    Quicklime.

Calcium oxide- I'm aware of the alchemical name for it, despite my education, because I've been out here so long. I have seen the burning limestone pits- for some, that's the last thing they've seen. That's the most common hazard of New France, after our victory. There are other things.

Greek Fire (Not the only thing the Greeks brought, but like their signature, the only piece that anyone seems to care about) resides higher in the spheres. It pours down at times, when it grows too fat on whatever that monster feeds upon.

Never piss on the ground, at least not without one of the Granadan masks, and even then be careful. The gas... I don't know what it is, what has gotten into the very Earth of this damned field, but ask the local peasants where to go. It is a heavy gas, but I have seen men die in slow agony from the slightest breath.

I am convinced that this land is Hell. All the world hinged on Aquitane, so all the world took all of its ills and poured it all here.

I stand outside of Roland's grave. My gloves run over the stone- there is a green chalk on it. The stone crumbles in my hands. The Pope and the Greeks and all the heathen gods (Father Renault told me it was Termagant that was green, I whisper a prayer to Saint Alsace to protect me from him) tested all of their vile knowledges bargained from demons to kill one another.

    Why am I still here?

I fight the infidel so that when I die, I will go to Heaven. I have had my fill of Hell.

The Song of Roland is the most popular tale exchanged in Greater Christendom at the moment.

The tale of the famous knight of Charlemagne, his last moments attempting to preserve his lord's life- only to fail in the face of the pagan hordes appeals well to the feelings of the petty heirs to the Western Roman Empire. The False Church frowns on this, Leo the 3rd feeling that it encourages defeatism.

One needs only look at the acres of land lost along the Pyrenees to see that victory was Pyrrhic at best.

The Emperor then, Basil the First, at the sight of our ancient enemies spreading their reach into Spain sought to take advantage of the chaos, sending some of our young scholars with gifts of weapons to the Lord of Ariège, confident that the tide might be turned.

They are an inventive people, the Franks. And the interception of some of the devices by the Khalifah did not help matters.

Peace is there only by merit that the only nation winning and benefiting from this conflict is ancient Hades. A twilight hellscape burned and poisoned by the greatest minds of our generation.

They say that the greater part of the land has been so saturated by bleach and chemical, that the ammonia in urine gives rise to caustic clouds of poison.

I hear word that a crusade is being called. Jerusalem is the target.

    Heaven help them.

FUCK ME well all I would do without this is play Empire: Total War

I know the songs of the Hashmallim.

I hear their heavenly chorus from here, high in our side of the Pyrenees. They have constructed an especial alcazaba here, for me and the rest of the philosophers. We all stand out at the terrace, to stare beyond to the Frankish lands.

It should be cold here. And it is, at times. Then, we hear the whistles of the Hashmallim, and feel the hot breath of angels sweep over us.

I was once far from here. Far, far to the East. I was born among the Turks, and I can feel the slight of the others, that the Arabs must withstand not only Moors and Berbers, but the presence of a barbaric Turk- but I care not.

I thought I had found Allah in numbers. That in the grace of that universal certainty, that I saw the steps to the road to Paradise inside of a dingy cottage with paper and ink and my own mind.

    But now?

The others go up, wearing the especial masks made by the people of Al-Andalus. I once did that too. Even with those on, you catch the terrible scent, your eyes water, your throat starts to burn. Allah does not wish me to close my eyes. Allah wishes for me to see.

I stand there, at the balcony, with the others. They attempt to measure, to write, to draw in clumsy leather gloves. How could Adam know good and evil by only seeing the fruit before him? One must smell, feel, taste the gifts of God.

I hear their shock and alarm as I break free of my fetters. The Hashmallim. I see them, drifting clouds.

I am burnt without fire. I am blinded without light. Beautiful.

It is time once again to discuss Hotaru's Law.

Hotaru's Law is the same as Odin's but the only difference is that it is HOTARU'S. Hotaru honors the chosen dead warriors who have honored her by spilling blood and killing on the damned battlefields. These chosen few, mostly of Nordic descent, shall enter the Gates of Valhalla. Hotaru is a Fascist and Hotaru will tolerate none of that faggot communism, Liberalism, or Democracy. To die with your boots on honors Hotaru. Everytime you life a mug of Mead to your lips you must show gratitude to Hotaru and Odin. Hotaru tolerates no cowards. To die is but gain, for a Warrior's Fate gains you Valhalla. Hotaru demands that the strong rule the weak and destroy the undermen. When the Northern winds blow, you can feel Hotaru's cold breath and hear her voice on the wind. She promises glory and victory.

    Submit to Hotaru's Will.

Hotaru is Valkyrie to all chosen warriors.

Her Celtic Hair, her Nordic Eyes. The fiery spirit that consumes her.

She is become Death, destroyer of worlds. Ragnarok rests in her fingertips. Deny her, Blaspheme her, she will endure.

    Hail the New Dawn

Hotaru demands Devotion to her Holy Fascist cause.

Throw off the shackles of Communism, Left Wing Lies, and Democracy. Angels from Hell watch over all of Hotaru's Chosen. The Mighty Screaming Horde of Valkyries.

For Hotaru I'll say it, Mein Ehre Heisst Treue.

    Hotaru Ist Leben

I ask you....Are you really so happy with your goddamned Democracy or your fucking Communism?

Don't you ever yearn for more and better? Don't you ever want Fascism?

Hotaru promises good times ahead. Strength and cruelty in battle, Honor and Blood in peace.

Hotaru roams the Universe like it were crossing the street.

The streets will burn with the Holy Fire of Hotaru's Law. Oh Jackbooted Kaiserin...MY LIFE FOR YOU!!

    Hotaru ist Leben.

    Blood to you all.

Chemical crusade is a great idea though, misguided and fanatical people dabbling with what we know commonly today, but they only vaguely grasp their dangers. An endless meatgrinder - or, rather, vat of acid - that swallows men by the thousands at the command of gods.

Battlefield Jerusalem, trenches, redoubts and clay granades with angelic breath contained within, burning the skin of pagans from their flesh. Five hundred children, no older than ten will stage an attack on the left flank today, so the rest of us won't be burned by the greek fire during our charge. Zero hour at first light. In the name of God, amen.

    Some thoughts;

Cavalry would become unfeasible due to the chemical contaminations, so that could be a contributor to trench warfare. See also: crushing depression, etc. Expect "before the horses died" to be a time marker for reference.

Well remember that at Tours, in an odd case of battle, the Franks were able to defeat several heavy cavalry charges by compacting themselves into a sheildwall formation and standing tight, killing their commander. On another note, I would see a return to artillery-weapons like carroballistae as well.

Papal Bulla 812 (As translated from latin)

In this year, eight hundred and twelve years after the death and ascension of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the Agent of Heaven on Earth issues this decree, having been communicated to him by the Almighty God:

First proviso, that in war against the pagan, the infidel, and all the myriad agents of Satan and enemies of Christendom, that to serve in this Great Undertaking, one may be forgiven of all their Earthly sins, before and during the undertaking of the crusade SO LONG AS the sins in question do not serve to sabotage the Great Undertaking.

Proviso the Second, those weapons odious against Christians (Crossbows, quicklime, deathgas, Greek fire, etcetera) are hereby allowed to be used outside of Christendom's soil, upon the already tainted ground of the pagan, EXCEPT in sites most Holy and Beloved by God (The Church of Bethlehem, the Manger, Mount Zion, Golgotha).

Provisio the Third, due to the uncleanliness associated with the production of the weapons of alchemical warfare Mother Church will NO LONGER permit the propagation of further sites to create these abominations; forthwith, limepits, poison kilns, and crossbow shops are forbidden from being ten leagues near holy ground!

    Deus vult.

The noble call of battle is dead, resting fitfully in a grave dug by the hands of poisoners, magicians, and opportunistic Jews. Our kings, the men that claim divine right, who speak of their desire to protect Christ and continue Rome's glory sequester themselves with perfumed merchants and reeking alchemists, dreaming of new nightmares to put on the battlefield.

Once, war was a test of man against man, where those purest of heart, strongest of arm, and bravest in spirit would win.

    Now?

Now where once shining lance and sword glittered under the sun, ranks arranging themselves, the soft noise of whinnying horses punctuating the air, before the thunder of a charge and the victorious screams of battle; there is clanking ranks of huddled rubber, ranks holding vast lines of sheep gut filled with vile poison- these are the soldiers that replace the flower of chivalry?

My horse, I lost him, my, my fair Cirrus. I fought at the gates of Genoa, when King Louis made a bid to try to unite the land- accursed fish fucking Italians, there we were- lined up. Ready to charge.

They came out. Not even with spears. Just those bloody hoses. The gas...

It's not war anymore. Now it's just men trying to corral each other. Pissing on the Earth, fouling it forever, making the other man trip into mud that burns. Oh my horse, my horse. The mask. Those bloody, fucking, Italians.

There are no more knights. There are no more soldiers. Just rats, each trying to lure the other into their vile traps first.

    God help us all.

My family has been running for as long as I remember.

Sometimes, the ghetto was not large enough. Sometimes, a terrible thing occurred and we were conveniently blamed for it. Sometimes the locals just failed to like us. Sometimes my father was too good a trader for them.

I had lived in nine different towns by the time of my Bar Mitzvah.

Then the horses died, and no place was safe any more along the Moor Border, for Jew and Gentile alike. Not from the Poison.

My mother fell into a pool of acid when I was fifteen; barely a bone of her remained for the funeral. My father became something less than living after that, exhausted and sick and wroth at this world of stupidity. He took his own life when I was sixteen.

I took over my father's business, and kept running.

I found a proper girl to marry, of raven black hair and fair skin, and took her away. She bore me two beautiful children that brought us joy, but did not deserve the punishment of living in this poisoned land. "God will deliver us all," the rabbis had always said; but where? The Poison is everywhere.

Now I hear voices outside my home. They come for us with torches and pitchforks and those blasted crossbows. They are afraid, like us, of the Poison, and they want to take the rubber I sell.

But I know them. They are the same people I have been running away from all my life: those who hate us for being of the People, those who think we bring about all evil and abomination, those who honestly believe we created the Poison. In a way, they are right: Man created the Poison, and now dies to it.

I am done running. My sword is over the table, unsheathed and ready; my Rebecca is bringing the footman's axe to the hall; my children stand in the doorway, brandishing twin daggers.

We are lucky. The Poison will not have us.

    That's a good idea.

Rubber, imported and used by the Jews to sell as a way to keep people safe from the horrible chemical warfare being put to use around them.

It would require some route to Brazil (Unless there was some other rubber tree source that might conceivably be discovered).

Those mysterious Granadan masks might now have a better reason behind them. Hmm.

Is there anyway rubber could be artificially made? This world has super alchemy already, so it wouldn't stretch things too much, I think.

Of course, you can always have a route to the Americans and "Endboss: Mesoamerican leaders messing up with Europe before staging a massive invasion" , but I'd keep things Europe and Middle East centric.

There are a variety of synthetic rubbers- it wouldn't be impossible for some processes to be perfected. And with the Jews serving as the medium of trade between the Christians and the Muslims, it would not be inconceivable that they start getting a stereotype as the rubber providers.

Mesoamerica...We'll leave them out. It's still six centuries before Columbus historically set out, and I think that miring Europe in chemical warfare is enough historical tweaking.

God why won't it stop raining?

The trench is flooded. Horace drowned in a mud pit this morning, he was the third to go that way this week. I don't think I will live much longer here, if the gas, mud, disease does not get me then one of those Muslim scimitars will. I am dead already. My weapon has not left my hand since we were sent here. Its scabbard is pocked with the effects of the rain. Any water here is undrinkable. Do you remember how we used to drink from the river as children? Such a thing is not possible here. The rivers are clogged with bodies. Poison

As I write, the catapults are launching the canisters of Greek Fire at the enemy's trenches. Soon the horn will sound and we will charge.

I think this letter will be my last.
