    Settlers of catan.
Its an awesome game, takes very little time to explain to new players, and has a moderate amount of strategy.
    Diplomacy/and-or/ Rail Baron
This is the game you bring out when you have way too many friends. rules arguments, corner cases, and general backstabbing galore in these.
    Zombies!!!
a Beer-and-pretzels survival horror game. fun times abound.
    Redneck Life
I highly reccomend this game. hilarious fun. it's not so much who wins, it's more who loses the least. the player with the most teeth at the end of the game wins!

Resource management, trading, and completely different each time you play, but the game is simple enough to learn the first time you play.

I couldn't tell you the number of times the epithets flew when we moved the robber on to someone's best producing tile.

It's got a few expansions that allow for even more play options. Cities and Knights and The River and Fishermen are the ones I have, I want to get Seafarers and see how that one is.

Only one problem, the base game is for 4 people max. To play with more you got to buy a player expansion for another 20 bucks, and it's the same for each expansion.

Still, it's one of the best board games around.

seafarers adds islands to tthe game, which adds yet another strategy for expansion. in the orignal game, some players can get blocked off completely, and resort to alternative ways to win (development cards). with seafarers, the players stuck on the edges can move off and get to the islands.

The simplest board game I have ever played, but one of the ones with the most strategy. Premise is just match the tiles to complete geographical features. Use your followers (Meeples) to claim features. Gain points, repeat until all the tiles are gone.

There are like 5 or 6 expansions for this, which I do not have yet, but I do have them on the XBox Live Arcade, and each one adds a new dimension to the game. The expansions are about $15-20 depending on the store you find them at, and I'll be getting a few in the next few weeks.

Fourthed on Settlers. Last Night on Earth is a pretty fun zombie board game. I don't feel the energy to describe it, but it's four heroes against one or two players in charge of moving the zombies around. The zombies usually win, but that just means the humans have a challenge.

This game is like a hybrid of Catan and Carcassonne. Each player plays off of his own field, but they all use the same 'bank' of parts.

Each player is dealt money until they hit 20 or more total. Then 4 money cards are dealt face up. Each player places their fountain piece in front of them, and then 4 building tiles are placed in the reserve. You can only buy a tile from the reserve if you have the right amount of money, in the same color of the spot on the reserve. If you have the exact amount, you can buy again. There is money reserve there as well, you can take multiple money cards if the total is less than 5, or any one card of any denomination.
You can play a card immediately on your Alhambra, or place it in a reserve to be used later.

This game has fucking TONS of strategy, like buying pieces that you don't need just to keep them away from other people.Scoring happens in 3 phases, that pop in during money replenishment.

This is probably my favorite boardgame.

House rule Monopoly is just about the only way to play it anymore.

Taxes and payments go to Free Parking.
Roll 4 fudge dice to get total movement (4 forward or backward, or anything in between including staying put, but you must encounter the space again)
To get out of jail, must pay 50 or roll all 4 fudge dice the same face. If you don't make it on the third roll, you must pay 100 to get out of jail. You cannot collect rent in jail.
If you land on another player, you can choose to mug them. Roll against them with standard dice. If you win, you get the difference in the rolls in dollars. If they win, they can choose to either take 5 dollars from you, or put you in jail.

    etc..

Yeah, that can be a bitch. It can run the other way too, though. I had a guy get fuming mad at me when he realized I was going easy on him because it was his first time playing.

That's why when I'm teaching a new game I try to get as many new players in as possible and just sit off to the side. I'll act as a rules referee and try to offer help to everybody equally. I've found that this arrangement usually results in the least amount of butthurt when someone loses.

Arkham horror takes my group about 4 hours to finish. We play with the Durnwhich Expansion and usually have about 6 players.

Without going into a rant, I will agree with you in principle.

In practice, on the other hand, you're going into the game with the explicit goal of introducing someone to a game they've never played before, and with the implicit goal of getting them interested in playing the game again. Both sides know the new guy is going to lose (barring a game that relies on chance for most of its mechanics), the challenge is in making that loss as enjoyable for the other guy as possible.

You would think that, but we just introduced another guy to Catan a couple weeks ago and he won his first game. We were not taking it easy on him either.

I was actually pretty pissed, we were both sitting at 9 points, he buys a development card, passes the turn along, I play out and think I've won. Turns out the Dev card he bought was a damned chapel. He thought he couldn't 'use' it until the next turn. Technically true of most dev cards.

They key is being fair with the explanations, telling them a trick or two, letting them see how you're playing.

I used to play Space Hulk, then forgot about it.

Years later I got interested again and wanted to get the expansions,of course my local store had none, the system having died by now.

So I drove to a Games Workshop store and asked if there's any backstock left or something, the guys there just laughed.

This is what I prefer to do, but we usually had trouble just getting enough players for whatever. I can't just go easy on them because I'm ordinarily far too good at strategy games and they call me on it.

So we tend to play a lot of nomic-type chaosfucks instead.

This winter. The Black Industries version was very good, but the counters were hard to see and it had a couple mistakes on cards and the board, but it plays like 2E did, which is a good thing.

Fantasy Flight is supposed to be giving you new counters, more cards and the cool thing is, if you aren't adverse to using older stuff, they'll have an 'upgrade' for the 4E game that will bring it up to speed with the new version they're releasing this winter.

I'm getting the big version and donating my 4E game to my FLGS so more people can enjoy Talisman.

Seconding Betrayal at House on the Hill. Scary action fun for all ages (even my 10-year old female cousin loves it), every game is different (it has 50 possible missions) and each playthrough takes about an hour with no setup, so you can play two or three missions in a night.

I totally suggest Descent. It's like a new HeroQuest, and with the expansions and everything, it's hot a buttload of characters and settings, and you can use pieces to make your own dungeon crawls. Not to mention that the DM actually gets to play too (he draws cards and plays monsters and traps against the players) so playing the DM is something people WANT to do instead of not wanting to.

Otherwise Arkham Horror (which kicks ass)
