Well, what size is it? An Earth Elemental has an average INT of 4-6, according to the SRD, unless you're talking really huge/old ones. You're going to have to be very simplistic in dealing with the thing, as cross-species communication is tricky and pissing it off isn't going to do you any favors.

If you can boost its INT and/or get a spell cast on you to communicate with it telekinetically (given that earth elementals CAN speak Terran, but don't actually want to at any point in time), perhaps have a little quasi-date or something and see what's up with it. Who knows? You might wind up liking it, for all its simple charms.

I still vote for stone shape/flesh to stone. Add in a rank or two in Terran language, since in humanoid form it shouldn't be as tough to talk. The income from the gemstones and such should do more than cover the cost of the spells being cast for you if you aren't a caster yourself.
