Your party encounters a group of seemingly very young...monsters...Playing some sort of game involving strangely shaped dice and paper with lots of text and numbers on it.

"Hey! You're playing Clerks&Offices? Dude, I love that game. Pity all this adventuring shit eats my gaming time so much." Then I'd look at the sheets of the still stunned gamers " Hey, cool Bussinessman you have there. You probably want to put a couple points more in Charisma next level up, though, and pick Wit of the Trade and Doubletalk. See, if you read their rules, you'll notice there's no actual cap, so you can get people to buy your stuff at over 300% their normal price"

Yes, my current character would *totally* be a complete powergamer if he knew what roleplaying games are.

No, I can't argue with you there. I hate the people who start off at higher levels. I also hate the people who come on /tg/ and bitch constantly about LOL ROLLPLAYIN. The new edition has plenty of options available for blue collar stuff, and I really like what they did with the part time work skills. Next character I play is going to specialize in part time work. I couldn't do that effectively in the old edition.

I must say, I do like how they removed the falling for law enforcement. I always hate the "Lol ur cop is fired." the DM's always did.

    >>4502166
I still think they should have used the optional Internal Investigations charts from Monty Chef's Uncovered Bureaucracy, but it's a good start.

While I'm not happy with the new edition, I understand why they made the changes they did and accept that this is the direction the game is going. I would have taken white-collars in a different direction, personally, but to each their own. My old Embezzler concept still works and is still fun to play, so I'll live with it.
    >> The Laughing Man !AWEsomEEEE!!CwndNHTjLMy 05/08/09(Fri)14:18 No.4502201
    >>4502166
Just do what I did: tell the DM that a cop can't be MADE to fall.

A cop falls because he's lost sight of the law, not because his Chief Officer decided to say LOL DRUGS and LOL BABIES DIE.

A cop falls because he willingly decides to turn on everything he believes in, but even if there is a tiny pitiful spark of duty, he cannot truly fall. Becuase that spark can be fanned into a roaring inferno deep within his soul, duty, justice, and honor pouring forth from every action he makes. But only the cop can extinguish that spark, and only when he has truly, TRULY, lost all hope.

I hated Daily Masters who did that to me, so I had a speech prepared. Won't stop me from playing cops then, won't stop me from playing them now.

Rolling a janitor now, the problem is that with the buffs the paychecks for the first 1-30ish levels are so far above the other classes it's too easy to be sufficiant this early on giving you an unfair advantage. The way they balanced this with poor level scaling was deffinatly not the right move anyway. Especialy when you see that consultant ten levels below you pulling in twice as much from 50ish onwards. We just ended up homebrewing our own to deal with the problem, sorta crossed the tech support's scaling and the electricians billing system, (not as believable but much more fun to play as)

Likewise, I realize that there are a lot of changes in the new edition that some people might not be happy with, namely with a feel of Place of People MMO. But the new edition has some new stuff. I can't wait to give some of the new classes a try. Mechanic seems awesome. Insurance salesman seem kind of funky too.
    >> Adeptus Munitorum Magus O'Grady 05/08/09(Fri)14:30 No.4502267
    >>4502258
Yeah, I was looking at mechanic, but I think Tech Support is going to dominate this edition, just like Managers did last edition. Tech Support just has too many buff/debuff options and utility skills that make a lot of other classes obsolete, or at least second-rate.
    >> Anonymous 05/08/09(Fri)14:32 No.4502278
    >>4502219

From 1-30'sh as a janitor has you doing a lot of boring ass side quests. Though it does give you some interesting roleplaying opportunities even if the followers you tend to have are mostly young...

Jantor's real strength comes from multi-classing.
Janitor/Clerk:Mail/Cook. The time it takes is intensive, but you become even more powerful then the overpowered CEO's through subterfuge and sabotage.

If you've never played a marketing class before do not go for salesman. the door to door stuff at early levels is a bitch to get a hang of and chances are if you don't know what you're doing you'll go down really fast. I suggest that if you work in an office in your current game, try and take a few ranks in telemarketing if you can spare them.

At least with one Manager you can get a lot accopmlished. You can take the archetype party of Manager, Tech Support, Pencil Pusher, Janitor, and maybe even toss in an Intern. But try playing as a party of Managers. If you do it right, everyone gets buffed high enough to take on CEOs. Most fun I've ever had in a campaign.
"I make a roll for corporate takeover."
    "The DC is 50."
"Okay, after everything, from the interns working late, to the fax machine I fixed....*adding numbers* I got a 93. And I rolled a 2."
    "......god dammit."

    >>4502292
Oh, I know. But I'm talking about taking ONLY part time skills. Doing the bike messenger for quick cash early on, then taking the office politics skill ranks, then apprenticing in electrician and tech support. It's kind of cherry picking, but I wanted to roleplay it out as Kentaro from Golden Boy. That series was awesome.
    >> Adeptus Munitorum Magus O'Grady 05/08/09(Fri)14:42 No.4502342
    >>4502299
Yeah, but tech support can just use their 'write spread sheet' application to duplicate the abilities of most Managers, Accountants, and Clerks. It costs them a little XP to do, but with four Tech Support guys working together, you can build an entire company from scratch in a week and start acquiring competitors immediately. I'm telling you, the Tech Support is WAY overpowered. Especially when they multiclass into Cracker so they can simultaneously use Incite Audit and Plant Digital Evidence on their opponents at will. It's a broken combo, especially since most of the buffs for one class's skills affect the other as well. The IT tree is all about synergy, dude. It can get beefy if you know how to work the numbers right.

    >>4502342
Yeah, but we thought the idea of 4 managers taking over a company that was already built was funnier. One guy did multiclass into tech support and took the IT route so we could do crazy shit like that. I took the role of spokesman, since I took all the public speaking roles. The media toppled in the wake of my awesome presence.

Oh right, I guess in the company I was DMing it was a bit different. All my players wanted to be bike messengers so they did a bike messenger company. They filled all the necessary roles (nominally) with part time work skills and a few temps. They never really had to face down any CEOs because in that setting the tough encounters are all non-office.

While I do agree that it is possible to do this I wouldn't recommend it, Second you hit international your ass is grass. theory tested it. It's doable without much difference until you have to make international stratigic alliances and unless you have a proper manager this is damn near imposible, (talking natural 20s here) tech support charisma is not nearly high enough.

    Optimal 5 man setup IMO
    -Manager
    -Accountant/Engineer
    -Tech support
-Marketing proffesion (Any will do but 1 is essential)
-3rd party Consultant, (so usefull when done right, Protip: Never use him on your own party)

This brings up the argument of making effective characters =/= min maxing. I make it a point to roleplay all characters I make. We're talking about a fantastic world where I can be a bike courier, a cop, a market consultant, a dishwasher, hell, I'll even play as an intern. The point is, this is a fantastic world that we're being a part of. I can't do this as a lowly dragon keeper. I love playing P&P with some members of my clan. And as long as we have FUN with it, and enjoy ourselves, that should be all that matters. A friend of mine, we'll call him Gronk, because I know he comes on here, is treasurer to his chieftain. He loves playing janitors. But because he works with numbers all day, he can't help but get into the dynamics of the game. He enoys it, and we enjoy having a clean work environment and fresh coffee. He took some minor talents to do a little bit of everything around the office.

Europe's the only good campaign, no ULTRAMASSIVE supercorps with practically government backing, plus you get the incredibly cheap labour from Eastern Europe. Ireland's the best place though, especially if your DM's all "LOL U START AT LEVEL 1 UNEMPLOYED", just be all "do you take sterling", massive forgery bonus, plus laundering's easier there.

Yes, at the higher levels they were, but you had to struggle up to a decent level to get those hack powers. A level 1 unemployed European could easily survive and gain levels, but a level 1 American had to earn his way up to being able to use those insane business powers like "offshore tax shelter" or "dotcom stock bubble."

Hey, this seems like the right thread. (What is with /bis/ being nothing but Stock: the Exchange & Manufacturing 40K threads right now?)

My DM is starting a level 3 campaign starting in the Canada setting. (I know... I know... Canada is for kids who to play using both American & European set skills). What do you think of this build?

    Account Manager
    Work Ethic: 14
    Flexibility: 10
    Durability: 18
    Intelligence: 12
    Wisdom: 8
    Charisma: 16

    At Wills:
    -Smoke Break
    -E-mail Forward

    Per Meeting:
    -Diligent Note Taking
    -Iron Bladder

    Daily:
    -Business Lunch
    -Conference Call

I know everyone uses Work Ethic as a dump stat, but if I pump it to 16, by level 8 I can take the "Reliable" feat. I think the bonus to defense versus blame is worth it.

I'm thinking about replacing Diligent Note Taking with Good Memory, but then I'd have to increase Int for a good bonus, and that doesn't really fit this build.

You know, I really don't like some of the abilities that they have in this game. The blue-collar and white-collar balance is just too finely tuned, and really grates my high-fantasy sensibilities.

In the real world, dragons and kings always win, while the laborers and shit-farmers get nothing, so why should it be any different here? I want to get back to a more realistic setting that simulates real economy, none of this government safety-net or nanny state crap. Hell, did you notice that out of all of the more than 100 countries, only 30 something are monarchies? And they are mostly some kind of 'constitutional monarchy' BS. Why would the nobles even put up with this shit?

Last time someone tried to overthrow the local baron over here, he hired a group of adventurers, and had the ring-leaders made brutal examples of. Why don't they just do that in P&P? This is why I play ASSRAPE instead - it's so much more realistic.
