Deep Ones are basically Elves with less racism.

They're immortal masterpiece-creating superhumans with art, science, and culture far advanced beyond anything humanity is capable of, who reside in their secluded community that traffics occasionally with special and carefully selected human communities (who regard them as gods, or at least creatures of godlike or angelic stature) to get what few things they can't make on their own. They are more in-tune with nature and the fundamental rules of reality than humans are, and their ancient culture remembers things that we can only dimly grasp with our lizard brains and call "magic." Their art is of a kind fundamentally different from ours on a level that makes the superstitious, xenophobic, and closeminded among us feel unsettled, and their hidden city is more or less safe from all human attack.

They are capable of interbreeding with humans, but UNLIKE elves, they see this as potentially beneficial and perhaps necessary to the continuation of their species. The notion that they might survive when the stars are right and the Great Old Ones return further cements their place; they share aspects of humanity, and through breeding with them, some form of humanity might last forever.

Deep Ones are in many respects the Master Race, and they know it and act like it, but they still know how to benefit from the human gene pool.

They're Elves, /tg/. The Shadow Over Innsmouth was about how humans would really feel about Elves, written from a halfelven but human-sympathetic point of view.

This is also fairly true for The Great Race of Yith. Conversely the Old Ones (race found in antarctica) seem like good guys but are far more supremicist than Deep Ones. The Elder Race (flying polyps), however, just hate everything that isn't themselves.
    >> Anonymous 10/30/08(Thu)23:37 No.2911875
Also, the Deep Ones' society used to be far greater than it is now. Once they contested with the Elder Things (which were crinoid-shaped legendary craftsmen who lived in mountains and perfected engineering but delved too deep into their sciences and unleashed something that they could not control) for mastery of the Earth, but they have been reduced to living in their hidden elf villages where they can be at one with nature, trying to preserve their old ways long enough for them to become great again. Human cultures bumble through the world carving up more and more of it like savages, but the Deep Ones, unlike the Elves, have a plan for returning to their former numbers and greatness that involves, y'know, BREEDING.

So, elves with an I.Q. boost and less prettiness.

I posit that they horrified HPL specifically because they were a superior race that wasn't racist.

Note that the Mi-Go and all the other societies he thought of as more ideal than mankind are pretty racist.

That's why he had the Marines kick them the FUCK out of America. They probably would have been more successful in his story if they didn't involve themselves in misceginating with lowly WASPs.

He didn't think the Mi-Go were ideal, you're thinking of the Great Race of Yith. The Mi-Go were a crawling horror from outside the spheres we know.

He didn't regard the Deep Ones as superior except in terms of capabilities - he created them as something hideous and creepy polluting the good clean New England blood of the people they bred with. This was likely based on his fear of negroes and asians coming over and knocking up all the white women.

    >>2911948

If you're half Deep One by birth you won't show any changes until well into adulthood, so you may 'change' into one, but if you do, you were always one.

There isn't a way to just magic someone into one (unless the keeper wants there to be) but one way around this is to use the mind transfer spell to hop into the body of a hybrid before the change. Not sure if it would work so well on a full-fledged Deep One.

    THE HOSTING OF THE SIDHE

The host is riding from Knocknarea
    And over the grave of Clooth-na-Bare;
    Caoilte tossing his burning hair,
And Niamh calling "Away, come away:
Empty your heart of its mortal dream!
The winds awaken, leaves whirl round,
Our cheeks are pale, our hair unbund,
Our breasts are heaving, our eyes agleam,
    Our arms are waving, our lips apart;
And if any gaze on our rushing band,
We come between him and the deed of his hand,
We come between him and the hope of his heart!"
The host is rushing 'twixt night and day,
And where is there hope or deed as fair?
    Caoilte tossing his burning hair,
And Niamh calling "Away, come away!"

Done properly, Dwarves and Elves are both androgynous - however, Dwarves are all very masculine while elves are all feminine, regardless of their sex. Moreover, Dwarves are the working race - they dig down in the dirt and do hard, difficult work with skill born of experience. The Elves are the "noble" race, who have everything they do because they spent umpteen years getting it all right and now all of their work is done not so much making everything work really well as it is making everything really pretty.

Both Elves and Dwarves are craftsmen. Both do it differently. They are - well, opposite in every way that matters.

I wonder if there's a Lovecraftian equivalent to Dwarves...

Shoggoths would be hard to implement.

Craftsthings would create them somehow, and if they aren't constructed properly or are allowed to get out of their controlled circumstances you'd have what amounts to a tantrumming nonbreathing zombie carp running through your fortress causing a wave of shoggoth revolution, but shoggoths would allow you to build the goddamn mountains of madness in very little time. There is in certain ancient things a trace
    Of some dim essence - more than form or weight;
    A tenuous aether, indeterminate,
Yet linked with all the laws of time and space.
A faint, veiled sign of continuities
    That outward eyes can never quite descry;
Of locked dimensions harbouring years gone by,
And out of reach except for hidden keys.

It moves me most when slanting sunbeams glow
On old farm buildings set against a hill,
And paint with life the shapes which linger still
From centuries less a dream than this we know.
In that strange light I feel I am not far
From the fixt mass whose sides the ages are.

You're anthropomorphising too much. D&D & Discworld gods need belief and power to fuel them, Lovecraftian gods are stranger.

The human cults of Cthulhu are just dumb fucks who saw something powerful and wierd and started worshipping it, for the most part.

The Deep Ones are a bit more aware, have a history going back to when Cthulhu ruled the world, and want to revive him. What they actually *do* down there in Yha-Nthlei is a mystery, but it's probably the equivalent of making sure he has coffee and a bagel waiting for him when he does wake up.

On the other hand, Deep Ones would engage in kidnapping and interbreeding. They also worship Cthuloids that reside in Dark Cities. So, a combination of DF elves and DF goblins.

Cthuloids would be Demons with some heavy bonuses are worshipped by the Deep Ones. Dark Cities would be Dark Towers, there's no need to go all 5-D Space on this.

A Deep One siege would last a long goddamn time as they would keep reinforcing themselves and transporting siege equipment to the battlefield. This would work like trade caravans; "A group of Deep One heavy weapons has arrived from the North." Only they would stop outside the front of your fortress instead of inside the trading depot, and blow away squares of walls and stone. Projectiles that dig and move around on their own? Perhaps. WAR SHOGGOTHS.

Mi-Go would be like kobolds, only instead of taking wealth or food, they take limbs and parts of your Things. A Mi-Go raider would remove a brain, or a spine, or an arm, from the first Thing it can get the drop on.

Now, how would we work the Megabeasts, weapons, and Adventurers? Would the Adventurers be restricted to being human investigators looking around at these ancient sites of horror, or would we get to play as a Mi-Go warrior harvesting the brains of interesting specimens and putting them in jars in exchange for money and upgrades when we return to Yuggoth bases?

Several Deep Ones and hybrids captured in the raid on Innsmouth are still in the hands of the Government - but not even the Government really knows it. They're kept a facility in the Atomic Energy Commission's reserve at Los Alamos known as YY-II, or ICE CAVE.

The Innsmouth survivors have been catatonic since the early 1940s, driven made by their decades-long forced seperation from the ocean and the call of Cthulhu. Their lives are maintained, and they do not seem to age, but nobody beside the personnel of ICE CAVE knows they're still around. Nobody has even asked about the prisoners since the 1960s, but ICE CAVE was charged with storing them indefinitely and store them they do. Access to the prisoners is covered by security clearance COVENANT, a clearance that dates back to 1930. Today, nobody besides the ICE CAVE personnel possesses that clearance; those who had the clearance in years past have long since retired or died, and with the Deep Ones catatonic for so long the clearance has been forgotten by everyone but ICE CAVE.

There are government agents who know about the Deep Ones, and they may know that the government once had living specimens. But of course, they think that's ancient history and those beings must be long dead or destroyed. The forgotten prisoners still live, all but buried in the nuclear catacombs beneath the New Mexico soil.

The ocean is far, far away.

But after all, the attic was not the most terrible part of the house. It was the dank, humid cellar which somehow exerted the strongest repulsion on us, even though it was wholly above ground on the street side, with only a thin door and window-pierced brick wall to separate it from the busy sidewalk. We scarcely knew whether to haunt it in spectral fascination, or to shun it for the sake of our souls and our sanity. For one thing, the bad odour of the house was strongest there; and for another thing, we did not like the white fungous growths which occasionally sprang up in rainy summer weather from the hard earth floor. Those fungi, grotesquely like the vegetation in the yard outside, were truly horrible in their outlines; detest able parodies of toadstools and Indian pipes, whose like we had never seen in any other situation. They rotted quickly, and at one stage became slightly phosphorescent; so that nocturnal passers-by sometimes spoke of witch-fires glowing behind the broken panes of the foetor-spreading windows.

After twenty-two years of nightmare and terror, saved only by a desperate conviction of the mythical source of certain impressions, I am unwilling to vouch for the truth of that which I think I found in Western Australia on the night of 17-18 July 1935. There is reason to hope that my experience was wholly or partly an hallucination - for which, indeed, abundant causes existed. And yet, its realism was so hideous that I sometimes find hope impossible.

The terror which brought me to the scene was a sudden and portentous confirmation of the mountaineers' wildest legends. One summer night, after a thunderstorm of unprecedented violence, the countryside was aroused by a squatter stampede which no mere delusion could create. The pitiful throngs of natives shrieked and whined of the unnamable horror which had descended upon them, and they were not doubted. They had not seen it, but had heard such cries from one of their hamlets that they knew a creeping death had come.

By the autumn of 1914 I began to have infrequent dreams of strange floatings over the city and through the regions around it. I saw interminable roads through forests of fearsome growths with mottled, fluted, and banded trunks, and past other cities as strange as the one which persistently haunted me.

I saw monstrous constructions of black or iridescent tone in glades and clearings where perpetual twilight reigned, and traversed long causeways over swamps so dark that I could tell but little of their moist, towering vegetation.

Once I saw an area of countless miles strewn with age-blasted basaltic ruins whose architecture had been like that of the few windowless, round-topped towers in the haunting city.

And once I saw the sea - a boundless, steamy expanse beyond the colossal stone piers of an enormous town of domes and arches. Great shapeless sugggestions of shadow moved over it, and here and there its surface was vexed ith anomalous spoutings.

My impulse to visit and enter the temple has now become an inexplicable and imperious command which ultimately cannot be denied. My own German will no longer controls my acts, and volition is henceforward possible only in minor matters. Such madness it was which drove Kienze to his death, bare-headed and unprotected in the ocean; but I am a Prussian and a man of sense, and will use to the last what little will I have. When first I saw that I must go, I prepared my diving suit, helmet, and air regenerator for instant donning, and immediately commenced to write this hurried chronicle in the hope that it may some day reach the world. I shall seal the manuscript in a bottle and entrust it to the sea as I leave the U-29 for ever.

I have no fear, not even from the prophecies of the madman Kienze. What I have seen cannot be true, and I know that this madness of my own will at most lead only to suffocation when my air is gone. The light in the temple is a sheer delusion, and I shall die calmly like a German, in the black and forgotten depths. This demoniac laughter which I hear as I write comes only from my own weakening brain. So I will carefully don my suit and walk boldly up the steps into the primal shrine, that silent secret of unfathomed waters and uncounted years.

Not always. The next Halloween my group can actually get together, I'm looking to run a game in which the players play members of the Great Race of Yith, hopping through time to occupy human bodies.
Except that THESE Yithians aren't exactly historians, per se, and aren't really on much of a "research trip".

I had an idea where all the players are Deep One hybrids, waiting for the call to go down to Yha-Nthei. All the PCs would be kind of losers, poorly regarded by the other deep ones. Some would be young and human-looking with a lot to prove, others could be old fuckups who are almost full deep ones and hoping that they'll be taken beneath the ocean soon because if they aren't, they might be killed as a liability. Lots of backstabbing and desperation.

Yeah, maybe. They'd have personal goals, likely based around the reasons why they're failures in Innsmouth society, and they'd also be out to serve the ends of the Order in order to prove themselves.

The obvious one is the old, out-of-favour hybrid.

A young businessman, human-looking and eager to advance in the order, seeing the others as convenient tools. He'd be a good 'face' for the group.

A pair of traditional CoC investigators, lovers - one is a hybrid and doesn't know it.

A human woman, sort of a Deep One groupie, willing breeding stock, wishes she were a hybrid.

Various troublemakers - compulsive rapists, alcoholics, and other unreliable dramaprone pricks.

Got any other ideas? I haven't really thought about it a great deal yet, just liked the idea.

Good idea, but difficult to play.

My other campaign idea was a bunch of people from different walks of life who'd been abducted by the GRoY and returned, which seemed an obvious idea after listening to Shadow Out of Tim.

Some people's lives would be ruined, they'd lose friends and family and careers. Others, well - I had an idea for a pretentious occult type whose mystique would suddenly be enhanced, and for a girl who had been a victim all her life, abused by her domineering father and anyone else who could get away with it, until she was possessed.

I couldn't resist the image of this jerk slapping her around only to find out that his daughter isn't in there anymore, it's something else - something millions of years old, inhuman, and profoundly disinclined to put up with his shit.

The game would deal with the aftermath though, I'd be very careful about letting people play Yithians.

The Raid of 1928 got quite a number of hybrids and Deep Ones, didn't it?

Your guys could be contracted by the Esoteric Order of Dagon to liberate or kill those, not so much to cover up Deep One existence as to prove their loyalty.

Some of them could be the spawn of younger fully human-looking hybrids that were raped by Marines in the raid rather than by the EoD's selection of breeding stock, making the rest of the Deep Ones see them as dangerous or bred with the wrong traits and shun them for that reason.

Some of them could be Ameriboos who think there's too much fun to be had with surface-dwellers to want to ressurect Cthulhu just now, and maybe think that integrating with American society and abandoning the Old Ways would be the way to go--these ones are more human than Deep One, and don't quite get that when they get ugly they'll be hated no matter what their goals are. Their goals might be to disrupt the EoD's practices and get more surface-dwellery into Innsmouth.

All the conspiracy theorists were right, in a way. There was an element of the government that knew 9-11 was going to happen before it went down. This lot were tasked with minimizing it's possibility and importance, despite the repeated warnings of certain government agents advocating a cowboy approach to dealing with that brand of Wahhabi extremists. One of these agents was recorded as saying "it's not like they're really Muslims," which has been interpreted as referring to the drinking and whoring certain 9-11 hijackers engaged in prior to their attack.

In the wake of 9-11, however, the presidency began to listen more and more to the cowboy agents and blamed the agencies working against their interests for the attack. An aggressive, often illicit, scorched earth approach was advocated by these men, and they found a willing convert in their frustrated commander in chief, who suspects that the covert agency MJ-12's failure is more than simple incompetence could explain.

Meanwhile on Yuggoth, buzzing fungal beings congratulate themselves on accelerating their research into humankind while simultaneously instilling an atmosphere of distrust between all the Earth's peoples that will facilitate their operations at least as well as their conspiracy with human agencies that had been set up previously, all while drawing a constant thorn in their side that they know exists among the Earth's governments out into the open where it can be more easily dealt with.

I'd say that they have enough power to cover themselves from political backlash (remember that Bush Sr. was a supporter of MJ-12 in canon, and I can see GWB following his father's policies regarding it)

If they're going down, they're going down from within - people scrambling for personal power in the wake of the event and one or two true believers trying to keep the thing from collapsing. But they would still be out there.

The plot about Elerium-115 being uber rare and useless in water was pretty much in line with the story in X-COM 1, what sucked was the throwing granades in water...

But really, its freaking Cuthulu and X-COM, how could you hate that?

Apocalyse was retro-chic, but in a Judge Dredd Mega-City 1 ridiculious kind-of-way, not in the grim darkness vibe of the first X-COM, which the second one at least 'tried' to stay true to. Bio-Drones were pretty fucked up once you learned what the hell they were..
