I guess that this map is based on the revelation that the Allied States of America lied about the origin of the attacks (though they themselves didn't cause them) having a dramatic but hardly conclusive effect. There was probably a war and then a stabilization of the lines.

The West Coast, originally united under the ASA, could conceivably have broken off under the aegis of the powerful economy of California. However without LA or San Francisco, that high ranking world economy Cali had probably doesn't exist, so it makes the unification of a ASA break-away under that name less likely. Still, the general idea of it is sound enough; that is a region that was implied to be brought under control through deception and recently enough to the revelation of the ASA's betrayal that it would be able to break away.

Definitely don't know why the Deep South(east) and New England would balkanize from the US though. You'd think those patriots would want to kick some ASA butt.

It was a domestic terror attack. No apocalyptic war, instead various major population centers, including ones you wouldn't usually expect (spread out for maximum chaos it seems) were blown up from the ground. There was absolutely no indication that any major country did it but as things were eventually the ASA were able to convince missile command to take out Iran and North Korea. These as immediate targets of opportunity might be more realistic and you can use the setting that way if you please.

We wouldn't commit global suicide just because these cities went up in smoke. The government could in theory survive much worst as well, but the unknown nature of the attack and the fact that it followed a pre-existing plan that Jennings and Rall (defense contractor) created for the government allowed them to take advantage of the ensuing chaos and fracture things. Otherwise US troops would of probably marched West from Columbia and reintegrated the whole nation gradually.

It's not completely unrealistic but it's not implausible either. It's more of a US civil war with the country broken on the wheel by these attacks than about the end of the world. Hell, the setting insinuates that China and Russia immediately go along full hog with the rest of the UN security council to start giving America aid after the attacks. No need to arbitrarily shoehorn in "war, war never changes" into this setting.

I've worked hard on a lot of different kinds of post-apocalyptic settings and I'll tell you what: even in the worst case MAD scenario during the Cold War, even assuming you forget the huge gap there was at the most tense times between the USSR's capabilities and ours, it's absolutely idiotic to think every city of any size and military base will get whacked. Hell I like Jericho because they go for what are probably regional centers rather than "what are the most famous cities". But that's not really a nuclear war. So on topic again, primary targets are the silo control centers (no Dakotas turned into molten glass, there's like two or three control centers for all those silos spread out over the states housing the silos), submarine ports, and SAC bases. Depending on the era your talking about D.C. may even be left so there's someone to surrender (though making it a priority target for morale breaking and communications disruption reasons has it's merits and by the time a missile got there the president would be evacuated anyway). After that you have the largest cities in America to disrupt communications (why New York and LA are pwned). During early MAD days the next targets may have actually been additional population centers as people seem to think, but most of the time it wouldn't be. No deliberate wiping out of population centers themselves (lots of quite large cities and densely populated areas are spared, the biggest cities only taken out to disrupt communication int he first place). Knocking out non-nuclear-related military bases, taking out factories, and wiping out the populace has absolutely nothing to do with nuclear war. That's pre-nuclear thought. The whole point in a nuke fight is to wipe out their nuclear capabilities, that's it. You aren't trying to destroy their means of production or make their population a more manageable size.

Hell in Twilight fucking 2000, which was pretty well researched, their nuclear war deviates from this plan but mainly that they sometimes take materiel targets out over the hugest cities (they don't nuke NYC but instead target New Jersey's oil infrastructure).


Anyways the main part above should give you a better idea of how a full-out nuclear war would function. To take my own state for example they wouldn't even bother with Raleigh or Fort Bragg most likely, though the old old estimates are all paranoid about the whole state getting glassed. Seymour Johnson air force base because it's got nuclear bombers. Then in the final phase of bombing maybe they'd nuke Greensboro because it's a fuel depot. Not even Charlotte's financial center.

In both a full "we've gotten used to how nuke should be used"-thought nuclear war and T2K's limited nuclear war there are states that don't even get nuked a single time, or suffer a single nuke.

Not that any of this is relevant to the map above or the setting it intimates. Read Jericho's wikipedia article if you really want to understand the material this map guy was spinning off from with some of his own ideas.

Hell, I heard a pretty damn good proposal that a permanent super-hurricane along the Mississippi would, by disrupting trade, "break America on the wheel" (that's where I got that line).

It's weird but the nation could survive and restore order even in the face of total nuclear war, theoretically speaking, or it could fragment in the wake of a lesser situation. Of course the benefit situations like Jericho have is that even if the whole world got precision attacked like that simultaneously (an impossibility) everything is still there to get things working again. Hell even if we had a nuclear war, like I've been saying, there would still be factories, military bases, and power plants. The trouble is coordinating the supplies and power all of these places need.

One thing about the map, and Jericho in general, though. Those ground bursts wouldn't have the widespread EMP effect I do believe (though in theory a similarly small number of nukes, detonated aerially above the nation, would while not EMP-frying everything in the country would hit the major power grids and in turn screw things up for the whole country). And even if they did, the US military has all of it's strategic commands intact loaded with communications equipment to help coordinate separated military elements. I don't entirely see how you go from Nat Guard defending FEMA camps to the troops in the West not knowing the legitimate successor to the presidency is still alive for a few months, giving them time to pick a different side.

The Free-States do kind of make since as buffering borders and where the Blue Line of UN peacekeepers used to be keeping the ASA and USA from fighting each other. When the peacekeepers bugged out to UN occupation zones and left the Miss, those states had probably been left in more or less intact condition and no desire to see themselves become a warzone between the two, thus declaring neutrality.

I think there was a show, or perhaps a film, called "Threads" which showed the aftermath of a nuclear war in Sheffield, England and kept skipping forward in time to demonstrate how the after-conflict planning worked. It seemed pretty 'good' in terms of slow recovery, but the top-down command nature it fostered, so the show went, meant that the greater mass of survivors gradually lost the capacity (and need) for higher thought, endangering the recovery.

The president is giving an address to Congress when a carborn nuclear bomb, not some crappy Hiroshima bit but a converted Russian missile, blows up the capital and the other cities shown on the map. Confusion reigns and the Presidential successor (the secretary of something irrelevant) isn't able to get things coordinated again on his side until after a senator with the help of the director of the CIA or homeland security or something, as well as the nation's largest defense contractor, takes over as the "legitimate" government in the West. That's around 2004 or 2006 or something.

This map theorizes that the situation that arises two years after that (the ASA, the Republic of Texas, and the USA separated by UN peacekeepers along the Mississippi) would turn into this situation after nearly twenty years.

I don't know his reasoning, but I guess he thought that the news that the ASA's government lied and blew up North Korea and Iran as a scapegoat would balance out with the fact that the ASA also controls the resource areas to create military materiel and would prevent either side from beating the other. With the USA unable to make headway against the ASA it's up to cut off sympathizers like Texas and California to try to do what they can and deprive the Allied States of more resources. Or something.

I guess the FSA and ISA might of came about while the successor president's government was too busy fighting the ASA to either hold elections or physically control those states if they seceded, so they did.
