Hey /tg/, its Rune time again.

In the last couple of threads (http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/2550678/ and http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/2616123/) We've hammered out the basics of the system, runes, classes and antagonists, as well as choosing a cool name for this game. just making another thread for further discussion and more pooling of ideas. i'll write out the basics in further posts, along with posting the rune charts we've been using. i may be a bit slow, as my head aint working right today.

Last thread, the major topics of discussion were a new layer of runes (Refer to chart, they'd be between the True rune and the inner circle), expanding the mechanics and codifying the fluff, and renaming some of the character types (i.e. changing "Rune" to "Glyph", "Sigil", "Symbol" or equivalent, or an entirely new name).

    Full list of character types;

Runecaster: Basic magic using class, memorising runes and then linking them together to create spells.

Rune Warrior: Combat class, runes inscribed on armour and weapons and activated during combat manouvers.

Runemarked; Magic user who Tattoo's runes onto their body, for a wider variety of effects, but less depth and power.

Rune Dancer; Magic users who memorises runes, but casts them through body movement (i.e. dances). Take longer to cast powerful spells, but can cast minor spells covertly.

Runefist; Martial artist who magically empowers his martial arts via forms and styles based off certain runes.

Rune Crafter; Highly specialised caster, works runes into objects to empower and enhance them.

Rune Priest; Holy caster, worships the spirits and deities of the runes, calls their power via sacrifice of blood.

Rune mimic; Capable of using/mimicking the runecasting abilities of others (to an extent), but incapable of doing anything on their own.

Its the best we got so far. Glance though the last thread to find the other options. Masters of the Mosaic is something I'm pondering, but its kinda long and clunky.

In case people haven't inferred it, spells are cast by combining runes into a symbolic description of the required effect, with some limitations depending on class, i.e. runefists and rune warriors can only use their powers as part of an attack.

Name suggestions based on the culture of the futhorc (Norse rune alphabet), as described in modern Swedish:

Drakslinga (literally "dragoncoil", traditional ornamentation on rune stones)

Rista (literally "cut/carve", the verb used to describe the making of runes)

Rist (the tool for this; in modern Swedish the meaning has changed to "coulter")

Or you can do the usual thing and rip something out of the associated http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norse_mythology

Err...sorry to burst your japanophobic bubble, but runefists have been a part of this for a while now, and its recieved a lot of positive attention so far. Also, everything else is western, so why not mix it up a little? Also, you could easily fluff a runefist as a western style boxer, or any number of non-eastern martial arts (Capoeira or Savate, for example)

Savate just seems wrong for vikings. Runefist should be a hardedged style consisting of powerful punches, disarming kicks, body slams, tackles, elbow slams, headbutts, knee kicks, backhands...

The entire body is a weapon. Disregarding a single 'blade' is outright foolishness.
    >> Anonymous 09/24/08(Wed)12:45 No.2656045
These sound less like classes by themselves and more like small parts that would be combined to create unique classes. Ironic considering the fact that the game is based on combining runes for different effects.

    >> Anonymous 09/24/08(Wed)13:10 No.2656195

Naturally, you're going to engrave weapons with runes. I see no reason why you can't tatoo/paint them on your hands/feet/whatever and do the same thing.
    >> Earthflame !98PcYIvlCI 09/24/08(Wed)13:13 No.2656213

Rune warriors use that style of thing (i.e. marking equipment) while Runemarked tattoo themselves. Runefists don't actively mark themselves with runes. They move and strike in sympathy with the form and mastery of a rune, drawing it out through bodily dedication, training and skill.
    >> Drawde !F8wHraWURw 09/24/08(Wed)13:14 No.2656216
    No they wont.
Not every martial art has to be "weeaboo"
Boxing has been a British past time for ages, and most of the worlds martial arts aren't even from Asia.
    Krav Maga, for instance.

Though that's not so much a fighting style as it is murder.

I'd like to suggest to you that England should eat babies.

Well, I still think that they should think like that.
Their body in it's entirety is a weapon. They can tattoo any part of it, and therefor they can strike with or defend with any part of it.

I suggest very no-nonsense martial arts. No high jumps etc., no flash, only crude badassery and gruesome tricks, like the superhuman feats of Icelandic sagas. "You just tore my leg off? OK, I'll balance myself on this tree stump. Come on! Fight!"
    >> Earthflame !98PcYIvlCI 09/24/08(Wed)13:57 No.2656465

Runefists don't use Tattoo's. Runemarked may use unarmed combat rune techniques, but they have other options.

Runefists don't memorise runes in the classical sense. they don't need to be told about the mastery or even know the symbol. Instead, they simply repeat a series of stylised movements which, when used in combat, draw out the power of runes.

I'm not going to enforce any form of martial arts. its up to the players to define what they do.

Clarification; Runefists are not the only people who can use martial arts. anyone can learn it. However, they are the only people who are restricted in the use of their abilities only to martial arts techniques.
    >> Earthflame !98PcYIvlCI 09/24/08(Wed)14:38 No.2656747
One thing we need to do is work out is whether we include customised/unique rune trees for certain classes, and how to do them. Some people have suggested mini-trees based off additional source runes (i.e. conflict, joy) or adapting existing rune trees by adding free runes etc to make them more relevant to a classes ability set.

Sorry, i've got no head for grammar, so i get it wrong a lot without noticing.

Also, an agenda for what needs to be done. (In no particular order)

New runes: Free runes, each given its own symbol and name. Anyone's free to come up with them. All free runes fall into one of the already established categories (Lesser, Major, very very rarely Greater) but have no set place within the tree. Anyone can come up with one, just include a translated name and a unique symbol (Don't feel limited to norse).

After the above is done, a new rune chart would be very good. Using the Title "Mosaic", an interesting chart would be a mosaic, with each rune in the traditional tree as an individual tile, with the random other tiles filled in with free runes.

Renaming some classes might be a good idea. any suggestions welcome.

Actually working out the rules might be a good idea too...

    This. For reference, read Beowulf.

Some Runemarked might do that, potentially for a bonus/penalty tradeoff?

Also, I know it's been mentioned way too many times over the past 3 threads, but we still need a better name. "Mosaic" sounds kind of fruity, and anything including the word "rune" would be redundant to the rest of the game.

Another thing: what to do with races?

    Glance at thread #2

Humans as the only PC race (Currently). Other races exist, but not defined. Deep woods populated by Fae, in the style of norse trolls/the fauns from Fauns Labyrinth. Green, woodlike, and unpredictable. Sometimes they'll just play tricks on you, and scare you. other times, you'll be run to the ground, impaled and eaten alive.

    Other race ideas appreciated.

Every game ever has Elves, so why not start there? PC's go crazy go nuts over them. First off, their not "LOL PERFECT IN EVERY WAY" elves either, more along the lines of Valenwood Wood Elves. Eh, Elves and Dwarves in Norse myth were basically the same thing, and they were basically just people.
Elves were people who were good with magicks and knew the secrets of the runes, and Dwarves were people who knew the secrets of making magical items that would kill people, and then taking them back with a "just as planned" smirk.

One other thing i just realised i need to sort out: Why the runes are all nordic.

For those who didn't see the previous thread, a brief summary- The continent is a large oval, with points extending up into each pole, while the equator marks a line of tropics (near to the coast) and deserts (far from it). The continent is populated by a variety of cultures (All ripoffs of ancient earth cultures, because i'm lazy). There's no overarching authority. a roman-esque empire existed a few centuries ago, but offended the dwellers in the woods by attempts to colonise the deepwoods, and was torn apart.

The vikings-likes populate the coasts in the areas nearing the poles. however, they have the longest recorded history in the form of saga's and ballads, which go back thousands of years, and tell of a time of unity and collective knowledge. why this ended is unclear, but it appears to have started with the discovery of a new form of rune. (The unrunes)

Bumping because, although we've got a list of free runes, we need more symbols. They don't have to be norse at this point (While the nords discovered the true-rune chart, other cultures may have discovered the free runes, or other source runes). Even if you make it up yourself, just post it up and we can paste it into a chart.
    >> Anonymous 09/24/08(Wed)18:40 No.2658556
May I suggest something else for the downfall of your roman-esque empire? Or a combination of things?

Just saying that the faedudes from the deepwoods destroyed an entire empire is too lame, Makes them way too powerful as an entity(IE if players ever encounter them they will expect to be wiped clean ... yet somehow survive! Gay.). Mayhaps an alliance between the Fae of the deepwood and the monsters and other mythical creatures displaced by the (rapid)expansion of that empire, the clear cutting of forests and taking of plains for farming and cities and such.

Really, haveing some kind of allpowerful superbeing(s) living next door in the woods is too easy.
    >> Earthflame !98PcYIvlCI 09/24/08(Wed)18:52 No.2658641

A very good suggestion. But that'd require some more fleshed out additional races...

    My ideas;

Merfolk, who live in the rivers. Secretive but benign, they don't generally bother people, and use illusions to keep themselves hidden. They attacked the roman-a-likes because pollution and increased river traffic were destroying their settlements and killing their people.

Centaurs of the plains and deserts, swiftest beasts on land. some of the greatest hunters ever known, their mastery of the javelin and bow legendary, but also legends persist of their beautiful music and skill with words, rarely heard by human ears. They are relatively well-known to exist, but only from glimpses on the horizon, but their general response at seeing any humans is to run away as fast as possible, little detail about their culture is known. They attacked the romans-esque people after the overpopulated the plains and desert, making their solitude harder and harder to maintain.

    More to come.

Pic related. See, this is why people go into sagebot mode at the sight of you.

    >One other thing i just realised i need to sort out: Why the runes are all nordic.

In the world's ancient times (before the "Romans" existed, there was a civilization (early "Vikings") that rose to great power by discovering that a few simple symbols and words could have wondrous effects; they discovered/invented runic magic.
Unfortunately, one day the civilization's greatest wizard was researching new runes and discovered the Un-Runes. His mind was unable to contain the power they unleashed, so he went insane and began destroying his fellow wizard's works... and then the wizards themselves.
The mad mage's rampage killed hundreds, including the entire ruling family. The secrets of the runes would have been lost forever had the former scholar not suddenly disappeared without a trace. Those who survived realized what must have happened, and vowed to never again explore knowledge that man was clearly not meant to know. All research immediately stopped, but most still used the runic spells that remained after the mage's frenzied attacks.

In recent years, cults have begun to appear, channeling strange powers that could not be duplicated by any rune combination. Despite the cults' far-flung origins, their seemingly interconnected goals and worship of an eerily similar deity indicate that they may all be led in secret by a single being...

If I may, I'd like to suggest that you throw in the seal-style Chinese characters, for flavor, if nothing else. I think their forms would work well with the Norse runes, having that same sort of unpolished and unfinished, yet simplified, look.

That's a cool little web app that will take a modern Chinese character and give you all the old, archaic forms, including the seal script and even some oracle bone examples, if those catch your fancy more than the seal characters.

Honestly, Mao's Cultural Revolution was nothing compared to some of the dynastic shit that occurred.

Anyway, as an example, here is the seal form, on the left, and the oracle form, on the right, for the character 火, meaning fire. (Or various other things depending on context but that's not really important.)

    >> Anonymous 09/25/08(Thu)07:46 No.2662969

Its not a class based system, as such. After you select which type of rune-user you are, how you structure your abilities is up to you. a starting rune warrior could be entirely focused on range, or go for a mix, or even some unarmed/martial arts techniques using equipment like metal gauntlets, punch-knives and knuckle dusters.

Except now the details are removing all of the fun. The fun of the concept was it was a mysterious world where everyone had a little access to this mysterious power and it was up to the player to decide how he used it.

Now it's quickly turning into a class-based system with tiered progression just like every other class based RPG has been moving toward.

So your details have turned the game from a cool indie RPG into another generic RPG with a pseudo Norse theme despite being only marginally Nordic at best.
    >> Anonymous 09/25/08(Thu)21:30 No.2666206

So it'd be a high fantasy game set in a make believe world inspired by the mythologies of ancient Europe and the Far East.

... So it'd be Exalted. Only with runes. Instead of Unisystem with awesome freeform runic powers, like Earthflame originally invisioned it.

I honestly don't see how the game benefits from the change.

Okay, I'm going to come clean. I've only ever played D&D 3.x, CoC, WoD and DH (briefly). I have no idea how this system will turn out, but I've seen no mention of levels, which to me, is a defning aspect of a class based system.
The most numbers oriented thing I can think of right now would be mana, or any other method of using runes. The more mana you pump into a spell, the more powerful/specific it can get. Different uses, different mana growth. But anyway, stop bitching and contribute.
    >> Anonymous 09/25/08(Thu)21:42 No.2666281

Ahh, what a lovely sleep. Lets see whats gone on overnight...

I will admit, i'm not good at mechanics. I'm bad at thinking them up, writing them out or balancing them. However, i don't just "shoehorn(s) in the Storyteller system at the end" Eurid uses a variant of the storyteller system, pretty much straight, but that was explicit from the beginning, while ArtifIce uses an admittedly similar D10 mechanic, but has changed massively in the details. It'll be clearer when i finish it.

It is not my intention, and has never been my intention, to use Storyteller for this game.

This post is correct. These games aren't mine. They're /tg/'s. I'm just heading the design team. If i make a mistake, and /tg/ tells me i did, then i will go back and change the game, because there's no point in making a game people won't enjoy, or play and have fun with.

In case you do spot an obvious fault in a game i've done, email me about it, and i'll see what i can do.

Question: Why the seperate rune tree for Warriors? Seems odd that warriors would limit themselves to a particular set of runes - or that nobody else would think to use the Warrior runes.
    >> Anonymous 09/26/08(Fri)05:27 No.2669234

The extra runes charts are additional, so warriors can use most of the True-sourced runes (However, not faith or knowledge trees). maybe the idea'll be scrapped, maybe it'll spread to every class, but its keeping options open.
    >> Anonymous 09/26/08(Fri)07:48 No.2669654

Maybe not all of them would be useful, but a small bit of details could help you learn weaknesses of your foes, or scrying will tell you his tactcis, or, exactly what he'll do in 6 seconds.
Faith - Holy champion, anyone? Smiting is pretty fucking obvious. Blessing, also pretty fucking obvious. Destiny, not so much, but Courage? Is this not what a warrior's life is built around?

Well, we can just have the lesser runes trees apply to non-human races (Who, for the most part, aren't designed to be PC's, or at least not work in a mixed group).

Perhaps Freedom as the source rune for the Centaurs?

Hey, just popping in to say a few things.

If your interested in working on this project, to get it properly done, sling me an email or drop into #Mosaic at irc.thisisnotatrueending.com (Port 6667)

Second, we need a couple of executive decisions before we properly move one.

    1) Additional rune trees- For classes, for races, or scrap the entire idea?

    2) Game tone- when were developing the mechanics, it'll affect the tone of the game. Do we want grimdark realism, or high fantasy epic? high fatality, or plot armour? any thoughts on this'd be good.

Finally, if anyone has opinions of any of the classes, feel free to share them. fluff them out a bit, criticise or modify them, or outright say one shouldn't exist. Projects like this only improve though public editing, and the rune-user types are a core of the system, and thus need to be thoroughly vetted.
    >> Anonymous 09/26/08(Fri)14:28 No.2671208

This one is a bit odd... for one thing, most of the runes seem to mean very similar things to others, with little defining the differences between them. Anyone want to clarify this?

    >1) Additional rune trees- For classes, for races, or scrap the entire idea?
Totally scrap. Runes just need to be rare and hidden, so that majority of them would be unknown for the majority of people (hidden by some monastic orders - just like new scientific papers these days - or just forgotten and dangerous). When a character tries to learn a new rune, he makes a roll(s) on stat and failure means he gets some kind of damage/affliction. The more runes he already knows, the harder it is for him to learn more (maybe antagonistic runes even harder - e.g. trying to learn fire when he already knows water). And in this case afflictions should be more dangerous too.
Pros? No level ups, no classes, free character development. Each way of using a rune (warrior, fist, priest, etc.) - different skill, not a class.
Cons? Still needs some endurance or mana stat to power runes up. E.g. fire for 1 mana - static candlelike, fire 5 - static campfire or thrown/long-lasting candlefire.

    Sorry for lousy english.
    >> Anonymous 09/26/08(Fri)17:47 No.2672621

That's partially in keeping with what's already been written, but it'd take things in a new and somewhat darker direction. The initial idea was a world where low level magic (i.e. lesser runes) was universal, everyone knowing and using one or two as part of normal life. It was only when you reached the point of knowing many runes (5+) or the higher power runes (major and above) that magic became a more esoteric, mysterious thing.

And even with your idea, that doesn't necessarily remove the possibility of the additional rune charts. The other races are all secretive and little known, and would perhaps guard their own runes with a fierce determination, while the class-specialist rune trees might be secret things, only taught to those who befriend ancient order of that type of rune user.
    >> Anonymous 09/26/08(Fri)18:30 No.2672972
But that doesn't mean that you'll need to make specific charts. Because it's simpler to give different runes different rarities then make some predesigned societies with their own lists of known runes. If some runes were continiously lost and rediscovered and each and everyone tries to hold his own share of power in secret, then there's no grant, that each society of similar knowledge would have access to similar rune charts.
However, if there're some completely different rune systems (like voodoo runes, thief glyphs, morrowind runes, hieroglyphs and nordic runes) than I think different charts are absolutely accceptable.
But rigid rune ladders are absolutery no-no, except for some logical ones (inquisitorial zeal available only after learning fire and faith or something). Or greater runes as they were explained earlier.

And personally, I'm against magic that's used by each drunk bum in da pub. Because this way it's no more magical then some esoterical stuff for housewifes or simple training like meditation techniques. Or even worse - everyday tool.

Damn. The sleeper I am the worse my english goes. So I'm off for 8-10 hours. Hope this thread won't sage itself till that time.

The current main chart was meant as universal runes, not particularly tied to any particular race or location. maybe certain nations would specialise in certain runes, but there was nowhere a rune would be completely absent. Then again, scarcity may be an option...

I'm not sure what you mean by the next bit... The idea with additional charts is they express concepts which, rather than directly derive from the ultimate truth of reality, derive from other, lesser concepts, which still hold enough weight to have a web of runes around them.

Eh, we decided to go for commonplace magic. if you run the game, change the setting, if you'll have more fun with it.

Also, idea; To make up for humans only accessing the main rune chart (Assuming were abandoning additional rune charts for classes), the other races have fewer ways to use runes (2-3 per race, one unique, the others the same as human?(

So, Israel isn't in Asia anymore you say?

How about you just get the fuck off the internet and stop fagging it up for everyone?

samefag that made the Earthsea reference in a previous thread.

I still like the idea that most everyone in an area has learned one rune that corresponds to their area. Like a coastal village learning the sub-minor rune that helps them bring cod from the depths to be caught easier, and the entire village guards this tiny rune jealously. They wouldn't even really need to be fleshed out...maybe just given a name....or maybe its a minor rune that the villagers don't realize the full potential of...

example: a small village in a stormy area knowing that if they carve Elding (lightning) into poles and put them away from their homes, the lightning will strike the pole and not the house. They have it, they just don't know the power that they have.

It would turn the entire party into scholars though, making them study each and every rune they come across in great detail.

Stop trying to rub your stupid onto Norse mythology. No one wants you there.

Alright, I've already read a couple of these threads and I'm feeling kind of lazy about reading this one so here's what I think:

This is looking good thus far. The classes are good, no need for more unless a REALLY good gets suggested.

My main qualm is this: The runes, you have many that are expected (life, death, and all that jazz) but I notice that a few might be missing for the full range of effects. Where is time? What about space (for teleportation)? Obviously many effects can be made using what you have, but some are redundant whilst you leave holes in the overall picture.

I remember reading something about another rune chart for different classes or something...? Don't do this. If you want the world set up to be nice you will have one central rune (truth) which is surrounded by the rest, any side charts that are unconnected would ruin the setup.

Question: Will there be different races, and which races? Please dont go generic elf dorf etc

I'm not sure at this stage in the project all these new directions etc are a good idea. they'll just have us infinitely backtracking, refining details before we've got the general stuff nailed down. lets just keep the fluff as it is, in general, so far, and see about rules ideas or somesuch.

I'm thinking that for now, we just leave the existing rune tree as is, and should more runes be needed, GMs can just stick them floating somewhere, or if they want make up a minor tree.

    Idea for a plot hook:

One of the oldest Nordic barbarians, who has failed to die in battle, is wandering in search of a worthy death. He is a master Runewarrior, wielding the runes as freely as he wields his blade, and he wields his battleaxe better than any. He's in the area, and has heard of you and your friends power, and seeks you out, to determine whether you may give him a worthy death.

Will you try and reason him, showing your group as too weak to deal with, or attempt to slay him and claim his powerfully-runed armour and weapons?

    I'm off /tg/, have a good night.

I'm going back to University soon, so i'll be pretty busy getting back into the swing of it for the next few weeks, and i'll probably not get much time to make threads or work on any games. If you have ideas or whatever, email them to me or post them up on the 1d4chan page, or just make another thread yourself. the channel on the sup/tg/ IRC (#Mosaic) is also there, if you need a place to chat about it, and if you feel like making a wiki for the game, be my guest.

See ya in a couple of weeks.
