01/22/09(Thu)06:51 No.3483275Oh, and you can feed a person on about an acre or two of land, supplemented by other options (hunting, gathering, keeping a milk cow or chickens, though those would require land as well, of course). Working alone, a man can work about five to ten acres, assuming decent pre-industrial tools and accesses to a draft animal.
Granted, he wouldn't need that every day. Better to share the plow, furrow and ox with a bunch of his friends. This would also be a huge help when it was time to harvest. If you don't like the people around you, you could always just have a large family to provide the workforce you need.
As far as my character.. I think I'd go with the son of a very butch, aggressive watchmen from a nearby village that moved away to escape his father's expectations and start working a small farm, maybe the Hill, start by getting a milk cow and a few sheep, selling wool, milk, cream and butter in the village. |
