Okay /tg/ I'm warming up for my new campaign it's in a homebrew generic sci-fi setting and the general premise is that they players are a group of space cowboys hunting for their fortunes in a region of space the untamed frontiers of which are being rapidly replaced by stable colonies. There are several alien species in this setting, none of which are overtly hostile but humans are the most common. It's like Firely with aliens.

I know what I'm going to have my players do for the most part, but I don't intend on railroading them.

So I need sidequests. What little, random points of interest that may offer fame, riches or secrets should I insert? All suggestions welcome. In return various pictures of things.

There's at least one planet that has recently come out of being a hotly contested warzone, cities lay abandoned and the compromised assets of the most powerful local military forces lay abandoned in the ash and rubble strewn streets of towns deemed lost.

I think an adventurous party might reasonably be tempted by the potential to find treasure in the smoking, bandit ridden hell pit, still grudingly policed by the forces who invading it.

    Yeah, space Iraq.

Might have to milk the cliche of the abandoned research base, a petty crook requests they "salvage" some equipment left there not knowing the true nature of the facility, the players progress through it and end up uncovering some dirty secrets about a regional superpower.

They come across a strange planet in the far reaches of space. It's not on any of the maps or star charts. They almost fly right into it. Their scans can just barely penetrate the atmosphere, all they detect is a massive amount of biological matter on or near the planet.
They may choose to ignore it or might explore this strange planet. Upon entering the atmosphere they're met with a nightmarish scene. Writhing black tentacles cover the entire surface like some sort of hideous forest. They then detect a massive energy signature. The energy is coming from a massive temple built upon the service, in the temple is a cult of humans complete with black robes, chanting, etc. Upon further investigation they discover the cult is actually worshiping the planet, the planet is just one huge organism. The cult believes that it is a god and wish to use it to 'devour' other planets.
Just an idea, just throwing it out there.

    >Firefly with aliens

An archeologist hires the party to help/protect him while he studies an Ancients site. For added fuckery he is not an archeologist at all but wants to steal an artifact hidden there by the real archeologist whom he killed.

The party is hired to transport a valuable cargo, no questions asked, into Zhodani space. Turns out its a drug which can give anyone psionic powers permanently. This would of course destabilize Zhodani society if proles had access to psionics. The mind-reading Thought Police already know about the trade and are waiting to fuck the party. If you don't want to make the Zhos out to be totally evil bastards perhaps one of the side effects of the drug is a deteriorating mental state until psychosis sets in.

The party is hired to transport a 'biological cargo' between two worlds. Turns out its human children. The twist is that slavery is not illegal on either world although interworld transporting of slaves IS illegal according to Imperial law. For added fuckery the origination world is an overpopulated shithole. These kids are orphans and if they weren't slaves they would be dead within a month. The destination world is an industrial hive world. The kids will still be slaves working in sweatshops but at least they will be fed and clothed and have the chance to buy their freedom.

I think so. I like it. The new rules from Mongoose are pretty spiffy but low on fluff. There is supposed to be a fluff book out some time. However, Traveller has been published many times in the past so there are other places to go if you want offical traveller universe. I like GURPS Traveller but Traveller: the New Era also holds a special place in my heart as my first.
