It’s all coming apart at the seams.

The UN was never strong, but it’s all but finished now. Old men screaming at each other over their collective impotence as their governments raid their UN dues to pay for the new weapon programs- so many feeble hopes, and the diplomats know it. Out of the wreckage of an organization that once threw around billions, our budget is six million. “Independent multi-national force,” they called us. Always a calling card for under funded and insignificant- but this time everyone knows it. The Kiryu-Kai still have yet to make a single interception; tooling around Asia in their shiny new F-2s, and the Americans are trying to weaponize the SR-71. The defense budgets of the most powerful nations on earth are being brought to bear- we’re just a small player in a very big game.

I wonder if there’s anything we can really do. The most sluggish intruders tend to cruise around just above our best interceptor fighter’s maximum speed, and when they’re done clowning they double that velocity and just fucking vanish. And everybody knows it. Everyone is terrified. Gun store inventories are sold out and backordered for six months. Farmers are hiring field watchers and security. And the UFOs, always the fucking UFOs, dancing and jerking about in the sky, just out of reach.

We’ve got the best equipment available to man, for what that’s worth. And I don’t think it’ll be much. Heavy assault rifles- AR variants that some genius decided to rechamber for 6.7mm just to let the little green men know we’re not fucking around. Some new 20mm autocannon- a low velocity grenade lobber, really- single-man portable, with innovations salvaged from the US Army’s XM307 project. And the most recent word in Kevlar full-body protection, for whatever it’ll do against ray guns. The interceptors arrived from Lockheed Martin yesterday, and the X-band radars at the base are coming online as I write. Our quarry seems to slip right past civilian air traffic control radars- so the only reliable detection network is that which we build ourselves. There’s a hotline for first-person sightings, of course, but its circuits are jammed with the cries of the panicked and the delusional.

"The point is that really, what it comes down to, what's more important than training budgets, rifle calibers, jet planes, and the organizational coordination is the money that's going to have to go to us down in the shops to basically revamp two hundred years of the industrial model."

"You think I'm fucking kidding? Have you seen the sample of what's on the god damn hull of these things? All I can say is thank god for the bloated military industrial complex, cause right now I'm not imagining anything ground based that'd be capable of penetrating these things. the reason that we've shot down ANY of these things? We're lucky, and they're lazy."

"Obviously we're going to be reverse engineering, I'd love to get my kid this for a bike helmet, but that goes back to my original point- we can't trust ANYONE outside of our bases with this. We don't know what ungodly awful shit is in this stuff, and combined with how on edge people are, and, and, and reports of alien NEGOTIATORS in DC, well, just to speak plainly, I don't trust anyone outside of X-Com with this. So, yes, tell the Germans we won't be needing the factories from them. I know. I know. We won't be able to have an army. But right now I'm staring a piece of metal no thicker than my finger that bounced a fifty caliber bullet off of it with little more than a scratch, with the guy wearing it barely getting a bruise. We'll manage."

"Remember, in the early days? When a crash happened out in fucking, fucking like the middle of the God damn Ukraine, we'd get NO back up? Just a bunch of troops staring at us as our skyranger parked down, maybe a bit of yellow tape if we were lucky, to cordon off the area? It's like they thought that aliens and UFOs dropping out of the sky were some messy waste, and we were the fucking garbagemen. How many of our guys got killed out there, with a fucking army sitting right outside, unwilling to move a muscle as burnt flesh wafted on the wind. Afraid of disease probably, they were all afraid of the damn diseases they would get. Early days of X-Com, the bases that were built originally, they, they, y'know, aside from the fucking, uh, what's the term, 'rapid reaction force'? I forget, but aside from allowing us to respond quickly, it was to cut us off from the rest of mankind. No one knew what the Hell these sectoid bastards were carrying with them. We had medical check ups, every three days, sometimes at random just in case we were hiding a third head or something."

"Now, of course, we realize how clean those motherfuckers are. And also, now, I have to blow money just to keep those fuckers away."

"You see that video being played every two hours on Fox? Some asshole reporter declares freedom of the press, and manages to sneak past the perimeter with a camera, trying to get a look at a snakeman terror ship, and for fucking WHAT? We brief these idiots, don't we? We sell corpses to God damn pharmaceutical companies for fuck's sakes, we CAN'T hide anything because then we would go broke! But no. Anything involving more than one language is a suspicious aberration."

"Then the chrysalid gets them, and the wounded man staggers off towards our team and gets shot."

"We lost ten million in funding that day."

We were in constant radio contact with the Interceptors, some six hundred miles ahead of us as they crept up on the UFO from extreme low altitude. Eight men crammed in the back of a Skyranger, thundering through the dark towards an unknown interception with an unfathomable enemy.

The radio went silent. They were going for the kill, and didn’t want to risk detection of their transmissions.

Either that, or they were dead.

Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs Braddock: ...The most important thing, I think, in presenting this matter, Prime Minister, is that we do not make it explicit, that we have a treaty with the aliens.

PM: That would be bloody wonderful, it really would be, but I mean, well, you've seen the proposal, haven't you?

    Braddock: Well, yes, I have.

Unidentified Voice: I think it's quite reasonable actually, all things considered.

PM: That's not the point- Look, I don't want any leaks, can we be clear? I, I, I, I MEAN you can talk about genetic diversity and necessary samples but I mean really-!

Braddock: Actually, recent polling shows that after the Thames attack, that, well, the people are starting to accept certain things.

Unidentified Voice: We understand our previous mistakes. We seek to curtail any disturbances in your society.

    PM: Meaning?

Braddock: To be frank sir? With record unemployment, and recent, ah, unrest, there's no shortage of those that no one will mind going missing.

    PM: Oh. OH. But-

Unidentified Voice: Your pride shall be kept. No occupying force. One loss, on our part. You will have your peace with honor.

Braddock: We think an event in Scotland would be best.

PM: Oh. Er. And the, the Command?

Braddock: After the way they handled the incident on the Thames? Any protest would only increase your support in the coming election.

PM: Oh. Oh good. Well, small sacrifices and whatnot. Do you take tea?

Well, Torchwood had a villainous Prime Minister who was more than willing to sacrifice Britain's children to aliens.

OP here, and another Michigan guy. I put mine in Michigan to start with just for shits and giggles (and because it was as good a spot as any to cover the US,) but I still can't get over the polygonal rape of the shape of the state. Seriously, guys. Seriously?

Unrelated question- noticed a bug involving using the interceptor for ground landings. Namely, two out of six dudes don't show up on the map,and if you use the "next unit" button to select them, the map goes all screwy.

Is there a patch for that? There was a patch included with my X-Com d/l I got off of rapidshare search, but it looked like it had a bunch of additional hacks and I thought that's all it was. Did it have bugfixes too?

    ah, you're using xcomutil.
do 'xcusetup' and turn off anything 'improved'. or read the manual

I have one that I kinda want to write, but I'm not sure if my writing skills are up to par.

Yep, that's what it's called. I suppose it lets the game run directly in XP, but when it crashed upon my first attempt I said "fuck it" and ran it in DOSbox.

Xcomutil's documentation was... for people who knew percisely what it did, already. Thanks for the info.

You only get better with practice.

no, it patches crap to fix some bugs and optionally improve some stuff. xcusetup will give you options, runxcom to actually set it up.

xcomutil's most awesome thing is name-based equipping - so / get standard layout, /s get sniper layout, /p psi, /b go blaster bomb and /sc get scout.

Well THAT is quite awesome. I didn't know it'd do that. I did jump at the chance to have stats right there in the names, though.

And it's nice to have working interceptor landings again- just the thing to get to a landed UFO that the Skyranger would never reach before it lifted.
