  • "UPTIME IS THE GAME, DOWNTIME IS THE NAME"
today marks the end of scheduled maintenance—two guys with two weeks to kill and a few hundred hours later, we're finally [mostly] done.
page loads/image downloads should be dramatically faster. until we hit 1gbps, at least. to all of my wonderful and ungrateful users: "you're welcome."
(note: there are still a few other things i'll be working on so expect intermittent downtime)
ps: thanks so much to mvb for all of the help and support.

Ace is good/neutral; or at least he probably sees himself as good/neutral. It's still highly likely that he works for bad people/abominations, mind.

Remember; Ace only armed himself with that grappleweapon AFTER we had Tom jam his leg full of crowbar.

As much as I am a fan of Ace, and he is my favorite character, I'm afraid his part is mostly done now. When we encounter him again, seriously wounded as he is we will either finish him off, or even if we can befriend him I think Weaver will have him die from his wounds rather than have us gaining such a powerful ally.

    two quick points.

last session, there was a thing that neither ruby nor tom was CRAFTY enough to open. And in the Poem, there's the final line: the flock that cannot work together/is sure still trapped in hell.

I think we need to find a way to work with any of the other survivors, and red too if he turns up again. Not to the point of risking dismemberment, obviously, but let's try not to wrack up any more fatalities if we can avoid it.

If we could get ace on our side, could he clear out the rubble blocking the rooms red blew up?
    >> Anonymous 01/13/09(Tue)18:29 No.3395438
I'm not sure how many of these discussion threads we can have before they just repeat themselves.

That said, I like to think Red's not "NEVER CATCH ME" etc was for Ruby and Tom, not Ace. It was the only thing on the wall that he knew they'd see when they came in, and he had a pre-existing negative relationship with Ruby.

The other walls already had shit on them, and there was a note to Ace in the room which read 'TRY TO CATCH ME NOW!'

Right, right. So if he's hostile he'll still be a problem, but since he's past STAGE ONE of NOT being harpooned through the fucking chest he'll be more manageable than before, and perhaps defeatable. But Since he got a harpoon through his chest, even if he'd be fine as our enemy, if we befriend him Weaver will just take him away from us because he bled to death or something.
Ace tried to revive Ruby after she was stuffed in the box according to the reports, and put her in the coffin we started in instead of MURDERING HER. He probably isn't going to kill Ruby.
But he did take Tom's eye, the second time, and ignored Tom as he went to grab Ruby. The only other person we can guess he was after with this dedication was Red.
What the fuck is Ace up to? Ruby seems to be priority #1 to him, and his mission isn't to kill her, or really anyone else, but if you get in his way...
    >> Anonymous 01/13/09(Tue)18:33 No.3395493
I think we can all agree that Red's 'whispers' that inspired the treatment came from something sanity-eroding, possibly with too many tentacles.

If we get Ace on our side we fucking win the game. Honestly, he got blown up, stabbed, impaled, and he just keeps going. He was tearing apart a wall that was in his way. Remember Tom crowbaring the wooden door? We get Ace we just keep tearing open doors and acending, it's just that easy,
but that's exactly why we'll never get him on our side, and why he'll likely have to die as a villian instead of a hero.

Perhaps 'Tom's eye' was really 'Tom's Mutating, soon-to-be-mouth-core-for-bellsprout-monster eye'. Taking it from him MIGHT have been a favour to keep him from becoming like the Hound, however horrible it must have seemed to Tom at the time.

If we hadn't jammed the crowbar into Ace's leg, I think he would have been more amenable to the idea of helping out Ruby and Tom. As it stands, he is chasing them with a grappling hook polearm. Considering that in he was weaponless in the video logs, he cobbled together that weapon just to deal with Ruby and Tom. This comforts me in an odd sort of way; his use of a weapon suggests that Ruby and Tom are more dangerous than Red and the mysterious patient that only Ace could deal with.

If Ace is following orders, his orders are now to kill, not detain. If he is on his own, I believe he now considers Ruby and Tom too great a threat to the scientific facility. It wasn't until after Ruby contacted Stitches that the dark chasm appeared.

tl;dr Ace is out to kill Ruby and Tom before they make an even bigger mess of things.

Anyone think that maybe Tom's stomach cramps and vomiting of blood wasn't caused by arsenic poisoning? Sure the fish may have been poisons, but think about it, these characters don't eat, drink or sleep, have been through constant hell and have only blacked out due to mental instability/excruciating pain.

When Ruby's third eye took a while to appear, she was in pain, there was blood and she has a headache from it.

I think Tom's stomach cramps where his extra arms beginning to form, the blood he vomits is from his insides rearranging. He doesn't tell Ruby what is happening because of the same reason Ruby doesn't tell Tom about her eye. He smiles weakly at Ruby when she does her pirate expression not because he is thankful for her caring, but but rather out of nervousness.

Also, Ace only 'appeared' after Red broke the moniters, which alledgedly Ace had been using to spy on everyone. But what was he doing before that, anyway? The biggest questions are why did he put Tom in the room he was in after being poisened, and why was he the one to put Ruby into the coffin she started in? He could have killed them both, easily, but whats the point in just...
The weapon is a bad sign, yes, but that might not been it's purpose, he probably could end them both without it anyway. So far he's only worked to perserve Ruby and Tom, and we know he gave chase to Red who Ace was only trying to "catch", but if his purpose was more of a jailwarden, then why didn't he just stand blocking the doorway after 'we' woke up?
He has a bigger part to play in this.

Remember that locked cabinet that Tom was not CRAFTY enough to pick the lock on? Seems to me we'll need a CRAFTY character. Now, we could meet a new character for this or we could get Red back, he's certainly crafty enough to fit the bill.

Before sitting down to spy on everyone, I think he was detaining the Abominations. This could explain why Bear was locked in a closet, and Bellsprout was locked in the dummy's room. It would also explain why Bear was a LIQUEFIED MESS; Ace had to fuck his shit up before he became manageable. Therefore, it is logical to assume that, after Tom and Ruby broke out of their detainment, Ace had to step in to detain them once more because they have the potential to mutate.

Like Hound, Tom's fucked up eye could have disgorged another Bellsprout, as >>3395543 suggested; therefore, Ace gouged out Tom's infected/possibly mutating eye, and detained Tom for observation.

From this we can extrapolate that Hound also complained of excruciating pain in the eye, but Red did not take action/allowed the infection to grow, thus leading to Bellsprout. This would explain the medical diagram of the eye we saw in one of the rooms; either Red or Ace was studying it for Hound's sake.

    >> Anonymous 01/13/09(Tue)19:20 No.3396039
Considering that the most realistic action for Ruby to do next time is to run away crying, what do you think would happen if she tried to get Ace to lock her up again? Can he recognize surrender? If he did "kill" her, wouldn't he just bring her back to life again?

Hmm. How old is the Metal Glen? We assume this is all the first time through, but with resurrections and amnesia and -something- that can apparently clean up anything, what if it's all been going on for much longer? An endless cycle of wake up, try to escape, find clues, somehow die, get brought back? In this case, we are talking not of survivors, but prisoners - and Ace as the eternal, vigilant guardian, trying to keep it all contained for what is, in the end, the good of the whole world. Being cooped up together - they'd all go crazy, eventually.

He doesn't speak not because he can't, but because everything that could be said has already been, long ago.

If Ace is a "previously successful experiment" as hypothesized, and considering the hints of a source to all these experimental ideas (whispers in the head, eye disc, etc.), then it may be that he needs a symbol - like the various symbols we've seen around - for a name. For some reason. If he lacks a symbol, it may represent that he's no longer under anyone's control, or something like that.

    Hmm. Right Hand/Left Hand. ...Mirrored.

    HMMMMM.

Question: Was it REALLY a mirror that came down, or just that Ruby assumed that a mirror had come down so that's what she saw? Remember, what Ruby has seen isn't always what is really there/seen by anyone else. so when she saw that 'reflection' of herself, was it really that - or could it have been this theorised 'Other Ruby'/Doppelganger/6/Blanca copying her motions/coming up with them herself at exactly the same moment?

Ruby Stalvern waited. The lights above her blinked and sparked out of the air. There were abominations in the base. She didn't see them, but had expected them now for years. Her warnings to Sujbect Tom were not listenend to and now it was too late. Far too late for now, anyway.
Ruby was a test sujbectfor fourteen years. When she was young she watched the waves and he said to dad "I want to be under the ocean daddy."
Dad said "No! You will BE KILL BY ABOMINATIONS"
There was a time when she believed him. Then as she got oldered she stopped. But now in the underwater base of the MG she knew there were abiminations.
"This is Tom" the radio crackered. "You must fight the abominations!"
So Ruby gotted her longshareman's hookd and teared up the wall.
"SHE GOING TO KILL US" said the abominations
"I will bite at her" said the hound and he snapped his teeths. Ruby hooked at him and tried to tear him up. But then the poisan gas fell and they were trapped and not able to kill.
"No! I must kill the abominations" she shouted
The radio said "No, Ruby. You are the abominations"
And then Ruby was an abomination.
    The radio said "Just kidding."
And then Ruby was not an abomination.

What I would like to know is how the "supernatural" factor plays. Maybe Red tried to use some kind of strange occult teachings after their own "unethical" treatments failed. He introduced the treatment who relies extensively on the manipulation of these "forces" (or whatever) and knew that they were capable of healing almost anything and reanimating people from chopped bits as long as there is some some parts of the brain remaining. The treatment was not just unethical, it was vastly unknown. Red had NO FUCKING IDEA of the side effects that could happen. The biggest problem wasn't the patients going psycho, but the whole "treatment" who forced them to stay there as some kind of hell and fucked up reality.

Even if you extrapolate and go with the idea that they actually discovered some sort of incredibly awesome healing process, it's rather unlikely that all the symbolism and writings painted in blood are just because Red went crazy, and that the BROKEN PHYSICS ROOM is just a phenomena resulting from an experiment gone wrong.

Dammit, now I have an Event Horizon feeling about this. Metal Glen looks to be a very large facility, and with only 8 cells (at least in the small bit we have explored) I have a feeling that the patients were not the only things being experimented with. Who knows, maybe an accident from another lab had an even worse reaction to whatever super experimental treatment Red was asking permission for (it obviously had to be something huge/highly unethical as it required the entire board's approval and it seemed like Red was asking for permission for quite some time).

Again with people assuming that Ruby had no free will in her attempted murder and actual murder.

There is no sufficient evidence to credit any scenario in which both scenes depicting Ruby's violence were not her responsibility. There is no sufficient evidence to discredit any scenario that involves her committing these acts of her own accord.

There are numerous ways in which a seemingly pleasant girl can also be a savage killer.

First, and most obvious, she had different information at the time. Most of you wouldn't be able to kill someone out of hand, but in the right circumstances could do it fine.

Secondly, she may have had and still have extreme sociopathic tendencies. Red and Tom were making things harder for her, so she got them out of the way. She hasn't done anything like that now because Tom has been extremely helpful and not only is there no reason to kill him but it would be a terrible setback for her. She's nice because, like most sociopaths, she may not understand societal rules but she can still recognise and follow them, understanding that it's best to follow these rules.

She may, alternatively, be the sort of person who reacts with egregrious disproportionality to real or imagined slights. Red and Tom did something to her, so she had to do something to them, and she did. So far she hasn't done a damn thing because there hasn't been anything significant enough to trigger that, or because she is intelligent enough in her anger to recognise when it is a bad time to do it and is waiting until they get to safety to do so.

So long as other credible scenarios exist in which Ruby willingly attackd Red and Tom, you cannot validly assume that she had no free will to do otherwise, and you cannot use that assumption as a premise behind other arguments without your argument being stupid and crap.

We've all been assuming that pre-coffin Ruby went crazy, killed Tom, and tried to kill Red. Could she have had a reason for doing so beyond just madness? It is easy to imagine her wanting revenge on Red if he were a part of the faculty at the facility, but then why kill Tom? Could he have been a narc? Or maybe she realized that he was dangerous for some other reason? Maybe it was a mutually agreed-upon mercy killing to prevent him from undergoing the transformation into a slavering monster.

We still do not know a lot about Tom. He's the only character introduced thus far to have not shown any murderous tendencies. I don't think it's safe to assume yet that he is not capable of the same behavior.

Most sociopaths do, the vast majority. Working off the simple definition of a sociopath as someone with a substantially compromised or no ability to empathise with other people, more recent studies suspect as much as eight percent of people may be sociopathic or have sociopathic tendencies. Most of them you will never even notice because they are capable of recognising the way society works, and recognising that if they don't follow those rules bad things will happen, and that they are expected to follow those rules at all times. They are completely capable of living a life utterly undistinguished from a normal life, and the only difference between them and a normal person is their reasons for doing so.

The sociopaths who become notable by doing bad things, which are very few in number but far more visible to the point where most people automatically assume sociopaths are killers waiting to happen. Those sociopaths always have another issue, be it substantial greed, a subset of society having rules that seem more improtant than collective society's, some form of mental illness, and also a trigger by which the capacity and will to kill meet with the opportunity.

There is also the potnetial that Ruby may have been intensely violent before and that the treatment may have actually suppressed or even eliminated those violent tendencies. Just because something does bad things doesn't mean it only does bad things.

Reasoning behind #6 being a shape-shifter: We've seen monstrosities ranging from a bear that, when killed, keeps coming back and a weird-ass hound with a long arm and a floppy lower body. Yet these are not as dangerous as #6 who was moved to another cell far away from the other patients. In a situation like this, the only thing more dangerous than a monster, given that both the monsters and this #6 both have homicidal tendencies, is an effective liar. You can keep a homicidal nutjob quarantined or locked away, but if they can lie effectively they, essentially, have free run of the place within their status.

An effective liar with the ability to change their face and body to fit their needs is far more dangerous than anything else in a situation such as this. Discounting, of course, something that could bring the facility down around itself, killing everyone but itself.

Problems: We don't know how long these subjects(stitches and the hound) have been around, much less how long they've been loose. This also means that we don't know how long it's been since they changed.

However, it is just as likely that they had been detained and sedated for further testing as it is for them to have just suddenly changed when things went wrong. This is supported by the fact that we do not know the particulars of the experimental treatments being used in the facility.

tl;dr: We don't know. The best guess we have is that #6 is a shape-shifting lunatic that, seemingly, had it out for Ruby for one reason or another. This is not as likely as Ruby just not remembering having attempted to kill both Red and Tom, but fits the genre more.
    >> Anonymous 01/13/09(Tue)21:43 No.3397314

Except this isn't exactly a situation where anyone would hold steadfast to societal values, and if a lack of empathy is the definition of being a sociopath, than I probably am one. Hence, I seem to have more authority on whether or not a sociopath would drop someone like Red in a situation such as Ruby's.

The closest we get to third-party interference is that Tom is still on the table, with the way the blood trails across the floor and Ruby's commonly acknowledged lack of strength. If Tom ran to the door during stabbing, it would mean that Ruby followed him to the door to keep stabbing him and then pulled him back to the table and hoisted him up onto it.

It's an incredibly weak argument and it's easier to make a case that Ruby is officially recorded as dead at the time and we know that the 'treatment' has mental side effects, and that that is either A: not ruby or B: there is some unkown circumstance compelling this action.

It is also based on the fact that the face-changing monster scenario is not only possible, but fits the genre more than the 'randomly going nuts and attacking people' theory.

In addition, we have more evidence to the contrary of Ruby going insane than we have to support it. Unless you're saying that the attacks witnessed in the videos happened in the three days we supposedly lost consciousness after the white out/'Red cuts ???' incident, in which case I'd ask you why Tom doesn't remember any of it.

Why would Tom remembering them even come up? Those videos are DATED. We know that they happened before all of this started (as #6 was stored in the brig until 23 nov)

The blood ont he floor probably just dripped off of her as she walked to the door. She was no doubt covered in arterial spray from all the throat-slitting she had been doing.

There's not enough information on the dates and the history here to contextualise the last video, which is the most suspicious of them for that reason. Without that, the Ruby Went Batshit theory is the simplest and most supported.

There is still no real evidence in favour of the Shapeshifter theory. You can't say anything that specific fits the genre, and there are literally dozens of potential creatures that fit as well or better.

that would be a shit-ton of drippage right there. The only reason I don't discount blood drippage entirely is some of the crazy blood we've seen in the facility.

Also that isn't real ruby. Ruby is an albino.

    Read the notes.

29 Oct: Ruby declared dead, to be stored in cell 7.
    8 Nov: That video
23 Nov: #6 moved from Brig to Lab B (Tom was in the Brig already as of the start)

Not really, when you consider how much blood pumps through the jugular vein and the carotid artery.

And Tom doesn't remember anyone else in the cell with him? Odd. There's more to Tom, I'm sure.

We don't know The in-setting date. It could well be december. It's quite possible that they moved Tom there AFTER they took #6 out.

MEDTIP: FOR THERE TO BE SUFFICIENT FRESH BLOOD ON RUBY FOR THAT MUCH TO DRIP OFF EITHER SHE AND HER CLOTHES ARE MADE OF A FRICTIONLESS SUBSTANCE AND SHE MANAGED TO RECIEVE THE FULL DOUBLE LOAD OF ARTERIAL BLOOD OR TOM SECRETLY HAD THREE REGULAR-CAPACITY CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEMS ALL OF WHICH WERE EMPTIED.

ARE YOU SERIOUSLY CRITIQUING THE AMOUNT OF BLOOD PRESENT IN A HORROR GAME?
    SERIOUSLY?

Considering that they were making out when she cut him up (presumably), it doesn't seem unlikely that Ruby would have been bathed in all the blood.

    >>3397781
I claim no responsibility for that, but it's funny as shit.

No. Read all of the posts in the chain. The person he responded to said 'no it's actually a reasonable amount of blood' in response to a post that says 'I'd say it was an unreasonable amount of blood, but I don't because of the crazy blood content elsewhere.'

NO, MERELY THE PEOPLE USING THE QUANTITY OF BLOOD AS A PREMISE IN THEIR ARGUMENTS.

IT'S LIKE USING PORNOGRAPHIC FILMS AS THE PRINCIPLE MATERIAL EVIDENCE IN A STUDY ON THE SEXUAL HABITS OF WEST LONDON.
