74 KB Eclipse Phase - Transhumanist Nerdrapture Gone Wrong Mk.III Anonymous 08/29/09(Sat)16:00 No.5642930
    Last thread is here >>5633355

Your mind is software. Program it.
Your body is a shell. Change it.
Death is a disease. Cure it.
    Extinction is approaching. Fight it.

Eclipse Phase is a tabletop roleplaying game of transhuman conspiracy and horror.

Humanity stands on the cusp of a new age, with accelerated technological growth converging toward a singularity point, promising an undreamt-of future. Despite the ecopocalypse and social upheavals on Earth, humanity has conquered the solar system and partially terraformed Mars. Advancements in biotechnology, nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, and cognitive science have transformed our lives. Everyone is wirelessly networked with the world around them, AIs process vast amounts of information, and nano-fabrication enables people to “print” complex devices from the molecular level—at home. Biotechnology allows people to genefix, enhance, and clone their bodies, while others pursue body modifications to adapt to new environments or make themselves into something no longer quite human. People’s minds and memories can be digitized, uploaded, transferred over long distances, and downloaded into new bodies (biological or synthetic). Death has been defeated—for those who can afford it.

From within, disaster struck. Transhumanity reaped the rewards of its arrogance when conflict spiked between the battered nations of Earth, already weakened by decades of climate catastrophes and other disruptive factors. Rampant netwars soon exploded into physical conflicts with spiraling body counts. In the midst of these aggressions, a group of military AIs known as TITANS quietly achieved full sentience and autonomy, and rapidly began exponentially incrementing their own intellectual growth. The AI intelligences spawned by this hard-takeoff singularity quickly turned against transhumanity, enveloping the system in unprecedented levels of violence, disaster, and warfare. What began as a whirlwind of conflict between political factions, revolutionaries, and hypercorps soon escalated into a struggle between man and machine.

In just a few years, transhumanity was nearly wiped out with nuclear strikes, biowarfare plagues, destructive nanoswarms, infowar attacks, mass uploads, and other unexplained singularity events, ripping the superpowers of old to pieces. Our planetary home—Earth—was transformed into a toxic and strange hellhole, while many major habitats were left frozen sarcophagi in the vacuum of space. Just as quickly as they came, the TITANS disappeared, taking millions of uploaded minds with them, leaving behind a network of wormhole gateways. Known as Pandora Gates, these poorly-understood devices allow instantaneous teleportation to distant star systems—often one-way and/or fatal. Though only a handful of Pandora Gates are known to exist—each highly contested—the foolish, brave, curious, and desperate are already risking certain death to enter and explore what lies beyond.

In the aftermath of the Fall, transhumanity lives on, divided into a patchwork of hypercorp combines, survivalist stations, transhuman faction species, and city-state habitats. Under the oppressive police states of immortal inner-system oligarchies, advanced technologies remain highly restricted, and refugee infomorphs are held in virtual slavery or resleeved in robotic bodies and forced into indentured labor. In the outer system, rebel transhuman scientists and techno-anarchists struggle to maintain a new society—from each according to their imagination and to each according to their need. And on the fringes and in the niches lurk networked tribes of political extremists, religious fanatics, criminal entrepeneurs, and bizarre posthumans, among other, stranger, and more alien things ...

Though most claim the Fall was carefully orchestrated by the out-of-control TITANS, others whisper that the driving powers behind the wars—both AI and transhuman—were infected by a mutating virus with multiple infection vectors—biological, information, nano—dubbed the Exsurgent virus. Whatever its source, this virus has been known to sometimes transform its victims into something unexplainable ... something monstrous and reality-altering. Whatever the truth, the remnants of the TITANS and this virus were left to the desolated ruins or driven to the edges of the system, where they remain hidden away in dark corners, quietly waiting to infect the minds of the scavengers and explorers who find them ...

I still find it hard to believe that Islam was able to adapt to changing times more then Judiasm (Like they ever cared what anyone thinks of them.) And Christianity (which is adaptive as all get out looking at it's history.)
I mean hell Islams legal code is still Medieval Level in many area's. (Stoning, Hanging, Womens Rights, Honor Killing and etc.)

    Repostan from old thread:

There's a post on the devlog about that. It's not the hardcore fundamentalist "KILL ALL JEWS" type of Islam that you see on the news; it's more of the 11th-century kind that was developing medicine and algebra while the West was still trying to climb out of the Roman Empire's ashes.

Yeah - But we don't know how far exactly in the future the world is.

There's probably still a few reactionary Imams in their own little asteroid or oort colonies (as if they would live with the Jovian Great Satan who shares many of their ideals)

So I am stuck between three ideas so far. An uplifted Raven named Allan bird hacker extraordinaire. A gatecrasher Fall escapee that never wants to return to earth and wants to explore/find a new home for transhumanity. And a Scumborn Engineer/Black marketeer that is trying to get away from her homeship and its squalor .

Seems to me Christianity/Judaism have been spiraling down in religious fervor anyway. It may not be that they couldn't adapt, but that no one bothered to adapt them in the face of transhumanism.

Islam's radicals and moderate followers may just have been the only ones to cling to their god while transforming into machines.

Islam is well, very mathematical and poetic, opposed to the whole desertcrawler vibe in the Old Testament, and the whole fishfucker vibe throughout the New Testament.

So if any religion continues to live on in the future, it'll be Islam. Once it was synonymous with art and science, and it will happen again.

I think one of the biggest things people are forgetting: Humanity almost went extinct.

I'm not exactly sure what the population total is in the setting, but I think it's no more than 500 million. The largest surviving population is Mars with 200 million.

Every other planet seems to have between 1 and 20 million people.

Biomorphs are the biological sleeves, right? They're mostly cloned and mass-produced and so on, grown in vats and stuff. Then, cortical stacks are installed and they act as sleeves for previous consciences.

Aren't there any clone rights or anything? Are clones viewed as incapable of sentience? Aren't biomorphs allowed to develop their own intelligence or are they incapable of possessing intelligence?

It just seems to me that since bodies no longer matter, you could just pump out millions of clones to create millions of new people, allow them to develop, copy their personalities and continue.

Or, heck - get one clone, back-up its personality upon birth and replicate it a billion times. From there, they can all progress differently.

It seems like humanity's on the verge of instinction when reproduction is so darn easy.

The only problem with this is that you suffer stress if you wake up with a gap in your memory.

Which in your case would be 1d10+4. Bonus: if you take more stress damage than your trauma threshold, you get a derangement.

If you're not very good at handling stress, it'd be a good idea to keep your backup updated.

    OK, Plot Idea -

Alcor (RL Cryonics Company) has a bunch of bodies still left on earth, frozen at various points from the 1960's to a few weeks before the fall. According to their estimates, the various precautions they had taken to keep the cryonics capsules from failing are about to run out.

Alcor now doubles as an an investment firm still struggling to get into the new economy. The problem is that if the bodies aren't being preserved, they are now liable for all sorts of shit.

Utilizing ties they had established with Firewall and some Reclaimationists, your players have been tapped for a desperate rescue mission to earth to retrieve as many suspended individuals or heads as they can.

There are actually specialized child bodies called "Neotenics", primarily used by mechanics, engineers and some scavengers to get to the hard to get places in machine and so on.

    PSICLONE Project Quarterly Board Meeting
    2nd Quarter 8 AF
    FUTURA Project Conclusion—
    Executive Summary Report
    Prepared by Dr. Amelia Sheppard
Per request, I have compiled a review of the Futura Project and its fallout, 5 years after whistleblowers and intense media attention forced us to end the project and release the remaining subjects (dubbed “the Lost” by popular media).

Futura was a joint initiative spearheaded by Hanto Genomics and strongly backed by Cognite, with numerous other partners (complete list). The project was initially proposed by my mentor, Dr. Antonio Pascal, whose team had proven the feasibility of Accelerated Life Experience Training (ALET) after a series of pilot studies with two small (N<1000) samples. While it is true that these early pilot studies used both older subjects and a lesser amount of time dilation, the rationale for the Futura Project’s ambitious program was justifi ed by a remarked decrease in transhumanity’s population due to the Fall, a system-wide stagnant population growth rate (blamed on various factors including increased longevity, available contraception, and rising despair over troubling times), as well as a desire to move aggressively into a new technological sector in the hopes of obtaining a competitive advantage.

Futura began immediately in the wake of the Fall with an initial seed population of test subjects culled from extant genetic material and gestated to between 1 week and 6 months after birth. Of these, less than 10% were live births from either a surrogate or genetic birth mother who had perished during the Fall. The majority came from our Lunar and Martian labs and were brought to term within an exowomb.

After the sample was selected, all subjects were sleeved into our fast-growth futura-brand biomorph bodies and inducted into customized simulspace accelerated learning environments. The project made extensive use of emergent technologies and techniques culled from recaptured TITAN facilities, including neogenetic traits for the futura morphs and time distortion applications for captive simulspace populations. Futura ran concurrently on three different research stations with a combined staff of 2,211 researchers and support personnel and 45 AGIs custom-programmed for expert child development. Project goals were to raise each child to a subjective 18 years life experience in 3 years objective time.

Despite omnipresent observation and real-time adjusting of the simulspace and educational programming for optimal normality, somewhere along the way the project suffered a breakdown in quality assurance and parameter monitoring that resulted in a near total failure at empathy modeling. We fi rst observed this effect 11 months into the project when the subjects had aged to approximately 6 years of age. Incidences of animal cruelty and acting out had spiked, though at that time they remained within acceptable standards. Over the next few months this trend continued and Dr. Pascal authorized the usage of more authoritative “parenting” to attempt to correct for the borderline sociopathic behavior that was being exhibited by 23.19% of all subjects by the 18- month mark (9 years of age).

We now know that these changes had the unintended consequence of suppressing overt displays of cruelty and violence and merely taught the majority of subjects how to conceal their psychoses. It was also at this time that the fi rst deaths occurred. The initial waves were thought to be accidents and both the victim and perpetrator were usually backed up to a week or so of subjective time. Post-project analysis now shows that 43.87% of our subjects had engaged in at least one act of premeditated murder by the 24-month mark (12 years of age) and the counseling protocols were only training them how to lie more effectively.

It was at this point that myself and Dr. Aaron Bharani advocated pulling the plug on the project and bringing the subjects out to real time and intensive counseling. Dr. Pascal vetoed our concerns without ever taking them to the board. As the project spiraled towards its conclusion, a fork of Dr. Bharani went public at the 34 month mark, inciting a fi restorm of controversy. While Dr. Pascal successfully tied up investigators, hoping to see the project through to its conclusion, the incident at our Legacy research station occurred. Initial fi ndings concluded that one or more of the subjects had escaped the program and were in fact responsible for the habitat’s environmental failures and the thousands of subsequent deaths. In the face of intense public and private scrutiny, many of the partners involved in the project attempted to pull out and even eliminate all traces of their involvement. In the resulting chaos, an estimated subjects were quietly released into the system’s general population. It was only after this occurred that all known subjects were identifi ed as having been infected with the Watts-Macleod strain of the Exsurgent virus, though when and how this occurred remains troubling and unclear. Though later orders resulted in all remaining subjects being euthanized and/or backed up into cold storage, only of the released subjects were recaptured. Of the rest, pursued sanctuary with sympathetic authorities, went public and submitted themselves to extensive psychotherapy, were killed in incidents of violence and not resurrected, and the rest presumably went into hiding.

The result was the Tachikoma, specially built to perform in nearly any environment with complete autonomy and competency. These are just stupid. Advantages or disadvantages should not be given to skills.

Obviously the implication is that the morph cannot speak very well, or hold weapons very well. But when you consider that it's just a shell, a body, and that the entity that is actually skilled is the mind, it doesn't work out.

Imagine this: You've got a character fluent in Russian. They hop in this morph, and suddenly they can't speak russian fluently anymore, even if the message is completely digitized.

Or how about a character who's in this morph, but wirelessly connected to a weapons platform? The morph gives them a magical disadvantage to shooting things.

So, I think I've finally settled on a character.

Basically an arrogant smooth talking hacker. Originally from a small scum barge, she wound up signing on with the Nine Lives. In addition to being involved in the soul trade via Nine Lives, she's also engaged in drug trafficking and the underground X-casting scene. Extremely narcissistic, she utilizes a fork of herself as her muse, uses forks of herself for sexual pleasure, and ultimately aspires to create multiple alpha forks of herself to create an organization similar to Pax Familiae. Additionally, she's abnormally protective of her forks, as she views them as the only people equal to herself. Her love for her forks earned her the ire of the Jovians after she rescued a fork of herself that was undergoing aggressive interrogation (said fork is the one that would become her muse).

Morph specific advantages and disadvantages should be in the aptitudes, not the skills.

Because it's silly that a morph which is damaged and in need of repair thus suffering penalties to shooting kinetic weapons, can suddenly fire seeker weapons no problem, or can throw things no problem, or has no difficulty typing or manipulating fine objects.

A change in aptitude fixes that, because it applies to everything related to that aptitude.

So this deathclaw should have a penalty to coordination and intuition, and a bonus to reflex and somatics. But no skill-specific bonuses or penalties.

Its odd, but the classic form of Islam- which was a relatively liberal, intellectual and reasonable faith- seems quite popular with Sci-fi authors. Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy has it playing a part in the terraforming and structure of the martian roads and cities, and I like the way Eclipse Phase deals with it as well.

For those complaining about Christianity and Judaism falling behind, A basically logical reason for this occurring is that, at the time of Eclipse Phase, fundamentalist Islam has once again shifted back to its more liberal ancient basis, a time when the schools and mosques were places of science and learning. A faith with this basis would naturally adapt well to a transhuman future. Christianity and Judaism have, simply put, never been so supportive of, or central to, science.

As far as I've been able to tell, it's only less lethal in the sense that even if your character is killed, you still probably have a backup.

Otherwise it's not particularly hard to kill a morph if you set your mind to it.

For example, using this character: >>5644112 [We give him heavy body armor. For 13/13 armor with a WT of 6 and durability of 30.]

Let's say somebody shoots him in burst fire mode [2 attacks, +1d10 damage] with a medium kinetic pistol using armor piercing bullets [-7 AP, 2d10 damage]. For a total of -7 AP and 3d10 damage x 2. If we use the average damage [18 damage], then the Neotenic is taking two 18 damage hits. [We're assuming both attacks hit.]

The neotenic has 13 kinetic armor reduced by the AP to 6. So both attacks penetrate for 12 damage each. Since 12 is double his wound threshold, the neotenic takes two wounds from each attack, and must make a roll against falling over AND being knocked unconscious, TWICE. [Once for each attack, because both of them dealt 2 wounds.] The first roll is with a -20 modifier due to the first two wounds [-10 modifier on all actions per wound.]. The second roll is with a -40 modifier.

In addition to this the wounds bleed out, and the neotenic takes 4 damage per action phase [80 damage per minute].

The neotenic body has now taken 24 damage. His durability rating is 30. 6 more points of damage and he'd be unconscious without a save. His death rating is 45, so if he takes 45 damage, the body dies and his mind is saved into his cortical stack.

tl;dr - It's hard to hit someone, but when you do they pretty much just die.

I wonder if a moon could be used to increase Venus' rotation. It'd probably be a bit easier than building millions of giant fusion engines around the equator.

Once Venus can rotate, that half solves its problem with heating up from being so close to the sun.

Well, to be fair, the neotenic doesn't seem to have any sort of implants to make him more durable in combat.

There's stuff that can increase your durability and armor beyond just 13/13 for biomorphs. You could, for instance, get heavy bioweave armor, and wear a combat exoskeleton with some armor upgrades for 26/22 armor. Also, the low wound threshold on the neotenic really doesn't help him out. If he'd had a wound threshold of 7, instead of 6 he'd have taken 2 wounds instead of 4.

Personally, I think the system works fairly well.

Although some things [Sniper rifles] are overpowered, and others [machine guns] are underpowered. But with a decent DM you can get those modified a bit.

As a partially terraformed planet with vast tracts of

kerage houses do a brisk business in the purchase and

a sizable Martian underclass, however, organized as a

Well, part of the problem with terraforming venus is that one side is always facing the sun, and one side isn't. [Well, almost. It does still rotate, just not very much.]

If you can rotate it fast enough, but not too fast, then it can bleed off excess heat through radiation on its dark side.

Combine this with a high albedo surface [lots and lots of white daisies] and possibly a sizable solar shade of some kind, and you should be able to keep the surface from heating up too much.

    >Or, heck - get one clone, back-up its personality upon birth and replicate it a billion times. From there, they can all progress differently.

    Alastair Reynolds: House of Suns.
Galactic human cultures rise and fall, the only constant is the Shatterling Lines. Less than ten, I think. Individuals who cloned themselves, 999 times, then spread their shattered selves through space. They meet every million years or so, to exchange experiences. They see civilisations rise and fall, and the knowledge they possess is worth so much they can basically turn up anywhere and say "I'm here to experience your culture for a decade". That and they own rather awesome technology, having sampled bits of everything. The Gentian line, for example, are able to build solar dams around stars to prevent supernovas by taking precursor ringworlds and piloting them into a shell.

There are also transhumans in this setting, plenty of cultures that change their form but mostly originally human. There are transhuman individuals that became machines, one who is a nanoswarm in a desert planet's atmosphere, and taking the place of plantlife by providing oxygen, filtering the sun and so on.

Oh, and there are a race of elephantlike transhumans who have a fusion bomb in their chests. If they feel suicidal they take most of a city with them.

Actually Islam was once pretty progressive, while Christianity was the main religion of a continent which had just had it's main ruling power taken out. As a result it was used time and time again as a tool to get the masses to work towards the interests of prominent figures. Mean while Europe starts getting on top while the Muslim world stalls. After rougly 1000 years of religious conflict and infighting, the Christian European nations decides they've had it, and switches to a secular model. Islam on the other hand has not experrienced the same kind of religious infighting as the Christianity, and have managed to stay more or less unified apart from the whole Shia/Sunni thing. Suddenly Islam become the underdog and doesn't understand why, and it is common human nature to blame someone else. So now you have a Middle East with a shitty looking future, a large group of young males with little to no possibility of proper self realization, which also lessens the chance of getting laid. Pussy being the main motivator for most of what men do, appearantly. These young men get frustrated and radicalism flourishes.

As Cpl Person put it in Generation Kill: No pussy = War

All in all: Islam has not had the same time to grow as Christianity, lets just hope that outside influence will prevent it from taking 1000 years of bloodshed.

Well the reason for that is that the Exsurgent Virus, which corrupted the relatively benign TITANS was a creation of an ETI (extraterrestrial intelligence) several billion years old. So the Factors (who managed to survive their Exsurgent crisis) are terrified that the Pandora Gates might lead to the ETI and make it take a slightly more proactive attitude towards Exterminatus.

Hmmm so just fishing for ideas here. I am making a more or less infiltration/assassin/espionage character. My first inclination is to go with the Ghost biomorph. But the main focus I plan to have the character is to be more or less a hides in plain sight. That meaning they look like they belong where they are.

For instance trying to infiltrating a hypercorp. Watching the workers studying their uniforms their interactions and the like. Then through use of his smart clothes and maybe assuming one of their identities he would enter and get the job done. Whether that be hacking in and planting a virus or data theft or killing some one or what ever.

I think that's easier said that done since you have to incapacitate the target and find a place willing to do the resleeving for you.

It'd be easier to hack your nanotattoo ID to display the same ID as the target.

One of the available implants you can purchase is a prehensile tail.
There's nothing sayin you can only purchase one.
Other interesting options might include Chameleon Skin, Endocrine Control, Enhanced Pheromones, Grip Pads, Gills, Poison Glands or Skin Pockets.
For cosmetics, you might want to get Bodysculpting and Subdermal Implants. With this, you can get perfectly smooth, slimy skin. Perfect to imitate an slimy monster.

(Oh, and Bodysculpting can also be used for enlarging sexual organs. Enjoy.)

Suggested Implants for Averna, with a base biomorph of a sylph:

    Drug Glands (Hither)
    Enhanced Pheromones
Poison Gland (Flight - to induce fear)
Poison Gland (Oxytocin - to induce false sense of security)
Poison Gland (Twitch - to induce unconsciousness)

Sylphs - pleasure pods evoke disgust in the minds of many due to the fact that they're pretty unethical in design and in usage. Meanwhile, sylphs are perfect, designed to be ever so attractive for media purposes, not sexual.

The neotenic morph wouldn't be used for general purpose seduction, though. It'd stay on ice in a dollhouse until you get a target who is in to that sort of thing.

I'm not sure what the issue is. If you're seducing a target, you'll spend at least a day researching the target and prepping for the encounter. Your target shouldn't know you're resleeving for them.

You can either hack with physical connections or via the mesh.
After successful hacking, memories can be removed, the ego can be contained with the cyberbrain, the victim's body can be jacked, scorching software can be used to severely harm the victim's state of mind, the body can be shut down and the connection between cyberbrain and cortical stack can be shut down.

This is one of the basic concepts of the setting.

Everyone is backed up. Usually once per month. If you die, your backed up conscience is uploaded on to a sleeve with all of the memories from before the point you were backed up. So you might still lose two weeks of vital experiences or something.

@-rep -- Good if you're in the outer system, though the type of morphs you'll have access to may be limited. Probably will only have access to standard citizen morphs, and they may be used, but, hey, it's a body.
C-rep -- Good if you're in the inner system, Jupiter, and maybe even a few outer system habs. A wider range of morphs thanks to CAPITALISM!, but, once again, good chance that they'll be used.
E-rep -- Porbably the worst rep for getting a hold of a body. But, they should at least be able to hook you up with a basic synth.
F-rep -- Not bad, any body you get from them is gonna be pretty, and even if it winds up being second hand, it'll probably be in good condition (though, an addiction might be possible)
G-rep -- Probably one of the better bets for obtaining a morph, after all, if they don't have the body you want on hand, they can just steal it for you. Though, depending on your rep level with them, you run a chance of getting a body with a few bruises and a bad history, but, on the flip side, those bodies will also come with blackmarket hardware already installed.
i-rep -- Firewall is a massive conspiracy, they can figure something out. Though, if you're doing a Firewall job, they'll probably give you a morph without you needing to ask.
r-rep -- Good for getting those fancy top of the line morphs. Likely to be new, but you might wind up getting the results of a failed experiment.

The autonomists include the Titanium Commonwealth, and they're the largest morph producer in the setting. In addition, the autonomists tend not to have any restrictions against nanofabbers and such, which means anyone can basically make almost anything they want.

Ah, my mistake. It would appear that you can't hack biomorph brains. Only their mesh inserts. So while the hacker has admin access, he can't really do much beyond change reality as the the neotenic sees it. and/or mess with whatever equipment is slaved to the neotenic's mesh.

I suppose that means the hacker could activate the neotenic's gun if it were smartlinked...
