We can only improve a human body to an extent, and if we engineered our own being, we could create an incredibly powerful being.
If we were discovered and the military implemented scorched earth policy, then the AVATAR project could easily retreat, or even survive the assault full-on.

Like I said, there's an extent, if we made the AVATAR out of just our viral cells, then it would be incredibly hard to destroy.
With a human, make their head concave, with AVATAR, you make it's head concave, every other cell still functions as a brain.
