I could definitely go for an animated Homeworld series. Out of all the art people have been dumping my favorite pieces are the ones that look hand-drawn. The full color ones, I mean. The sketches are cool too though, remind me of the movies ingame.

Because flying shit requires more fuel and has less runtime, and flying units are often much easier to destroy.

Nevermind the paper thin armor compared to a tank vehicle of the same weight, an airplane that goes out of the air is almost a sure loss of craft, while a tank that takes even drastic damage can usually be repaired.
    >> Anonymous 02/11/09(Wed)04:05 No.3678219
    >>3678180
On the other hand, an aircraft is highly mobile, and can be used as a high-speed platform for stand-off range missiles that can annihilate a tank in a single shot. Or a bunker. Or a whole city block. Then add to that the Hiigarans' apparent technological superiority over modern military hardware.

    VTOL wins.
    >> Anonymous 02/11/09(Wed)04:07 No.3678230
Who fucking cares about all that shit? Rule of Cool. A wizard did it. Whatever.

    >>3678180

...But all that's only true with our level of technology. These guys created huge interstellar fleets - I doubt making a fuel-efficient VTOL combat vehicle is much of a challenge after that.

    >>3678180
You're operating under modern assumptions. If you throw free-energy technology like Fusion Reactors and gravity-defeating technology into the mix then the whole game changes. You can put as much weight in the air as you want and roll your armor, air support, and arty all into a single flexible unit with a shorter supply chain, not to mention a hell of a lot faster deployment and re-deployment.

Between the possibility of micro-scale fusion reactors, incredibly advanced armor designs, gravitic drive systems, efficient compact mass driver technology, MISSILES OMG (Kushan do love their missiles) and all that, I don't see how VTOLs wouldn't be the Hiigaran military's Weapon of Choice.

IIRC both the Taiidan and Hiigaran tend to simply use corvettes and fighters for atmospheric combat and transport. In fact you can see in their ship designs a tendency for aerodynamics that is unnecessary for deep space combat.

The point I'm making is that there's nothing to suggest such technology will render the tactics of today any more moot, because it exists in the realm of fantasy.

I mean, sure, if you manage to invent anti-grav, and it's perfect in design(this being the key point), then you can armor something flying just as well as you can armor something that crawls across the ground.

And sure, if you manage to invent a stable, efficient fusion engine at sizes small enough to use in a fighting vehicle, then you won't have to worry about fuel.

But such tanks are the realm of fiction and thus invalid in the discussion of tactics.

lets not forget ECM is a HUGE part of their offence. I’m sure just as much on land as in air.

Someone mentioned the ridiculous antenna arrays on the ships, well with all the ECM that can go on i would imagine you'd need a fucking huge amount of towers to subvert and counter attack

I'd expect the HGN has evolved a bit since then. I don't see any reason why their empire couldn't have some kind of terrestrial 'police force' full of sub-orbital VTOLs and armed troops.

    Some insane shit, one assumes.

Those fuckers can board and take over even large ships in record time.

Besides, think of the kind of people you need for that duty. You need a sizeable chunk of them to be able to fly and operate weapons after the ships been boarded so you can resume combat operations after the ships been cleared.

In fact, that's a fucking awesome concept. A boarding team that works quickly enough to begin using the weapons on enemy ships even as they fight the crew for control.

Back on the topic of a Homeworld animated series, I can totally see this kind of thing working. Just have it from the point of view of a single, ordinary fighter pilot or gunnery officer on a frigate or something, and then at the very end his ship is destroyed heroically doing something heroic, or something.
TEARJERKING MODE: The narrator is a crewman on an ore collector, and can only watch in silent frustration as good men die protecting his ship.

Also, there's a distinct possibility that they isolate their C&C systems from their comms gear.
Mostly because there's no good reason not too, unless you plan to run the ship remotely yourself and in that case it makes no sense to have a crew aboard in the first place.

    Also:
"Kharak is being consumed by a firestorm. All ground facilities destroyed. All orbital facilities destroyed.. Detecting no signals from anywhere in the system. Not even beacons.."

"Atmospheric temperature now reaching six thousand degrees. Estimated initial casualties.. 98%. Total predicted casualties, 100%."

I loved that scene, if only for the fact that when Fleet Intel whispers "All orbital facilities destroyed" his voice quavers and he sounds as though he's about to break down into tears. I think that's the most emotive he gets throughout the entire game. Homeworld has some fucking amazing voice acting, even for a Relic game.

Fuck yeah, Commies Vs. Capitalists in space.

I still fear the word Kamov.

That game does not allow you to contact enemy pilots via comms and taunt them about visiting their wives after you kill them. Starlancer wins by default.

Understood, you didn't like the game, while we do. Move on. Subjective things like dislike or like of a form of entertainment don't get to be "right" or "wrong."

So you're either a troll or an idiot. Kindly shut up.

Yeah, I guess the blood flow in my medulla oblangata was pretty high, when the vessel popped it cut through my skull like a laser.
Other than being blind in one eye, smelling strawberries, and not knowing what "Food" is, I think I'm okay though.

Okay. Time to reinstall every homeworld game, and play all through, again. FUCK YEAH!

I've got originals of all three, loved the first so much I bought it off a friend for $60 aus back in 2001. Original box, manual, everything. Best decision ever.

Pic related, it's sitting in my closet along with other classic game boxes. Minus the best buy sticker though.

In Starlancer, you're a pilot of a fighter craft, and the system lets you initiate comms with just about anything. So you can trade insults with enemies and shit.

    in sumation:
    SEIGE CANNONS
    Kiith Somtaaw= badass
no gundams allowed, omega boost and maccross is fine
it is the best spae sim, thus all series must have a homeworld 2 mod
we hope homeworld 3 is good
they have tanks, but the tanks hover and MISSILE SPAM and EWS
A show would be cool, but not from a pilot perspective
We need to make a RP system
    >> Anonymous 02/11/09(Wed)07:12 No.3679454
Why is it that in HW2 the Siege cannon wasn't deployed on every Capitol Ship?
That thing was the most boner-inspiring piece of ordinance Relic ever had in a game.
