Maverick army lists are ruining the entire metagame at my FLGS, and it's all because of this guy, right here. Flame Mammoth is WAY overpowered, if you ask me. He just lays down tar and flames anyone who tries to get in attacking range, or just melees them half way across the map if they get close enough. 18" is WAY too good a range for a High Priority Attack like his flamethrower. I built a Boo/Magikoopa list to take this guy down, but he just has way too much health for the Magikoopa to do any good. Anyone else have an issue with him?
    >> Anonymous 12/01/08(Mon)23:45 No.3096835
Sissy faggot. It's fucking Boomer Kuwanger that's overpowered. Flame mammoth hardly ever makes his points back, and his invulnerable save is shit. Just have someone with the Dash quality melee him. He'll die like a little bitch.

Didn't think about using Dash. Come to think of it, a Koopa spam list could do him in pretty quickly, provided you roll well. As for your problem, using Gust to deflect Boomer's Projectile attacks is the only thing I can think of, personally. A Pokemon list with plenty of fliers could work pretty well. (Boomer's not a problem in my meta, just because he's hard to find.)

Kind of dependent on ambushing first, but I can usually beat him with protoman.

Needs a bit of skill, but his ambush abilities are fucking amazing if you know how to use him properly. You just have to keep him out of harm's way - he's really damn fragile, especially against reploid weapons.
    >> Anonymous 12/02/08(Tue)00:00 No.3096946
The entire Original Generation set has a bit of a tough time against the X Generation set, but it's fun to find combos that punch right through the Mavericks' defenses. I once totally screwed over this Sting Chameleon list with Air Man. Me and everyone watching the game laughed for like 10 minutes when Sting tried to swing towards me and I rolled perfectly on my scatter dice blew him off the table. Wound up cleaning up the rest of his guys with a few Mets.
    >> Kitty-Moogle-Chan 12/02/08(Tue)00:02 No.3096958

Why the fuck are you using protoman? Use Shadow Man and somebody with Blackout/Shroud/any other shrouding effect. Personally I like using Shade Man but that's because I'm nostalgic, and plus he's dirt fucking cheap for a status inducer. There are all kinds of random things that can do this. If you need a beater, Spark Mandrill, if you need a statuser, Shade Man, Cynthia, Koga, if you need artillery...well I don't think there's a shadow strike from that far away yet. That would be kinda broken. "oh hey look this AOE is ambush-tastic here comes protoman/shadowman/every single one of Koga's fucking pokemon/MOTHERFUCKING DRACULA"

Has ANYBODY managed to do anything with Drac? 666 fucking points. That's most of your army in standard. I mean he looks like he can wreck house but too much stuff gets him first. How do you set him up?

And I've yet to see a good counter for sniper joes outside of the heroes/bosses.

And when you give them their jumping mounts, they're great. Work wonders against some of the cheesy X-set lists, you just have to keep them out of concentrated enemy fire, and far away from their leaders.
    >> Kitty-Moogle-Chan 12/02/08(Tue)00:08 No.3097002
Throw effects are great on leapers. We've known this since Total Chaos when Machamp came out with that fucking ridiculous throw.

Idea just hit me for drac, and why couldn't I have thought of it sooner: what screws over drac? HEROES. What screws over heroes, that nobody ever takes because he sucks? SHAFT.

Command the Soul. Never works huh? DRACULA. Marked For Death: automatic CtS. Hey look I just ganked your Zero and he's ripping and tearing your other hero to death. I'm now on a fucking rampage eating your army with drac, healing like crazy, and you can't fucking stop me.

Oh, and fucking robots, and anything that stops Drac's heal.

...we need to make this real. Everybody grab your heroscape shit, grab some greenstuff, and start picking things to do.

Look, you are all forgetting about thwomps. Sure, they don't hit very often, but when they do, instant death. Toss a couple of them together with Fortune's (MGS2) reroll ability, and you have a pretty good chance to one shot any hero unit that is giving you trouble.
    >> Anonymous 12/02/08(Tue)00:17 No.3097062
    Dracula's good for two things.

The first is how god-damn hard he is to hit and kill. He's got tons of hp, and half of the units in the game can't even hurt him. You just have to make sure nothing can actually pierce his armour or get at his weakpoint, and he's golden.

The second is his piercing attack. Two high-damage attacks that go straight through to the end of the table? Its' ridiculous.

The teleporting is only really useful when the terrain is really tricky, but it means that he's at home pretty much everywhere.

And if he is going to die, his "second form" is usually enough to rip apart whatever did him in melee.

And yeah, Protoman is expensive, but he's damn cool, and shadow man doesn't have as much range as him. The shadow blade is good, but if you don't get close enough to whatever you're trying to hit when you ambush, he's pretty much wasted.

Man anyone else having trouble with armies that field Crystal Snail? Ok so his attacks suck and so he will almost never make back his point value directly.

Forget that though, not only is he a fucking incredible tank but he has that crystal freze attack that locks down your troops. After that your army is prety much sitting ducks for whatever heavy hitters he's got paired up with him.

Oh man, this brings back memories. I haven't played since second edition. What are we on now, fifth?

Did they ever nerf the stupid elemental vulnerability rules? I always used a robot masters list based on covering all the common vulnerability groups as efficiently as possible and then filling up the rest of my list with masters that could shuffle the others around. It didn't matter that half my list was never going to see combat, because those that did were always fighting things that gave them ridiculous damage bonuses. Seriously, needle man vs bubble man, what the fuck?
    >> Anonymous 12/02/08(Tue)00:26 No.3097104
That's only any good against other robot master lists and other things with vulnerabilities. What are you supposed to do against, say, a koopa list?
    >> Anonymous 12/02/08(Tue)00:26 No.3097108

lol yah I remember watching two Metal Man players go at it and every round would come down to who got the first hit because for some reason the devs thought it would be funny for him to be able to one shot himself.

No now elemental weaknesses are generaly just double damage now instead of WTFPWNED damage.
    >> Kitty-Moogle-Chan 12/02/08(Tue)00:30 No.3097130
You forget that he can mark a dude so he's always hit by stuff. Instant deaths, mind controls, shit like that is theoretically fun with drac but a bitch to set up. Shaft is cool because he's hard to kill. Doesn't do FUCKALL else though, but god bless stealth.

But yeah I think we're on the same page with drac: keep the shit that can rip his face off away from him, and ream grunts.

Mass Joes is nice until anything with a piercing attack shows up, then they all die. Don't get me started on what Storm Eagle does to them, but there are plenty of cheaper troops with similar effects.

They changed things a bit; the old stuff works the same way but the new stuff can be add/subtract damage rather than OMG MASSIVE DAMAGE.

Yeah, but the problem with thwomps is that they need setup spots. Unless you're playing a special map they're not going to walk into a fucking thwomp. That said, drac + castle full of thwomps + some joes and maybe shaft = you win.

What would beat that? Richter maybe? Pierce gets him past the Joes, Dash gets him past the thwomps...okay fine you need Shaft. Fuckall stops autohit mind control with no target restrictions (remember drac makes it autohit).
    >> SquashMonster !!YzKAMLHEhyW 12/02/08(Tue)00:30 No.3097131
Every last one of them has jump vulnerability. Bring in gemini man, shuffle him out for hard man twice (okay, they must have fixed this one at least, right?), and watch the entire army fall apart.

While that is true, a careful study of the books shows that instead of taking Magna Centipede (120 pts) I can sub in Magnet Man (85 pts) and get much the same effect.

Sure its one die less damage, but it has double the range. Now if only I could overcharge it like the magnet mines...
    >> Kitty-Moogle-Chan 12/02/08(Tue)00:34 No.3097144
Anyway, back to the OP, if you need to flatten out maverick lists, stop fucking spamming koopas. Koopa spam SUCKS. Joes laugh at Mammoth because he needs to set up tar THEN have something light it.

So if you want to mass troops and beat mavs, take some Joes. Then take anything with Sniper. I like Jackals because they're FUCKING CHEAP and they're also commons. Everyone who bought any of the later castlevania sets has a fucking million jackals. That gun bitch from the last castlevania set is good too...expensive, but not unique and two can snipe the trunk vulnerability on FM, arms on launch, those fun things. What you really want your snipers for though is to keep fireheaters from getting over you.

Why? Because if he has to set up tar on your joes to kill them, he's gonna have fireheaters to light them on the same turn, he's not going to use flame to light them. Fireheaters are one point. ONE POINT. They suck shit but they set things on fire. Watch out.
    >> Anonymous 12/02/08(Tue)00:36 No.3097156

I saw some guy with Toxic Seahorse totally fuck up a Koopa player with that bullshit teleport and the acid bubble spray. Anything that didn't get one-shot had its armor save raped, which meant another hit would take it out.

Just because the Robot Masters and Mavericks all have that weakness/advantage hullabaloo doesn't mean that those attacks are useless against things that don't have elemental weaknesses.

Overcharge is worth it. Unless it's a fucking met, there is no squad surviving that.

Besides, don't forget about Magna's other abilities. He can drain, he's got more health, etc. Magna > Magnet Man imo.
    >> Kitty-Moogle-Chan 12/02/08(Tue)00:42 No.3097183
Seconded. People look at those and somehow think Frankenstein's Monster is better than Gutsman. WHAT? NO.

Gutsman costs less. That's more important for utility. Oh, he's bulkier. Oh, he's got Leap.

What's frank do? Hit harder in melee. Fuck that shit. You're never getting either of them into melee with anything that isn't going to cut your shit up before you get to attack.

If you want something that can throw terrain around AND blast people, I have no idea. What DO you do now? Take Bowser? Spam magikoopas? Does anything other than koopas and like, Samus, have terrain destroying abilities?

Link, Vic Viper, Mario. And, the most obvious one: almost every weapon on a worms list.

Are solo-Samus lists viable now? It used to be possible to fill your entire points quota with abilities for her, but at a certain point you stopped getting your money's worth.
    >> Anonymous 12/02/08(Tue)00:50 No.3097235

One thing nobody ever remembers about Protoman is that he also has overcharge, much like a maxed out X. And no, it's not a shitty repeatable overcharge like X and some of the mavericks, it's a one shot sacrificial overcharge that can hit across the table and instant-kill ANY model with the exception of final bosses.

Works great on Dracula, King, and Sigma, since it brings them straight to second form, or finishes off the second form. That is a 300+ point attack there amigo! And protoman is like what? 50 points with all the war gears?

Seriously, I don't even equip protoman with any war gear. He is there for one purpose only, ambush, overcharge and then wipe out the enemy's HQ and anything standing near it. Protoman routinely make back 5 to 10 times his point cost if you know how to use him.
    >> Anonymous 12/02/08(Tue)00:53 No.3097258

The only problem with Protoman is his frailty. Seriously, he is only slightly harder to kill than a Joe, and that is horrible considering he's a hero character.

The centerpiece as in he's the set-up for your combos. You can abuse Sonic Slicer's bouncing to force really tricky saves, or Overcharge it to drop a rain of Slicers.

He's strictly setup, though. Even if the Slicers can ignore most armor types, the damage is pitiful.

You do know that Ideon can be destroyed right? And if he dies, you lose automatically since the galaxy is destroyed too.

Ideon is so costly that you only have enough point left for one or two more models, and even then you can only use Ideon in very large scale games. Ideon's attack also does not instant-kill final bosses, only bringing them to second forms.

Now, one Ideon versus 3 Sigmas, Ideon will die first.

Well, since universe reset is a rather confusing outcome for both sides, the Super Robot War supplemental codex states that if Ideon is destroyed, you lose.

This makes sense, since if you field Ideon, your purpose is to protect the innocent. By assuming the role of heroes, you fail when everything in existence is nulled and voided.

You are doing it fucking WRONG! Ideon can't be fought against head on, and SRW isn't tournament-legal.

The right way to fight an Ideon list is to kill its pilot or its source of power. Ideon's power source is always the weakest unit on the table. So if you see a puny but heavily defended unit, snipe the fuck out of it!

To make sure your opponent is not baiting you with decoys, bring Joes, lots of them. Joes are the absolute cheapest sniper of the game, and it doesn't matter because the units that can qualify as sources of Ide will die with one hit of anything.

It's fucking awesome how well the units work together, I mean, pair a Heavy and a medic together and you're almost unstoppable when it comes to face armies like Koopa Swarm!

Eh, Agatha gets fielded too much and I can't find any of the older Heterodyne models. And don't even get me started on that whole time-travel bullshit they put in during the last codex.

On that note, you tried fielding a Wulfenbach Jaeger squad under the new rules? They make Hoom's look like a bunch of goombas. It's sad how quick they can take out an enemy force. Even without fielding Gilgamesh or Klaus to buff them you can take some serious shit down.

Somebody mentioned terrain destruction, Madboys -can- pull it off but it's a roll of the dice if it doesn't backfire and kill half your army. I don't like how low a unit count you end up with. I prefer a horde myself.

Then again, I just use Zapp Brannigan and Endless Redshirts until all your people stop fighting out of exhaustion or they run out of ammunition. It works against killbots, so why not against everything else?

I think the Zero set wasn't that popular, but it has a lot of potential. Omega has three forms, and the final one is ridiculous in terms of what it can do.(Original Zero with all upgrades and 7 attacks instead of 3? Fuck yes)

It takes a bit of work, and they're vulnerable to a lot more stuff than the X-generation set, but the four generals and copy-x more than make up for it.

The Battle Network set was just all shit though, except for the second line.
    >> Anonymous 12/02/08(Tue)03:07 No.3097856
Yeah, but all it takes is one good spy to infiltrate and take down Zapp, which automatically forces all your units to take leadership tests, and we all know how well the redshirts fare when it comes to that.
    >> Anonymous 12/02/08(Tue)03:09 No.3097861

Yes, but I can force Kip to make any dice roll that Zapp would normally take. Granted, he takes up an HQ slot as well and is horribly death prone because of this rule, but he's absolutely perfect as a bodyguard for the guy.

Let me direct you to the very simple but very annoying combo:
    Torchmen + Castle Heterodyne.

Torchmen down your ships with auto-penning hits on 6's regardless of armor, your redshirts serve only to provide the castle with neverending glee as the madboys inside turn them into constructs... until one makes a mistake..

I've been thinking of running some Fun-sized portable death and despair engines in my larger point armies but they become useless when Castle loses structure points

If you want drills, you need to field Gurren Lagann. Its Drill counts as a piercing attack and on a 6 its an instant kill. The main problem is that it has to have all its component pieces, which means you have one big target. I find adding Naruto and using his clones to soak up damage work well.

Oh, the army wasn't designed to hold the line, only to get in, take what's not nailed down, and leave before it gets too deep in the engagement. But that is a good idea for a variation. Can't go wrong with air pirates. I think I remember some old set that had a flying aircraft carrier and pirate lord I could use with her...

Too bad Eva lists are completely nerfed by a well built Getter list. I mean seriously, throw out Shin Getter at 20%, and then mix and match between the Getter 1, Getter 2, Getter Dragon and Getter Liger and you've got a near unstoppable force. Hell, Getter 2 and Getter Liger's Bunshin special ability makes them invincible if you roll well.

Counter his propaganda cannon with the hero character Elza... eh... Ratsel (represented by any mech unit painted in a distinctive color scheme).

Ratsel is an amazingly versatile unit, whose point cost and tactical usage varies greatly depending on the model you play him as. As an experienced pilot/ship captain/chef, he is perfect for any role.

But the most important role is to improve your morale and reduce the enemy's. No puny propaganda cannon can resist his ability to override the theme music of any enemy, up to and including final boss models.

The problem with those is the instability. Roll bad with a Spark army and you're fucked thanks to malfunctions. Nothing like having your hero character lose half their wounds to a frickin grunt that decides to go boom when you give it a move order. And if you want a "safe" level of malfunction rolls, you have to take a hero that costs so many points the rest of the army suffers for it.

Oh, and to the OP- anything that'll over-ride terrain hoses Flame Mammoth, or go with the generic Mushroom Kingdom list. It's a little more costly but it lets you put a decent hero in with the army at the cost of animosity rolls. BFD. Use any Kingdom hero's multiple-jumps off a successful Jump attack ability, force a few sacrifical Koopas on your own side (animosity makes hitting your own units legal) to auto-fail their defense rolls, and just bounce a unit so high and far in one turn it curbstomps Mammoth into the dirt. Tanooki or Super Suit works perfectly, cause the knockback and extended jump will slap Mammoth right into your Koopa horde, where he'll get tooled to death from sacrifical Koopa shell hits at pointblank. Do the jump setup right and you'll even have a Koopa shell or two from the multi-jump plowing into your enemy's army for good measure, though the scatter may mean you don't hit what you aim for.

Smash Brothers isn't tourney legal, dude. And if you CAN use it, you're much better off with a line of Ice Climbers tying up the other guy's melee units, while you blast away with Landmasters.

Falcon's speed and punch ability are impressive, but he rarely makes his points back, and can only be transported in the Blue Falcon. (Not like i'd pay for a Blue Falcon kit anyway!)
    >> Anonymous 12/02/08(Tue)23:00 No.3102841
If you're playing a Smash list as static you are DOING IT WRONG.

Mobility's their big strength. And while the Blue Falcon is an expensive kit and very specialized, it's totally worth it and makes the Captain into a freaking monster. Its Rapid Embark combined with Captain Falcon's ability to assault from transport means you can just speed from hotspot to hotspot, assaulting every turn unless you get bogged down with Hammer Brother Equivalents.

Plus using Landmasters means you can't use Arwings. If you use those for support you can really compensate for the shortcomings of a really mobility-oriented Smash list. It sounds gimmicky but it's nearly unbeatable. (Which is why it's not tourney legal!)
    >> Anonymous 12/02/08(Tue)23:05 No.3102868
You better be praying to the dice gods you aren't up against an Unreal army. Dodge jump will let them hop circles around you with out having to worry about being hit by anything other than the assault rifle, and lets face it, that thing's a piece of crap.

That's nice and munchy and all, but the Castle takes up so many of your points (and Torchmen aren't that cheap either) that you don't have enough left in most games for anything really fun. A real strength, and most of the fun, of Spark lists is the variety and the fact that the other guy rarely knows what to expect from your weird shit.

AND you have to pay for Agatha. You can't even field a proper list like that in most games unless you're really bare bones.

Besides. Jagers are way more fun to paint.
    >> Dr. Baron von Evilsatan 12/02/08(Tue)23:14 No.3102905
It's like nobody here ever heard of a Dead Space army. Saving a few dozen points by removing the Grpahic Violence perk? Everyone does it, because who needs to blow parts off to win?

    That's right, YOU.

Shit, all I need to take is a few Necromorphs, give them the Insane upgrade, and they are completely unkillable in melee OR ranged by anyone without it. Oh, sure, they're expensive, but if you can't kill even one, and you can't, I win.

Even against one of the armies with the High Gibs upgrade I can still win so long as there's enough cover and I take the Hive Mind for more control options.

Speaking of which, what's with the complete lack of heavy terrain these days? It used to be everything was tight corridoors and enclosed office blocks. Now every single campaign map has at least one wide open killing field, and some are just ridiculous. Why not just fucking give the win automatically to Shooter armies. Just yesterday I played against a Halo army in a campaign, and nearly the entire fucking thing was open killing grounds. 'Oh, the rulebook doessn't force you to deploy a specific amount of terrain'. Anyway, game night and I decided what the fuck, I'm busting out Drac. Didn't do bad but not great either. Troops are going out of style right now, we're into another cycle of really small hero-based lists. Of course solo hero lists autolose to Drac unless they can SOMEHOW kill Shaft before Marked for Death + Capture the Soul goes off.

I think I'm going to have to show these herofags what some good old-fashioned spam looks like. I saw a lot of Zero/Proto/Shade, some solo Samus (that was lulzy for drac), too many single-set armies. What happened to guys trying to make GOOD LISTS?

One thing I've been debating doing is using Astarte and Adonis instead of Shaft. The two of them cost roughly the same, actually have combat abilities, but there's a small annoying group of things they do nothing to. Still, it's funny to see Adonis grab Samus, Astarte grab Zero, and the other hundred or so points of their army shit bricks and die.

    Against an idiot, maybe.

There's been times when good players take the 3rd edition upgrade, with recharging shields and heatlh, which means you have to kill an enemy with the Protagonist ability in one fucking turn. Sure, it means that's the onlyt unit they get, but then they'll take the Sniper Rifle and rape your units from way beyond range, or even worse, if they can afford a Fuel Rod Gun.

Speaking of protagonists, has anybody really used the FEARguy? He looks very potent, considering partial regeneration and health upgrades as well as a colossal potential arsenal, but that Reflexes ability looks godlike. Once per game get a second turn immediately after the first? The enemy has to spend the entire game planning every single one of their moves as though you'll get two turns, so even if you don't use ti it's already nearly paid back its points, and if they forget it even once you can rape them mercilessly.

And hell, it's not like you can count on Alma as a counter, because half the fucking time once you hurt FEARguy she'll wipe out your entire fucking army in a matter of turns. Thank fuck she isn't a conventionally deployable character.

FEARguy is awesome, though I only played him in a crossover brawl-style game along with J.C. Denton, Malcom, and the System Shock 2 guy (OSA set up). I've been itching to try him alone but the chance hasn't come up.

Easier said than done. Half his weapons have scopes for increased range, and if he sees your snipers and activates the Reflexes ability, his accuracy becomes batshit insane and your guys are dead. Even if he forgets they're there, you have to get him in a single shot headshot or get raped if he's taken so much as a single health boost. He once managed to take out every single one of my Hive mind's weak spots in one turn of shooting, from 48", with a fucking ASSAULT RIFLE. At that range that's a -4 fucking BS penalty, and he still hit with every single shot for maximum damage.

Guys! Leaked part of a spoiler from Legends of Hyrule! Apparently, there's only going to be one configurable version of Link, while the rest are pre-painted and assembled.

    05. Young Link with Boomerang
    06. Young Link with Bunny Hood
    07. Young Link with Razor Sword
    08. Deku Scrub Link

We also got an incomplete statcard for one version of Adult Link.

    Humanoid - Hylian - Hero
    Alignment: Good
    Allegiance: Hyrule
    Movement: Walking - 8 Squares
    HP: 35
    Actions: 4
    Armor: -2 Universal, 0 Fire, -4 Necrotic, -4 Radiant
    Initiative 4
    Evasion 9
Slash (1 Action, Melee - Cutting, Adjacent) 2D+2 to hit, 1D8+1 damage.
Followup Slash (1 Action, Melee - Cutting, Adjacent) 2D+1 to hit, 1D6 damage. Combo from Slash.
Finishing Slash (1 Action, Melee - Cutting, Adjacent) 2D to hit, 1D6 damage. Combo from Followup Slash.
Charge Whirlwind Slash - (2 Actions) Link's Initiative changes to 2 and his Speed changes to Walking - 3 Spaces.
Whirlwind Slash - (1 Action, Melee - Cutting and Radiant, All targets within 1) 3D to hit, 2D10 damage.

I'm really liking how this one's statted. Profile 9 seems a little high, but Link is a fairly small target compared to other characters, and he's good at dodging. I kind of scratched my head about the low HP and Armor, but resistance to Necrotic and Radiant is nice. 4 Actions and all those combo attacks make him a great close attacker, but it's unfortunate that this version has no projectiles. In addition, I've seen the sculpt on this one, and it's really good, even if it's a prepaint. Comes on a green base with a golden Triforce symbol on the bottom.
    >> Dr. Baron von Evilsatan 12/03/08(Wed)00:22 No.3103263

You mean Marco McOnehealth? There's a reason his respawns are that cheap. He barely even qualifies as a Protagonist anymore.

Anyway, from the looks of things, FEARguy is probably best as a Protagonist killer. He's tough enough to take a few shots from strong guns, and the Reflexes ability gives him two chances to kill an exposed character, the second with no movement or distance penalties whatsoever and automatic BS8. It's easy enough to cancel the Protagonist protection with the first round, and if you do it's an easy kill. If you don't, then you just don't have to activate Reflexes that turn.

Truth be told, he'd probably get hammered badly by a horde force. It doesn't matter if Reflexes lets you Headshot ten grunts in one turn if there's still twenty more.

They'd fucking better if he's also going to get the option to take a Mech. Can you imagine that? A Mech PLUS Protagonist PLUS Reflexes? There'd be no way to balance that in the game outside of Apocalypse.

I heard they're not going to count the lore from the two codex expansions, though. That's a pity, since they weren't that bad. I guess it just interfered with their intended direction, so retcons ahoy. So long as they don't get so bad as the Blizzard codex did I'll be happy. They should consider keeping some of the upgrades too, especially the Laser Rifle. A reasonably balanced Laser weapon with a fun effect? It's about damn time.

A lot of people are going to suggest various Mushroom Kingdom or Hyrule lists, or unfluffy cheese combos like that Evangelion/Wolfenstein/Tron army I saw posted here the other day. But if you're new, stay away from the combo lists since it's easy to fuck it up if you don't know what you're doing. If you want to go with 'Vania armies that's cool. You could also go for a MGS list, I hear the All Snakes Only army is very effective.

Best way to compensate for the Masters' elemental vulnerabilities? Pokemon. I find the best tactic is to surround the Masters I field with cheap pokes of the opposite type. That way, if your opponent uses elemental attacks, they'll do nothing but hit a wall of meatshields that just shrug them off.

A lot of people will flame me for suggesting the "angry sun rampage" list to people looking to get into the hobby, but it has no glaring weaknesses and isn't as unfluffy as most 'almost all-rounder' armies (which have some set of tactics worked out before the game starts and can use them against most things with success)

Mushroom kingdom fast-attack army. Angry Sun as either a support or heavy unit (heavy if you buy it the Respawning option), and then either a Wiggler platoon as fast support or a Boo Wheel as a heavy. Then you want paratroopas as your regular troops, despite the statistical inefficiency of them, because if you can get an army capable of doing a fast move with every unit on the first turn, they can all stay inside the angry sun's rage radius and thus negate all the penalties associated with fast/flyer units getting up-close and personal.

From there, you're within range for using fast units with decent firepower but poor range, and the angry sun doesn't have to hang back for even one turn. If the enemy tries crushing melee with you, angry sun can move in to support, and wigglers move into any opening that's left. If they're shooting, the boo wheel is all but immune to that and plays the "stay out of range" game with their fire support to stop it getting within range for the best shots.

Angry Sun lists are easily counterable by Sephiroth, the Moon from Majora's Mask, and my personal favorite, the GDI Ion Cannon. As a GDI player, I have a lot of options for taking down Shroomer armies. Hello grenadier and Orca spam.

You're playing Genome Soldiers wrong. Look, if you're playing an Assault scenario their range penalty is removed (but why would you field Genomes in Assault? Just take Raging Raven, you get Raven UAVs for 25pts each) and if you're playing Base Defense, you just buy surveillance cameras and laser grids.

A cheap trick you can do is put Genomes into Castle Heterodyne or other bases that count as having an all-seeing intruder detection system (like Aperture or the Citadel Station). Then they count as being on Alert mode ALL THE TIME. Not tourney legal, of course, but good for a few laughs at the LGS.
    >> Anonymous 12/03/08(Wed)05:59 No.3104438
Oh-ho yeah. How do you stop an Angry Sun from charging?
Hell, even Whispy Woods can slow alot down if you've got the foresight to plant it in a good position for its Blowback since it can't move and all. That and its gotta be in a good enough position where my guys can get to it for heals when they need it. I'd write him out if I could get my hands on a Cook Kirby or Chef Kawasaki since they can move AND heal.
Although, I admit Whispy does make a good wall. I've seen mine take 2 Dragonite Hyper Beams and still stand (Dude rolled kinda low for damage, but still, that's impressive) Its Fire weakness just kinda drags me down in my Angry Sun heavy local meta.

Bitches don't know about my DR ROBOTNIK LIST!

But isn't robotnik shit? I hear you say! Not if you use a S&K Robotnik - Silver Sonic - Metallix list (Yeah I know, Silver Sonic is crazy rare, I only use him because I managed to get lucky and drew him in my third booster.) then all of sudden SHIT IS SO CASH.

Robotniks robot control rules basically allows SS and Metal to have TWICE as many turns as everybody else on the board (sure Mother Brain can do that with space pirates, but only in her first form, and that thing can't move and can barely fight)
But this is hardly a new trick, people have been doing Metal Sonic x 2 Mecha Rider Robotnik lists for ever, but the key is if you use S&K robotnik, the Robot Sonic Decoy rules basically double Robotnik's coverage AND his survival chance AND let you field Knuckles on your side (and we all know how Hax his terrain control rules can be. I remember rolling Flood Gates Switch with that guy at the start of the game once, I was against a Magmar - Fireman - Alucard list. I damn near won the game before the first turn.)

Metallix is probably the best of the metal sonics out there, the fastest and the hardest hitting, his hologram decoy rules can have opponents tearing out their hair trying to catch him. The guy can also kidnap support characters.

As for Silver Sonic, well he's basically like a straight Metal Sonic but trades toughness for speed, which coupled with Robotniks control rules he's usually able to get into the opponents units by the first turn.

I have been thinking about swapping him for a S&K Metal Sonic (those super form rules look SWEET) but I cant have Knuckles on the same list as him so...

    >Good luck keeping that fucker alive.

It's dooable though. Especially if you target someone with the one-liner skill (Dante's a pretty good example)
Though the threat of Nemesis is pretty good for cranking the tension up and making him save his one-shot insta-kills 'just in case'.

Also that list would get raped against things like Samus or Isaac Clarke. Those guys have got WAY to many stacked bonuses designed to take down big badly armoured stuff that has to rely on their regeneration rolls. Isaac's dismemberment skills can lock down your attacks like nobodies business.

Heaven help you if you try this against a Contra/Probotector list. (It still makes me lol a little how they made the Probtector units a Europe only special release.)

Realy? Am I the ONLY one who plays a Earthbound set? Comon guys, Ness and the others don't have much in the way melee but just look at those specials!
Ness deals mediocre damage but in a 10 hex radius... A 10 HEX RADIUS! That's guaranteed to hit like 1/2 of your opponents guys!
Paula can only take like 2 hits but can dish out hardcore elemental damage. Realy if you Spam PKIce alpha every turn nothing can even get within 3 hex.
Jeff throws rockets like a madman dealing HUEG DAMEGE! to anything in the impact area all tho his accuracy sucks balls...
Then theres Poo, He's keeps his own HP but turns into one of your opponents units. Realy it can get broken if you copy something like a Mushroom kingdom Bullet-Bill, not only totally overrunning other models, but surviving to do it over and over? Yeah, but Isaac *could* manage it. Look, no-ones going to be playing him solo, that's just not how he works, but with the right right upgrades he deals out a shitton of damage, can reduce or outright restrict your attacks and is cheap enough for you to field other stuff.

I mean Isaac's worth it for ability to shoot whilst grappled alone. A Contact Beam/Plasma Cutter build could solo any one of those guys on your list.

Not all three. But certainly any one.

Oh, sure, range 6" and S3, but with his Protagonist ROF bonus giving it Assault 8 it's savage, especially when combined with Dismemberment. That's eight chances to roll a six right there, and so much as one will kill most grunts and force a Protagonist to use their Protagonist save or watch their stats plummet.

This works even better against Horror enemies, since they're overwhelmingly Melee-based, and he's got the highest tier of Psychological Resistance you can take without the Sociopath or Inhuman traits to utterly destroy them. As long as you're careful to not let them into Melee, since he's only S3 with no bonuses which is useless.

It's not really a full-time list, though, since any Protagonist or even Antagonist with a decent ranged weapon can tear him apart.

Plus, it's cheap enough for me to take two Tentacles to utterly rape Protagonists without any ranged attacks. The big fat Weak Point disadvantage is meaningless if they can't hit it, and unless you roll crappily for your Drag, they've only got one or even no turns to react.

    What Edition GDI?

Oh god a Lemming list... FUCKING LEMMMINGS! Everytime I use them they fall off some terrain and die... But then I see a swarmer use it and eat the board

Dude everyone loves EB.Dungeonman in particular is worth building around anytime the terrain isnt light so he can get around

I remember my first game using Dungeonman as a n00b marveling at his awesome killing power and then getting stuck behind a few god damn trees having to go on without him. That sucked
