    40 KB Deadlands with a twist. Anonymous 04/07/09(Tue)01:43 No.4207769
I am running a Deadlands game in the summer. However the twist is that it will be placed in Great Britain. Lovecratian horror meets steampunk with a dash of folklore and myth. I have the music to set the mood which will consist of Arcanum Obscura and Apocalyptica. I am creating the world from the ground up to be a nation run by science Mysticism. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Oddly enough I'm just going to suggest some reading.

Read The Golden Compass Series, I know it's a bit kiddy but it's very visually descriptive.

Also try and find a book called, "Whitechapel Gods," by S.M. Peters, it is a fantastic book and has some crazy ideas. Suck as a plague that turns people into clockwork automatons.

For a personal suggestion, have a blatantly Gestapo-esque organization, it lets you openly be a dick to everything without rhyme or reason.

Have some druids. Have some old style fey in there. Umm god what was that French folk tale about some kind of ghost like wolf? Throw something like that in there? Have the Illumanati for shits and giggles.

Organization wise: Have the Monarchy in place. Not as strong as it was but have some of the nobles be upandcoming scientists. They get a plot of land and the like and are allowed to do research. Have an Air Corp. Winged-Infantry with some kind of strange steampunk winged pack. Have a Regression Committee . they want things to go back to the way they were. Monarchy and all. Have them be puppeted by nobles by blood.

Sorry for the bricks of text. My mind is just kinda running with me.

An underwater factory. that was originally created as a way to dig for a valuable source of fuel, after many years became it's own separate nation. As more and more scientists and engineers families came to stay more space was needed to accommodate them. So more space was made. People then saw an opportunity to make a profit from everyone living many leagues under the ocean and so they opened up businesses. You can see where this is going eventually people wanted to break away from Britain like the Americans had done almost a hundred years ago. Since the facility was owned by several companies they decided to become independent from Britain. This did not go well with Britain but they were promised tasty deals that they couldn't refuse on the materials that they had originally sought after.

    >> Bowler hat and Bracers 04/07/09(Tue)02:50 No.4208283
    Hmmm...

You could make them all scientific rejects, that fits the science build, for examples ghost are simply a line of experiments to make people into an aether form.

From a more mystic side, they could be mother nature response to man's industrialization of the planet. (sorry for a near blatant FF7 rip off, but it's cool.)

Or for the Lovecraft throw, make them all creatures only existent to certain individuals and make it seem as though people who suffer from seeing them are part of some epidemic. Think Constantine but as a disease and also a government secret, or possible birth defect.

Glad I could help. How big did you want the folk lore/fairy tale bit to be a part of it? I love me some Lovecraftian horror but mixing the two would be a hit or miss in my opinion.

Not only that but what tech level of steampunk? Grazy gizmos or just things we have today but steamified?

An old folk tale comes to mind. The legend of Jack. He sold his soul to the devil. When the devil came to collect Jack asked for one more pint of booze. But he didn't have the coin to pay. Jack turned to the devil and asked "Just to get this along could you turn yourself into a pence to pay for the pint?" the devil did and as soon as Jack had the pence he put it into his coin purse that had a string with a silver cross on it.

No idea how you could use that but it spring to mind for some reason.

You also really need to establish government, Especially in an urban setting. Although in my person experience an oppressive government is more fun to play against. But I believe a Johnny Mnemonic, or Tank Girl, kind of, "tribes of the cities," deal could be interesting.

Actually off of your first idea there could be too many powers in the world. You have your lovecraft trying to end existence as we know it (death to everything and in extension humans). Then you have nature's sprites and werewolves trying to stop the apocalypse and revert the world to a mystical nature (death to cthulu and maybe humans). Then you have the industrial age trying to survive WITH SCIENCE.

My thinking was that The Old gods exist and they are what they are. I planned on the Dunwich horror essentially being the first adventure.

Faires folk are what is left of pagan gods and ancient spirits that were worshiped many hundreds of years ago. They are growing weaker because of the lack of faith and worship. They are whispers of their former selves but still hold some sway over the new world. Before the veil is permanently drawn on them, they are trying to ensure the survival of the world that they watched over for so long. In come feytouched heroes.

Hmmm another thought struck me. Though it may just be my mild obsession with Jack the Ripper. But Steampunk Jack the Ripper. Or Saucy Jack. Make him some kind of deranged serial killer. Taking parts from people trying to make a golem of some sort or experimenting on people and leaving disfigured steampunk limbs in the place of those in flesh and blood.

Or have him be one of the Old Powers some kind of Horror. Aciddently summoned from beyond, killing those that give off the right 'scent' low borns and the like.

Or have it be some sort of redcap like fey or being killing the 'impure'...Yeah I shall stop rambling now.

The Sky pirates are a band of sailors and thieves who began stealing parts and inventions from the Collegium that really didn't seem to have anything to do with one another. That is until the parts that were being stolen became more and more expensive and rare. These were not isolated incidents . This was a collective effort. Eventually raids began occurring on transport blimps that would carry passengers and valuables across distances and countries. Raids conducted by groups of winged machines piloted by one or more men depending on there size. This has made travel companies up their security and add escorts consisting of bounty hunters or mercenaries. They fight are becoming more intense but less frequent. Some say the pirates are preparing stronger machines with more deadly weapons. Their have also been rumors of a flying city that is fueled by a demon and captained by the pirate who caught him.

Hmmm how big of a military would the country have?

A strong navy sounds like it should be in existence. Maybe a strong Aero Corp. I like the idea of a Winged Infantry my self. Maybe large airships with hangers that open and the winged infantry do something similar to an air drop and then go flying?

Maybe have some naval encounter with some Old Ones or something. Maybe in an experimental sub?

Have the strong Gestapo be mostly comprised of steampunk/steamborg individuals. Mostly the lowerclasses promised that they would have some where to live and have three squares a day. get them while they are young.

Maybe there is some sort of war going on? Ooooh what about imperialism? For this steampowered Renaissance you have to get the materials and all that. Maybe a war overseas? Or even closer to home. maybe some rebels that are too well informed or are getting victories against all odds. Have them allied with some otherworldy force. Fey or other wise.

If I might make a suggestion for several organisations.

The Royal Society makes an excellent hotbed of mad scientific activity possibly rivaled by the independent industrialists.

Country nobility are very different compared to city nobility with the latter more likely to hold onto old ideals of chivalry, honour, folklore compared to the formers closed doors decadence. The middle classes are on the up and up and allied closely with the masons. At the bottom of the pile you have the disorganised crime cartels of londoners and immigrants mixed in with the folkloric covens and warlocks of the country.

Yes they should be able to do so. At least certain monsters should. Not all of them should. Some need help from willing(or in some cases unwilling, Imagining a man desperate to stop the voices, collects pieces to a ritual to allow a great beast to manifest itself fully in our world.) people and I think Cults are going to be a big part of the campagin. From the slimiest alleyway all the way to the royal court, the court infests and guides society to best meet it's goals.

Join our cult we have great dental!

And do some Peter Pan, "I do believe in faeries," claps. Kind of dick sounded but this is the nearest thing that comes to mind.

I've read Whitechapel Gods, I've got to add that it was really great. Inspired me to write a bunch of steampunk stuff. As well as that I would reccomend "Mainspring" by Jay Lake. The entire universe is literally one clockwork device. The book itself can get kinda slow, but all in all I enjoyed it.

Also, I'd kill to be in your deadlands campaign.

I'll try and hunt out this book.

You need cannibals. Seriously. And not just the gutter rats. The Cannibal Cult Of the Noble Courts. Maybe a bit cheesy but still a great idea with anything Lovecraftian.

I see a war with Giant Sea Turtles carrying clockwork cannons that belch Greek Fire. Also, for a bit of humor but also potential deadliness, catapults that launch Octopi that have blade grafted to them.

Cannibals are a must my friend, they will serve under an old god of some sort I'm sure. Who would they eat
    though?

Prisoners? Abducted poor? The sons of highranking officials? Figure out why they eat and I think we can figure out who they eat.

Virgins. DUH! They should contend to bring exotic meats. i.e. Islanders, freshly dead bodies, virgins, babies. Just something about nobility makes me think of them all trying to one-up one another.

hahahah holy shit. I can see people looking out from the boats "What the ell' is that captain?"
"Jesus Christ their shooting bladed octopi at us!"
First mate gets sliced in half.
"Dear lord, I promise never to eat sushi again if I live through this!!"

Well, you can play around a bit with the Freemasons. If you've read "Back East: The North" you know there was that guy who got kicked out, then started corrupting the one in the US. Also, you have the group mentioned in "Rascals, Critters and Varmits" the Explorer Society. Those guys are fun.

Oh, and let's not forget the Brits version of Slade, The Cackler.

Men are the only creatures with souls. The more souls that are consumed, the more powerful one becomes.
(Coincidentally, the old gods may just appreciate their sacrifices and bless them with a little power. Not to mention some horrible disfigurements.

Air pirates versus the Sea rulers would be an EPIC story. but only because of the ridiculousness that would need to ensue for either side to win.

I did run a game of DL, and I ended up having two Brits. They'd made the characters completely independent of one another. One was a report who'd run a piece on the Royal Family, that thought it might be a good time to explore the Americas. While the other was a member of the Explorer's Society.

They were two of the greatest characters I've ever had in a game.

    Good luck to you!

What do you guys think of this?
The Collegium is a collection of Scientists that essentially run industry and technological advancement in Britain. They are run by a council of their most intelligent or clever members.Funding for their ideas and ventures come from several sources. The Monarchy, various companies, and private investors. Their inventions are wild and their makers are even wilder. The word mad scientist could be thrown about often. Some of them are out for personal glory others want to make a difference in the world and still others are expected to enroll if either of their parents are members. That is, if they can make the cut.
