Hello all, we've got four threads worth of fluff for this lovely world we're hashing out here and this'll be the fifth.

Very very briefly it can be explained as: Post-Apocalyptic Post-Cyberpunk. Cybernetic and Biological modification is common, even Nanotech is prevalent. The players in this game are members of groups called Delvers who go out and plunder the stores of corporate goodies while dealing with raiders, robots and mercenaries amongst the ruins.

a much more in depth discussion is available here:

Anyway, last night I promised y'all some writefaggoty story time. I've finished it up, I'm not quite happy with it and I may have accidentally switched tenses somewhere in there, but it's serviceable enough.

So, without further ado, Ajax & Friend's NewJ Vacation!

Ajax flinched reflexively as the auto-hypo broke the skin and began pumping its payload into his radial artery. The oxygenating agents and synthetic adrenaline shot through his veins and set his nerves alight. The impellers in his military grade cardio implants whined as they began shunting the drugs through his body at incredible pressure, any capillaries near the surface of his skin standing out from the strain of the supercharged vital fluids rushing through them. He was immediately thankful for the armor that encased him, as any puncture would exsanguinate him in seconds at the rate he was going. The extra oxygen would of course assist muscle function but the true purpose of the potent cocktail was to help his largely unmodified brain cope with the stress of rapid sensory input common in full scale combat.

He gritted his teeth a half second later when the drugs breached the blood/brain barrier and leapt across his cortex like arcing lightning. The familiar sensation of being in the eye of an impossible storm washed over him as the world his sensors showed him slowed perceptibly. His mind could fully process the frame rate his augmented eyes and cameras were feeding him and the effect was as if he were watching life in slow motion.
He had his back to a concrete wall, bits of which were quickly turning to shrapnel and dust as a hail of bullets whickered off the street corner around him. He was in a T intersection in downtown NewJ, 20 miles from Motorpool and 5 minutes from rendezvous with the patrol that had dropped them here two days ago. The good news was that they’d made it to the LZ, the bad news was that some Raiders had followed them. They’d moved into the east-west crossbar of the north facing T and were hit almost immediately. They’d gone for ARES first, which was smart, given that, what with being an infantry fighting vehicle and all, he had them massively outgunned on his own. As soon as he moved into the western section of the crossbar a mag mine had gone off right under his belly.

Unfortunately for the Raiders that had come charging right at him, eager for the salvage, ARES wasn’t digitized, he was a brain in a jar hard wired to the chassis. So while the mine hurt, all it really managed to do was glue him to the street for a while. PHü3r hadn’t been so lucky, her hard shell lay motionless next to her husband’s chassis while her shielded systems frantically tried to bring the rest of her mind and body back online. That made two mistakes for the Raiders, they hadn’t incapacitated the tank, and then they’d gone and made him mad. The five Raiders charging down the western leg could only look on in terror as the rotary gun of ARES’ back swiveled towards them and spun up with a high whine. Three of them were red paint smears almost immediately. The fourth took off running for an alley and was chased across the street by columns of pulverized asphalt as the torrent of explosive rounds from ARES’ gun kept coming. The rounds made it to the alley way before the Raider did and severed his legs at the waist. The fifth had gone back the way he came, hauling ass back up the cross bar. One of the two launchers that lay on either side of ARES’ chassis sat up and tracked, then let out a dull *fump*. The phosphorus grenade arced through the air and took the Raider in the back; he went down screaming. ARES had managed to get his legs unstuck when the mine ran out of juice and was now crouched over his wife like a very big mother bear.

Carlos was trapped inside ARES, the rear hatch’s magnetic seals fused by the mine, limiting his effective usefulness here to shouting angrily over the comm at the door, the Raiders and God for his misfortune. This left Yanno and Ajax the only active members of the team left. Yanno was now beneath ARES whipping up a swarm to replace burned out wiring clusters in PHü3r’s body. Ajax had been watching the rear when the mine went off, and was almost killed by three more Raiders and a pet ‘bot coming down the north facing leg of the T. He’d quickly rolled back, putting him on the eastern corner and the rest of his team on the western one otherwise occupied. The Raiders were concentrating their fire on him, no doubt pissed that their buddies had winked off the net thanks to ARES’ guns. His armor was good, but his sensors were telling him that it wouldn’t stand up to concentrated fire for the amount of time it would take to cross the street. Ajax decided to engage.

He stepped back from the corner and thumbed a stud on his boxy rifle. The gun was basically a long rectangle with a trigger group cut into one end and two long detachable bricks set into the other. The top brick had six openings at the end arrayed in two columns of three. Inside were row after row of flechettes held in little blocks of accelerant. The lower brick had one large hole, and a three specialized grenades sat nose to tail one after the other inside. The stud switched the trigger to the lower brick and he fired the shell straight into the wall in front of him. The round it the wall and stuck, there was no explosion, instead the payload Yanno had put into it leeched out and began eating away the concrete. A second later there was a man sized hole in the wall and Ajax ran straight through it. He kept going, using his momentum to power through two layers of dry wall and firing a second grenade to deal with the fourth wall.

He exited the building half way up the northern leg of the T and right next to one of the Raiders who was no doubt wondering from whence this dust covered power armored specter had come and what he’d done to deserve its wrath. They were close, too close for either man to bring his rifle around. The Raider balked. With the drugs pumping through his system Ajax needed nothing else. The left forearm casing of his armor was larger than the right, the four fingered cargo claw that it contained slid out over his hand and Ajax thrust it out with frightening speed. He grabbed the Raider by the head and gave the claw a quick twist along its axis, snapping the unarmored man’s neck.

The Raider across the street was now beginning to notice that the target had moved, and came around in time to see Ajax level his rifle at him and fire a burst of twelve flechettes into his chest with a loud bang. The second Raider dropped clutching at a ruined torso. The third had finally figured out what was going on and got to shooting at Ajax, but not before the delver had interposed the body in his left hand between him and the shooter. The corpse stuttered and Ajax threw it straight at the last Raider. To the man’s credit his did manage to get out of the way of the flung body, but for his troubles Ajax simply shot him in the face. This got Ajax to wondering where the ‘bot he’d picked up earlier had gone when it came through the wall of the building behind him in a shower of pulverized concrete and re-bar and struck him in the back with a huge hydraulic pincer.

The casual swat of that ‘bots claw took all 500 pounds of Ajax and threw him across the street. He smashed through a concrete wall and landed in a second floor apartment, crushing a glass coffee table beneath him as he came to a stop. Everything in his armor was beeping and screaming at him, plates dented and torn, gel layers overloaded and leaking out of ruptures in the seams. He rolled over, aside from some very large bruises and a broken leg he was fine. The drugs had worn off and the suit now injected painkillers instead of stimulants, the intravenous impellers slowed his blood flow. He grabbed the floor with his cargo claw and dragged himself across the mess of rubble and glass towards the hole he’d made upon his entry.

Out on the street the ‘bot was waiting for him. It was an industrial model, four legs ending in small track units held up its bulbous body, two pincers meant for lifting pallets or muscling around raw materials hung from its thorax, one still outstretched from where it had carelessly swatted Ajax. He noted over the still chirping alarms of his armor that the now dead Raiders had mounted a gun on the ‘bot’s back, and that it was in the process of trying to crouch on its hind legs so it could get the fixed cannon leveled at him. It pulled out into the street and finally got the angle it needed. Ajax’s armor tracked the line of the bore and told him as much. He tensed, and then heard a massive roar.

A rocket billowing white smoke streaked down the street and too the crouching ‘bot in the side. The explosion was fantastic; it shattered every window on the block and spayed pieces of the bought down the street. The smoke and flame was pushed away by the downwash of several rotor craft. A small attack chopper banked down and came in low along the street. A loudspeaker boomed, “THIS IS MOTORPOOL FLIGHT VALKYRIE 210, ANYONE STILL STANDING HAD BETTER DROP THEIR WEAPONS OR A I WILL CRATER THEIR ASS.” Ajax pulled himself into a sort of sitting slump and reached out into the noosphere. *210, this is Ajax, I think we’ve got them…*
Half an hour later they’d gotten everyone unstuck and back online and they were airborne back towards Motorpool. Carlos was sitting across from Ajax and Yanno as the latter was sealing rips in the former’s armor. Carlos cocked his head to the side and sighed “Why did we come down here again?” The question went unanswered, Ajax had his head back against the wall of the troop bay and the thump of the rotors had lulled him to sleep.

New Accra, equatorial Africa, The Space City.

The supernet BBS unDDIT with its countless contributing members to a great number of topical boards (Politics boards speculated to represent roughly half of the activity there, porn unaccounted for for various reasons) had a sorts of loss of a cause after the Supercorporation dissolved. The BBS used to be a beacon of free thought and a breeding ground for organized discontent, continuously suppressed by various corporates but staying around due to its highly decentralized, self-moderating and unidentifying design (and not to mention the porn), daring enough to collectively claim responsibility for a number of embarrassing to the Corporate incidents.

Activist communities discussed and recapped once suppressed history as well as identified and deconstructed misinformation, but eventually the seeds for discussion grew stale for some, ranging in the millions around the world.

"You know we're kind of stuck in the past, marveling at what we got done with that whole Corporate Age. We don't really have a big cause to fight for. No big threat for all of us.

I'm not saying we should make one. I'm saying we should challenge ourselves.

Let's get our race back to the moon and beyond. It'd be a jolly good time to live in."

Millions of upmods later a space research center is being constructed in equatorial Africa, backed by a global effort that trickles tiny pieces of resources en masse.

There's a number of tiny but immensely useful things occasionally being sent to Africa, which is by the way a relatively safe continent, from all parts of the world (even Antarctica). There's a lot of hostile ground in between. A lot of communities with their own problems.

Are you a bad enough Delver to personally deliver this artefact to the Star Effort HQ?

There are a number of global supernet BBSes which have come into the spotlight now that there's no huge corporate muscle keeping them underground. They're useful for getting porn, I mean, getting involved in larger operations up to global scale like the aforementioned space project.

The global forums tend to have localized boards, as well as true localized messaging systems of various kinds and designs. Local boards are useful for getting quick jobs and for gathering information (and porn).

I'd figure 4chan-style maximally anonymous boards have much more legacy than the newfangled strong-identity boards due to being slightly more resistant to corporate strong-arming by retaining no user-identifiable information. Naturally this would mean there'd no appointed mods either, so trolling and bad posts are filtered in several points, usually by the specialized reader software. Good reader software makes board strolls quick and painless, while lesser software merely hooks you up to the raw information, which is less than pleasant to crawl. It's an arms race between reader devs and trolls; the truly useful reader software is kept as secret as possible to prevent subversion.

    >>5179611
The messages are in various forms, but the bulk of the message is usually an excessive amount of metadata that is used to process the postings for various purposes. I do not elaborate what kind of metadata there is, but there's a lot of it. Reader software processes the metadata for searching and filtering purposes as well as turns the posting itself into a readable or viewable form.

BBS servers are fairly dumb to allow hosting them in hacked corporate machines. Reader software is also responsible for finding and verifying the message sources.

Technicalities aside you'll want the best Reader you can find: how else would you get your porn?

    >>5179555
And Reddit. This supernet BBS I envision is a hardy mix of distributed networking, 4chan and Reddit. It has survived total wipes from server space by data dumps in many, many hands: you can guess twice what got it back on the wires (hint: it's the porn)

There are other BBSes of various legitimacy and technical background, but the corporate-run ones are strangely quiet these days. There are dedicated My Little Pony roleplaying boards as well.

There are whole abandoned cities. A lot of them, really. Corporations tended to control construction, and they constructed things where they deemed favorable, not always where the workers and general populace desired to be. The aeon of strife at the end of the Age of Corporations left many city blocks unhabitable. These factors combined caused significant movements and many new cities were founded near the originals. Even more small villages were founded on previously off-limits areas.

Not everyone could move, even if they wanted to. Some corporate cities were pretty well placed and had largely intact infrastructure, mostly staying the same only less corporate. Some corporations did not fall, and continued to maintain vertically managed cities.

Vaults are what remains from corporate R&D departments. However, some vaults have been built for the sole purpose of archiving files and goods. Vaults usually begin from the campus, which may have desirable goods left for the taking.

Vaults are ideal bases of operation for illicit groups (such as Raiders) and corporate remnants for their secrecy and fatal security systems they have subverted. Security systems are usually subverted only to allow the group to get in and get out, but there are rumors and legends of vaults that seem to have human-operated and continuously maintained security.

There are also traps as part of security and as tools of past Delver groups, left behind potentially years ago. It's as if those ancient board games have come to life. Dungeons&Dragons, anyone? Yeah, I know 53th edition sucks. Corporate chocolate, so sweet but so devoid of depth.

The Atlantis Project is, or perhaps was, a undersea research facility, that was modified into a bomb shelter during the build up of the final events of the last age. Situated on the ocean shelf, just off the South China Sea, the Atlantis Project was built to research and conduct experiments based on the possibility of generating power from undersea geothermal vent and fault lines. Built as a sprawling, tube connected facility, Atlantis was built on a number of fault lines, using the power of the superheated water in the area to power it's own reactor. Though not originally conceived as such, Atlantis worked wonderfully as a self-sufficient bomb shelter, and quickly shifted over to a forgotten colony on the bottom of the sea.

Someone in the last thread mentioned that there should me some Utopian/Dystopian groups running around in a game called Nutopia. So... yeah.

    >>5182056

Until found by the residents of Babel in a deep sea dive, Atlantis proved quite resistant to the shifting values in the world above the sea. Atlantis is one of the few places in the world where the rule of the cooperations still remain somewhat in power. Unlike many parts of of the world, most of the people who worked on and lived at the Atlantis Project wanted to be there, with spots being quite competitive. Many highly driven, highly talented individuals were assigned to the undersea lab. And with space and living conditions at a premium, robotic servants and workers filled the need for cheap, manual labor. This means that, while well aware of the shifting world above, the morals and ideals of the ruling caste of the past still greatly influence modern day Atlantis.

This puts the tenuous agreements of with Babel at an interesting position. Babel, colonized by hard living, freedom loving, survivalist types, finds it's not entirely sure how to act with the much more cool, calculating Atlantis researchers. As a general populous, the Atlantian researchers are logical and intelligent, driven to believe that they have calculated the best way to survive in this world. They have found that in the circumstances forced upon them by being abandoned by the upper world, there must be leaders and followers, and all must be content with their role.

he position of castes and roles is perhaps the most noted trait of the Atlantian researchers. Born from specially chosen brood mothers, they are raised and taught by the these brood mothers from a young age in communal, school-like families. At the age of ten, they undergo a lengthy series of increasingly rigorous testing, from which the children's strengths, weaknesses, and aptitudes are determined. At the age of eleven, they are assigned a caste and a role, which they will work and perfect for the rest of their live. They are given to a family of that caste, and it is expected that the foster parents will raise and teach their young charge how to be the best that they can be at their task.

Those who become injured or otherwise will not or cannot do their assigned role undergo a period of 'counciling', which works in many ways as a form of reconditioning, in an effort to find a new role for an individual. If this cannot be done, the ultimate punishment for Atlantis is Exile. A thorough mind-wipe, designed to protect research and other company secrets, followed by banishment from the community. They are given simple survival gear, taken to the surface, and left floating in the middle of the ocean on a raft, to let fate decide their if their role should be to live or die.

    >>5182105

This has worked well for a time, and a couple of generations have come and gone in this caste system to stratify it into an institution. The meeting of Babel has shaken things up some, though, with the Department Heads of each caste on Atlantis beginning to notice small, subtle shifts in their populous. The people of Atlantis are slowly starting to wake their emotions back up, and a moment of truth is quickly coming their way. Many are uncomfortable and afraid of these new, unknown emotions, and dive deeper into their work. Others however... Have left the colony as Exiles have increased in number. A day of reckoning is coming, perhaps, and the people will not be insulated from the outside world forever, and it will be left to the researchers to make the same choice that they have been trying to avoid making all these years...

Well, fine. I'll just answer that one myself. *laugh*

Babylonian divers have dredged up a number of interesting finds from the ocean's floor, prompting a steady stream of Delvers, pirates, and other gold diggers. Diving in the deep depths are not without it's own dangers, however. Rival divers can get pretty intense, with and with many upgrades in dive suit tech, battles can become just as hectic and adrenaline filled as on the surface. Though many conventional weapons are blunted by the relatively thick waves, others such as rail guns and many explosion based weapon's still keep much of their edge. In addition, many times combatants will have an uplink with their home ships, who may themselves be engaged on the surface. Calling in a 'torpedo strike' from above can be a brutally effective way to end battles quickly and decisive. Watch out fighting it out around Atlantian controlled territories, however. They view themselves as having first claim on sites, and are most of the time better armed, trained, and less willing to hold back to defend their territory.

Not to mention the native creatures, also. Many have developed a taste for human flesh, and will quickly pounce on unsuspecting divers who stray to far from the pack. Having learned the tendencies of their prey, many native creatures such as sharks have learned how to hunt humans, even with their weapons. Others have been changed by the world, however. Nanomachines, genetic experiments, and even radiation has played it's role, changing many creatures to things quite different from the ages past. Some have been modified to carry ranged weapons, tracking by sonar and the electrical pulses of equipment. Other have developed thick scales or incredible crushing tails, able to shrug off ship cannon rounds and crack smaller craft with a couple of well placed strikes. And still others have simply increased intellectual facilities, making for truly cunning foes in enclosed wreckage.

Plus I was kinda alternating between Madagascar being Moreau's island in a functional manner, or being fully of totally fuckin' feral genemods instead. I opted for the former, because feral genemods aren't exactly much of a challenge - so they'd make for a poor story hook and "zombies with fur overrun megacorp" just sounds silly. Even Umbrella made shit more advanced.

But on the other hand I feel this comes off as kinda weak compared to BAR FULLA SENTIENT TANKS. Oh well, I gave my best shot.

Now, genemods are everywhere. The shit sold, so why not? There were all sorts of companies researching and producing that shit, raking in the cash.

But the best? Moreau Research Incorporated. They thought they were clever with that name and their location for their headquarters being on an Island. Of course, there were other reasons - Madagascar held 5% of all life on Earth and 80% of *that* could be found nowhere else. Where better to fuck with genetics, right? You get good genestock, a nice under-developed island nation - it's a perfect work and vacation spot. Fuckers.

Now MRI was very good at what it did. Made mods for anything biological you could think of. You want super strength? They had it. Eyes like a hawk? Done. Maybe you were big into fantasy stuff and wanted to be like an Ork or and Elf or Dwarf or what-the-fuck ever? They had that. Wanted to get in touch with your wild side? Sure, they had that - they *specialized* in that. You could name the weirdest, most obscure animal and they could splice you to look like it.Their shit was stable too - even in the beginning when a mod might be faulty and your muscles spasm randomly or your fancy new fangs are brittle as shit. MRI's stuff worked like it said it would. Of course, it was also more expensive.

But that's the Old World. In the new world - our 'Nutopia' as some have come to call it - Madagascar's a bit different. OK, a lot different. There's a lot of genemods. A *lot.* Most folk are genemodded in some way or another. Like the Isle of Doctor Moreau, but I guess that's the final bit of that terrible joke MRI tried to make playing itself out, eh? Some are former MRI employees, others; those who bought their mods from MRI or the descendants of those folk. Some were MRI products that were due to be released - and their offspring, naturally. Another subset traveled there. Wanted to be with others like them. Of course, I bet the kick ass beaches didn't hurt that decision. Fuckers.

When the Reclamation War came they tore MRI and the various other smaller corps on Madagascar a new one - and stole everything MRI had made or was in the process of making that they could try and grab without dying horribly. There were some mishaps, naturally, as they misjudged that. Madagascar's wildlife is a bit more ..interesting now. MRI managed to remake itself some dinosaurs, some man-eating venus flytraps, some Kudzu vines that have a tensile strength to make steel cable look like a string of yard, and a variety of diseases, including a modified rabies. Modified in that they decreased the time between infection and homicidal rage and cut out the eventual death as well as the inability to drink water.

The ecology's understandably a bit chaotic now, and you might run into someone - or a mob of someone's - infected with the modified rabies virus out in the wild. Thankfully it only effects humans and genemods. The Island would have to be written off entirely if not.

Like us though, over all it kinda worked out. Lots died, the ecology got kinda fucked, but we won and we were still breathing, which had to count for something. Madagascar's settled into a variety of small settlements, and they vary from small farming villages to Settlements near MRI's HQ and satellite facilities, providing (for a price, naturally) for Delvers that try and steal the most desperately guarded of MRI's secrets. Of course, that means getting pass ancient security 'bots, maddened mercs and titantic biological monstrosities that shrug off 30mm rounds and regenerate a 15 foot limb in under a half hour. Not to mention the ones that are like blobs, snatching up careless delvers and incorporating them into themselves - or digesting them. Those things don't go down easy either. Nothing short of burning them to ash seems to work.

Of course, there's always mundane dangers. Not everyone's nice normally, and you can't really expect better from someone with tiger blood in his veins. There's plenty of raiders on Madagascar. Some of them are pretty traditional - get loot, by any means. If they give up, they'll take their plunder and go, kill anyone who resists, that sort. Some though, some seem like they just want to kill everyone. Sometimes they don't even take the loot. Or the don't leave any bodies. Sometimes someone finds a gnawed bone or two. I shudder to think of the implications.

But yeah, go ahead and take your trip to Madagascar, to Moreau's Island. Watch our for the fuckin' lions, tigers and bears as well as the dinosaurs they're riding.

What is the state of governments currently, Fluff? They've been mentioned, but so far the focus is freestates. Well, my original thinking is that these settlements of the original rebels would be the norm. We've also got some dystopia/utopias around. Two other systems talked about were the Unincorporated states, countries that just never switched over to corporate rule (I'm thinking Australia and China could be some of these) where a lot of people went ACE, mostly those who didn't participate in the revolution and are perfectly fine with government rule.

Then you've got Savages, places like Afghanistan, central Africa, the Gobi desert and the deep Amazon jungles that never even got wired. There's an active delver effort to help these areas out and bring them up to speed if they want it, discussed towards the end of the third thread.

Vec stood on the side of the ship, watching as they slowly approached the massive port in front of him. The structure stretched for miles, fading into the distance on both sides of the ship. They were approaching from the east, and were headed for Starboard Dock Number 119. Approaching Babel, the City of Tides, was always a special moment for him, every time he came. From here, he couldn't see much of the structure of Babel underneath; there were hab-blocks and warehouses built off the study frame, and innumerable masts, antenna, and sat dishes disrupting the view too far past the artificial shore built onto the side of the former tower. The water was crystal clear, and he could see the dark reflections of the rail pods, attached to the bottom of Babel and working as it's primary transit, shipping, an currier service. Off in the distance, a twin winged jet was leaping into the sky; from his position, he thought it was coming off the Washington, one of the many permanently docked, heavily modified aircraft carriers dredged from the bottom of the ocean and given a new life as functional airstrips.

Pulling into port, Vec paused just a moment before leaping onto the dock. Waving goodbye to the captain, he took off down the dock, traveling sack thrown over one shoulder. He was just passing through Babel, this trip, but he thought to wander and pick up some souvenirs before moving on. His daughter had asked for one, and he wasn't going to disappoint.

Heading down the main strip, he smelled the strange combination of smells that belonged to Babel alone. Spicy food from the Asian north, the odor of a small herd of bellowing creatures from the African continent, and blasts of ozone coming from a bar to his left. And above all, the pervasive smell of salt, always and everywhere on this floating bazaar. One got used to it, though he had heard of genemods who couldn't stand it, and spent a pretty penny on the quickest flight out, and back to land. He loved it, though; they said sailing got into your bones, the salt ingrained in your skin and the spray embedded in your hair. He imagined ancient pirates, from the ages of lore, and smiled, thinking that perhaps that had stumbled onto nirvana, decades before it would be attempted and failed.

He spotted a shop that seemed familiar, but he could have sworn it to be further up-spier. Curious, he ducked into the low door, brushing aside a curtain of strung beads. Eyes adjusting to the dim light, he noted a long desk, behind it a veritable trove of interesting things. He paused a moment, trying to decide where the shop keep had acquired a solar panel off a satellite. He was abruptly broken out of his revere when a large, cybernetic man poked his head out of a door to the back. He smiled when he saw a customer, and emerged, his prosthetic eyes gleaming in the light. “How can I help ya, lad?”

Vec stumbled for a moment, surprised such a large man could fit in a shop like this. “Yes, I... This is Hannagin's, right? What's it doing so far down spier?” He placed his rucksack at his feet, leaning on the doorway.

The large nodded, and picked up an crystalline orb of the desk. He began to polish it with a cloth and answered. “Yes, this is Hannagin's. It sounds like you know the old place. We've expanded, and set up a couple more shops down this end. If you know the Miss...”, he leaned in, a big smile on his face. “...I can hook you up with a discount. She'll know, and you'll know, if you're lying, though.” He sat on the ground, polishing the orb, smiling through his teeth.

I'm sure she'll remember...” Leaning forward on the desk, he pointed over the big man's shoulder. “How's that FOS scanner over your shoulder holding up...?”

Coming out half an hour later, Vec smiled, with a reasonably new 'net plug under one arm. It was shiny, at least, and he was sure his little jewel would be able to polish it up to working condition. He wandered down the shore, feeling the swaying of Babel under his feet. It was remarked that the City of Tides aways moved underfoot, so that even when you were off ship you would never loose your sea legs. He felt the thrum of another rail pod shoot by under foot, leaving churn of bubbly in it's wake off the side of the shore. He stopped, however, when he noticed there was a large, overly muscled man standing in his way. The way he was looking at Vec had him on edge. He gently put his bag down, placing the new 'net plug on top. Working his shoulder, he barely had time to stand before the man was on top of him.

Diving low, Vec managed to slip to the side, drawing the attacker away from his things. The hulking mass twisted, dragging it's enormous bulk around to come back for another go. He was quick, and much faster then Vec's initial estimate would have given him credit for. Vec leapt back, his lanky body tipping back into a handstand for a moment before he stood upright. Pulling his long, hooked kukri from it's sheath on his back, he flipped it up and warded off a quick punch from his attacker. Seeing an opening, the smaller man pounced, blade low and level with the rough shore below him. He struck twice, lighting quick, scoring a pair of long slashes down the man's side. The muscled mass roared in pain, punching past the warding blade and grabbing Vec by the arm. He brought the smaller man up to eye level, and blasted him twice, causing Vec's right eye to blast into white light and his head to flare in pain. He thought he could hear a bell...

Shaking his head to clear it, Vec knew he couldn't keep this up much longer, and had to end things before things got worse. Cocking his head to the side, he whispered the access code to his combat computer implant, and watched as a faint red veil dropped over the world around him. A rolling list of text and commands passed his vision, and the grip on his knife tightened. He booted into his program just as the giant went for a third blow, this time aimed at his throat.

Vec twisted, feeling his arm pop and a flurry of information filled his vision. It was enough to avoid the blow, feeling it slam roughly into his blade arm and cause another snow filled wall of text to fill his sight. Blinking, he cleared his sight, causing the information to retreat to a small box in the bottom left of his world. Noting that he had dropped his blade from the last blow, he brought his free arm up, bunched up his hand, and stabbed the larger man directly in the eye.

The bellow of pain was rather satisfying.

    Brusselsphere

An enormous conglomeration of geodesic domes covering about 70% of former Belgium, Luxemburg and the Netherlands, Brusselsphere was one of the most spectacular, most bombastic corporate projects to ever come to fruition. A megacity in which the weather was controlled precisely by a regulatory system, ensuring the best climate conditions on the globe. During the Fall, eco-terrorist sabotage brought down the climate control AI, baking or freezing several domes until they were stopped. Those areas are still cooling down, and Delvers are advised to stay away from the hostile desert and jungle conditions.

Brusselsphere used to be the corporate-government capital of Europe, and together with Londons Prime, 2, 3, and 4 it formed the hub of the great financial networks that spanned the globe and projected corporate power. Most of the corp headquarters buildings still stand, looted and gutted from the Fall times, but rumours have it that there are still undelved vaults and secret bunkers under the city. The old EUSEC defense system may still be active, which could explain the periodic appearance of security drones, armed and attacking anything that moves.
