    79 KB Weapon Myths . 09/12/08(Fri)19:15 No.2561785
Just a little thought I had about weapons.

In general what is the generic "cool" with various existing weapon types (not stuff like jedi lightsabres)?

    e.g.
Revolver (six-shooter): Cowboys/Gunslingers (high noon duelling)
    Pistol: Agents / Men-in-suits, sleek/concealed/business.
    Rifle: Sniper/assassin. Sneaky.
    Assault Rifle: Soldier (Army/militia/combat organisation)
    Throwing daggers: Assassins/not-so-weaboo ninjas
    Daggers (normal): Thief/Assassin/sneaky type.
    Axe: Vikings, brutal.
    Hammer/Mace/Blunt melee: Workmen-turned-warrior. Smash/pulp into nothing.
Katana: Weaboo Samuri (or generic weaboo warrior)

Any style or character-type you associate with a specific weapon type?

One handed single edged swords - Duelists, a sport fighter, either in honor duels or in the pits. Deflects and parries blows, rather than block it with armor

One handed double edged swords - Sword and Board crusades type. Fights as part of a regiment, the army-man.

Two handed, single edges swords (aka, the Katana) - quick, agile fighter, all-or-nothing blows. weeaboo feel.

Two handed, double edged swords (aka, Claymore) - brutal and kind of sluggish. Sort of a wildman/Celt feel.

Single sided axe - woodsman, his weapon is a tool as well. Rugged. Fewer strokes are better

Double sided axe - stocky fighter who swing in a flurry of blood. Cleaves through the competition, literally.

Club/Mace - BONK. Not a militant character, likely a priest or mage that knows how to swing.

Sledge/Warhammer - Brute, like the 2H2E sword, but taken further. One blow, one kill. Likely a mountain of a man.

Mace: Priest; it's been mentioned, but I'd like to emphasize that clergymen on the battlefield historically wielded blunt weapons to prevent shedding blood.
    Flail: Evil knights.
Polearms, spears, halberds: 'Generic' cool is to depict them as battlefield fodder. Would probably be more generic 'cool' as warriors with less-than-plate armor valuing precise strikes.

I'd probably say a single pistol is a good weapon to mix with a bare-hand melee for an agile fighter. Sort of grab&throw, before shooting them point-blank in the head or something.

Oh, a shotguns for zombie-hunters or vigilante gang-busters (good for crowd-control if you can knock a target out the window from range).

Repeating Crossbow: as above, or alternatively some kind of "weapons expert", a la Dragonlance gnomes with a bent for dreaming up new and crazy ways to kill people. Also lends a sort of steampunky flair, in my opinion.

The saber was a cavalry weapon originally, the curved blade helps distribute the greater impact imparted by the horse, so it doesn't jar the wielder's arm (or damage the blade) as much. Generally it was associated with light cavalrymen at the beginning of the 19th century while heavy cavalry often still used a straight bladed sword.

Quite frankly the vast majority of armies used spears as primary weaponry.

Amongst organized professional armies, I think only the Romans and possibly a Chinese Dynasty's army wielded swords as their exclusive primary arm. The only others to do so are irregular fighting forces like Celts, Iberians, Ethiopians/Sudanese, ect.

In an irregular force, be it barbarians or a feudal army, you would get men who wielded whatever they really wanted or had, but axes or swords or maces in most armies were the sidearm to take out once you put aside or lost or used up your bow, lance, or spear.

In reality, spear + shield was the default all over the world for the normal fighting types. Sparta was just one of the best disciplined and skilled forces to use this combo.

Hard to say. Brutal discipline probably reached its apex during the Frederickian era, although men beaten and lashed into functioning like perfect, flawless automata may still not compare to those who are raised since birth for war and little else.

After someone mentioned overstuffed orphanages in another thread, I had an idea. Why not use all the orphan children as Spartans? Chuck them into the wild somewhere and make raise them that way. Instant army.

well, the thread theme was what weapons evoke what kind of characters in cool ways. Maybe I am wrong in the facts, but thats just how I've been exposed to and -feel- when given the imagery of a given weapon.

Also, we need more... esoteric weapons.

Flintlock Pistol - Could be either historically accurate and used in most duels and for officers in armies or romanticized and made into an awesome steampunky sidearm.

Wouldn't katars require more 'abrupt' motions, since a lot of them were just punching daggers?

Modern warfare being what it is (very fast paced), soldiers have to be able to adapt and think for themselves rather than running on rails, so to speak. Beating them into automata could make them fearless, but not necessarily as useful.

I'm pretty sure the ONLY instance of a vampire hunter using a whip is castlevania. Disregarding niche or wanna-be internet artists/comics, of course.

Similar for treasure hunters, that there is only one instance: indiana jones.

If anything, whips seem to be a common element of supporting female villains from the late 70's to maybe the mid 90's.

There's two kinds of flails: The morning star kind with a ball and chain, and a seperate kind made of two wooden sticks. The latter is popular among egyptian settings, as they were used by farmers to seperate grain from husks, and as a symbol for the mighty pharaohs. The former I guess is just another take on a medieval weapon, for soldiers and the like.

Yeah, WotC decided to call ball-headed flails Morningstars because it's easier to differentiate that way. Or just because they're dumb. I know at least in NWN that Morningstars have both piercing and bludgeoning damage, which is stupid.

When I said Weeaboo Samuri I actually meant that, I see Katanas more as a weapon carried by weeaboos dressing up as samuri than actual Samuri. I don't think it's as important for an actual Samuri to carry a specific weapon.
