Imagine, if you will, a sci-fi/cyberpunk universe where the human genome has been cataloged and preserved...musically.

The term "biorhythm" suddenly gets taken literally as medical breakthroughs take sicknesses to task by correcting "skips" and "scratches" in patients' MeloDNA.

Personal augmentation is revolutionized in ways that would make CP2020 and Shadowrun shit their pants. By recording over a person's "junk measures," all sorts of skills and implants can be imparted with ridiculous ease. Techno beats jack up a person's reflexes, TROMBE! imparts giant robot piloting prowess, cheesy porno jazz boosts sexual performance, and so on.

The PCs take on the role of Mixmasters, unlicensed melodocs able to affect these changes without the need of a sophisticated clinic, magically or otherwise.

FOREHEADS related, she might become a major figure in the fluff.

What I'm planning, however, is total musical war. We're not talking Pop vs. Techno. We're talking Pop (charisma) vs. Techno (reaction) vs. Rock (strength) vs. Metal (willpower) vs. Classical (brainpower) vs. Video Game Remixes (enough variables to cover their own splatbook), and so on, with our heroes walking the thin line between the opulence of the Platinum Council and the savagery of the Deaf Ones.

Generally, hip hop has more varied instrumentals with a discernable melody and the lyrics tend to be structured as a solilliquy. Rap has instrumentals that are more industrialist or deconstructive in nature with lyrics that form a narrative. Since the fall of "true" gangsta rap in the mid 90s and its replacement with "pimp" rap by the likes of Sean Combs, the narratives of rap have become increasingly simplistic (read stupid) while the instrumentals have become more extravagant even without having a defined melody. This change has made rap almost identical to modern pop (and since pop is by definition popular music, and usually pretty bland at that, rap=pop). Thats why I originally asked that rap not be used as the same as hip hop, and I'm sorry if I still sound like a troll.

    >> Anonymous 10/02/08(Thu)01:11 No.2716188
Fuck yes OP this is fucking awesome.

Each major genre of music should be a class, with multiclassing available to follow a mixed genre.

So, if you wanted to be a Bassist utilising the power of Slam Death Metal, perhaps you'd need Extreme Metal (5) and Hip Hop (2) or something.

Oh shit, further specialisation or generalisation could come through instrumental choices.

A mixing deck could be the all-comers, generalist choice giving a wide range of abilities, while something like guitar might have a large offensive bias with few defensive skills, unless you took the right Genre and Subgenre skills to augment it.

So, an Electronica Mixer might be the basic model for someone new to the game. A wide range of skills, abilities and influences at its disposal, it would be perfect for learning the ups and downs.

A more specialised example might be something like a Doom Metal Guitarist. Doom Metal is slow and lacks the aggression of faster genres, instead focusing on heaviness and a stalwart position, making it a very odd, tanky, defensive kind of Guitar Specialisation.

So, we could have two levels of Classes:

    - Instrumental Class
    - Genre Class

Which would mix to provide your specific abilities and stats. Then, you can multitask in one or both if you wish, opening new opportunities, but weakening potential in other areas. We could act on musicfag elitism, too, so you can't mix Shred Guitar with any kind of Hip Hop, and you can't mix Classical Violin with anything, lol.
    >> Anonymous 10/02/08(Thu)01:14 No.2716207
    >>2716163
Electronica is a prestige class for techno, gives you an even greater speed increase, decreases stamina (nerds tend to like it, and you know we're all weedy little fucks), boosts charisma/social attributes with other Techno-faction members, less so with genres that sample from Techno (Rap if it's separate from Pop, Hip-Hop, possibly Jazz, since a lot of Electronica seems Jazz-inspired to me), decreases same stats with Rock, Metal, Folk, genres whose members would see Techno as not analogue enough, too faggoty, whatever. Also, are we going to implement a specific alignment system?
    >> Anonymous 10/02/08(Thu)01:29 No.2716274

    >> Anonymous 10/02/08(Thu)03:45 No.2716852
Does OP mind if I steal this idea (and those associated with it) for my own personal uses? Honestly, it's pretty damned fucking awesome and I love music. I may be stuck up all night thinking about shit.

On a bit of a more related note, would someone be kind enough to compile a list of musical genres and sub-genres, possibly linking to an example of each? I think it would be a great help for this thread if we have both the list of each genre and a set of examples for each genre. Especially with lesser known genres. I don't even know what Reggae or Ska sound like.

    Expanding on some stuff:
I don't think it should necessarily be stuck that one genre does one attribute. It should also be a but more by each individual song. What if you have this techno track, but it's a little slower and heavier than normal counterparts? It shouldn't boost your speed as much. Maybe it could also help defense.

Also, if this is going to be implemented over the internet somehow (IE, forum RP or IM's) maybe one could link to specific files they want to use for their characters, and decisions on stat changes could come off of that.

Another idea: What if lyrics also affected characters? I mean, there are upbeat songs, but they have sad lyrics, or vice-versa (maybe). Look at songs like, uh.... Megadeth's A Tout Le Monde. It's not a slow, sad song. It's rather upbeat, as rock is, but the lyrics are rather saddening. It's about what would happen if the composer (forget who, Mustaine maybe?) We need a drawfag on this. I see a super-cyberpunk scene. Cyberpunk versions of a genre stereotypes. I wish I could draw what I'm thinking right now. A hip-hop musician with a gas mask and some sort of mouthplate. Goggles wrapped up over his head. A digital mixer strapped to his forearm Yu-gi-Oh! duel-disk style. Heavy Metal player with an axe for a guitar. In amplifier built into their mouth noise-marine style. Spiked leather jacket. Techno would be the most cyberpunk looking of them all. Glasses like the black dude from Star Trek: Voyager, Circuitry tattoos running up their faces. USB ports in the back of their necks. When they need to play they drop pods that make a hovering keyboard screen in midar in front of them. Only it would go around them like Zorak in Space Ghost: Coast to Coast

That could be worked into a video game too. A character creation system could let players select different items depending on the class.

Before anyone starts writing up rules, I think some clarification on the system at large is in order.

Remember that the "music as weaponry" part is supposed to be minor at best, the system is supposed to be about "music as transhuman augmentation." Genres are analogous to the races of other systems, hence >>2716852's idea of songs granting multiple bonuses due to variations works. Thus, here's a rough stat idea that focuses on base musical elements rather than genres:

    - Fast beats: Reaction and Initiative. The realm of techno ravers, tribal neo-Luddites (because every cyberpunk system needs Luddites), and anyone who can play "Chopsticks."
    - Slow beats: Defense and Constitution. Country and R&B dominate the field.
    - Heavy bass: Attack and Dexterity. Attacker classes will generally stem from Rock and Metal lineages.
    - Consistent Rhythm: HP and Charisma. Pop, Oldies, and Classical players, while not quite as geared for rollplayan, have the advantage here for roleplayan fast talk and longetivity.

You know what would be interesting twist?

Since we have organizations that seem a little overt. How about one very secret one... comprised of Classical Audiomancers/Mixmasters/GJs? Figured they'd have a fancy name that only the elite few would know. Either something in classical Latin or French, for a classical (for either languages), and ellegant (for the French) feel.

I mean, seriously. You'd see some that secretly hold onto cyberized Violins, or Flutes, or even an arm-strapped keyboard designed to work like a Pipe Organ.

Just getting this out there, but not every drawfag is gonna be able to do the exact same thing. Some of us are going to have been drawing for less time and will scoop a chance like this as practice.

So before you just "shit sucks", at least consider that not everyone is top-notch. At least some of us put an honest effort in and aren't spending a few minutes in pain making some crappy stick figures with text labels and horrible bubbles.

So don't always expect the best drawfags to bow to your feet every time and give you just what you want. Be a little more considerate. I know this is 4chan, but even so, this is (in my opinion) one of the better boards. You can offer up a few pointers, too, instead of just "don't bother".

And don't even bother with shit like "baww some more". I don't care. I'm giving you my opinion, and I don't give a shit what you think about it.

There WILL be pirate radio, though, in the form of unlicensed chop shops (think Shadowrun's Tamanous, your #1 source for ghoul chow).

You know, with the vast varieties of music in existence, this could lead to some serious multiclassing opportunities.

Like Neo-Swing (a personal favorite of mine), which takes 40's swing with its big brass sections and adds a dash of guitar and hot piano.

It would be ordinary music, but have an inordinate number of skips and scratches in it.

Naturally, many victims of bad remixers end up mentally addled.

Except in this world, all forms of metal music are more likely reclassified as military-grade. Not just as weaponry (like >>2715071), but as augmentations for their armies.

Thrash metal are used as musical stimpacks and as boosters to equipment to the point of overloading the power output.

Power metal are similar, except they speed up both physical and mental processes, letting soldiers attain near-teleportation levels of speed, and their weaponry attain increased accuracy, sight range, and sensors.

Doom metal is excellent for interrogations by breaking down the subjects will, and demoralizing enemies. Soldiers subjected to it tend to be unswervingly loyal, though cheerless and GRIMDARK, complete with a propensity to gothic attire.

Speaking of which Black Metal is still being studied, as it is literally a killing music. Research claims that this is achieved by literally summoning "things" from beyond human understanding, "monsters" that can literally drive the subjects to insanity or death.

While Death Metal cuts out the middleman, and encourages entropy, breaking down targets in a violent fashion, often as gory as possible. It is believed a higher (or rather a Lower) power is involved, but no evidence save the disturbing lyrics can be found for this.

White Metal is an anomaly, since it does the reverse of most Heavy Metal music: some of its effects claim to include actually healing the subjects from injuries and diseases. Research is still pending on its benefits, but what is determined is that a side effect includes the gradual stripping of will, and a illogical belief in a so-called Higher Power.

Seeing this list alone: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_heavy_metal_genres I'd say Heavy metal gets its own splatbook SERIES.

Why the tight security? Too much metal could destroy the user.

Metalheads are the new military fanatics.

(Hi, OP. This is a fun idea. Might gank it myself for fluff.)
