You are a first-generation parasite. A disease. A mutagenic aberration that, by some impossible mixture of accident and fate, has become self-aware. Your understanding has expanded well beyond the concept of "self", stretching into the realms of biology. The DNA of creatures is an open book to you, one which you can tear and knit back together freely. Your only limitations are physics and accumulated biomatter.

You have infested a small creature, a tiny street rodent. Your accumulated biomass is little, your small frame weak and vulnerable. You could, perhaps, grow a new appendage or some minor ability with your current biology. But the damage to your host would be great.

You must feed and mutate. A whole world stretches out before you.

You are currently in a back alley, lit by a sole drum of ignited petrol. A number of vagrants are huddled around it, using newspapers- a poor source of biomass- to contain their warmth. The street outside looks dangerous to enter into with so many potentially hostile organisms.

There are buildings to either side of you, their unending size positively incomprehensible to the tiny computing power of your pea-sized brain. It currently begs for a piece of cheese, but only your mighty parasitic powers keep it from going mad with awareness. As such, a piece of deliciously energy-rich cheese would likely be necessary.

Energy is required to survive through mutations, when you enter hibernation for expansion.

As such, you are left alone in the trash-laden alley, to your own nefarious- or beneficial- devices. Yet you only have a single driving urge at this current moment: To consume, evolve, and spread.

All fleas, tics, worms, and other parasitic life forms have been consumed for your initial reserve of biomass. You can, by expending some energy, reform that reserve into a small number of tics and fleas. Their effectiveness in overcoming the natural defenses of anything larger than yourself in a reasonable amount of time is questionable.

Though the exact science of it is a bit difficult, your expanded biomass reserves give you the energy to produce such glands. Your bite now unleashes a (slightly weakened) version of your current profile into whomever you bite! Large mammals are likely resistant to this dangerous tool, but quite a few smaller creatures will fear your presence!

    >>5450378
Using about half of what's left of your biomass, you produce several such tics. They quickly await orders, clinging onto your host body like mindless drones. You can control them through basic pheromones at this point, but they only can go a few feet beyond your current host before going rogue. They also have the expanded blood sacs modified into them.

You now have one kilogram of biomass left in reserve.

You are THE pinnacle of pathogens. Your current method of being spread is through directly overpowering the host's immune system. Unfortunately, you will require additional biomass before more complex (and effective) methods of establishing a host can be reached.

    >>5450393
Using the last of your biomass reserves, you enhance your current glands to produce a more complex pheromone. As it stands, you have yet to attract any fellow rodents. Given time, however, you will no doubt find more.

    >>5450396
Even if the previous parasite-mind had not used the last of the biomass, each upgrade alone- assuming that the intention is to double the current capabilities in each field- would require two kilograms of biomass apiece.

    >>5450402

As the consensus seems to be to wait until the vagrants fall asleep, timeskip will be enacted.

Several hours pass in waiting, the tics steadily crawling up and down one of the vagrants and collecting hair follicles piece-by-piece to pass the time. Some discarded newspapers are also consumed for their ancient, decaying biomass. Four kilograms in total are gathered by nightfall.

    >>5450435
Your tics rush into the ear of the human, careful to absorb blood as stealthily as possible. Their backsides bloated with over an ounce of the human's biological matter, they quickly return for consumption. The information contained within is fragmented and incomplete, but you know that the "humans" gathered here are indeed fully infection-capable, though their bodies possess powerful defenses against a parasite like yourself.

You gain two kilograms of biomass from the vagrant's blood.

Such an action, though quick to kill the man, would likely still result in him causing alarm in the process of asphyxiating: Flailing about, kicking, reaching down, so forth. Expending two kilograms of biomass, you create a flurry of new neural pathways in your host's brain. With a bit more thinking room, the rodent gains basic skills like literacy comprehension and infancy-grade vocal skills. With the vagrant's DNA, such skills are fully unlocked. You can now perform skills equivalent to a "First Grader" (A human designation for some sort of learning level). Two plus two equals four!

You find some idle grass creeping up from the soil. The information of chlorophyll, starch, and other such plant-based life becomes evident to you. Were you so inclined, plant-like attributes could be added to your host(s) at the expenditure of biomass.

Netting several flies, you accumulate the other half of a kilogram of biomass and the secret of insectoid flight. Unfortunately, your current body is too large for these tiny fly-wings to hold aloft.

The creation of a pollen-based infection technique would be very effective against the tiny insects, but humanoids would likely be immune to anything beyond irritation from your glorious parasitic form. Six kilograms would be required to create such a method of infection.

One kilogram of biomass to create six pregnant tics, which will infest the restaurant in under a day. Assuming, of course, that one rat is kept on station to keep them in line. If not, then two kilograms to create a "Queen Tic" for the gatherers.

    >>5451037
Two kilograms spent, a quick burst of pheromones sends the spores in every direction. Chemicals fill the air as they take root, beginning a deadly process of drawing nutrients and converting them.

    >>5451054
Are you sure you wish to send the rat into the outside street? Though relatively empty this late at night, there is always the risk of the odd careless human stepping upon your only other host form.

    >>5451055
This will cost two of your three remaining kilograms of biomass. Confirm offensive mutation?

    >>5451060
Half-mile control radius has been established. Tics, however, still rely upon pheromones due to a lack of receptor organs for electromagnetic impulses.

A third rodent appears at this time, lured- no doubt- by the sudden surge of activity at this time. It could be consumed for two kilograms of biomass, OR it could be converted into yet another loyal drone (requiring two kilograms of biomass to make EM-communicating).

You do not, necessarily, consume biomass when infecting. If you wish to remove body parts like claws, fur, etc, then biomass can be gained. The Tic Queen quickly moves under the crack of the door and into what appears to be the back room/kitchen of the eatery. Spreading out rapidly the micro-colony of tics establishes themselves in several pantries. >>5451270
With the acquisition of non-organic materials, biomass may by incorporated with them to dissolve, rework, and perform any other number of tasks. The more biomass used, the more of a material that might be incorporated (for example, three kilograms of biomass used in conjunction with a tin can might be able to produce a tin safety-shell around one of the Host-Rodents).

Would also work. But a drop and inject is probably more effient unless they are massive and needs more time to get all of it in. Which just raises the awareness of infection.

The rat dives into the sewers, your parasitic mind picking up on the details below: The utter lack of light, the abundance of fecal matter, the stone rungs leading up, and the sound of rushing water. Evidently there are indeed multiple rats down below: Rat 2 landing in a group of at least four of them. They all just continue scurrying around, scavenging through the disease-ridden waters.

    >>5451392
You are a virus. You replicate by taking over the host's cells and shaping them to your own whim.

    >>5451409
It is automatic that the virus spreads on to the next victim. However, the consumer of the rodent may have sufficiently strong immunities to resist the virus. The stronger the concentration (I.E. The more mutated/the longer it's been controlled) the more likely the new host is taken over.

    >>5451420
The upgrade for ALL tic-specific EM communication would be 3kg: They are much more numerous, smaller, and potent. Of course, the 1kg covers the ones currently produced. For all future generations of modified tic to gain the EM automatically, it would cost 3kg.

    >>5451427
For a tiny tic to infect a large human? It'd cost about twenty five kilograms to ensure ALL tics could perform the action. A single batch of six tics capable of performing that action? Ten kilograms of biomass.

We need to improve our vector of infection and virulence. Something along the lines of the Rage virus from 28 Days Later: Spread the virus via mucous membrane contct and overwhelm immune systems within minutes. If we pour all our biomass/research into this then the rest should be easy. How do we make this happen?

    >>5451529
Keep in mind that the full gestation time is a week, over which time the people afflicted would begin to get symptoms. So, beware what you buy is the bottom line for this virus...

    >>5451536
The rodent vomits upon two of the unconverted which- seeing weakness- quickly tear into it. The "enhanced" rodent does not last for very long, but at the cost of one you gain two! The other two rodents in the pack have wandered off, but the two infected begin to undergo their mutations as they dive through the muck in search of biomass. Consuming fecal matter like great vacuums, they collect two kilograms of the material.

    >>5451553
It takes three hours for the necessary biomass to accumulate, but soon enough your glorious form has been modified enough to auto-create the mutations upon infection. This has emptied your stocks of all but two kilograms of biomass.

The restaurant facility is fully operational, the pregnant tics bringing in 2kg of biomass every hour.

    Total Biomass: 2kg

Actually, there were multiple vagrants asleep in the alley. Three, to be exact. You drained one of his blood in his sleep to the point of going comatose. The other two are still asleep and bundled up in newspaper. If you care to wait, it will take 2 hours to produce the six tics necessary. If not, you could just drain the comatose vagrant for the rest of what he has in an attempt to rush things along.
