Okay, I'm starting a space adventure game in a custom system using custom d20 rules. The system consists of a huge galactic civilization of millions of species and whatnot. Magic is available to 10% of the galactic civ races and there are many varieties of technology. The PC's are spending a lot of time moving around in space in their dilapidated transport, and I need some fun/dangerous/crazy/random random encounters.

A large luxury transport vents it's waste right in your path! A very important piece of the ship is damaged, and it cannot wait to be repaired! One crew member must brave a very literal shitstorm and repair it, or the everyone onboard will die.

    Standard encounters for SPPPACCEE..

    A distresses beacon from a..

    Crippled, drifting ship.
    Lifeboat from a larger ship.
    A tiny outpost or colony.
Drifting person in a space suit.

    Complications..

Everybody is dead! You can salvage what you like, but somebody might have some questions about where you got this stuff.

Pirate Trap! Raiders, pirates or freebooters wait for somebody to come investigate, then pounce, trying to take over your ship.

Hostile Alien! The ship, suit, lifeboat or colony is infested by an aggressive, hostile alien life form.

Battered survivors! People that need food, medical attention or just transport to somewhere safe are still alive. While they can't offer very much in return, it's a way to get safe, legal salvage rights and do a good deed.

A space station that is entirely void of life. Or appears to be. When they dock, everything is as it should be, except that when they look out the windows, it is not orbiting the stellar object it was when they docked. When they take off again, they're in an entirely different piece of the universe. Also their cargo hold is filled with dongs.

The main characters are in their ship, minding their own business when they almost get run down by an asteroid. The asteroid is being accelerated toward an inhabited planet by an immense set of engines. One species is trying to use it to obliterate another species' homeworld. Armies from both sides are battling on the asteroid's surface. Both, however, are relatively low tech and thus the PCs could potentially have a surprising amount of effect on the battle.

As a twist, the species using the asteroid to wipe out the other was originally peaceful, but the other attacked them and nearly drove them to extinction. They are now attempting to exterminate the aggressors out of revenge.

"They come across a strange planet in the far reaches of space. It's not on any of the maps or star charts. They almost fly right into it. Their scans can just barely penetrate the atmosphere, all they detect is a massive amount of biological matter on or near the planet.
They may choose to ignore it or might explore this strange planet. Upon entering the atmosphere they're met with a nightmarish scene. Writhing black tentacles cover the entire surface like some sort of hideous forest. They then detect a massive energy signature. The energy is coming from a massive temple built upon the service, in the temple is a cult of humans complete with black robes, chanting, etc. Upon further investigation they discover the cult is actually worshiping the planet, the planet is just one huge organism. The cult believes that it is a god and wish to use it to 'devour' other planets."
An idea that popped up in an old story seed thread. I believe it applies.

The ship appears to have been looted before, but a through search will reveal that there is a safe hidden in one of the floors. Getting it open will reveal the family's funds and a small toy box.

The toy box will appear to be just an ordinary toy box, but eventually it magically grows and a giant cyborg duck jumps out to fight the party.

The players ship gets hijacked by a technologically superior race, who are able to hack their computer systems using an obsolete distress beacon. They assault the crew in mock-combat, sending in fast-grown bug-eyed aliens (who look nothing like the Superiors) whose only purpose is to keep the crew busy. They die easily enough in combat, their weapons don't seem to damage the ship and never inflict severe damage.

Meanwhile The Superiors seal the crew out of the engine room, and replace said engines with an experimental one that looks exactly and has read-outs exactly the same as the old one, but is in fact much more powerful and uses a totally different propulsion method.

They then let the crew go. All the bug-eyed aliens suddenly grasp their throats simoultaniously and wheeze 'Ack, bacteria!' in perfect <insert players' common language here> before dying. The Superiors then zip off a lightyear or so to watch what happens when the crew unwittingly test out the super-races' cutting-edge propulsion system, which is powered by rumors and bends space by using a Hyperloom, which create new hyperstrings and thus propels the ship by via dimensional pressure.

You pass near an enormous construction site and decide to try and swipe some construction materials.

Your ship picks up a nonstandard beacon, leading you to a spacefaring race's first ever space probe. You intercept it, take the trinkets placed inside it and launch it back to its homeplanet.

Your ship gets flagged by a group of marooned alien soldiers asking for a ride home. Do you take them in?

Your ship detects what appears to be a colossal periodic table floating in space with pure samples of the elements. You get as much of any one element as you can carry.

You find a planet indiscernible from you own home planet at first sight, and decide to check it out. Commence doing whatever you'd do on a planet, with one small difference the players have to find and possibly exploit.

One of the PC's owes a significant amount of money to some guy. He tracks your ship down and shows up with slightly superior firepower.

A group of aliens who admires your race for some unknown reason clings to your ship and begs of you to come down to their planet and visit.

    THERE IS NO ESCAPE

The players have subdued a pirate ship and their landing party moves into it. However, the pirate captain has one last trick in his sleeve: he activates the reactor's self-destruct system, and only he knows the code to deactivate it. Under heavy fire by the pirates, the players are unable to retreat back to their ship, and the temperature rises fast. In the heat of the moment, the captain sees the players' distress, and his heart melts.

On this barren desert planet, the players find the ancient ruins of an unknown civilization. On a wall of a temple, strange carvings can be seen. It's the spitting image of the party's pet cobra.

The players arrive at Bucoothu, a planet with two natural satellites: small moons that are entirely covered in oceans. In the spaceport's bar, the players are told many stories of the hugely valuable crystal found beneath the moons' waves. "Only fools would go there", a one-legged humanoid shouts. He tells the players a gruesome story. Once in a blue moon, a sea monster attacked him out of the blue.
