My group and I are from a poor neighbourhood. We grew up together, and when it became apparent that the girls who went to our school weren't interested in dating anyone who would anchor them in this shithole we turned to RPGs. Over the years it just became a fact that Friday nights were at my place, drinking and roleplaying. I think that I can look back on these nights as some of the happiest in my life: no matter what the week holds, we all come together and roleplay, and eventually we can laugh about the shit that happened.

I am the GM, a role that I love doing. Everyone else has been fine with that, so I come up with campaigns and let them do whatever (if someone's idea is better than the campaign we charge off on that road instead). Most of my sourcebooks are downloaded. Every year for my birthday everyone comes together and buys me one hardcopy book, and they all write in the cover so the books are special to me.
    >> Anonymous 03/22/09(Sun)21:52 No.4054389
But anyway, for my last birthday I recieved the Dark Heresy corebook, and we just finished our campaign. One of the final chapters saw one of the NPCs, Guardsman Ferrus Victus, killed in the penultimate battle against the Chaos-led sepratists. When the war was won, the PCs attended his funeral in a small town where his family had lived. Slowly, all the characters who had been affected by him through the campaign filed in, and soon there was a large crowd there to see him off.

That campaign ended two weeks ago. This week passed, my group approached me with a small box, saying they wanted to thank me for being the GM for them. Inside were a pair of dogtags they had engraved with Ferrus Victus's name, rank and unit, the second engraved with an Imperial eagle and, "We are the shield which protects Humanity."

I know this would have cost a lot, and I haven't taken them off and don't plan to. This is one of the nicest things anyone ever did for me. I have to confess, I was almost moved to tears.

Guys, I don't have much money but I need to make it up to them. What do I do?

Reading this made me think. My GM has been around for a long time, writing my campaigns and shit, and I've never really shown him that I appreciate his work apart from saying thanks at the end of each session.

Damn it, that's about to change! Next session, I'm arriving with a muffin basket and card!
    >> Anonymous 03/22/09(Sun)22:07 No.4054534
    it's very simple.

Continue doing what you are doing - if you can run a game so good that it moves your PCs to become emotionally attached to their characters, then you have already made them far more happy and given them a greater gift than one of physical elements.

You've allowed them to escape: you've allowed them to find solace and comfort and something to look forward to at the end of a hard week.

That's the best damn gift of all - something that we all wish we could find.

As to the dog tags - keep them, treasure them - they are a symbol to what you all shared together.

Feel free to ignore this if it's too much.

You are going to run a fantasy game. This isn't going to be any fantasy game, though. This is going to be a fantasy game about your group. A great evil is going to threaten everything you hold dear, and there are only a few heroes who can stop it. These aren't some grand, prettyboy characters who exist to kill goblins and look good. No, these are some kids from a poor neighbourhood who had the guts to stand up to the entire world when no amount of fame or fortune could make anyone else brave enough, when no love or honour could make anyone else care. You're the nobodies that had the steel for a plan and the heart to make it work.

The whole setting is going to be original material. EVERYTHING is going to be handwritten, and everything you use is going to be for this campaign. When you save the world, all the character sheets, all the GM's notes, all the dice, the pencils, the goddamn scratch paper you wrote initiatives on are going in a little box. Along with that, you put a little epitaph for each character, telling how great they were.

None of that leaves the box until somebody dies. When they do, you get together in your little group, and you read that epitaph, and you burn or bury everything about that character. Going into the ground with that humble pine box is a memory. A memory about all those Fridays, all those empty bottles, those critical hits and levels up. It's about Ferrus Victus and the innkeeper back in who-knows-where and the very first level one human fighter you ever played. It's about your friends and all that time together.

And you'll cry. Fucking hero's tears, you'll cry.

"You believe that I came from wealth? That I was tutored by the greatest warmasters from an early age, and used the grandest equipment?

Things could not be further from the truth." he said, laughing once at the thought. "In reality, I came from the slums of Middenheim. Death, starvation and sickness were an everyday occurrence for us, and the few of us banded together to survive. My first real weapon was little more than a hammer I made myself out of wood and stone when I was twelve."

Leon was shocked. "Where are your friends now?" he asked after a moment.
"They wait for us in the Grand Hall outside Wurtbad, awaiting my return. We will be taking our crusade against evil North, to the Wastes." He looked over at the startled Stirlander, dusting the Handgunner's shoulder off so the colours showed through. "We will need stout hearted warriors. Please, come and join us."

Leon looked in the giant's gentle eyes, and saw the righteousness blazing behins them. He knew that if he rode with this man, his life would not be wasted. Nodding in a daze, he pushed onward. Over the crest, the sun shone brilliantly as it set, the silhouette path leading onward to glorious destiny.

This story makes me kind of sad.

I've been playing DnD for a good 8 years now. Our group has been about 6-8 players in that time period and a few of us core players have traded off DMing (about 4 of us). All of the campaigns have been good, we know the system and we're not stupid. We don't run a game if we don't have a story and we don't just run a hack and slash game.

Over that time there are a lot of character I've really enjoyed playing, obviously some of them more than others. But reading this story made me think back that, really, I was never all that heavily emotionally attached to any of the characters I played.

Realizing that made me think about why. Do I not pour my heart and soul into every PC (or NPC for that matter) I make? I certainly like to think I spend quite a bit of time on them, at least initially with a Bio and the like, but if I've ever had a character I like die or a campaign ended I've never been all that upset.

Are me a my friends just horrible story tellers that we can't actually get attached to our characters? Do we just not pay attention to our actual characters and treat them as people, simply using them as ourselves to funnel what we want to do in the game?

    Thinking about all of this while reading this thread made me realize one thing /tg/;
We play this game because of the people we play it with. Our friends, our companions, they are the center of why we play. Everyone here who has sat down with friends over the past months/years realizes that they continue to go to that gaming table, no matter if it moves from one house to the next or has been in the same location for a decade, because of the people we play this game with.

So /tg/, I not only salute everyone who has DM'd in this post, but salute the players who have played the game, and all of the joy that their friendships have brought us.

Amazing...simply, amazing, OP. I have shed manly tears and this week is dedicated to you. My life, sir, has been inspired. Starting tomorrow morning, I am going without regrets!!

    Thank you, OP.

I cried, I'm strong enough to admit that. OP, keep doing whatever awesome thing you're doing. That awesomeness is the best thing you can give them in return.

    Hmm... wow.

I gotta say, this really makes me rethink my games. There's been a lot of fighting and bickering among the group lately whenever we sit down for dnd, I guess I get so caught up over getting people back on track and focused on the game that I forget the reason we play, to be together with one another. Thanks Op.

OP, I'd be glad to have a group a tenth as awesome as yours. You've inspired me to step my DMing up several notches, and I hope I'm fortunate enough to play with a GM of your caliber some day.

Also, as the rest, manly tears were shed.
    >> Anonymous 03/23/09(Mon)05:43 No.4057998
Wow, op. My group hastn played in 2 weeks, mostly because I've been having difficulty coming up with a new storyline. But you have just inspired me to make the best damn campaign I've ever made.

    I LOVE YOU ALL /tg/

At what point did the GM say he was good?

He just said his friends like to spend money on him as gifts in some weird showing of brotherly appreciation.

Also not to piss in your cornflakes but there are engraving stores that can sell and do what the OP said for $15 or so on top of the likely inexpensive dog tags. That's about the cost of a pizza, so I guess that it really was a tough decision.

OP's story also reeks of "Watch this cool last battle NO YOU CAN'T TAKE PART" ala Oblivion.

I'm sure you're having a ball pretending /tg/ is your big brotherhood and we'd all get along if we were put in a room together with this fellow at the helm, but I'd venture to say it's much more likely the opposite would be true.

Can't be less of a troll when I'm asking genuine questions that people seem to just assume for the sake of WHY CAN'T WE BE FRIENDS?

When a DM can make the players genuinely attached to their characters, as was clearly the case here, it's a pretty good indication that he's doing something right.

I have been GMing for 20 years of my 29 year old life. When I lived at home it was the one place everyone could come and get away from the hell that was high school. There we would game. Every type of roleplay, board, video anything that would let us escape. A few of the guys started drinking and smoking up while we did this and my mom couldn't have cared less. A few drifted away to school or with girlfriends and we talked to them at least once a month. Out of my gaming group I have married off 4 of them and our families know to call the others in our group in case of emergencies. We have fought wars together, burned worlds together, died together and laughed together. I have no doubt now that when I am on my deathbed the same people who first swung swords and shot bolters with will be at my side. Laughing at me for failing my save versus death roll. And nothing would make me happier.
