So I'm designing a sci-fi setting, /tg/, and I'm kind of stumped. The current premise is that recieves a sudden FUCKHUEG technological leap, due to an alien race (Greys, lol) sending a massive fleet to Earthspace.. right before a fleet-wide killswitch is activated and their heads explode. Problem is most of the technological leap is in spacecraft, obviously.

Also, they learn that the galaxy is a hostile place. There is a race of psychic creatures out there running most of the show, mostly because they have a psychic "virus" that affects most of the galaxy so they become docile and obedient. They use this army to obliterate any race that does not obey them.

Anyway, we find out that on Pluto there is a Grey cloak that has been keeping the Sol system hidden from the rest of the galaxy, and most of the transmissions from the galaxy hidden from us (so we don't go investigate too early), but without the Greys to maintain it, it'll cease functioning in 100 years.

Now there's more to it, but the question is what does mankind do for 100 years? Aside from a build up and whatnot. I've got some ideas, some vague ideas and groups for politics and intrigues and shit, but I suck at that stuff, and don't know what to do with it.

    tl;dr sci-fi political intrigue halp

Assuming the Greys tell them what the evil tyrant race does, study psychic warfare tech. Alternatively, psychic shielding.

as for now... Is the UN Still around? What about the colonization of other planets? How's that going?

Watch Macross. Basically, humanity wars against itself for 10 years over the same stupid shit, then pulls together as one united government, reverse-engineers the tech, and by the end of the 100 years, is as ready as the Greys are.
    >> Anonymous 11/27/08(Thu)19:54 No.3074600
    fucking homebrew shit nobody cares
    >> Anonymous 11/27/08(Thu)19:58 No.3074618
Adapt very quickly. Figure that in the space of a decade they'd have reverse engineered the technology completely and begun expanding on it/modifying it to their own purposes. Another decade would turn out a group of people from techs to soldiers well equipped to employ said technology, and another 20-30 years would see stable enhancements to a lot of it. If they know about the threat from afar, they'd spend the entire time studying their enemy for weaknesses and learning how to fight in space, likely looking for the kind of tactics the alien race would be weak to.

The biggest problem, I figure, is simple manpower. Stage this in a situation where the earth really did hit it's population limits, and then the arrival of this space fleet provided real way to solve it, and then add in a hundred years worth of expansion into the mix.

I have a suggestion. Why have the Greys die from a "killswitch" ? Personally I'd find it far cooler that, despite their huge technological advantage and amazing scientific advances, they are massacred when the earth's military just nukes the living hell out of them. The leap in science result from us investigating the subsequent debris.

To summarize, why should we have to ride on the coat-tails of other "more advanced" races? Our own unique history and scientific advances should be played up - we are the most bloodthirsty and ingenious race in the galaxy, no-one even realized the dangerous and practical application of nuclear fusion.

I'd say that such a radical shock would initially cause humankind to unite under one banner, but as shock wears off people start to drift apart. Not too much- the possibility of alien invasion becomes very real- but the whole reason they united was self preservation, and as the probability is relatively low they tend to extend their reach a bit. So the UN consolidates power but there's still old grudges and animosities, local problems like ethnic tensions are still possible etc. As long as aliens aren't interfering humans will still consider problems between themselves as more important.
The alien fleets' arrival causes the initial consolidation of UN power but once everything becomes clearer individual nations begin bantering over who gets what- it doesnt matter who the fleet belonged to, the earthlings are going to argue over who gets it all like two hobos over a dropped sandwich. Humanity is at once giddy at the idea of harnessing this tech but afraid of what will happen if the owners of the fleet show up.
Aaaand that's all I can think of now, trying to do a paper on the history of Hong Kong.

Would be an interesting event. Have Earth celebrate that, In the time of a week, the Entire Earth banded together, jury rigged all their nuclear targetting software onto weather and Spy satellites so they could target the greys, and started pummeling the shit out of them when they got just outside the orbit of the Moon. Why outside the orbit of the moon? Not much gas.

Er, forgot to mention the psychic race's distrust of races that weren't their favored slave races. The Greys were effectively leaving to mount a rebellion, and the fleet's "political officer" triggered a nasty suprise.

And mankind won't be riding other race's coattails after this period, but they need a legup against an established galaxy.

At least part of it might be a breeding program. Assume that the tendency toward psychic power is at least somewhat heritable through nuclear DNA; any time you have someone who shows signs of psychic power, take samples of his and his parents' genetic material, and track outcomes. If the potential power observed in someone young turns out to be real, train him and mark his genetic code as CONFIRMED. Mix and match his genome with that of other CONFIRMED subjects, in hopes of manifesting psychic skill more dramatically. Using nuclear transfer wizardry, put your F1 DNA into a zygote and offer it for a nominal fee to women seeking fertility help (in the place of their own zygotes, for a little grimdark).

Track outcomes for those kids. If they turn out psychic, clone and mix their DNA, farm out the F2 zygotes to clinics, rinse, repeat.

People who fail out of the training program but still show minor psychic power should probably be in high demand as actuaries for insurance companies.

Also, the subsequent "Um.. well, they all died. Christ war is hell" attitude when bits of spaceships and dead alien rained down on earth rallied people together to create a more benevolent society.

Like I Peter f hamiltons judas unchained novel, the aliens are far behind humans in almost all technological feilds except for their one unique technology, energy sheilds.

Okay, maybe change it to a month or something. Though having the thought of the folks who inspect the pictures that the Hubble Telescope has taken find a bunch of pictures of Grey Ships with what OBVIOUSLY look like guns (though this is not as probable. Why does a Grey weapon have to look awfully similar to a human gun?) , not to mention that a few of their projects sent off into space got either fired upon by grey ships, or flung off into space because they got too near a Grey mothership or something.

    Power groups that emerge:

Velvet Curtain: This group seeks to put humanity's head in the sand, so to speak. Get rid of radio tranmissions and other emanations that would make humanity stand out, and continue ignoring the galaxy. Bands together with ecoterrorists to knock out comm infrastructure.

Eco-terrorists: Many many groups surface, demanding more attention be paid to Earth's restoration before they try colonizing other planets, with varying amounts of zealotry and focus.

United Earth Industries: Group of corporations who encourage expansion and development, but want to become.. well, megacorporations basically. They have contracts for much of the relevant work.

Order of the Golden Star: Group of military officials who believe that mankind will need a firm hand to guide them in a hostile universe, wanting to put more and more and more under military control.

Majestic 12: Area 51 on steroids. Obsessed with alien technology, has technology that *didn't* come with the fleet, and is sometimes randomly aided by Men In Black, who are *not* part of MJ12.

The Last Kings: Old governments and power groups who want mankind to expand outside of earth, while they reclaim power and money planetside and expand in the wake.

There could be factions who don't really know just how to best use the technology; there's still problems on earth to deal with but mankind needs to figure out how to keep themselves stable as well as staving off a galaxy wide threat. Logically speaking mankind would be wiped out as soon as that cloak dropped if they're going against the combined resources of a whole or majority of the galaxy.
The thing is you need to figure out what these spaceships do. Are they strictly military? Even then there'd be databanks, supercomputers with wealths of intelligence, hooked up to some kind of internet with the total sum of grey knowledge. So theoretically they could still make leaps and bounds in other fields but at a slower pace due to translation problems.
But if the Greys deliberately cloaked Sol then it means they probably were monitoring us as a species to protect from outsiders. So they might have tech to bridge the gaps between human and grey language.
    >> Anonymous 11/27/08(Thu)21:36 No.3075100
If enough spaceships showed up to make space travel accessible at pennies a glass, alot of the familiar technologies developed earth-side would see budget allocations first; solar power farms and other various resource gathering.

Assume water, comestibles, and energy became available in global surplus levels.

A LOT of resources would go to hedonistic products and services. Specifically, with our current resources we've made a cure for erectile dysfunction but not for HIV. If we have infinite resources, our usual priorities would become supercharged, not changed.

Humanity would not integrate. China would want to be the leaders in order to appear stronger before their own people and consolidate party power. Russia's dictator-du-jour would be too paranoid to allow others control. America would be serving and protecting corporate interests first.

Alot of where we would go as a race depends on who gets how much of the technology.

If it came to war, differing Rules of Engagement would prevent countries from integrating in a unified front. Humanity would all fight the aliens, but not in the same way by the same playbook and timetables.

If I was to present this scenario to my players, I would put them in an Illuminati style Cabal that's trying to get them to work cohesively without allowing the cohesion to show beyond circumstantial evidence.

With 100 years of more advanced tech to deal with humanity would have infinitely more weapons to play with. all the loot we grab from the "greys" would advance our space tech sure but just that would have influence in our computers and general computing powers.

In this universe ai could be a reality along with Ghost in the Shell style interwebs. However I'm sure humanity would say FUCK YEAH and promptly have a civil war with it self.
