    13 KB Ruby Discussion Weaver !!vY8rj3XdjnI 12/24/08(Wed)14:42 No.3237315
(Don't get your hopes up, this isn't the continuation of the game threads yet.)

Instead I was hoping for some thoughts on the Ruby adventure threads. Specifically, I was planning another installment tonight or tomorrow, but seeing as how it's Christmas Eve I might wait until the night of the 26th to start up again. Several people have already requested a delay so that they won't miss the threads, and I'm doing my best to ensure that the same crowd can consistently follow the threads as they go live.

How many would prefer a short delay in the threads so they can be here and actively participate in them? Or would a sooner installment be the better choice?

Also, I'd like to take this time to discuss any problems, complaints, or suggestions people have for the adventure on the whole. I know early on a lot of people were complaining that the plot progression felt like railroading, so I've done my best to make things more freeform and open-ended. What else needs to be fixed, or would you prefer to see changed? What's done right and what's done wrong?

As with the adventure itself, your feedback helps structure this into a more enjoyable experience.

I know I speak for /tg/ when I say that I feel that the adventure threads would benefit from some THE FLOOR IS LAVA

I'm all for waiting til the night of the 26th to get it rolling again with the original posters that the story started with.

But more importantly: bump to keep at the top where everyone can see Weavers message.

I'd probably favor a short delay in the Ruby threads for now, since /tg/ is going slow and lacking a good chunk of its population right now due to Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and these threads are something that shouldn't be denied to any of us just because we weren't lifeless enough to stay home and visit /tg/ for Christmas. Take it easy and don't rush things, unless you want the slowest Ruby threads to date, with only 4-5 people participating.

As for the adventure so far, well, it's been great, what can I say. You can really see the beauty of real-time CYOAs here, especially ones which have been drawn for easy visual reference, unlike several other imageboard CYOAs I've seen. The railroading isn't actually all that bad, and people feeling down because their course of action wasn't taken is inevitable in these kinds of thread. So, good work so far, and keep it up. The feeling that an RPG player gets when his character gets into an interesting cliffhanger, anxious to find out what will happen next session... well, how do I put it, Ruby is /tg/'s character, and so we all share that feeling, and it's nice to see /tg/ united and all together like this, rather than the seething pile of rage it can be sometimes.

I squealed with joy when I saw this image and your tripcode, Weaver. Just thought you should know that.

As for your question, waiting until the 26th would probably be a good idea. However, the rest of my answers are all squealing-fanboy-esque answers about how much I love how it already is.

I think a delay would be great. Tons of traveling on Christmas day and eve. I'm actually leaving in an hour for somewhere.

I liked it personally. You let us do what we wanted for the most part and you gave us equal consequences for our actions. I think it is fine as it is.

Keep up the good work. =3

You should continue the threads when you feel like doing them. It takes a lot of effort and creativity I imagine, so when the time presents itself where you feel like you want to proceed, you should. Don't let yourself be explicitly bound by schedules of others, there will always be people who will miss it, but you might just as well be engaging others who haven't joined in before at the same time.

As for my opinion as to how to proceed, continue as you see fit. I see little need in change beyond what you have already stated on the reduction of violence in order to save time. Keep up the good work.

After the adventure is over I'd love to see a series of "what ifs", personally. What if we pressed the green or blue button in the locker? What if we squeezed out blood from the severed hand into the funnel instead of sending it up the vacuum tube? That sort.

Wait for people to come back.

The people that complain about railroading are sagefags that don't like CYOA threads, sagefags that think this is furry, and/or Fuuka(heartsymbolthatI'mtoolazytofind).

You are definitely doing the story progression right. It's tense and mindfucking at the right moments(OHGODZOMBIE), with moments of cuteness dashed in to give the scary moments more context(Ruby doing a pirate impression to make Tom feel better).

Though, I've noticed that you occasionally forget to take off layers in you Photoshopping, such as shortly after the last fight against the abomination against God, when Ruby goes back one room, and the gas from the room behind the couch is still hanging about the ceiling.

Also. Someone did this for you. Thought I'd post it here.

I liked the way he did it except I think he used too many pictures sometimes. Like the zombie closet was done perfectly imo but near the end the glass breaking took too long. It put alot of suspense in there but took to long.

It's less about avoiding violence and more about drawing out action sequences in such a format that requires much more time to illustrate, which in turn slows the story. But I'm learning my limits.

    >>3237413
    >I've noticed that you occasionally forget to take off layers in you Photoshopping, such as shortly after the last fight against the abomination against God, when Ruby goes back one room, and the gas from the room behind the couch is still hanging about the ceiling.
Yep, probably my most glaring technical mistake so far besides the occasional duplication of items when I forget to remove them from one area after they've been moved and/or picked up. Such is the price of speed, but I'm learning what to look for so it shouldn't happen as much.

Also, I want to thank everyone who did fanart. It's really a nice gesture, and I appreciate it.

These threads are awesome. Keep up the good work. In particular don't listen to people who complain about railroading; in these kinds of things some degree of railroading is inevitable - and for the most part didn't happen anyway.

I agree with the 26th being a good idea.

Can I suggest posting some 'coming soon' threads, just so that people know what time to log on? Personally I'll make time for it, and I suspect there'll be others who'll at least want to know and not miss the start.

The problem with railroading is that in a thread styled like this where there's only one progression, everyone will assume that what DID happen was planned to happen, simply because it happened. There are no simultaneously-explored branching paths to disprove it so people will just assume that what they see is what they were going to see no matter what.

However, I made both sessions occur at the same time of day so the same crowd could be there for them. I feel like I owe it to the people who've participated thus far to keep them in the game, so to speak.

Given the Crossing Pals comic Ruby's (and Tom's) character design originated in, that's not a bad comparison.
Tom would be more likely to get raped by Ruby than the other way around.

Poor Tom is so sexually frustrated.
He's been in that cell by himself god knows how long.
He peeked up Ruby's skirt, stared at her ass while she was crawling between rooms, and then there was that whole condom incident and his reaction when Ruby asked him to get it.

He's either incredibly sexually pent-up or he's got the mad hots for Ruby. Or both.

Ruby DOES sometimes seem more concerned about hidden cameras catching her in a dirty act than about performing the act itself.

Of course, her self-consciousness and (unfounded) paranoia of hidden cameras also serves as a good base for future rule 34 and writefaggotry. Nothing like a little voyeurism and exhibitionism to spice up a good pornographic story.
    >> Anonymous 12/24/08(Wed)19:00 No.3238483
You know, given the whole "animals as people" motif to Ruby's adventures has anybody considered the possibility that the fish were actually the ones running the laboratory?

If we presume that the water button in Tom's cell floods the facility then everything fits into place. With the labs flooded the fish would be able to roam freely about and even access the exterior of the compound which we have already established to be aquatic in nature. The tank itself was likely just an observation module from which they could watch the progress of their experiments.

Not anymore though because we've killed them all.

I agree, this one's very iconic of the personality I imagine someone like Ruby would have to have, panting and sweating as she runs through these gruesome corridors.

The only thing about it that's not very Ruby is the breasts.
After all, poor Ruby has been described as "flat as a board". She's probably not even an A-Cup. We're talking mosquito bites here.

The stylish anatomy and delivery works well, and Ruby's (and everyone else's) exaggerated proportions and skinny limbs make her seem all the more helpless and frightened in her current scenario. Is this some as-yet-unremembered memory of Ruby playing with a pet kitten by the name of Tom, which might hint at this being a hallucination?! Or is it simply a picture of a future Ruby petting a kitten by the name of Tom, whom was named after her dear friend who may or may not have made it out alive?! Only time will tell!

Also. Bleh. I think I may have made her look like a man, by accident. I suck at this game.

You put so much personality into these characters and this style that it feels like they're protagonists in some cartoon. They're just so expressive in terms of even their basic composition. Then you add on the fluidity of poses and the completely adorable facial expressions...
    Great stuff, really.
And yeah, I want to believe that deep down Ruby is interested in Tom. But so far she's managed to keep things purely professional.

    Looking pretty phallic there, monster.

...you know, I just realized another option as long as we're spouting conspiracy theories and getting all meta on this story.
Along the lines of the dream/hallucination ideas, what if it's all a metaphor? Consider that everything Ruby sees and does is symbolically compelling and it becomes a psychological exploration of her own psyche.

Perhaps this is more Silent Hill than we realized, and regardless of how real this facility or anything in it really is, Ruby's entire adventure is a manifestation of her subconscious fears and desires.

Speaking of manifesting fears and desires... If you think about it, there's already evidence that Ruby's an unreliable narrator.

First and foremost is the indication that she's paranoid: somehow convinced that this mysterious place she's never seen before is full of hidden cameras. Emotional or psychosexual trauma, perhaps, stemming from being a victim of some voyeur at a young age?
A peeping Tom, if you will?

Just a quick idea, but I'm almost willing to bet someone else's right testicle that the end of this little adventure is going to be a giant human hand, reaching in and scooping Ruby out of a tiny maze.

Tom DID sneak several sexually-charged glances at her more private areas when she wasn't looking. In fact, she's been too distracted by the phantom threat of her imagined hidden cameras she insists are watching her every move with voyeuristic intent to notice Tom looking right up her skirt.

And this will playing in the background whilst her fragmenting mind reviews memories about the terror and madness that she'd been put through.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFCJoW8oWSU

She looks back and sees that the maze is now empty and that Tom is nowhere to be found, if, in fact, he makes it to the end. Cue the replayed lines...

"I call it 'The Room Is Boring'..."

    "My name is Tom..."

"Not a problem, Ruby, stand back and let me use my MANLY PHYSIQUE..."

    "The Room Is Boring..."

    "Tom..."

And then, our protagonist looks down at her hands... and sees a cat's paws. Cut to black, cue the horrified scream of sudden realization. There was no Ruby. There never was. There was only Tom. Crazy, crazy Tom, hallucinating everything that had happened.

    The End.

You're saying Ruby suffered psychological/emotional trauma brought on by sexual abuse, possibly at a young age, and most likely involving cameras?
Would explain her obsessive worry about voyeuristic cameras when there's absolutely no sign of any such thing so far, nor any evidence to believe there might be.

Look, I hate furries as much as anyone, but it's the people I hate, not the imaginary characters. Anyone who's been here more than a week knows it's the drama furries stir up with their bullshit that makes furries so ridiculous and offensive, not their art or porn (of which there are many more disgusting or pathetic varieties).
When you become so reactionary to perceived furfaggotry that something really fun like Ruby spontaneously becomes worthy of loathing when it's depicted with more detail, you've crossed a reasonable boundary and turned your distaste for drama into a source of it. The logical schism that illustrates is far more ridiculous than someone drawing Ruby with paws.

I think it's an arbitrary distinction and if you're raging at furry porn you're raging at the wrong part of their idiotic "subculture".
There's far worse kinds of porn, many of which routinely show up on /tg/. The entire furry routine is overplayed, and should be taken somewhere like /b/ or /v/ where people will still trip over themselves trying to voice their hatred of anything that's even remotely related to furry shit.
