It'd be interesting. Perhaps more so if the lich would be open about it, or track them then approach them when they finally found it.

Phylactery should be a gold coin, which the lich didn't realize that he spent on spell components.

Which is why he can't find it.

His phylactery is actually on him, he just doesn't know it due to the wards and shit he put on it. In the end the party returns to him to tell him where it is and gets to fight him.
