  • We've gotten reports of an annoying, beeping ad that was appearing in the 468x60 banner slot on the NWS boards. I hate these ads, and it's always been our policy not to run any ads with sound or flashing, etc. Our shitty banner network farms out impressions to other shitty banner networks, and this is the result. Apologies for the inconvenience—I've switched the slot back to our in-house rotation that just links to 4chan pages (and as a result, has no annoying ads).

So last session the characters found the First Age manse of the circle's Twilight.
Well, they found an abandoned library. Guess who was the half-stark-raving-mad demon librarian?
(and guess who her Second and Third Circle Demons are?)

    Koa, the Librarian
    Demon of the First Circle
Progeny of the Maiden of Shade and Knowledge

In Malfeas, the Demon City, lies is a large library of colored glass sitting atop a castle of brass and blood-stained lead. it is the Heartless Library, and Within it lie all the books that will never be written. Not those that once were, but have been destroyed or lost or forgotten, nor those that will, one day, eventually be written, for those things are bound by Fate and under the watchful eye of Yu Shan: the Heartless Library holds only those book that have never been and will never be. Most of them appear as utterly meaningless and incomprehensible, but it is mere lack of context: each of them holds true wisdom.
The lesser demons known as Koa scour the endless corridors of the Heartless Library at the whim of their mistress. They resemble female humans with a skin of paper, on which characters and letters from every alphabet, penned in perfect calligraphy, travel, like leaves floating on the calm surface of a lake. Their eyes and mouths are hollow, showing their insides: inky blackness.
Sorcerors summon Koa only if they own a library or something akin to one, because without one to care for the Koa will slowly lose herself and become insane. But their mistress cares little about losing one or two of them, and, as long as there are books, they care little about being summoned from Malfeas and being pressed into servitude.
Koa have a sixth sense that allows them to navigate any filing system with perfect accuracy, but are difficult to care for. They feed on stories, knowledge and information: someone (possibly the summoner) must talk to them, from time to time, about some scholarly topic or narrating poetry or tales. The Koa substantiates the received information in a leather-bound tome that slowly forms inside their hollow bodies. When the tome is ready, they rip themselves open and offer it to their summoner.

The Koa can also truly eat knowledge - as she hears something, she can remove it from the memory of the speaker and keep it only for herself. He can do this at her whim to mortals, but only to willing Exalts. A summoner who wishes to summon a Koa, either mortal or Exalted, can, instead of having her serve him for a year and a day, bind her to himself and a library for eternity (or until the Koa is slain) by agreeing to lose something from his memory forever. Because of this, sometimes Koa are summoned by those who wish to forget their past, or hide secrets or forbidden knowledge.
The eaten knowledge reforms in a tome with a polished brass cover, and, unlike the leatherbound tomes that the Koa creates from simply listening to others, she will treasure it as her most precious thing, like a children of the love between her and her summoner. For, eternally bound together, she will love her, and the more she eats her mind and knowledge, the more she loves her.

Made it up myself. I'm also statting up their mistress, the second circle demon The Maiden of Shade and Knowledge, and her own third circle demon, Remilia, the Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil, one of the souls of Adjoran, the Silent Wind.

Other Second Circle Demons are going to be Izayoi, the Sixteen Day Moon, and Beautiful Scarlet Bell. And of course Flandre as another Third Circle Demon.

Yeah, my players don't know Touhou, so I can rip it for names, ideas and themes. Even if it's what you'd call a side-quest (the "main plot" is about abyssals and deathlords and forgotten civilizations and doomsday devices that might actually be preferable to a regular apocalypse), I love making up stuff and I love demons in Exalted, so I might actually be posting moar later.

As for their precious thing, the Abyssals already stole them. And by "precious thing", I mean "a Soulbreaker Orb"

Spoiler: The proper name is "goremaul".

    Anyway.

The Maiden of Shade and Knowledge
    Demon of the Second Circle
(The Wisdom Soul of the Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil)

The Maiden of Shade and Knowledge lives in the Heartless Library, the tall, cylindrical building of seven-colored glass that rises from the dark shape of the Mansion of Blood, a sturdy, brutal, bladed building of rough brass and lead, stained by seven different types of blood, sitting at the crossway of seven roads, lying where Malfeas, Kimberry and Cecelyne meet. It is the fortress of two of the souls of Adjoran, the Silent Wind, and those that reside within are the only beings in all the demon world which can live in silence without fear of having their life taken by the Yozi.
The Heartless Library is boundless, and contains every book that has never existed and will never exist. Its mistress looks much like a young human girl, sickly and pale, weak, diseased, her bloody eyes two pale purple flames that flicker like dying candles. Her skin is a poor, colorless thing, and her long purple hair is almost grayish in hue. Despite this, she has the beauty of a fragile flower. She wears pallid, silken dresses, woven out of the flesh of the Neomah that Adjoran, the soul of her soul, slays with her silence. Around her orbit slowly five bound jade tomes, one for each color, hovering in mid-air and each softly singing the song of its element.
Thanks to the Library, the Maiden has the knowledge of everything that will never be, and this means that, with due reasoning, she might infer knowledge of everything that actually is. However, the process of learning something from its negation is long and tiresome, and this explains her consumed appearance and her existence as a recluse in her Library.
For the Maiden pursues nothing more than knowledge. She knows that it would take her more than eternity to discover everything that is, but she does it nonetheless, because it is her nature.
    >> Resident Exaltedfag 05/17/08(Sat)07:55 No.1755685
         File :1211025310.jpg-(101 KB, 567x801, patchu2.jpg)
    101 KB
She dislikes being summoned, because this robs her of her time, and she hates every place that is not her library and wouldn't mind seeing the entire universe save for the Mansion of Blood destroyed, but it is nothing more than an idle thought: she has neither the power nor the will to waste time, strength and resources in something that tiresome.
However, if the summoner offers her books and tomes of knowledge from Creation, she might serve him willingly, if only for a short time. If he is merely mortal, or a mortal in some way or another displeases her, she will drag him screaming back to the Heartless Library, where the Koa, her librarian-servants, will rip him to shreds, and make a bookshelf out of his bones and books out of his mind, bound in the leather of his skin and written with his blood.
Summoning her is difficult, because her Third Circle Demon mistress, Remilia, has eaten and destroyed her True Name. She can however be called by summoning a Koa, surrendering to her the will and the ritual to summon the Maiden (thereby forgetting both that you wanted to summon her, and how to summon her), and then, after the Koa has shaped the stolen knowledge into a brass-bound book, banish her back to her mistress, which will appear after exactly 49 seconds in front of the summoner with the book in her hands, restoring the lost knowledge to him.
    >> Resident Exaltedfag 05/17/08(Sat)07:56 No.1755692
         File :1211025406.jpg-(163 KB, 850x637, patchu3.jpg)

After being summoned, she will bind herself to a room, and refuse to abandon it. The room will slowly become an access to the Heartless Library, and beings from Creation wandering too far into the Maiden's realm might well find themselves lost, or, worse even, they might discover that they have passed from the Heartless Library to the Mansion of Blood in Malfeas. Furthermore, she has no mercy for any that dare steal even a single book from her library, save for only one person. Only one individual exists at a time in Creation who can steal books from the Library without incurring in her wrath, and the Maiden loves him secretly.
The Maiden knows Sorcery and holds power over the elements of Creation: She can open one of her five books of jade, and let her knowledge pour around her and reshape reality. However, during one week, for five days out of seven she can control only one element at a time. On the sixth day, she cannot open not even one of her jade books. But on the seventh day, all five elements are hers to command. Many summon her to use her powers or learn spells of Sorcery from her, or to ask for her counsel. But she counsels, and nothing more, because she loathes and despises physical work and activity of any kind.
She knows every single spell of the Terrestrial Circle, but only one of the Celestial and one of the Solar circle, and she has never used them and no one save herself knows what kind of spells they are, or even if and how she can cast them at all (for the Solar circle is commonly held as reserved to the Chosen of the Unconquered Sun and no one else).
Once the terms of her summoning and binding have expired, she will return to the Mansion of Blood, and the room disappears with her, along with everything in it, as if it never existed. Only then Heaven does notice the gaping hole in Destiny that she has made.

No, not at all. The barrier was set up by a group of 'Youkai sages' including Yukari to create a sanctuary for Youkai who were finding it increasingly difficult to live with humans. That's why the percentage of youkai to humans is so high, and why the human villages consist mostly of descendants of youkai hunters.

As far as Touhou is concerned, I believe she's a 'unique' type Youkai, much like Yukari, Yuka or Rumia - she has dominion over a certain something, and is the only one of her kind.

My ranking, from more to least appropriate:
    1) Elemental (wood)
    2) Lesser goddess of insects
    3) Dragon-Blooded (wood-aspected)
    4) Lunar Exalted (changing moon) with a firefly totem.

She just isn't... main-character-heroine-ish to be an Exalted, IMHO. I'd limit exaltation to Reimu (Zenith), Marisa (Night), maybe Sakuya (Infernal Exalted) and Youmu (Dusk-caste Abyssal. Yuyuko is clearly a Deathlord.)

*Flips open his Compass of Celestian Directions III: Yu Shan*

    Ahem. As requested.

YUkari Yakumo, Countless Purple Clouds, Celestial Daimyo of Borders and Gaps.
    Goddess of the Fifth Rank

Residing in a deceptively small and rural-looking palace in Yu Shan called Mayohiga, sitting square in the middle of a large forest park in the Lunargent Ecological Protectorate district. A park that most would ever suspect belonging in its entirety to the owner of the unassuming villetta at its centre.
Countless Purple Clouds is the goddess of borders, gaps, separation, distance, difference and distinctions, a subtle but ridiculously vast and important portfolio. Much like her own sphere of influence, she might appear unassuming to the casual onlooker: no vast, lavish palace of gold and marble, no legion of servant gods at her beck and call, no incredibly showy and expensive dresses or other trappings of power that usually gods of the Fifth Rank enjoy: she lives alone with a servant and her servant's servant and seems satisfied with what most high-ranking gods would call a humble life. Despite this, she is almost stupidly powerful, and some gossip in Heaven says that she might have even been an Incarna once, only to step down from her position before the Primordial War. Whether this rumor is true or not, she is respected and feared by everyone who knows her.
Interestingly enough, she is one of the very few rank five gods without any cult. She is virtually unknown in Creation and no one really prays to her consciously, but the power she receives from the association with the abstract concept of border is more than enough.

Countless Purple Clouds is a member of the Bureau of Abstract Matters and Celestial Concerns, she... well, she doesn't actually DO anything there. She avoids work like the plague, and does not participate in the endless backstabbing, bribery, betrayal and jockeying for position that characterizes the Bureau. While she is somewhat friends with Ryzala, Lady of Bureaucracy and Paperwork, and with Lytek, the Daimyo of Exaltation, she simply does not concern herself with their ambitions.
Her boss, technically, is Taru-Han, the Lady of Souls and chief of the Department of Abstract Matters, but she has given up on Countless Purple Clouds long ago. All that Countless Purple Clouds seems interested to do is, in no particular order of importance, eating, drinking, sleeping, stirring up trouble both in Creation and in Heaven, and playing the Games of Divinity without any seriousness.

What most gods (and a fair number of Sidereal Exalted) don't know is that she is also a very high-ranking member of the Violet Bier of Sorrows and a close friend and supporter of Wayang and Saturn herself. More then once she has helped the Bureau of Destiny out, although almost always on a whim or out of boredom and often causing about as much trouble as she solved (only someplace else). She is also infamous for sending young Sidereals on fool's errands across Yu Shan and Creation, and is a sympathizer of the Golden Faction just because she thinks it's fun.

OTHER NOTES: Countless Purple Clouds' power of manipulating borders, both matierial and conceptual, make her incredibly powerful and versatile, almost omnipotent and probably one of the greatest powers in Yu Shan short of the Incarna and a scant few other rank five gods. However, her laziness and easygoing personality mean that it is extremely difficult to get her involved, or even interested, in anything. Her favourite uses for her powers are: opening portals that instantly connect two very distant places, creating a pocket dimension in Elsewhere where she can hide things or sleep peacefully, and creating seals that prevent movement and communication.

In the depths of an ancient forest in the east, on the borders of the middlemarch, lives a very strange firefly, called in hushed and fearful tones by the few mortals that live there as "the monarch of the insects".
This creature is called Wriggle Nightbug.
Wriggle came to being when the local swarms of insects (including several large hives of giant insect, their size increased by wyld exposure) began to undertake an activity that for an insect, passed for prayer. These prayers had nowhere to go however, as their chitchinous worship was too alien to be recognized by Yu-Shuan.
So seemingly at random, this worship empowered a single Firefly to be their god, and the insects of creation obey her without question.
Despite being originally an insect, Wriggle Nightbug has the form of a somewhat androgynous female (a fact that must NEVER be said to her face), the only insectile tells she possesses are a pair of insect-like antennae protruding just above her hairline and pair of wings that on first inspection appear to be a dark blue and red cloak.
Her human appearance appears to be the result of some sort of genetic group memory from the insects who formed her of the primordial who created insects.

More often than not she is content to simply live a life of no responsibilities using her command over insects to make them perform for her varied amusements.
Sometimes she also attacks lost travellers out of no real malice, but rather a sense of spoilt mischievousness that has never been tempered with denial.
Though she is considered the god of the insects of the east, the truth is all of her power solely stems from the worship of mortal insects, and although their number is almost limitless, the amount of power the prayers of each insect grants her is basically next to nothing.
As a result her power is severely lacking, and even Exalted could brush her off like (ironically enough) an insect.
Another weakness is that her demesne is her own mortal body, and should it be destroyed, then she herself would killed.

Stats to follow in a few minutes.
Would have done it sooner, but I had to watch the FA cup final.

Nice, I like her. A really "alien" and "different" god. Just a couple (of couple) of questions:

    1) Exalted never used a "-3" health level. Is this on purpose to make her more alien and unique, together with her other amusing weirdnesses (using Solar charms, her particular version of the Ride charm, etc)?

    2) You forgot to say how many points she has in each specialty (such as "War: 2 (specialty: Large Armies +3)"

    3) needs SERIOUSLY higher appearance because cutebug is cute.

Well fuck, I don't even play Exalted, and I'm quite impressed at what's here. Bravo, everyone, bravo. There's one thing I have to ask about Exalted though. I inquired about the mechanics and combat system of Exalted in my usual IRC group (which contains several Exaltedfags), and from what I gathered, it's much much easier to break Exalted with powergamed builds compared to D&D because some of the charms are undeniably overpowered and broken. Stuff like invincible kaiju Lunars. As much as I love powergaming, it kind of worries me that Exalted might not be very balanced.

How true is this claim that Exalted is not very balanced when it comes to powergaming?
    >> Anonymous 05/17/08(Sat)15:39 No.1757504
    >>1757494

I know it can be broken, but you really don't need to bother. In Exalted, you are powerful. there is really no need to try and find loopholes to break the game. Powerful combo's are okay, just don't be a dick with it basically.

The point of powergaming isn't to make you powerful, it's to make you more powerful than you're supposed to be, but on a mechanical scale. I was just asking about the mechanical balance of Exalted because my group was essentially saying that without generously hellbanning stuff from the (few) splatbooks, things can get out of hand even quicker than in D&D, and that Exalted is a game where things really ARE more balanced using only the core book.
    >> Anonymous 05/17/08(Sat)15:47 No.1757556
    >>1757547

I've only run with the core book. someone managed to get a 30+ melee dice pool just from that, which everyone thought was pretty awesome, but it didn't break the game. no matter what you do, there's a way stop it, no matter how powerful you are, someone can better you. Thats the nature of exalted.

No, that was me not knowing what the hell I was doing and giving her a mish-mash of different charms from the Roll of Divinity and the Core book.
Besides I kinda needed those thrown charms in order to help replicate the Danmaku.

I understand what you were thinking, it's just that she's one of my favorite Touhou characters...

    >>1757494

It's easy to powergame and optimize builds and everything in Exalted because the system is built with the basic premise that "you shouldn't, really."
You still CAN. it's easier than most other games because the game designers made the system thinking "let's make something that lets characters be awesome", not "let's make something that players won't be able to powergame".

On the other side, rules are a bit more flexible than in D&D, so while it's easier to powergame, even a heavily powergamed and optimized character probably won't be "hax", simply because there are so many things that are "hax" in their own way and within the rules that it's impossible to make something that wins everything.

So... >>1757594 is right. You shouldn't really look at Exalted from the powergaming perspective, not because "ZOMG POWERGAMING IS WRONG" (because the Stormwind Fallacy teaches us that it isn't true), but because IMHO powergaming in Exalted is neither fun nor rewarding nor effective enough (while it is, for example, in D&D). In short, I don't think you'd like it.
