Reposting my homebrew rules for Spelljammer ship-to-ship encounters in D&D 4e. You can also use them for naval combat, fantasy airships, and really large steampunk tanks, at least in theory.

The only thing I've altered since the last posting has been to make a small change to allow NPCs to attack the PCs' masts and crew. Other things I may work on in time:

    -Trading
    -Ship modifications
    -Morale
    -Setting
    -Engine & Weapon types

Let's have your criticism and suggestions, /tg/. And thanks again, Elementalistfag, I was the one who requested you post your templates.

The Dolphin is the best ship for an adventuring party. It's medium-large and it has another ship sitting on the back, for landing on planets. The second ship looks like an ordinary boat so you don't arouse suspicion.

I've often wondered this myself. I think they look awesome, but I need a good in-game reasoning behind this particular style.

I "get" the boat-as-spacecraft thing, given that you could evolve the concept of an airship to a spaceship. The rest of these designs though seem purely decorative, or designed to intimidate.

The nautilus, squid ship and hammership all have rams for use in battle. The spider ships (owned by slavers) use their legs for grappling and presumably also as masts.

Partly it's that, partly it's because certain shapes augment maneuvering in space. It's also the helmsman's skill and the grade of the helm. Helmsmen should be NPCs or wand dual-wieldan magic users (of any kind) though; the helm drains all memorized spells and prevents memorizing new spells for 24 hours after use.
    >> Anonymous 09/03/08(Wed)20:01 No.2497574
    >>2497560
... So it would be totally acceptable for a Artificer to be the helmsman, if you wanted to bring a little Ebberon into your Spelljammer.

It's that there is no reason not to - it does not inihibit or enhance performance, so fashion is ultimate.
    >> Anonymous 09/03/08(Wed)20:17 No.2497678
    >>2497660
well, I can think of special cases where you wouldn't want anything like this... landing on planets incognito in the ocean and sailing to land, for example.

Also going unnoticed is probably of high priority to many adventurers, they would want a pitch black ship with no frills against a pitch black space.

It also seems a lot of these fashion bits would be easily broken with a single hull ram, incurring heavy repairs.

I mean.. basically.. our tanks don't have lots of pretty shit all over them, just some spraypainted slogans or logos at best. Military has always been all function, no form.

    >Helmsmen should be NPCs or wand dual-wieldan magic users (of any kind) though; the helm drains all memorized spells and prevents memorizing new spells for 24 hours after use.

OP here, I'm going to drop that element from my version, because I think it's stupid. A clever(?) play on words does not equal good game design.

Currently I'm thinking ships gain the ability to break orbit via a ritual similar to Raise Land. As far as moving about once in space, I'm trying to decide between 'the ether wind does it' and 'a variety of interesting sources of power, including material, dreams, magic, summoned spirits, and dangerous esoteric elements' or both.

I think you could even find room for physics-based propulsion once in space. If there's a decanter of endless water, why not cannos of endless flame?

or even just gunpowder-based propulsion. It would have a horrible maneuverability, but it would make for a cool low-level ship where the adventurers must outrun or avoid most enemies.
    >> Anonymous 09/03/08(Wed)20:28 No.2497732
Hey guys, you're arguing about ship design in Spelljammer. You know how it was designed?

'I've got an idea. Let's put D&D in space.'

That's about it. You should all just relax (la la la).
    >> Anonymous 09/03/08(Wed)20:28 No.2497736
    >>2497720

Actually, water would provide better propulsion than fire. It has more mass and the decanter projects it at a steady rate, no need to accellerate it.
