It's not animated. Stare at one of the dots, unfocus your eyes. It all stops moving. It happens because your eyes are naturally draw around the shapes, and it makes them appear to move as your brain grasps feebly at making sense of it.

I found this part especially unnerving.
The idea that Red had been holed up there all along, for god knows how many days or weeks or months...
Plus, knowing he was right up there when Ruby was exploring, or trying to open the passage, or even when she found Tom on the monitors... I mean Red could have been there at any time, waiting quietly, listening. And he was right near the monitors, too, so he probably used those a great deal.

Plus, you know, everything else about Red's hideout.
Massive headwound mark on the wall didn't help.

The problem is, half the freaky stuff could be just Ruby going further into the mountains of madness, but at least half that shit is real too, and you can't really separate the stuff that's real from the stuff that she thinks is real easily.

This is a narrative game. The purpose of a narrative game is to entertain through providing compelling story and the right level of challenge. It is an artificial world constructed to suit a purpose, and as a new world, everything in it has been constructed topwards this goal. Therefore, everything in it has been put there for a reason, whatever the reason may be.

Further, since the creator has limited time and resources, the more significant any change in this world is and the more attention that is drawn to it, the more likely it is to be of importance.

This is a significant change to which our attention was specifically drawn. Therefore, it serves a purpose in achieving the aims of the narrator, in this case creating a narrative and posing a challenge. Therefore it is either significant to the narrative, or intended to misdirect, in which case it is significant in telling us that there is something so important to the narrative and the challenge present that it becomes worthwhile to expend limited resources on drawing our attention away from it.

We know that this is a significant event, the smashing of the monitors. We have been presented with no reasonable scenario or clues that one exist in which something other than Red smashed the monitors. Since this is a narrative, that means it could only have been Red.
    >> Anonymous 01/01/09(Thu)02:43 No.3289238
    From the poem:

"A world of men and man's design
A place where God's light would not shine
A Hell of steel beneath the brine
    Where misery's echoes boomed.
And all around her there were others
Beasts like her, all sisters, brothers,
Locked up, all, with one another,
    In deep sea-dark, entombed."
    From this we can determine:
    1. The facility is probably far underwater.
    2. It is somehow explicitly against god or the concepts there embodied, implying anything from demonic pacts to Lovecraftian elder gods to simply a pursuit of science beyond ethics.
    3. All the other animals here were imprisoned just like Ruby. Though that's not to say there may not be some that were here prior to that.
    >> Anonymous 01/01/09(Thu)02:44 No.3289239
It could be that Red saw something massively fucked up or learned what the place was really about.

Or it could be he found out that the place truly is impossible to escape since it can be altered to prevent it's occupants from leaving and thus Red left in the only way he really could. Or perhaps someone was trying to get him and he gave a final FUCK YOU.

    Or possible all of them.
    >> Dr. Baron von Evilsatan 01/01/09(Thu)02:44 No.3289240
    >>3289236

Since Red did it, it was done for a reason. Since this is a character in a narrative, these motivations will be simpel and limited. We know that the characters are the only things thus far that have appeared to be of any importance whatsoever to Red. Nothing else has interested him, and his every action has seemingly been in order to manipulate the characters. again, this is a narrative, so whatever motivated Red to smash the monitor would have been something to do with the characters.

The monitors are visual only, so whatever prompted him would have been a visible action.

There are multiple possibilities here of actions involving the characters that took place between the last time the monitors were seen whole and the first time they were seen broken. However, most of these actions were taken in line with Red's desire, since he clearly intended for them to complete the puzzle. Of the actions that took place that were not made in order to complete the puzzle in the timeframe, the most significant by far was Tom kissing Ruby.

Since this is a narrative, and works by the law of narrative causality, the most likely cause of any action is the most significant. Of the scarce few options that could have motivated Red to smash the monitors, this is by far the most significant.

It's a very simple conclusion if you have experience with metagaming.

I have formulated a theory about why Tom couldn't see the corpse-in-the-box. Basically, the [human] mind has safeguards that deny things that are just "too weird" to stomach. Concept of "somebody else's problem" from the Hitchhiker's series of books, basically.

To Tom the bear that chased Ruby through the door, before he saw the blood everywhere at least, was probably just a crazy guy. All he heard was 'RAAAAH!' and Ruby telling him to press the button that closed the hatch.

He didn't see the second monster(the one that got hooked in the face) and couldn't make out the specifics of the one that dragged him off and gouged his eye out.

Ruby, on the other hand, has seen, and lived through, all of this crazy shit. She's desensitized to it, thus degrading this ability to deny things based on the thought process of "Nah, I must be imagining it".

... BURERS AND ZOMBIES AND PSEUDO-GIANTS AND FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

I wonder what the significance of Ruby seeing her own corpse inside the box is. Either it tells us that she's going to die no matter what or it was just thrown in there to show us how insane Ruby has become. As someone in the thread speculated, the zombie on the wall might very well have killed Ruby and shapeshifted.

On the one hand, I felt pretty sorry for Tom. He's been through so much shit, they finally have a breakthrough, and he puts it all on the line to demonstrate his love for Ruby.
    And he gets shot down.
His post-rejection face is so sad.

But on the other hand, having Ruby suddenly and inexplicably fall in love with Tom as if through some magic kiss would have been cliché and for the time being, it's not really a fitting action for Ruby. It's been made pretty clear she doesn't see Tom that way (at least not yet) and his action WAS rather sudden and unsolicited. Ruby's reaction makes more sense to her character, even though it's kind of a downer.

PSYCHTIP: It doesn't matter how developed your ability to block things otu is, you will still react to them. The mind is incapable of rationalising away anything without first taking it in, and then recognising its potential for harm. If you see something that unpleasant that you simply cannot handle it and have the sort of mind that can disregard such input you will still experience an initial reaction before your brain clamps down on the offending input.

It's like taking an umbrella out when it's raining. No matter how skilled you are at opening it quickly, you will still get rained on.

As for your Ruby notes, that's actually the exact opposite of the way this works. Being able to blank out unpleasant input, emotions, and sensations is a learned skill. You can't do it at all if you haven't had a need to before. It only develops in response to suffering trauma that you are simply not capable of handling. Like, say, a soldier in a completely one-sided war cannot accept unfairly killing fellow humans. He can either create a new moral code that makes it fair, a martial code of honour, or deny that he is killing them by escaping into delusion, or deny that he is killing humans by dehumanising the foe. That is, incidentally, the reason combat veterans frequently express nothing but loathing for the entire race their foe belonged to, even if they don't do it for anything else. They don't actually believe that, but if they were to accept that they killed that many people they couldn't handle it.

So, yeah. Ruby would be far better than Tom at blocking this sort of stuff out, specifically because she has seen more horrible things.

Also, these horrible things mean that she is far more likely to experience mental breakdowns including hallucinations.

There's every reason to believe the corpse was a hallucination of Ruby's, little that it was real and Tom couldn't see it, and none that Tom had blocked it.

Things like that are common. When you have an unfair war, soldiers often make them fair in their minds by creating a set of rules that they can follow, which gives them a source of authority to justify their actions and transfer their own guilt to.

It's where the traditional codes of martial conduct, like Bushido and the Chivalric Code came from. They're both sets of rules that grew to encompass most of life, but originated from a set of generally-accepted rules as to what was fair in combat. It's funny, but most of the people who complain about how silly these codes are do it because it gives all sorts of advantages to the weaker party and the defeated and say that it's obvious that the losers need these up to avoid getting trampled. These people have completely missed the point. These codes are built for the winners, so that having killed people face-to-face, they can go home relatively free of trauma, the pain of having killed being eased by the knowledge that you followed the rules, and that the enemy knew the rules in advance before they came to fight.

It's interesting to see how this has changed with modern warfare. You have increasingly lopsided conflicts, with forces that have total numerical, strategic, intelligence, training, experience and hardware advantages against much weaker enemies, making war much less fair. You also have increasingly powerful weapons making civilians casualties far more likely and more numerous when they occur. However, you also have far less personal means of killing. Whereas in history when you killed a man you felt the shock in your arm and the resistance of flesh and bone as you cut through his chest, now mostly soldiers point a gun at someone else, press the trigger, and see a small pink mist and a man fall over, and even moreso, weapons where all you have to do is press a button and thousands die.
    >> Dr. Baron von Evilsatan 01/01/09(Thu)03:44 No.3289461
    >>3289451
You have an unsurpassed opportunity for soldiers to escape the unpleasantness of having to deal with killing through depersonalising the enemy, an ever-strengthening driving force pushing soldiers to deal with it this way, and weapons that make depersonalising casualties more dangerous than they have ever been before in all history. This is why keeping soldiers aware of the personal nature of war is more crucial now than ever before.

It's like the old saying. It cuts your very soul to see in your sleep the faces of all the men you've killed, but better that than when you can't see them any more.

    >Also, these horrible things mean that she is far more likely to experience mental breakdowns including hallucinations.

    >There's every reason to believe the corpse was a hallucination of Ruby's, little that it was real and Tom couldn't see it, and none that Tom had blocked it.

Since I don't yet have the ability to force my way into Weaver's mind through the internet, I don't know what he knows. The basic assumption for any game world is that everything works as normal, unless something is demonstrated or explained as working differently. This obviously assumes that the creator has total knowledge, but I don't think in this case that it's too much an ask that he knows that the more fucked-up shit you see the more fucked-up you get.

Anyway, I posted that mostly because that guy said I was wrong. The discussion hasn't had anything directly to do with the game for a while now.

Weeeeeeeell, I do have a (work in progress) website, however it's only got stuff I did at university on it (animation rather than drawings), as I've been in a slump until last month when I had to make lots of christmas cards for friends and family.

    Here's the link.
    http://www.youpoorthing.com/

Glad you guys like it! Looks like it won't be finished until tomorrow, as I'm only just finishing up the inking (the two monsters were a NIGHTMARE), and even simple colouring is going to be pretty intense, especially since I haven't figured out an efficient way to do those awesome blood splatters Weaver does.

It's quite possible tha Ruby is both developing extrasensory powers AND is going insane, at the same time.

Actually, considering the genre, each one would go hand-in-hand with the other anyway.
    >> Anonymous 01/01/09(Thu)17:46 No.3293099
Tom probably recovered a healthy amount of his SANITY POINTS when he got his hands on the CROWBAR. It did restore his confidence, and allowed him to vent some emotion.

Ruby, sadly, has not had any opportunity to get a regain herself. One wonders what sort of thing would give her confidence.

Since when was tom able to get into the room with the blender, I thought his MANLY PHYSIQUE didn't allow him to. But thinking about it, its probably the same reason there is a fucked up half room with a massive fucking hole and entrances to it from the same level but going what the fuck, fuck you, I am upside down, fuck your laws of physics.

Because she's a woman. If Ruby had kissed Tom, he would have regained more SANITY POINTS from the confidence boost. But Tome kissing Ruby only raised her EMOTIONS, and while this served to activate her AJNA and grant superpowers, unfortunately getting superpowers in this sort of story is A Bad Thing. Adding to this is that raising your EMOTIONS also reduces your LOGIC stat, which is very valuable.

Ruby seems shy, and somewhat embarrassed about her flat-chestedness. Perhaps getting an increase to her CUP SIZE would improve her mood. Alternately, some means of assuring her that there are no hidden cameras (or that they are no longer functional) might reduce her PARANOIA.

Spinesnake had the advantage of being the first, so we had that intial unexpected shock (enhanced by the fact that we were already on the come-down from the first shock of just seeing it).

We are calling the spinesnake Bear Zombie, atm.

The second one is either Plant Zombie or Hook Zombie.

The body found on the wall is being referred to as God Zombie, to keep in line with the other names. We are also colloquially referring to him as "Stitches."
