Gather round, children, and I will tell you a tale of a greedy man who gave us all a great gift.
"This is the story of a time long ago, when the ancient gods were petty and cruel. They warred with each other constantly, and many mortals suffered and died in their name, or as collateral damage. One man, a necromantic scholar and hermit, grew furious. While the constant supernatural battles provided him a surplus of unskilled labor, in the form of zombies, it decimated the local economies when all the skilled farmers, metalworkers, and herbalists in the area had been turned to ash. Delving into necromantic lore, this man, one Luther Hapscomb, desperately sought a way to protect the mortals he needed to maintain his standard of living. After a particularly brutal battle between demigods, Luther left his hovel to scavenge what he could. He found a divine lieutenant, a demigod named Thorn, wounded and unconscious. Never one to look a gift horse in the mouth, Luther immediately fell upon the senseless demigod and, though the might of his magics, bound Thorn's soul into a gem. He re-animated a small cluster of zombies to carry Thorn's corpse back to his hovel to work unimpeded."
