My little sister has asked me to make an army for her to play in Warhammer Fantasy and another for Warhammer 40k. And like the brother that I am, I don't really want to deny her the ability to play any games with me and my gaming group. However, I don't know what army I should build for her.

What army would /tg/ suggest I make for a little girl to play in both of the games I mentioned?

Necrons and Vampire Counts seem to be the easiest factions to play for their respective games.

I'd recommend converting or finding an appropriate miniature to make the army commanders look female (or at least formerly female).

If you want people to stay involved with something, you have to make sure they're personally & emotionally invested from the beginning; if -you- choose, it won't be -her- army. Just how her pictures of art & models from various different armies, tell her their stories, and see what she's most enthusiastic about.

You can help her with army list effectiveness, but choosing a "good" army isn't as important as an army that she'll stay excited about. You don't have to win to have a satisfying gaming experience.

Also, are you sure she'll have the energy and time to spend on two armies? If her attention is split too much she'll probably end up making a piecemeal effort in each, not finishing either to her satisfaction and becoming discouraged.

I'm 28 and she's 8. She loves horror and sci-fi, but hates demons (I think they scare her, but she won't admit to it. She really won't admit to being scared of anything short of being seen showing fright of them (and even then its iffy)). She also loves playing boardgames. She loves pretty much all things medievalish in design. The books she reads (and she reads a LOT of them) are things like LoTR, Dragonriders, Eragon, Hitchhiker's guide, Witch World, Mythigo Woods, and Ender's game. Her favorite movies and TV shows are things like the old horror movies (particularly from the 30s), Dr. Who, Lord of the Rings, Hellboy, and V for Vendetta.

    >>2642472
She wanted me to pick the army for her. I already asked what she wanted me to make for her, and she had troubles choosing one. Its a safe assumption that pretty much all armies for both games are sitting around here (including the discontinued ones).

    >>2642503
I did that, she really was rather indecisive. Was excited about pretty much everything but the chaos marines (her remark about them is that knights should fight for the good guys, or something similar) and the chaos daemons (she hates demons for some reason, I suspect a fear of them).

Also, one does not rape those they love. Thats a bad thing.

If she likes spooky Halloween style stuff, you could likely sell her on Vampire Counts. Necrons are too boring to play to suggest them, but Witch Hunters are too expensive for a hobby she might not stick with. Try out Warhammer Fantasy first.

You could kitbash a witch sitting on a broom as a vampire count HQ choice. I've seen it done before and it's cute.

As for FB, I'd recommend Bretonnians. Yeah, they're perhaps the most generic army in that game, but seriously: Arthurian Lady In The Lake, Damsels riding alongside knights in shining armor. Seems like a solid choice. but ultimately, SHE should get to choose her army.

40k: the obvious gender-appropriate answer is Sisters, but I don't know that they're necessarily noob-friendly. Also, they're VERY expensive to collect being that the entire army is metal.

For 40k, I'd go with generic Marines, Guard, Orks, or perhaps Necrons. All are pretty easy to play and you can get plastic models for all of them. Also, for the first two, it's quite possible to expand into other armies (Sisters and Knights) from them.

There are so many unfinished witch hunters here its not funny anymore (unless you are the one mocking me for room full of unbuilt units (both the older of my sisters and mom do this, and my youngest sister does occationally)). I intend to build the army mostly from my backlog (which is about 2000-3000 points of most armies right now, and god only knows why I keep buying them).

    >>2642819
I would do nothing about it. Or for any of the other similar stories. She doesn't like stories involving romance anyways, or at least she says she doesn't. The only comics I've seen her really take much interest in were my stockpile of Hellboy.

    >>2642823
I tried that for a while. I've only had one girlfriend that was able to click with my sister. She was a gamer and eventually left me because she felt unworthy or something similar to that (I was never able to grasp entirely what she was going on about). She still occasionally comes to the gaming group or will stop by to play with my sister. My sister does play with the girls my gaming group, what few we have. However, in general she doesn't get along well with females.

First off OP, props for raising your little sister. That's some manly fucking shit, to take the responsibility like you do. I have the utmost respect for anyone who does.

Now, as for armies? Given her reading choices, it's pretty easy to see that she'd do best with Brettonians and Grey Knights, respectively. The latter is harder to play with, and quite frankly doesn't win many games, so perhaps she'd be more comfortable playing as SM's but using GK's for count-as purposes.

Orks might be a good secondary choice, as they're versatile, flexible, and offer loads of conversion fun. Besides, they're in it for the kicks, which is something I think a kid can get behind.

Do you think she'd like the Tomb Kings? They're sort of on the tragic side, and have actual emotions and memories (I TOO ONCE LOVED), but are suitably awesome. Besides, they're easy to paint, which may be a bonus for a first army.

We salute you for raising your sister. We've mentioned our beliefs on parenting and wargaming before, and this makes us happy. From what you've said, she accompanies you when you game, this can be an excellent opportunity to show off the different choices. Above, all, make sure the focus is on her. Don't try to push her into the army you want her to use, and make sure she doesn't think you're doing that. Little kids base a lot of their decisions on how adults and role-models act and react.

    Good work, OP.

Speaking as someone in a not entirely dissimilar situation, I've found that my girl, when I've let her play my copy of Dawn of War (haven't played tabletop in years), liked the Imperial Guard the best. I couldn't get her to admit why this was, but she does seem to highly enjoy employing artillery barrages, backed up by a mix of heavy weapons squads and masses of guardsmen.

With me sitting nearby to act as 'Military Advisor' if she's having any trouble.

Damn fitting. Everybody likes awesome Toph. How is the little lass now? Just a short overview or something.

And all of you thinking that the OP's lying, let me say that my own little sister likes my Warham models, and the fluff (though I left out some of the more PG-13 specifics). I think that she (OP's sister) just likes the look of the models, and the fact that big bro's painting and assembling them; it's all a big arts and crafts project.

Hence, OP, try to get a catalogue, a brochure or something- hell, d/l the Codices off /rs/ and show her the pics of the models, see what she likes, get a few and turn it into a family occasion. Be prepared to offer encouragement and words of comfort when she finds out Golden Daemons take work.

OP, what codices did she read? Just some you had lying around, or did you pick them out specifically for her? She might not know the wide range of options she's got, and you don't wanna fork out $$$ for 9001 Spehss Marehns only to have her look at a High Elf Codex and decide she wants some White Lion chariots or something. Like I said, you might want to d/l the Codices, or go to GW's homepage and peruse/cut-and-paste pics on to a file then print them before asking her what she wants to paint.

And don't prress the issue. Intelligent she may be, in my experience young kids can be pretty flighty. She might want to paint warhams today, and tomorrow be all big on W.I.T.C.H. or something; as a big brother, just roll with it and don't be disappointed if she doesn't want to play army men like you do.

Closure... sweet closure... Time... To die.

By the way op, I suggest Undead (either one) for Warhammer, they are the easiest to paint and have the best fluff. All she needs to learn for skellies is either drybrushing or how to use washes.
As for 40k, I wouldn't recommend IG, they rule, but painting dozens of guys will bore her to bits eventually. I'd go for Grey Knights or maybe one of the other SM factions, Blood Angels (tortured but noble) would seem to suit her taste, and aren't that hard to paint..

    >> Anonymous 09/22/08(Mon)22:07 No.2644323
I would recommend the space marine army. With this, you may easily mix and match a majority of the 40k race.

SM can have allience with the forces of order (tau, eldar, GK, SOB, IG) Since she is into knights and stuff, the races above have characters that can be related with knightly attributes.

SM can be her base force for the time being with the normal HQ and 2 troop slots and expanding them by mixing tau fire warriors as troops and eldar harlequins for Elites. Saraphim from SOB and GK teleport attack for Fast attack, IG armored company troops in the troop slot and so and so. But than, the Leadership profiles for the races will be affected.

This is a great way to find out what she likes. If she likes all of them, than this can be a very unique army with all of the forces of order combine and it is within all the rules stated.

As said, including allies into a SM army from any allied race is this

    2 Troops
    1 Fast Attack
    1 Elites
    1 HQ

But it depends on the current codex of the races above, but stick the above. You can have troop choices from any of the race IG, Eldar, GK , SOB, Tau. Same with other slots, but no Heavy support is allowed.

If you take orks, you only can have kroot from tau and some units from dark eldar and chaos. Those are the only ork allies and it depends on what is allowed for them.

From the vibe I'm getting, she doesn't actually want to play 4 SRS, just pewpewpew with big brother, in which case I suggest that OP buy either Tau or Spehs Marehns as the big flat surfaces would be very friendly to new painters/modelers. And remember, OP, MAKE SURE THIS IS WHAT SHE ACTUALLY WANTS TO DO, and that she's not just spouting out sstuff like most younger kids. Don't project your hobbies and desires onto your sister.

For the fantasy, give her the brits. She likes knights, give her that, or skaven. Both can be allied with other races easily and she can expand from there.

40K might be a bit of a problem as she needs to read many codexes to know the basics, but get the online version and print the army list for her. As said, the Tau, IG, GK, SOB, Eldar, and SM.

She will have fun with this army. SM goes shooty, SOB becomes meat shield, GK deep strike, Tau crisis suits jumping here and there, IG troops in chimera and Kaserkins getting in close diverting enemy shots while harlequins dances here and there whipping the enemy up with their Initiatives

Do you reliase 40 SOB troops only cost less than 500 points with 2 meltaguns, and 2 storm bolters and with krak grenades. That is a serious meat shield with with enough bolter fire and numbers to make your opponent hesitate to assualt and attack tanks if your sister wants. Each squad consist of 1 special weapon and 1 other weapon. Each model cost 11 points and they come in plastic.

Mix and match the good guys, this she can decide. But if you are making an army for her, and you have many unused models, this can lower your spending cost. Get her a normal SM HQ and 2 troops, than start mixing from there.

    Good luck.

I'm not sure how serious she is about it, but she does like to play tabletop games. And she does like the Warhammer fluff. I'm not sure how much she will actually play it though.

    >>2644350
She's in bed now so I'll ask her tomorrow. Her current favorites are Empire, Bretonnia, Vampire Counts, and orcs for Fantasy. Her favorites so far for 40k are Space Marines, Sisters of Battle, Orks, and Squats.

If that is the case, then yes, I suggest Bret knights (sod me for not thinking of them earlier). Maybe even a pegasus knight or two, those models are awesome. As for 40K, I suggest mixing-and matching Bret parts (knights are plastic, right?) with SM parts for that real 'Knight in Space' look. Orks can be an interesting family project; forget Monopoly, start bashing together a trakk with your family today! Like you said, she sounds like she's more into painting and modeling than actually playing, so sod stats and get her some pretty models!

Yanno, if it weren't for you saying that you had a large collection of old stuff, I'd start thinking you were a clever troll or something. As it is, remind her that GW has

Get empire for fantasy and SM for 40k.

Both can be easy on someone her age as well as painting and modeling and both can help you save cash if you have them at hand.

I am sure you have extra marine bits, try looking through them and you may find out you can built extra marines from there. You also said you have extra witch hunters, so ally them with the marines.

For Empire, you can have an allience with the brits.

40K, don't use squats. they are outdated, but wait until the updated version comes out. If you have them at hand but don't play, same thing. Mix them. Codex say they can ally with SM, so it helps a lot here.

Let her play and get a feel of it first of some portions of these army and let her decide on how to continue. You can clobber her an allied army, but how it expands, will depend on her. This way, you will not risk spending much.

then give her Squats they're done easily whit dwarf bodies and space marine and ork guns whit the gliphs and symbols filed of -adding candeljack here so they kidnap each other- vehicles will have to be scratch built which is always a hassle unless you're an ork player. paintjobs need to be bold bright and "XTREEM" whit neon runes and the like, give a slayer a purple and pink mohawk. dunno where are you gonna get those much goggles, though.

There is WH40k stuff in my house going back maybe 15-20 years having the models (or bits to make models if need be) will never be an issue here. My bits box is actually a closet full of boxes.

Emp and Brits are what I'm thinking she's going to want to do most, based on what she likes. However, I will have to ask her after she wakes up what she wants. I also plan to let her decide what goes in her army, that way its built the way she wants it. I will likely start her out at about 1000 points or so, and let her build it as she sees fit to expand.

    >>2644417
I still have boxes of Squats around here somewhere. No need to fashion new ones. I'd like to make space skaven, but I've got no idea really where to start on that.

    >>2644404
She already helps when I'm messing around with building large numbers of units. She has the coordination to build well enough, but I do the painting.

No I mean the Squats codex. I have it but it a large high res scan costing 450++ MB. The codex outlines you can ally with forces of the Imperium and Adeptus Mechanicus armies. But they still follow on how the GK and SOB allow SM to use their forces. 2 Troops, 1 fast attack, 1 HQ, 1 elite but no heavy support.

as far as I know the 5th edition SM codex doesn't state that they can ally with anyone other than other chapters of SM.

As long as they are forces of order, you can ally them. Why else do they release the Leadership modification chart at their website. Go browse the GW website, download it and read it. The chart outlines on who can ally with who, but squats are too outdated, but wait for the updated version, but other wise, refer to their codex and use the rules there.

THE rules say this, REFER TO THE PARENT CODEX OF THE RACES CONCERN FOR MORE INFORMATION.

Did you guys even read them page by page. These many shit in there they went through and this includes allies and where to get more info from.

Are you sure ou want to start off that big? I remember when I first started; the first 500 points were the hardest (and I refuse to believe that a little girl has more willpower than I do). Of course, if you're planning to carry on with the 1000 points as you do with your normal armies (I.e. assist her/with her assistance) feel free to disregard me.

    >I'd like to make space skaven, but I've got no idea really where to start on that.

IIRC, there were pics posted on /tg/ with Skaven modeled with Tau parts; counted as Gue'la auxuliaries or something.

That's the age I was when I read Hitchhiker's. I think it was the fifth proper book I read, after reading Hobbit and Lord of the Rings.

Didn't really stop me from being a naive little kid though. All the really morally ambiguous, adult situations just go over your head at that age, even if you are smart enough to read the book.

Of course. Neither does the Imperial Guard codex. Typically, except for Daemonhunter/Witch Hunters, it never will. But what you CAN look for is the parent codex of your allies, where it should say what units can be included. DH and WH aren't mentioned in Space Marines--they're just allowed under their own codexes. And GW clearly agrees with this principle, being that you can take both allies along if you play them at 'Ard Boyz finals in Baltimore (where they'll be using the 5th ed codex).

That being said, for all of you who don't know who Nurse-kun is, do a Google search; the first link's a pretty complete account. read it, and cheer with us as we learn that Nurse-kun and the lady he's taking care of are happy and well, and that he's still getting his ass kicked in Ouendan/origami/everything.
