. These are the sort of people who would, taking a break from collecting chicken eggs, gouge the eyes of a beholder out using a hoe. Each year they pray to the pantheon that the orc hordes choose to migrate around their plantation this year.

I'm envisioning a Cleric with a straw hat and leather armour burning with vibrant blue fire as he brings the cornfield to life to strangle an entire army of goblins at once, adding their corpses to next years harvest.

An overarching plot point could be the relationship with a nearby vampire and/or castle.

Badass farmer rpg? Make it have a mega-fauna like the monster hunter series and a variety of weird plants like in plants vs zombies. Maybe some aristocratic flying city islands so the working folk have a place to sell their goods to... or just use small isolated communities, that works too.
    >> Anonymous 09/05/09(Sat)13:15 No.5734343
Are we using an existing system, or making a custom? For my own part, I think we should use the Warhammer Fantasy RPG as a basis, but homebrew the setting and classes. The warp and all that would take on a different name and image, more mysterious, unknown, unexplained and unexplainable threat. No demons, but shit gets possessed and mutated (sometimes literally, going to the outhouse requires a weapon and armor)

I know there must be a name for someone who's job it is to patrol the farm for vermin and thieves, but I can't think of what. But that would fit what you've suggested.

There should also be a class that focuses on training and taming animals and such, and potentially the possessed... whatever gets possessed. This will be about the closest thing we get to mystical without requiring a major off-farm quest.

Not so much directly in the vein of plants vs. zombies but certainly there should be some aspect, say a tree type that produces no crop yield but its scent turns undead or something. And then of course you can always as above have a cleric or druid equivalent burn their high level spell to animate the entire field at once, meaning even mundane plants temporarily become bloodthirsty killing machines.

At tops maybe giant venus flytraps kept as the equivalent of a rabid dog chained to a pole stuck in the ground to keep people out of the area.

Well, localized conflicts were pretty much the norm for agricultural communities. Just remember how the swiss war against habsburg amongst other things started out as a quarrel over pastoral lands with a cloister. Which the swiss resolved by attacking and plundering the cloister in question and taking all its inhabitants as hostages.

Or how animal herders, who were considered to be petty thiefs in the best and international criminal masterminds in the worst case.

And let's not forget that it seemed to have been perfectly normal for girls to present their boys with brass knuckels or rings that pretty much count as brass knuckles as a token of their love.

So classes wise, I guess we really need to figure out the sort of combat classes we need and then try to reconcile that with jobs needed on the farm. Attempting:

Mystic (IE Wis based Healer/Scryer/Knowledge specialist, during farming time pretty much serves exactly the same role, knowing when trouble is coming, and patching people up. Is only class for which literacy is a default ability).

Fieldsman: (Fighter/Barbarian equivalent, planting/harvesting specialist during farm time, can take a limited subset of animal skills but not by default.)

    >> Anonymous 09/05/09(Sat)13:51 No.5734621
Suggestion: A variety of crops could have different uses. I mean, wolfsbane to get rid of werewolves, St. George's Wart is deadly poison to dragons and is very valuable but difficult to grow due to insects and rodents loving the taste of it, and then there's food crops.

Suggestion: In non-combat time, players could fill out a time sheet, perhaps, detailing their use of time during the day. That way, the GM knows where they'll be at the time of an attack. If someone's eating lunch while another is milking the cows and Jerrobby is maintaining the root cellar, it might be hard to mobilize in time.

Grower (Plant Specialist, has some optional abilities overlapping with the Mystic with respect to herbal healing etc. but during farmtime they supervise placement of the more delicate and temperamental plants, and their subsequent care. In combat they are capable of using plants as summoned allies as well as using offensive herbal concoctions.)

Crafter (In farmtime, mends any mechanisms around the farm, sews clothing, etc. In combat, their dexterity allows them to use ranged weapons and occasionally contraptions they themselves have created in a considerably more effective manner. They also have a bonus of reduced equipment costs as they themselves are usually responsible for its creation.)

Tamer (Animal Specialist, In farming time is always the character that the animals get along with, at higher levels even the most eldritch creatures can be charmed by one. In combat the Tamer uses animal allies, a respectable close combat capability (Second only to Fieldsman), and charm spells to change the battlefield. Also will be significantly more proficient in horse riding than most, and indeed is the only class for which basic proficiency in this is default.)

Ratcatcher I'm thinking is more a manner of favoured enemy (rat)

I was stuck for a roguelike but you guys seem to have sorted it out:

Rustler (Usually outsiders, you can never really tell who's side they're on. But nonetheless, somewhere out there, some farmers wife is missing her estranged son. In farmtime Rustlers are useful in that they tend to have acquired a lot of speech abilities in their time wandering and can hence haggle with traders far better than most, and in addition, if times call for it, they may be able to relocated someone elses flock as it were, to your paddocks. They do not have animal charming or horseriding proficiency by default at 1st level but can nonetheless in time gain even advanced riding feats which only the Tamer has access to other wise. Given their wide range of abilities, their perfomance in combat can vary anywhere from daring feats of bravado, stealing an enemies horse off of them midfight, to blending into the corn, moving around to deliver a silent but fatal blow.

I still think a poacher would be better for a more local based Rogue. He's basically a shiftless layabout who gets by by nicking meat from the local lord. If he's ever caught he's going to get his hands and feet chopped off, but until then life's pretty good. He's tolerated because he'll often be the one providing the village with good game meat, and the fact that he often knows a lot more about the beasties tromping around in the undergrowth. That and the fact he's usually the first to know/die screaming iif any of said beasties are about to attack.

Also, more emphasis on running the farm. Someone get SimFarm running or something, suggest optimal crop-tending times, seasonal jobs for the different classes, ect.

Mystic (Or Witch): Starts as an apprentice, moves on to sagelyness. Using d20, primary Cast stat is WIS, followed by INT, physically fragile.
Fieldsman (Or Fieldswoman): Starts as a farmboy(/girl), pretty much just gets stronger, depending on the subtype (Some subtypes involve Warlord esque abilities that are powered by CHA) may eventually advance to being a core pillar of the community, a well respected, honest man, whos word is certain as bedrock, and has never shied from work in his life. Primary stat STR, followed by CHA or DEX depending on the subtype.
Grower(Gardener): Starts as a mere hobbyist but progresses to someone with a near supernatural mastery over all things photosynthetic. Some may think of plants in a mechanical sense (Int/Dex) and place them with great care, fully aware of the harm they can inflict. Others believe that plants are more intelligent than they seem and try to befriend them through respect and song (Wis/Cha). Depending on subtype Primary casting stat is WIS or INT, followed by DEX or CHA.
Crafter(or Seamstress) progresses from someone good with their hands (Sowing needle, clocks etc) to an obsessive to whom nothing is unfixable, and the concept of their body lacking the dexterity to accomplish any task concievable is alien. Primary stat is DEX, followed by INT.

Tamer: Begins as a stableboy, shephard or the like, and progresses to someone to whom communicating his will to animals is as natural as with another human, and with increased understanding comes an equal increase in ability to exploit their properties. A high level Tamer could concievably surf a horse. Primary stat is CHA, followed by INT.
Rustler (Outsider): Begins as a boy who is "trouble I tell you", but by high level a Rustler, depending on subtype chosen, may be a fisher of men, able to wrap the will of the people around his finger, or he may be a wild man, viewed with seething disdain by the authority figures of the town, who knows no fear because it is unfounded, who can matador a rampaging Ogre to death, who stages daring battles against overwhelming odds while on horseback, or perhaps he is the stranger who can always slip back into the shadow of the crowd unnoticed, or perhaps he is several of the above! The Rustlers primary stats may be DEX, STR, or CHA in more or less any order.

(I tried to find some badass communist farming propaganda but all I kept finding was pictures of obama :<)

I love this, but we should backtrack on classes and just find out the stats /skills we require and name them later.
I'm not familiar with WFRP but from what I've heard it fits perfectly.
What we should struggle to do is not to make the players OP, the point of this is to have a mundane "lynch mob" fight off supernatural and natural threats.
At high levels you're fighting off the army requisitioning your crops but the level cap is around somewhere where you become a legitimate adventurer although you can become increasingly badass after that. Instead of classes why not have titles you gain in the community? You just pick the correct skill tree branch corresponding roughly with the shepherd
    turns tamer/pocher
    classes we've been discussing.

To be honest, I don't see we need to do much to make WFRP fit. It does the gritty, "you are a shitty peasant and the only thing saving you from an ignominious death is your dwindling supply of fate points" thing pretty well. Just don't allow access into the magical careers, use the alternative, no-magic priests and you're set. Hell, a non-adventuring WFRP game could easily be based around the important characters in a small farming community beset by occasional orc raiding parties, the depredations of the local baron and the apparent "threat" of heresy. If you wanted to go more along the lines of some of the stuff suggested earlier, like controlling plants, or summoning pumpkin men, then you'd probably need to use another setting, but the rules for WFRP are fine, as far as I see.

I don't see a need to go into too much detail on the farming side of things, regarding skills at least. No-one wants to play a crop harvesting RPG. Just have a trade (Farmer) skill and leave it at that,
