The game is too easy to win the same old way. I have had several fortresses where one champion in masterwork adamantium single-handedly kills all of the daemons (MINE A LONG ONE SQUARE SHAFT INTO THE PITS THEN WALL IT OFF IMMEDIATELY THEN MINE ALL THE ADAMANTIUM AROUND THE PITS WHICH YOU KNOW NOW WHERE THEY ARE THERE I RUINED IT FOR YOU), sieges, megabeasts, everything, every dwarf has a god damn royal dining room, etc.

I've been dreaming for a long while of building the self-aware fortress which will maintain a food and drink homeostasis, so you can just close the front door to avoid sieges and go off the computer for a few hours, leave it running. I'm not yet exactly decided on how it might work best.

This is what I've come up with so far, you could have a wall which separates the kitchen and farm complex from the rest of the fortress, and another behind which the stills are. In the walls there are mechanically operated doors. There are several stockpiles, depending on how careful you want to be, say a first stockpile and a second stockpile. There are pressure plates in the corridor to the first stockpiles of food that open the gates to the farming complex. Same thing for the drinks stockpiles. All fields and kitchens and stills are set to produce/repeat/all seasons.

Sadly I haven't had the time to play DF recently.

Yeah I have the same problem, I've event started making forts in very dangerous areas and so far all have been relatively fine except for one that started by a haunted river.

    A whole river.

Teeming with an undead water ecology.

Zombie freshwater crocodiles, skeletal hippos, zombie/skeletal milkfish, zombie stingrays, a few carp of both varieties and misc other undead fish that were too many to name them all.

That was just what was in the river (the only source of water on this map BTW), the woods and hills were filled with undead beasts that I had not taken into account. Knowing the area was dangerous I had take a host of dogs to fend off attacks while we dug in and sealed ourselves off, many swarmed to the rivers where they were dragged under by the godless monsters, drawn by the blood from the wounded that got away the undead horde was roused from the depths. Crawling lifelessly towards us we desperately hacked into the chalk below trying to make a chamber big enough to accommodate all dorfs and suppiles. Alas it was too late the moment we got there, we had started too near the river right in it's bend surrounding us on two sides. The dogs drew attention to us too quickly, we had no time before the tide of darkness fell upon us and while a few of the walking dead were smashed under the hands of the settlers the weight of numbers pressed down upon us.

We tried to flee to the hills, abandoning the wagon as a lost cause, to try and break the earth and survive on what little we had. The zombie ogres soon put an end to that.

Later I sent a team to recover the site, The King saw fit to send no less than SEVENTY fully armed martial dorfs to this forsaken place. Unfortunately as soon as one fell the others began to go mad with grief, some wading into the river to exact revenge only to drown while others lashed out at each other in a blind fury. The expedition tore itself apart in half the time the original did, soon the rivers ran red with blood for miles around.

I shudder to think of the unholy army of zombie dorfs that now inhabit that site, some 70 dorfs in full armor and armed to the teeth lurking by that river ready to claim more innocents to swell their ranks.

Self sustaining forts are pretty easy if you have a cave river.

Unlimited water from that, you can flood and drain areas to grow trees underground, and mud also grows crops.

    Done.

I had a fort that was built back and forth across a chasm once. Nice place, got it to mountainhome, then got bored and abandoned.

Then I went in as adventurers from time to time and fought the constantly respawning chasm creatures that now also spawned through my fort since it was connected to the chasm.

    Then reclaimed.

Holy shit. There were 170 chasm creatures in my fort. Naked mole dogs, trolls, batmen, antmen, snailmen, etc. It was a freaking massacre. The fort ate three 70-dwarf reclaim teams. The third team finally won, though most of them went crazy. I survived a few more seasons, but abandoned again. The walls were covered in blood from the occasional dwarf that would go apeshit and slaughter people, or the chasm creatures that hadn't been found to start with. I had literally thousands of bones.

    Not self sustaining, self managing.

If you have an active farm with no other control and you walk away from the computer, one of two things will happen unless you have the exact right amount of farmed squares: either it will fill your stockpiles with plump helmets and you run out of booze because of no barrels and get stuck in a barrel hell if you have no wood, or your dwarfs will eventually starve.

Also, since you will probably have a lot of idlers if you leave a fort to run and don't assign mining tasks, there will be childbirths, so even an exactly balanced amount of farms for your current population will not work in the long run.
    >> Anonymous 01/20/09(Tue)15:16 No.3466249
    >>3466186
No booze won't kill a fort that has a river supplying water.

Farming is automatic enough that it's self-managing. Just come back eight hours later to 10k plump helmets and dwarfs drinking water.

The only problem is all the auto-pausing.

I'll have to find a suitable site for the iron thing. I might have one on a mountain, but it doesn't overlook the region. (If I could just stick it on a hill by a river, that'd work better.)

The rest would be simple. No doubt that it would leak water, so I'd have to surround it with drainage and put a deep drainage pit under it, but it could work.

Crude diagram of some of the fort's features, subject to change. Counting the handle on the top, it's 18 Z-levels tall, but only a little over ten or so spaces wide. I figure this could either be a major industry building (perhaps with a magma reservoir somewhere if I can find a spot with enough headroom for this thing AND a magma pipe) or just a fancy home for my stoneworks or craftworks.

Another thought just occurred to me.

This thing, by necessity, has to be connected to a power source. That means somewhere in the guts of the building I can place mills, and with a bit of seed trading and foraging, I can get three colors of dye. (Four if I settle in an evil zone, but that's not as fun as it sounds most of the time and I'd have no chance of building something like this in a timely fashion.) With mills turning out dye, dyers could work here dyeing cloth. If I also have silk, this could be my chief export easily. More importantly, iron? Cloth? GET IT?
    >> Anonymous 01/20/09(Tue)16:07 No.3466767
So I drafted two dorfs into the army, pretty standard procedure. Decided to have them spar with each other so they wouldn't suck in an actual fight. Now, I was pretty new to the game at the time, so I didn't realize that my Dwarves had both picked up iron spears instead of wooden weapons. The result, of course, is that one of them was mortally wounded.

The wounded Dwarf was taken to a bed, but he was in pretty bad shape so I figured he would probably just die or something eventually. For several months he lay in that same bed bleeding to death, but he just clung on. Then, one day, he miraculously got up.

While his body was healthy, however, his mind was not. Apparently lying in a bed in excruciating pain for several months makes dorfs go a little crazy. He ran out into the hallway and killed some poor guy's pet (it was a donkey or something). Now, I figured that for this dorf there was just no going back, so I had the army go in before he killed anything else.

Obviously, the troops made short work of him. But who was the one who struck him down? As you can expect, fate was cruel- it was the very Dwarf who had wounded him in sparring and caused his condition in the first place.
    >> Anonymous 01/20/09(Tue)16:08 No.3466769
    >>3466767

Now at this point, I was shocked. But the story doesn't end here. The miserable dorf who had wounded his friend and comrade, and then killed him, was having some pretty unhappy thoughts about the whole ideal, as one might expect. Fearing that he too would go crazy, I removed him from the army so that he wouldn't be carrying a weapon if he did. Meanwhile, a local crossbow-maker entered one of those strange moods. He went down to the crypt, where I had neglected to make enough coffins for the recently deceased Dwarf to be properly buried, and found his body lying on the ground. Out of his bones he made a crossbow.

Upon witnessing this, I immediately placed the Dwarf who had killed his comrade back in the army, and equipped him so as to be sure he got that very crossbow. For many years, he battled the enemies of the Fortress, remembering with each shot from his friend's bones the terrible price of reckless sparring.

You'll get over it when you realize that a 11x11 column/tower can be made impenetrable and profitable in under five years. People had a huge optimization hard-on back in the 2-D days because you just had to. You had limited space and only one chance to make it work, and not only that you had only two dimensions of space to work with. Now you can make that space EVEN MORE OPTIMAL with a limited amount of work, leaving the rest of your land free for... well, nothing. You'll never come close to using it all.

Since the game is so easy now, the only point in playing is to goof around. It's ASCII Garry's Mod.

I had a fort a while back, can't recall the scenario I decided to set out with (I usually decide on a specific scenario for the expedition, rather than randomly play), but I do recall one specific event.

I usually name my rulers, to keep track of what they get up to. This ruler was a woman dorf named Xarathim, a mason who usually sat in her room accounting the fort's production. One day she mandated the construction of something, large gems I believe - things that appear randomly in gem cutting, so I eventually ordered some gems to be cut.

Unfortunately, not enough large gems were produced and Xarathim decided that someone had to be punished. The vexed ruler decided that one of the craftdwarves was to blame for the lack of gems (even though it had been a gem cutter working on the production order), but the Guard did not have any cells to lock him up. Growing increasingly angry, Xarathim took the law in her own hands and murdered the offending craftdwarf, becoming branded a horrible person overall (I fully expected the Guard to kill her, but they continued being quite ineffective).

I watched Xarathim wander about the fortress after the grisly deed, and I noticed that she was deeply depressed over the event - because she had recently lost a close friend. Turns out the victim of her rage was her best friend in the whole world, and I can only imagine her crying "WHY DO YOU MAKE ME DO THIS!?" as she bludgeoned the man to his death.

When I asked her to engrave some walls, she carved some pretty emo stuff.

The very first time I found HFS, I ended up digging into the very bottom of the pit. You know what came out after me? A Demon Lord. Not Toads, not Tentacle Rape (that came later though), nor a few Spirits of Fire. Just a single Demon Lord. He then ascended my giant elaborate ramp staircase, and despite my best efforts, proceeded to open up a can of whoop ass on my entire fort. In the very first moments of battle, he struck down 5 Dwarves including my leader. He then proceeded to go on a rampage throughout the warehouse/ stockpile district of the fort, setting people on fire, and in total killing over 40 Dwarves.

But in the end we killed him. A single Hobunk Miner struck the beast in the head with a pick, and knocked it unconscious, where then almost 20 Dwarves swarmed in and beat the fucker to death.

We got some good engravings out of it before OH MY GOD TENTACLE MONSTERS WHAT? WHY?. Which is a funny story in it's own, as I sent a unskilled Adventurer into the fort to check it out later... and immediately ran into the one that killed so many it got it's own name. What happened? I panicked and threw a bolt at it and lobotomized it. Boom. Headshot.

    My newest fort:

Mod code for War Bears and War Harpys(and mod so harpies can have kids, so you don't have to abuse the fuck out of the fact that harpies are only 2 points a buy)

    No traps
    No fighting dwarfs.

    No locking the door.

Just thinking about a goblin siege being torn to pieces by big ass bears and harpies is fucking hilarious.

I've switched to playing 2D only nowadays. It's more fun to get a group of 20 immigrants, 15 of whom are nobles, and have your 90-dorf-fort drop back to 40 tantruming headcases by next year. Who starve because they're too busy destroying buildings to build farms and wiped out the roads and trade depot long ago.

While I think you can get lucky and find a few holes in the aquifier or find some dry squares if your biome crosses over into one without an aquifer, in general the fucking thing is all over the level you find it in.

Volcanoes help, they have dry squares all around the magma vent.

Well I've covered about half the Z2 trying to find a dry space to go down, but I think if it comes down to it I'm going to mine out as much of Z2 as I can, and then wall off a section and see if I can get a screwpump to lower the water level some and hopefully find a few [1/7] so I can channel down to z4 and it can start to flow down

Yeah that will work, it's a pain to do though. Hope you've got some stone for building with, it's a bugger when the stone is under the aquifier.

As a side note, if you need to drain any water you can dig a channel into the aquifier so it fills up then drain any water you need removed into it, aquifier squares can contain unlimited amounts of water.
