There was a dream, and it didnt want to die by being ignored. So it let people dream and create their own world so it wandered into the dream so it would live. The first Alice was the Alice of Spade.. (Red Queen) The second was The Alice of Diamond (Mad Hatter) the third was the Alice of Clover (Caterpillar) and the fourth were the Alices of Heart (Tweedle Dee and Tweedle dum..)

/tg/ your characters are encountered by a dream that is going to die due to being forgotten. When your characters go to sleep, what do they dream about, what world do they create? Or there is only one Alice, and he/she is the world creator..and the players are stuck in that world dealing with the malicious Wonderland and the dream itself (Is the dream the Chesire cat? It is! He wants to live on forever.. so people never wake up) And thusly, how do you get out.. considering one of your teammates has made this dream world, and doesnt know really how to escape.. (Must they confront the queen?)

This was inspired by a flash currently up right now.

This is how they die, or are trapped... perhaps the Queen of hearts kills the sister..or the brother is just insane and kills her, and creates something new.

I love how the Mad Hatter is a singer, and makes EVIL NECROMANCY with his music. It seems the Red Queen is quite the villainess.

How bout we make a system? I can do a semi free form one really quick based on the video.

Ok Lets say you have some measure of influence in this world to reshape it as you want. So this "Glamor" can be spent to shape the world. Whatever you spend it for the DM causes to the world, You can only make singular changes, or corrections. You can not stack it on top of each other for the price of one glamor.

Now the glamor can be depleted, but you can gain it back by letting the world go to shit and it always does. For every slip you let happen you get glamor back, but you can't change this slip. The people start dieing and you let it slip, the people keep dieing until you are all alone in your dream world and are forgotten. This happens when you run out of glamor and the world finally gets it's hold on you.

Less of a campaign and more of a side game of taking a character through the prospect of being a god and playing it to it's horrible end. Maybe some expanding on this?

This is an interesting story... It's ambiguity lends it intreage and leaves so many things unawnsered. Notice that the dream cries as the first Alice carves her red path? And the corruption of the dream happens only after the dream leaves the image.

Ravenloft is comprised of realms separated by walls of mist.
Each realm is the prison of a Darklord, who is essentially a tragic hero, villain, or random guy who accidentally got the attention of the dark powers.
They get Ironic Hell'd, in that the Dark Powers give them what they wish for, but torment them endlessly.

    Examples would probably help.

I just figured Wonderland is a Ravenloft dread domain with the Dreadlord 'Chesire Cat' ..or five dread lords, (each 'alice' of wonderland) plus Chesire Cat (the true dream itself that never wants people to escape, or the Chesire cat is simply the Dark Powers) And when you dream you enter it. You are constantly tempted to do evil or strange things...
    >> Anonymous 04/08/09(Wed)22:49 No.4226879
    >>4226575
So... Lets see if I got this straight.
The first was a psychopath who got locked away because of her crimes.

She was drawn into the Wonderland by the dream(chesire cat, dark power) for her will, her temper, and her physical prowess. Very haughty, the Red Queen. Chesire decided she was so evil she would warp the forest around her, and imprison her there.

The second was an emo who killed himself inexplicably.

It appears he had sung songs that were not what they seemed, causing madness and warping his world around him. But he wore rose designs on his clothing, so the Red queen (lover of all roses..and always angry at roses not red..) possessed him and forced him to shoot himself. (Being a crazy necromancer he persisted it seems) They say that madness is like a flexible bullet.

The third was a slut who now lives horribly discontented in the perversion of her creation.

The third of course is the caterpillar, always confusing and misleading people. She made such the interesting world of lies, that no one can see it's true marker...except her. She can only see the truth, and it is sickening, thus she is eternally bored. (And the caterpillar always high on opium)

The fourth were twins who ???
The twins are tweedle dee and tweedle dum, technically. The boy is actually both tweedle dee and tweedle dum, for if you listen you note that they get close to the first alice (the red queen) trapsing through the forest... and either she -kills- the sister, or something happens where the brother kills her(more likely). Then, since he is absolutely fucking insane, having been a twin, he creates a duplicate of himself to wander Wonderland for eternity, never to awaken.

    Your welcome!
Yes, I was studying it carefully.. trying to piece together each little thing.

One more little note - since the rabbit is not technically shown, I have belief that the rabbit and the chesire cat are one and the same. The Chesire cat is the dream's will, and the rabbit is the dream's 'physical' embodiment..

    >>4226965
That makes sence, actually. Since the dreams will is to endure the cat is most fitting for it and the rabbit is what "leads" them further into the dream. The chesire is seen with the introduction of each character before fading away like a fall from grace... Alice of Spades makes it cry and is imprisoned, Alice of Diamonds is left and has no protection from the Alice of Spades, and the Alice of Clovers eventually seems to let down the chesire, and so leaves her to her twisted reality.

But disapointing it isn't the only way to find damnation. The Chesire never seemed displeased with the Alices of Heart or Alice of Diamonds (last seen smiling in both instances, where it is crying and frowning by the AoS and the AoC). Instead, pleased by their creations it seems to leave them to their own destruction through the Alice of Spades, where if they had kept its intreage it likely would have protected them.

I was actually thinking about doing this a while back, but I'm just learning how this all works and it isn't my turn to DM yet. Anyway, let me just bounce some ideas off with you all here in /tg/.

    So, they're all named Alice.
    Color/Name/Symboled Item/Class
    Red/"Bloody Alice"/Sword of Spades/Berzerker
    Blue/Alfonse Icen/Diamond Song/Bard
    Green/Queen Ecila/Scepter of Clubs/Noble and Necromancer
    Yellow/Alex and Elice/Heart Invitation/Sorcerer and Cleric maybe?

Anyway, the basic jist of the campaign would center around being hired by the now-dead parents of Alex and Elice to accompany them to their relatives house in a distant land as per their Will. Chartering a distinctly yellow boat, the party embarks on their quest. After disembarking, the boat either leaves or melts away for some reason, leaving the party standed on the island/continent.

At this point, you can make the nearby town as normal or as creepy as you'd like, but the castle inhabited by Queen Elice should be either feared or mysteriously 'brainwashed' from the populous despite looming in the distance. Perhaps part of the invitation would direct the part toward the castle in some way.

Inside the castle would be traps and illusions of all sorts, but in the dungeons would be "Bloody Alice", a trail of blood leading from the forest to the castle and into the dungeon. "Bloody Alice" is insane and inconsolable and worse yet, pitted against the party. Upon defeat, one of the objects of interest would be the sword which can be taken. However, this sword drives the user progressively insane and fills them with blood lust as it fells enemies.
    >> Anonymous 04/09/09(Thu)01:22 No.4228057
    >>4228040
Another room, perhaps a ballroom or the like, would house Alfonse Icen (and maybe some enemies waltzing), brainwashed and reanimated and will fly into a murderous rage at anyone interrupting his music. Same thing, the music drove him mad making him and those who heard it addicted to it and kill each other. Now he's risen and can sing all he wants. Con check anyone?

Queen is obviously the big bad, although it may be nice to note that her 'pure' soul is being entrapped in a mirror perhaps and that freeing her might give extra bonus karma points. Also, depending on who was holding the invitation for the longest (and getting some sort of conferred abilities) goes insane after some time.

    HOORAY FOR INSANITY CAMPAIGN.
    >> Anonymous 04/09/09(Thu)01:27 No.4228093
    >>4228057

Also, for those of you who are interested, there is more than one flash of this song. This is a song that was made through 'Vocaloid', a program to make music with synthetic (sampled really) voices, which I quite enjoy. It has its own characters...which you've just met through the flash.

Anyway, for clarification, the red Alice killed people, a lot of people, and had she not killed so many, the trail of blood that lead the local law enforcement to her forest hideout would not have been there.

Also, there's some debate but the Blue Alice was very popular for his music, and He was either murdered by a raving fan or friend or suicided under pressure (Kurt Cobain?)

    This. I like this.

However, seems that Diamond/Blue was the Bard/Necromancer type and not Clover. Clover is more of a Beguiler/Illusionist Specialist wizard.

The flash suggests blue was either shot by himself when the queen overtook him, outraged at he wearing a blue rose, or the Mad Hatter already within the dream shot him (the second flash on youtube.. but I like this first interpretation better)

I love the idea of the 'invitation' to the castle.. and it slowly driving people more and more mad (thusly incurring powers checks!)

I like best that they were all lead in by the rabbit in one way or another, being led into the dreamworld in one way or another. They are all trapped in there in some way. Chesire is the physical embodiment.

Red Queen is the big bad of the forest, berserker sword kudos for points, and The Hatter's 'shooting himself' is the best euphemism for insanity (Plus, Dirgesinger goodness). Young girl (Caterpillar) Is misleading, she has a large portion of the domain.. basically right under the red queen's nose. The tweedles are sort of a random encounter, but they could possibly be psuedo mist ferrymen.. even though the boy has a fake sister now from mind control of the Queen (I like creepy fake dream sister anyhow, over creepy fake dream brother).

With all the other crazy shit in Wonderland it's a wrap..

However what is the goal of the players in this world. I think there should be 3 types of endings.

Good End: The players free the alices souls from there damned existance and wonderland finally dies.
Neutral End: They escape the world sanity in tact however they still occasionally hear the calls of the wonderland in there dreams.
Bad End: The wonderland gains a new alice.

Sounds just fine. I like the neutral ending because it means you end up going back.

You'll have to destroy the dream somehow..but you'll never do so if you remember it and think about it..it's like THE GAME WHICH YOU JUST LOST.

Evil Ending: Kill all the Alices.. Brutalize the embodiments of the dream. As you deal the final blow, feeling your victory over this horrid corrupt world is at hand, you find yourself in a vast, empty space of blackness. You frown.. and become pale..realizing that if you do not have anyone to think about you.. you will die unless you get people to wander into you..

Thus the cycle repeats. DREADLORD STATUS. INCOMING GAME.

I actually have a 238 page pdf for a Wonderland setting that I pulled off the internets a year or so back. Haven't ever used it, so I dunno how well it would work, but if any anons are interested I can throw it up on rapidshare.

    They were all alices.
'Alice', in this terminology, is someone that got sucked into wonderland.
All of the four in this video got BAD ENDS, though.

I didn't read the whole thread but does any think that it would be interesting if all the people came there by accident but stayed by choice. And the place is held together by the Alices that live here. If the PC's kill all the Alices they realize they still can't get out and they themselves are keeping the world alive. They end up having to choices. Kill themselves and make sure no one has to endure this ever again or Become what they have destroyed ensuring immortality and the cost of their sanity. At least until the next set of Alices come along.

The game is based on the wanderings of a girl through dreamworlds, some more fucked-up than others, and it seems as it could fit within the campaign world, where Wonderland can leak through into some of the dreamworlds to lure people into its depths. Besides, it explains the purpose of those wandering beaked woman...things. They are not there to hunt people down, but quarantine areas and isolate those who endanger themselves by wandering too close to Wonderland, like where they swarm in the Red Hell Maze or other strange locales in that game.

OP Here, wow the thread lives! Awesome.

This is fuckwinawesome, thank you for posting this! I've been at work trying to figure out the stats for the Alice characters. I am quite pleased, I'll post them when I'm done.

Expect things like 'control plants' in relation to roses and thorny vines for Spade, along with scrying through roses. Aura of Madness (not unlike the Obyrith lords of the Fiendish Codex I, but they can turn it on/off) for Diamond and Clover(however hers will compliment her Beguiler/Illusionist abilities), and the twins.. well, the phantom sister is gonna be a scary mind creation so it'll do most of the hurting.

But who knows, perhaps the party will befriend one or more of the Alices.. all in all, they are the 'life' which Wonderland draws from to remain in place. If the PCs destroy an Alice, parts of Wonderland begin to unravel and shit starts going to hell.

OP Here, I'm reading through the Unsanity and the chessboard rules. *chinrub* The way I'm thinking of Wonderland, it has the chessboard system in a sense. If it's a Ravenloft domain then you are in Level 1 wonderland and can go up and down from there. But Level 1 is the sanest you are going to get once in there. Possibly you go in when you sleep, or if you are on the Prime you are led there.. makes it easier to control. Meanwhile if you plan on extending the game past Wonderland you can have the whole 'Reflection' of yourself fucking shit up when you were away and then deal with what occurs after you get out (if you do)

I have but not for a very, very long time. I need to replay it.. I am feeming. And about to go find a copy of it. Though I fear it will distract me from writing up the campaign now.

Thanks for the archive.. I'd hate to lose this.
I've decided that the Prime material IS 'Chessboard 0' in a sense, since it makes it all delightfully horrific. The descent into madness afterwards is fantastic. Unfortunately the PCs will always return to Wonderland once 'infected' with the 'disease' .. until they solve it or die within its borders. Probably a really good way to offshoot a campaign too if a few players are absent and you are aching to do something and not waste that night doing nothing.

    OP here.
Level 0(The Prime) in the DnD cosmology would be like Level 2 (from the pdf supplied earlier) With some elements of Chessboard level 3 normally. Chessboard level 3 is the 'normal' state of the Dread Realm, descending further. In the medieval realm, there are less levels and hitting the crazy is just a blink of an eye away, anyways.

Nah, they're all getting statted up.. but Spade will be a bloody Alice with a sword.. able to control thorny vines and scry through roses. She can also do that dryad tree-jump shit at will. She is made of party raep all by her lonesome.

Diamond will be a haggard man with a bleeding temple, hidden under his hat. Blood is crusted on his ears, and he always wears a sleepy, tired smile with a lazy far off look. His blue outfit has stains over the flowers in blood, so much so that they have turned red. He is encountered at the Tea party naturally, with his entourage of 'fans' (all really disguised undead followers who jump and dance for him..and enjoy his strange stories). The hat hides the bullet wound (victorian guns are messy) He often adjusts his hat, revealing the gaping hole especially when searching for things. He has the undead archetype, but aside from the wound doesnt seem it. His songs cause madness, though it is lovely people will need to save every round they hear it or take wisdom damage (much like an Allip). He'll be a Bard/Dirgesinger.. maybe a level or two of Wizard specialist necromancer if needed.

Clover, the dear Caterpillar will be linked from the Diamond encounter by an invitation to the castle in some way.. and they will have to traverse the woods once more and find her 'kingdom' along the way. People will need to make will saves to actively attack her, similar to Malcanthet's ability from Fiendish Codex 1, and have a couple nifty abilities to aid her enchanting. She will have card soldiers for guards, all Clovers.. as well as nameless people enthralled by her. Everyone loves her after all! The encounter should be very socially based, due to the whole 'everyone is charmed under my control teehee' aspect.

The twins (well, just the boy and his magic fake sister) will be encountered randomly, but if they can be befriended (it's up to you to figure out how! I plan on making good use of the Sigil of Mourning..) they can lead you to many places in Wonderland. Or they may be upset and just send you off.. who knows! Huge possibilities with this.

There will be rumors to the White Queen (read through the looking glass) with her encounter(s). Especially from the invitation that's given from the castle. The White Queen will of course just be another facet of the 'Wonderland dream' that wants to be heard. She constantly talks backwards and does things in reverse, like she is a mirror image. She might be a killable version of the dream, but taking her out could be very dangerous indeed. Traditionally, the White Queen tried to help Alice however..so it might be some strange sense of guilt from the dream for imprisoning the Alices, or even your party (depends on if you've really pissed the dream off).

At some point once out, the party needs to deal with this Red queen who constantly harries the party in the woods in some way shape or form. I expect them to run from her or die..or be subjected to a humiliating trial and punishment most benign. I may be nice, I may not be!

There's always chance to sink into deeper madness (down the rabbit hole we go!) in Wonderland and have many interesting events. Besides encountering the white rabbit (the DM's little helper to lure PCs..) or the Cat (for when you please the Dream) those are the primary, major events I have in store. And of course the various endings (or discontinuations thereof)

I'd take the general premise (the Silent Hill but more colorful and insane than rusty and creepy esque drag-you-in dream) and replace the suits/minor-arcana motif with a Through The Looking Glass style chess/mirrors theme. This is better for a campaign as well- instead of someone simply being chosen as the new Alice, you have to cross the board and defeat the reigning monarch to become the new King.

In JAGS wonderland terms it seems like whoever becomes the Alice is a drama-vortex around which all other beings fall into subordinate narrative niches (basically becoming like the big mads in the mid level chessboard).

However the Dream (the Cheshire Cat someone said?) seems to pervert the worlds that are created by these peoples' subconciousnesses...or maybe one's inner desires will do that normally.

After a certain point of perversion it goes too far and even if they still exist as a character (or even are still perfunctory centers of the universe ala Clover) they can no longer really function as the Alice, they have lost that human aspect and have to be replaced by the Dream in order for it to sustain itself.

Alice of Spade : Fighter/Barbarian/Frenzied Berserker + Special abilities "Red Queen" Control Plants(Vines and rose thorns) Scry (via roses in forest) Possession (Frenzied Berserker's 'inspire frenzy' ability) - Magical sword of Bloodlust

Alice of Diamond: Bard/Dirgesinger + Song of Madness (Wis Damage), Undead(Disguised) Followers, March Hare

Alice of Clover: Beguiler/Illusionist, Mad Beauty, Seductive Gaze, Reflect Enchantment. Throng of mindless charmed followers who get angry if you disagree with her.

Alices of Heart : Boy - Int/Dex Rogue. Girl - Str/Cha Rogue(Monk?). Planeswalker type, able to open doors, every twin feat possible (Vexing flanker, etc) Can be a friend or foe. Boy carries an amulet that never lets him move on with his grief, cannot mentally heal but this allows him to manifest his sister as well as a twisted version. They can always teleport towards each other if separated, and gain bonuses merely by being within 10 feet of each other on many things (like auto aid another)

White Rabbit: The insidious nature of the dream needing to lure souls in to power it. Physical embodiment that can manifest in the Prime material plane. It must draw upon more and more people or it will be forgotten, as its captured, dehumanized 'Alices' no longer give it any sustenance. They belong to Wonderland, ergo the dream.

Cheshire Cat: Inner representation of the dream, often comes off as well meaning and helpful, wanting the new Alices to keep their humanity as long as possible. He will guide adventurers through Wonderland through his riddles, and may even decide to help some escape in a cryptic fashion. Hates the Red Queen, disappointed by the other ex-Alices. The Red Queen is strong, so the dream cannot silence her..and thus she constantly claims weaker would-be Alices that the dream can draw power off of.

I think there should be a system were there is physical damage and mental damage
Every creature in the world does physical and its standard death mechanic.
Then there is sanity damage (which is eaqual to your hp damage) which is something your character does to him/herself and is very difficult to repair. Once your sanity reachs zero thats it you have become an Alice (what will happen from this will depend on if the dream looks favorably on you) and your only hope is that your party members succeed in killing the dream.

This video has English subtitles in the song that provide a much clearer and what seems to be a more precise translation.

So, I'm going to put this in my normal D&D campaign as a side quest thusly:

They are sent to what they've been told is a dungeon, hidden in a garden deep in the woods. The garden turns out to be wonderland, where the sun is always setting, the flowers are always in bloom, everyone is always friendly, and everything the characters ever wanted is waiting for them: the wizard finds a vast library, the paladin finds an order of knights that fight against the very same injustices, the rogue finds more oblivious wealthy men than she could ever imagine.

There are a few distinct oddities: while there appears to be no crime, there is a prison, which no one is allowed to go near. There is a statue in the center of town of a musician, with flowers all around its base, and the residents still look at it longingly. And finally, there is a queen who is stunningly beautiful, always smiling, but still manages to come off as very hostile.
    >> Anonymous 04/10/09(Fri)01:44 No.4238685
    >>4238673
    Continue.
    >> Anonymous 04/10/09(Fri)01:58 No.4238812
    >>4238673

When the party asks to leave, they are discouraged and entreated to stay. The more vehement the party gets, the more insistent the residents get (except the queen). If they go back to where they entered, they will find no passage back. The only way they may leave is if they get their hands on the macguffin that they came for in the first place: the queen's scepter.

Now what's going on here, and what does it have to do with the linked video? The first Alice was a fighter clad in red. She cut a swathe 'cross the countryside slaying monsters to her heart's content. But there was no content in her heart. She continued to battle harder and larger enemies, ones that threatened to tear wonderland apart. Her battles frequently ravaged the towns and cities, and occasionally even wore at the fabric of this little dimension. Wonderland could abide her no longer, and locked her away in the prison, alive and alone forever.

Then there was the rest of her party, the Blue Bard and the Green Rogue. The Bard sang beautiful songs that brought merriment to all of wonderland's creatures and brought him any service desired (and he desired many services). The Rogue too charmed the hearts of wonderland, with her beauty and beguiling tongue, but while the Bard saw his popularity as a means to an end, the Rogue's sole desire was to be the most popular, the center of attention, the object of desire. Though wonderland loved her too, she grew jealous and killed him. Straight between the eyes with a crossbow bolt.

So, to get the neutral ending, the Yellow party (the PCs) must destroy the original Alice party. The Red Fighter rages in her prison, and has thirsted for blood for centuries. The Blue Bard does not rest in peace, and if the party calls him out, his casket will rise to fight him, screaming dirges of destruction until they break through his coffin and destroy his undead form. Finally, the Green Rogue will fight alongside her guard, using not only her stealth and sniping, but supernatural mind control. With all three dead, the citizens of wonderland will rush to the party in an attempt to detain them, but the party now has the macguffin to get them out of here. Thus earning the neutral ending: they escape wonderland, but dream (sweet dreams) of it every night.

Bad end: besides the obvious death or staying forever, if the party escapes without killing one or all of the Alices, they will have nightmares every night of those still trapped there.

Good end: kill the dream permanently. The smiling sun has always been in the same place in the sky the whole time. If the party continually walks in that direction, they will reach the top of the mountain range and hit the skybox, but upon seeing the sun up close, they'll realize it is the heart of this dream. There will be enemies along the way, to be sure, and the sun/heart will launch all sort of attacks itself, but once they have defeated it, the sun/heart will coalesce into a gem the size of your hand. This may either be destroyed or wielded as a sentient artifact.

I still think the Red Queen should be a human shaped mass of blood coloured thorns. Once the party beats her, the thorns should fall away, revealing the shredded body of the Queen.

The suit of thorns gave her monstrous power and sustained her life in exchange for tearing her body and mind apart. Now that they've destroyed it, she dies with a smile on her face, glad that the agony has finally ended.

Awesome things. +[Concordance] to Bluff and Intimidate, +[Concordance] to all powers and rituals with the Illusion keyword, and as long as you're on its good side, a daily power to move any sleeping creature into the demiplane inside the Dreamheart. Charisma vs. Will, and the target stays in the Dreamheart for a number of days equal to the difference from your Charisma check to his Will (with a critical meaning the target is permanently inside the Dreamheart). If you're on its bad side, there is a 10% chance every night that you sleep that a random monster (of level = [character level] - 3 + 1d6) will appear in the room with you and attack the party.

    Starting score 5 (normal).
    Owner gains a level: +1d10
Owner uses a power with the Illusion keyword (1/day) +2
Owner succeeds on a Bluff check (1/day) +1
Owner goes a day without lying to anyone -1
    Owner speaks against someone's idealism (1/day) -2

I prefer to think of the Cheshire Cat as a being that has adapted perfectly to its new environment of madness rather than being the dream itself.

It says "We're all mad here." not "Look at you Alice, a pathetic creature of meat and bone..." etc.

    >> Anonymous 04/10/09(Fri)15:52 No.4243376
Well, fuck it, my take on it.

There is a single Wonderland, but potentially infinite "instances" of it. Those instances have the same "base" characters (Mad Hatter, March Hare, Queen of Hearts etc.) each representing aspects of human mentality, plus groups of "adventurers" physically or mentally close to each other. All such adventurers ("Alices", perhaps. ) are either insane or dying in the real world, the Wonderland being the last escape of the sane mind against being lost in madness or death. It is possible to travel between seperate instances of the Wonderland using mental links, as most humans are connected in one way or another.

Once a person is there, there exists two possibilities. He can turn into a permanent part of the dream, losing bits of his personality as a prominent characteristic takes over, as with our unfortunate group (the red one got taken over by bloodlust, green by the desire to be liked. ) As such, a new Alice could face his long-dead love in the Wonderland, with a charming face but a personality twisted beyond recognition by the dream. Though, not all such ex-Alices are unpleasant, just as how Wonderland denizens can be pleasant.

The other is not giving in to the dream and successfully escaping while fighting former Alices and more bloodthirsty or just plain insane of the denizens, perhaps in a way described in >>4238982 . Then the character in question makes a miraculous recovery and wakes up, his adventures nothing more than a bizarre, blurry dream, though his tales will still be told in his instance of the Wonderland.

I mean Alice in Sexland is decent and all, it's just those are probably better.
