"Hmph. I would not worry over such trifling matters, Emperor.", the High Priest of Asmodeus assured his leige. "This new faith the slave caste whispers of is no more than a silly peasant cult. Foolish people, little more than animals, praying to an idiot godling hardly worthy of the name."

Emperor Thantolas leaned back in his throne, obviously not assured. "You would do well to have your priests take this matter more seriously. I want this disease stamped out before it takes root in our empire's workforce. Should it spread beyond the slave caste, it..."

He went silent as the sounds of countless voices shouting echoed through the windows. The emperor and high priest both hurried to see the source of the disturbance, and both their hearts dropped when they saw the stars in the night sky reflected by what seemed to be just as many torches in the streets. Among the crowd, the activity seemed to center around individuals bearing strange spectacles that shined in the torchlight like the eyes of vengeful demons. One of them, a half-orc raised a thin curving sword as the chaotic screaming and shouting synchronized into a singular mantra:

The high priest was trembling as he prayed in a feverish panic to his dark lord. How could this have happened so quickly? What happened to the meticulous organization of will-breaking practices and social structures that kept the populace in line? What hope did they have of reasserting power and their will over this wild mass of people?

It wouldn't be hard at all for a DM to adjust the alignment restrictions, replacing Law/Chaos oriented abilities and spells with their opposite numbers.

It's just that it's been the standard for so long that it's pretty much a case of "it's always been that way". I can see the arguments to keep it LG only, but there's also something nice about having a similar class option for CG characters.

There was barely enough light not to trip and fall like an idiot in one of the countless broken tiles that made up the floor of the tomb. Karendi, the half-elven sorceror buy that's been tagging along with us since the bar brawl in Waterdeep, had just said that the light spell had a 20 feet radius, but it sure didn't look like that.

"What kind of nutcase king builds a tomb out of this dark creepy stone?" Wondered aloud Elea, poking the wall with her knife (which was more like a shortsword in her little halfling hands) in frustration. Roughly cut and irregular, whatever little light we had flickered on its surface and I can swear that the shadows looked alive. I almost expected the wall to roar in pain and anger when she stabbed it.

    Instead, something worse happened.

When the echoing sound of steel on stone had vanished, a faint clicking noise greeted us from further down the corridor.

"Here he is." Grinned our cleric, the batshit insane tattoed elf chick who had dragged us there on that wild goose hunt in the first place, hundred of miles from the Sword Coast. I didn't even know what her god was supposed to be at the time. It was one I had never heard about, and just assumed was some kind of lesser deity from the elven pantheon.
    >> Local Exaltedfag 09/13/08(Sat)07:20 No.2566013
And, sure as the nine hells, from the shadow walked out a feebly clanking, quivering, shaking armor, steel and tarnished bronze and stained copper with gold trim choked by centuries of cobwebs and dust. He wore no helm, but a gide golden crown studded with many green gemstones.
His sword gleamed maliciously as he brought the blade up against us, but that was nothing compared to the light that shone inside its empty eye sockets.
The skeletal figure hissed something. Maybe a threat, or a last warning, or maybe I just imagined it.

"...High King Askrial." Karendi whispered, pale as a blanket. I eyed him: He didn't look in good shape. I'm no magic expert, but I know that even sorcerors have limits, and he must have nearly reached them after all the zombies, skeletons and gargoyles that guarded the previous two floors of the tomb.
Elea looked even more distressed: we were in a corridor, so her mobility was seriously compromised, and anyway her knife, however magic, wasn't going to do much against an armored skeleton that didn't even have vitals to stab. And she was looking behind herself, at the escape route, more than she was ogling the jewel-studded crown. Bad sign.

I sighed heavily, sword drawn, and stepped forward, not too keen on taking on a warrior skeleton alone, but still pretty confident in my swordsmanship.
    If only I knew.
    >> Local Exaltedfag 09/13/08(Sat)07:21 No.2566019
The skeletal king didn't step forward to attack me like I expected. Instead, he stepped backwards, talking me completely by surprise, and opened his mouth wide, gaping horrendously, vomiting some kind of black ghostly stuff.

Shadows. Shadows that took shape, standing upright, staring at us with intense hatred. Three between him and us, other three filtered through the wall and reappeared behind us.

"...Wraiths-" Karendi made just in time to warn us, before a pair of shadow talons thrust out of the darkness and touched him. Streak of white appeared in his black hair as he stumbled and fell, gurgling in agony.

Then I think Elea must have spun and tried to stab one of the wraiths in whatever passed for its neck with her knife, trying desperately to carve an escape route, while the other three shadows in front of me lunged, spectral eyes shining dark red. I raised my sword and-

And to my surprise that crazy elven cleric darted past me, throwing herself straight into the mob of Wraiths.

"Sorry to disturb your rest, old pal!" He laughed, sprinting past the three wraiths, which now looked positively confused, and standing in front of the ancient, armor-clad undead king, without even drawing her sword. "But we've got a revolution to start in Thay, and for that we need all the gold you raped from the peasants during your reign!"

I was flabbergasted. It takes a special kind of idiot to even think of such a plan. No wonder she hadn't told what she wanted to do with her part of the loot. "...A REVOLUTION?! Who... just who the hell do you think you are?!"

"EXACTLY!" She screamed in answer, pulling a ridiculously-shaped pair of orange classes and putting them on the bridge of her nose. I don't know how the hell sis he manage to make them stay up.

I was dimly aware of Elenna stabbing a Wraith and screming for help behind me, as the other wraiths closed in. The king raised his sword, ready to thrust at the cleric.

    >> Local Exaltedfag 09/13/08(Sat)07:22 No.2566029
The skeletal king stabbed. She drew her curved blade in a flash, parried, shoved both blades aside, closed in and, in an eyebeat, slammed her fist in High King Askrial's face, the sound of crunched bone echoing throughout the hollow corridor as his skull caved in.

Then, I remember briefly seeing a gleam of green light on her spiky glasses and catching a glimpse of the image of... a flaming skull wearing that same glasses, which I would later learn that was the symbol of her god.

Then, green shining light washed over the corridor, and the shadows were no more.

They selflessly bent their entire race to their purpose, which was to prevent the ultimate destruction of the universe due to use of spiral energy.
However, the only way to prevent the use of spiral energy is either genocide, or keeping the entire population in a constant state of fear, despair, and hopelessness.

I took a swig from the cask I always keep on my side for situations like these. Some people liken to ale as a drug, and indeed it is, a drug to deaden the shock from extreme emotions. From likely defeats to unbelievable victories. This case, it was the latter taken to the impossible.

No one could remember a time before life under the demon lords. Some say they had been building up to an invasion of our world for some time; others thought some mad wizard summoned something beyond his control. Whatever the cause, they swarmed in from some other plane, however the universe works, and destroyed empires and kingdoms thousands of years old in a matter of weeks.

I grew up on the edge of one the fortress cities that had sprung up after the rift. You know, the ones with full of those mysterious buildings full of gears that hundreds of us mortals toil and die in to produce those giant, piloted golems those filthy demons favor in battle. I, like many, grew up on the polluted streets and was plucked off as soon as I wasn't quick enough to hide from one of the overseer patrols. Like the generations before me, I was most likely doomed to a death beneath the giant machinery.

That was when the new faith was beginning to make a slow, steady growth amongst us, the slaves. The stories began to make their ways around, first about Kamina, who on another world fought even greater odds and won, and then the deeds of his clerics. How they would stand up even against chain devils and sometimes come up on top. How in other factory cities whole populations rebelled and drove out the oppressors, at least for a little while. And how horrible the punishments were when the demons, eventually, reconquered what they had lost.

Mass migrations between the fortress cities were common and unregulated. Where could we go in the blasted wastelands where we'd escape the watchful eyes of patrols aided by magic and diabolic flocks of birds? So I guess he must have come in on one of those, but that still doesn't explain how he smuggled in his weapon and religious symbols.

I saw him in the fourth ward down by the elder barracks on my way back from a shift. As usual, one of the lower demons or devils or whatever they are were torturing the weak, a way to weed out the already dead. There was a commotion over there and a shout of, "Who the hell do you think I am?!" before a cut of a long blade sent a horned head flying into the air.
    >> Anonymous 09/14/08(Sun)01:36 No.2572192
One of the other workers in my shift, Conrad, I think, ran up horrified to the shirtless stranger.

"What in the nine hells do you think you're doing?!? We've got to turn you in or else the. . "

He didn't finish his sentence. The stranger had clocked him in the jaw with the hilt of his weapon before using his other hand to bring Conrad's eyes level with the distinctive orange spectacles that were tinged with the soot of the city. And even though the stranger's eyes were drilling into the depths of Conrad's soul, he held the entire gathering crowd transfixed.

"For years you have lived in fear, in slavery! And why? Not because of a demonic invasion. But because you refuse to ignore the impossible! You refuse to believe in yourselves and bare your souls and fight!"

At this point he dropped Conrad in the demon-blood tainted dust and addressed the crowd.

"But I know, just as Lord Kamina knows, that your souls are strong and that you will win this battle and pierce through the heart of this infernal invasion! I am not asking you to believe in yourselves! I am asking you to believe in Lord Kamina who believes in yourself!"

Kittan would be a martyr and saint of the Church of Kamina. Lesser saints would include those of the Dai-Gurren Brigade who died fighting the Anti-Spiral fleet.

Yoko would be a high priestess, and Simon an epic-level paladin, bordering on demigod. Viral would just be a high-level paladin, I'd imagine.

    >> Anonymous 09/15/08(Mon)06:50 No.2581407

Collective determination to stop Spiral progress manifests, as it did in the show, into a single entity--the Anti-Spiral deity. Major deity who was destroyed by the then-Lesser deity Kamina along with the actions of the Dai-Gurren Brigade. Kamina then becomes the reigning deity of the pantheon.

    Also, Lord Genome demigod.
