Ok, because the last thread that eventually moved to this subject had at least some interest, I'm going to make a fresh thread on the subject. I'm willing to try GMing a game centered on magical girls and things of that nature. I can't promise it'd be any good, because I lack experience as a GM, but the only way to get better is to actually do it, right? Anyway, as of the last thread, there was no general consensus on what system to use, but I'm considering either Tri-Stat dX, OVA, or something like a modified version of Trigger Discipline. Or we can try making yet another random genre-specific system, but that's probably too much work for too little reward. Things that would be included:Magical girls, henshin heroes as replacements for the more traditional magical knights, because powered armor and a motorcycle beats a tuxedo and a mask. Also a lot of action, encouragement to be flashy and fancy with attacks, and possibly at least a little focus on everyday life. There will probably be a lesser emphasis on large groups of mooks or slow-moving plots and more emphasis on fights between characters of similar power levels and things like that. I guess I'm just taking cues from Nanoha and running with it.
I do not like this thread. Thus, I shall sage and then hide it.Good day, sir.
In before "gb2/a/" and such.Henceforth, I will be posting the gayest magical girl pictures I have.
I'm somewhat game for this. Know nothing of tri-stat or OVA but I was actually thinking trigger discipline could easily be moded to play a magic girl game.

>>1728103I'd noticed it, but wasn't active or otherwise thinking of such things at the time, sorry. >>1728089I'll look into it, but doesn't this just use Tri-Stat rules in the first place?Naturally. Although it does get issues if said Dark Magical Girl is an NPC. Because once she joins the heroes, well, the usual could happen. >>1728070Tri-Stat can be found for free online. >>1728214I also meant people bitching about the GMPC. Because if they start as an NPC, that's what they could become. Not that they'd be any fancier than the rest of the party, though. One alternative is to conspire with someone to run the character, but whatever. As for homosexual subtext, why the hell not? The game is a bunhc of (I presume) guys pretending to be teenaged girls with magical powers. Or teenaged and older guys who can transform into armored heroes. Whatever appeals to the players is likely to end up happening.

And Friday evenings are out because that's when I play CthulhuTech. >>1728242>>1728255The reason I want to use a system with very flexible character creation is so I can basically tell players they can make up whatever concept they want, as long as it falls into the very general archetypes of the genre/setting. Forums tend to lean more toward freeform stuff with little to no rules whatsoever and no real reasons to roll dice. Which can be ok, but I've seen the sort of fail it can devolve into.

I would plan on only running the game for a couple hours for each session. Any thoughts on the system to use?Man, if I'm going through with this, I'll need to come up with a basic plot structure and other such things. Probably, I'd spend a session on things like figuring out what all the players are playing and what they want out of the game, because I'm new at GMing and feel that it's better to set things up in ways the players can enjoy them than have them derail a carefully-planned campaign they hate. The more we discuss this, the more likely I am to do it. Because some sort of magical girl themed gaming appeals to me; I just didn't necessarily intend to run it as GM. Well, I guess it'll give me a chance to practice running villains.

>>1728372I'm not familiar with either of those programs, but I could probably figure them out before game time. Or during. Tri-Stat is pretty involved in character creation (hence my recommendation of a generator program to cover the math) but if you can't stat it, you probably didn't start with enough character points. Last thread, I'd posted stats for a time-hax, knife-throwing maid and a plant youkai who could throw giant energy beams. I'm tempted to become an tripfag, at least for this thread, so I can be identified as the idiot planning on running the show. I might take the same plan I'd take if I started a game of Exalted, and just begin with a sandbox session or two in which the characters are put in the same general area and allowed to meet and otherwise just goof around. Lets the players get a feel for their characters and the system. At least one instance of combat would occur to get used to that.

Well, I'm running out of stuff to say, unless I get asked any more specific questions. So ,to summarize what's been said so far...System: Probably Tri-Stat dX. It's free, relatively involved on character creation so I can guarantee any concept will work (also attributes are purely effects-based, you can explain how they work and look like however you want to), and I'm pretty sure I can boil the mechanics down to a bare minimum and keep them there. Cons are creating a character involves keeping track of enough numbers that I'd recommend a program to help with it. Probably, games will be handled on OpenRPG or a similar program, and probably on weekends during the daytime (by my time zone). The first session or two will be more on creating characters and placing them in a sandbox setting; plot will come later. Some character archetypes or the like to consider:Magical Girl (Cute Witch, Magical warrior, and so on)Dark Magical GirlMagic Knight/Henshin HeroAnd, it might also be worth considering whether a character is better at certain ranges, or if they're things like a glass cannon or fragile speedster.
While I like the image dump (Though, it could go a little deeper into Cheesecake, or ecchi, or hentai territory), Lets get some more information and character ideas and the like.
>>1728619So to avoid me having to do my own research, what can you tell me about Tristat dX?And what kind of setting is it? Japan were we're all the little girl, or fantasy land, were we're all the little girl?
>>1728622Well still sticking with shota character. General idea is I'm going to not rock the boat with him being "magical", just think of him as having knowledge of magic workings and access to magic powered artifacts. Thats all I have at the moment.
>>1728667Inventor/Artificer/Mechanic type?Or are you just the weak link in the activation of your artifact's powers?
How about BESM 3, people? IMHO it's better than Tri-Stat (which is more or less BESM 2)
>>1728703Probably along the lines of Inventor/Artificer type. Something along the lines of him knowing how magic works but is unable to directly control it as a magical girl would. DnD artificer is probably really close to the idea from what i hear, just think of that with a liberal splashing of fighter to keep up with the girls.
>>1728637I linked where you can get the rulebook and character generator earlier in the thread. >>1728187But, to give a basic rundown:Characters are defined by three stats, Body, Mind and Soul. Each one covers very broad categories of actions, as one might guess. The system uses character points for everything, and you need to buy up a character's stats from zero (I might change this). Stats themselves are pretty cheap, though. The rest of a character's points goes to giving them attributes, which are things like special attacks, or other advantages as in GURPS. Generally, the higher the rating in an attribute, the better it gets and the more it can do. Some attributes can be further modified to have specific ranges, areas of effect, or numbers of targets. Most attributes can also be given drawbacks to lower their point costs, and it can be very hard to resist at least a little min-maxing in this regard. The "dX" comes from the fact that the game intends the use of different base die sizes for the basic rolls, depending on the general power scale of the game. So, it could be anything from a d4 to a d20, I think. I'll probably be setting character power in the d6 to d10 range, which is around 100-200 character points or so, if I remember. For the setting, I'd probably set it in something vaguely similar to modern Japan rather than a generic fantasyland. It might be a magical world sort of like Mid-Childa from Nanoha StrikerS, in which case, magic and magical powers are nothing new, or it might be earth, which makes things a little different. Either way, unless a character makes an effort to hide their appearance, there won't be rules to conceal a magical girl's true identity. It's more fun that way.
>>1728739>like Mid-Childa from Nanoha StrikerSfunny how I'm getting involved with this and I haven't even watched any of that show.
>>1728739Yeah, I know you linked it, but like I said, so that I don't have to do as much research on my own. Sounds good so far though.Care to give an example of a character sheet?
>>1728765I've never seen any of these thingsI haven't even seen Fate/Stay Night and I'm basing my character on Saber.
>>1728706I have BESM 3, I think. I personally dislike the inflation of character points the game did, and never really tried making a character or comparing the rules changes. I wouldn't mind hearing how you feel it's better, if you can list any specific points. Just to mention a few character ideas I've had for things along this vein (but won't be using if I'm the GM):A tekkaman/guyver-style henshin hero who got dragged into a magical girlish setting as a cameo. The sort who occasionally arrives to help other characters out of a really dangerous situation. Has an armored alternate form that can fly and toss out good damage in melee or at range. There's a reason they'd likely get busted down to plot device duty. A relatively generic magical girl whose words upon accepting her job were "whatever, I'll do it." An athletic tomboy who does gymnastics and parkour and fights with a pair of katar.
I'm tempted to suggest the old Marvel Superheroes game. That would be a rather cool piece of retro intermixed with it.
>>1728778What is this "Henshin" you keep mentioning?
>>1728774>>1728765Basically, magic works mostly by force of will and such and is powered/limited by internal reserves. You can do strange things with it.I could give a brief lecture on the defensive magics if needed. That's practically all I remember.
>>1728774google is my friend http://www.cavalcadeofwhimsy.com/rpg/tristatsheet.pdf
You'll need excessive amounts of power-ups.>>1728798Power Rangers type shows, I believe.
>>1728798It's "transform" or something in Japanese. They are mandatory. They are at least a minute and a half long and involve gratuitous blurred nudity and ridiculous effects such as butterflies exploding into little sparkly coloured blobs.
>>1728778Personally, i think that char point inflation is a GOOD thing there. Gives you a finer control over the character.Making characters is a long, number-crunching affair, but allows you to customize them in a very neat way... and, it's a job you have to do only once, anyway. plus, IMHO, roll-high is better than roll-low,anc, compared with BESM 2nd edition, BESM 3 has a more solid combat system. the multiplier stuff and the new "weapon" attribute and its advantages/disadvantages systems is by leaps and bounds better than the old one.Still, if we're gonna use BESM 3, the GM should put on some fairly accurate and well-explained benchmarks, or, even better, some templates.
>>1728812That's Super Sentai.
>>1728765It's a good show. I'd recommend the first two seasons first. You won't need to be familiar with Nanoha to play, but it is my main influence for the general style and theme for events. More action and single combat, less monster of the week. >>1728766I certainly can. I'll just be typing it up and then copying it over, so it won't be completely perfect, and I'll be leaving out the details about what everything does or how derived values are calculated. I'll see if I have a character statted up who'd be interesting and not full of nested abilities or other complex stuff. On tri-stat, I should add I'll likely use the energy points optional rule, as it gives characters another way to recoup a few character points, and having a "mana" reserve that might be necessary to power certain attacks might be a good thing. Alternatively, one can use limited shots and literal metaphysical ammunition).
>>1728798Also, I'm interested in knowing how many people are going to be doing this, and what wacky pedo ideas they've got: So roll call!Like I said, I'm going to be something like Saber, breastplate, tasset, dress, sword. little girl, big powers and scared of men, and other things. The little sister type. I swear to God I will call every single one of you Onee-san.
>>1728798It means transform. If you watch alot of shows with transformation then they'll yell it alot. Sailor Moon would yell it during her transformation for example.
I'd love to play in this game. Right now I have BESM 3rd edition in .pdf right now, and it looks like it would serve the game's needs. It even provides a magical girl template, although the final decision is always left up to the GM. You don't get many opportunities to RP a magical girl, so why not give it a go. I'd need to read up on what ever system you decide to use,but I'm more than willing to make the commitment.
>>1728829If I'll be able to join (TIMEZONES LOL), I'll make a roguish magical girl. More than a bit crazy, impulsive, self-centered in a cute way, prone to violence and overkill. In my use in terms like "henshin hero" I'm referring to characters such as Kamen Rider or Tekkaman Blade. Effectively, I'm giving a more over-the-top approach to male characters than what some might think of for Magic Knights. The other usages mentioned are correct, and transformation sequences might be mandatory. Ok, now that I finished typing and copy/pasting a sample stat block in Tri-Stat dX, I can handle some of the replies from the meantime. >>1728852I have BESM 3rd, but am currently leaning more toward Tri-Stat dX, which is more of BESM 2nd in the way it plays (from what I hear). If we do use BESM 3rd, I'd rather players avoid the templates and the like and build their characters from scratch. It might take longer that way, but it makes the cast more diverse. >>1728896I live in US Central Time, which is GMT-5 hours at the moment. Once I have a set of players and ways to contact them all, I'll work out scheduling to fit time zones. As for my roll call, as GM, I'll likely have no specific character, but would be running all the villains and random NPCs. Otherwise, as mentioned earlier: either a Tekkaman clone or a magical girl who specializes in mid- to close-ranged combat and acrobatic ways of getting around. She's gung-ho about her job and enjoys it.
>>1728990Yeah, GURPS has Appearance and Voice Advantages. I lol'd when I read the Ein Arris adventure, as everyone has Appearance of at least one, as well as Voice. Handsome, sexy motherfuckers with the vocal cords of angels.
>>1728971Well, wooden stakes in general, really. Possibly even wooden weapons. The character isn't exactly balanced for anything, although she does still have some character points floating around. It's an example stat block, though. I forgot to mention, but she started with 40 skill points. And skills are costed at different values, so more useful or important skills tend to cost a character more skill points. >>1728990...Generic anime cuteness and all that, yeah. Chances are, any advantages or random things everyone would be assumed to have, they'd get for free. Alternatively, if you spend points to be cute, you're even cuter than normal.

>>1729039Not actually that surprised.

>>1729032Meh, Magic+Girls is really about as much as the thing gets. There's the hiding of the secret identity, but they usually don't even use masks or anything. And there's cheap shoujo love.
>>1729029Eastern is one hour ahead of Central.
>>1729072Grand. Probably going to start cooking something up in a moment. Any suggestions for a good place to start (BESM 3rd right?)
>>1729072Nanoha completely ignored that ridiculous "You can't tell who I am even though my face is completely visible and I'm just wearing a different costume" thing thank god. Also, the primary love interest was The Lancer. Yes. This show is obviously targeted at young, impressionable Japanese schoolgirls. Certainly.
It may be because i'm jumping between FES and this thread, but would you allow a summoner character in the game? To be honest, I'm at a loss for character concepts at the moment. I'm not all that familiar with BESM, so I'm not all that sure how far the system will stretch when creating something.
>>1729004As it stands I won't be able to start the game this weekend, I'll make a temp hotmail account if you want.
>>1729097Did I mention there's a lot of subtextual (barely) lesbianism in this show? Because there is.A lot.
>>1729072And even that will be odd in my game. Unless the character's Magical Girl (or Guy) outfit includes a mask or otherwise obscures their identity by changes of hair color, etc, people can recognize them just as easily as if they're in their civilian persona. I'd have some focus on non-magical activities unless you players decide you'd rather kick more monster or villain ass. As for GMPCs, I'd probably make them no different than anyone else's characters. A friend did this once in W:tA and his character was quite entertaining. If anything, I'd use a GMPC as someone who can be kidnapped, tentacle raped, or otherwise completely screwed over when necessary and I think none of the players would appreciate the extra attention.

>>1729113>I'd use a GMPC as someone who can be kidnapped, tentacle raped, or otherwise completely screwed over when necessary and I think none of the players would appreciate the extra attention.-I'd- appreciate the extra attention...Also, I feel like Drawfagging my character.
>>1728739so we have around 100 to 200 points, which guideline are we using form the book for skills?
>>1729129becoming an adult fate-chan or something
Moar delicious Vivio-chan.
sure is nanoha imagedump around here
>>1729084Currently, it's Tri-Stat dX, but BESM 3rd is similar (although point costs are vastly different) so you could use that to get a basic idea. I linked the rules and a character creator early on in the thread.>>1729100I don't see a problem with summoners. It can be done in the system we're using, although rather than summon creatures, you might be better off doing things like in Persona and theming specific attacks/abilities as those from summoned creatures rather than your character. >>1729101You can. I posted with my e-mail a few times earlier in this thread, and could post it or an AIM name if people need to contact me to set things up. I'll need some way to get in touch with all the potential players, that's for sure. >>1729141Well, if you want me to do horrid (and possibly erotic) things to your character, just ask and we can plan it out. As for drawing your characters I do it all the time. visual aids are always nice. I think the system we're using even lets me hand out a few bonus character points for artwork, background information, and so-on. >>1729144Probably, for the time-being, modern day multi-genre. Although some of the others, like modern fantasy or occult/horror might work better.
>>1729214This is quickly devolving into porn.
RPG about magical lolis, Nanoha universe involved, GM is discussing the possibility of tentacle rapings and I posted Ohtado doujins....FUCK YES! YOU ARE THE BEST GAME EVCLANG
caro is sort of like a summoner
>>1729238Caro is a horny little loli harem-builder with a pet Solo Wing Dragon and the GOD OF DARKNESS.
you know this program is coming in handy
this would be awesome if I could only forget that everyone in it was an adult male pretending to be a gay little girl
>>1729238Summoners in Nanoha seem more like teleportation specialists than anything.Somehow, that makes it a lot more badass.
>>1729263one is pretending to be a shota
>>1729214>I think the system we're using even lets me hand out a few bonus character points for artwork, background information, and so-on.10,000+ hours in MSpaper, how many character points do I get?
>>1729263<- Imagine it's more like this.
>>1729274Depends on the die size the game uses, if we don't change systems at the last minute. So, probably 3-5 or so. Also, you get an "A" for effort. >>1729263As the GM, I can state that any characters I run are likely to be in their mid to late teens or older. ...which might incidentally make them mentor-types by sheer virtue of age, depending on how the PCs turn out.
>>1729252What is this?
>>1729214sounds great.I'll read through the rules tomorrow and hopefully send you a character sheet. I'm in the central time zone, and this will be my first run at playing a web RPG. I don't have a summer job yet, so it shouldn't be a problem with finding times that work.
So, I had a fun idea, if you're still taking a character. Basically, I'd be using something similar to 7th Sea's Glamor Magic, except without the whole basis in legend stuff. Character would be some kind of ditzy prankstress.Am I retarded y/n?
>>1729311How about this one? Also, can I be fourteen?
>>1729332Alright. Same time zone, so there's no problems there. I'll be starting a summer job at some point, so I'm trying to plan the games for weekends, at the moment. >>1729274I only just thought of it, so I'm posting an image that could be similar enough to your concept to work. If anyone needs to contact me, I'm back to posting with my e-mail.
>>1729353A one-eyed, androphobic magical girl?
>>1728031Ok ok so is this go? how do we contact the guy? I so want in this
>>1729381he has his email posted.
>>1729344Given the system we're using, no idea is too stupid, unless it's too hard to make with limited character points. I'm actually not sure how many players are confirmed or anything. But, e-mail me if you're interested. Because this is my first time GMing anything, I think I'll keep the group small, to around 4-5 players. If more show interest, that's fine, as some might end up with time-zone conflicts they can't get around or otherwise be unable to play.
>>1729367Pretty much. Though she's also chained up and being beaten by her older sister. There's another one there as well, but I didn't like it because it was a side view. And she was just fingering herself and not being beaten.>>1729366Also, I was going for Saber. I drew a decent picture of her that I fucked up by colouring, but it's on my PSP, which is dead and has a smashed screen, so blah. How many points for this? Though she's far two happy. Needs more Naivity and scared.
so who gets to be the completely forgettable male character with less than 3 minutes of screen time over 13 episodes?
I just have to say this, FUCK AIM. I have spent the last 20 minutes trying to make a phony account for it and it won't go through. just get to me at email@example.com
>>1729400I'm EST, and I'm in as long as it doesn't conflict with my irl group.
I'm honestly not sure if I could play on the weekends, but I am interested in the idea and would like to learn TriStat.Central time and currently jobless, so free time isn't too much of an issue otherwise.I'm in LittleSisterSeiba's GURPS game on Friday nights it seems. Call it 4-5pm till late at night.Saturday I'm likely to be out with friends until, oh, say 8-9pm.Sunday is church till noon, then back for more church at 6pm. Some time, namely 1-5pm, but not much maybe.Wednesday night 7-8pm is some more church. Then again, I have no particular idea of a character to make, so ehh. Perhaps the loli bruiser or nurse. If nothing else, I may show up to lurk on occasion.
>>1729424>>1729430irl group? Church?HERESY!
>>1729454Don't worry. We don't think your edible.
>>1729462I am amused.
>>1729411Well, I was being completely honest before on the point values. Players can gain a few bonus points for each of the following: background history, a character story, or a character drawing. I'll be awarding from 1/2 to 1 times the die-size used for each thing in bonus character points, so it'd be 4-8 or 5-10, depending on which die size category gets chosen. The current character point range puts characters more or less in the upper "posthuman" regime (d8) if they're closer to 100 points, or the "superhuman" regime (d10) otherwise. I never did decide on a set point total, and therefore can't give a straight answer on this. So, I guess I'll say it's a superhuman level game with characters at 150 points. They get 40 skill points. I might be nice and fudge thing down a bit and use d8s instead, depending on where most major characters are on the point scale. >>1729430Well, I can let you know about when the game's happening, and I've already been asked by another person to somehow provide logs or summaries for those who might be interested in what goes on but not in playing. >>1729423I haven't seen how their sign-up process is like these days. I'll send you an e-mail in a bit.
>>1729482Vivio with hair dye, or biological daughter?
>>1729516I was thinking there'd be more depending on the quality (or QUALITY) of the picture.
For that "not quite anime" feel, provided you can stand reading about tweens, read the webcomic Angel Moxie. Three girls, one demon prince, add servants, self doubt, and personal growth. It's a finished comic, so you don't have to wait to see how it ends.
>>1729552I was being hypothetical. What WOULD it look like if they actually had a daughter? Surely Midchilda has that kind of tech?
>>1729573sure its called that, cause I can't locate it on my usual scanlator list.
>>1729617No, it's an online webcomic. Pretty decent, as fellow Anon said. Made in English (as far as I know).
Here we go, a link.http://www.venisproductions.com/angelmoxie/index.php
>>1729575ah..She would look like delicious jailbait.
Man, I'm running out of things to say that are relevant to planning the game. I've tossed out e-mails to those who've contacted me or otherwise seemed interested who I could contact. I'll start planning stages sometime soon. For now, I go to eat some dinner and I'll keep watch on this thread for further questions or discussion. Anyone have any ideas for what they'd want to see in the setting, enemies, or the like? All that's wide open.
>>1729683at the moment no, I sent you an email so we can start from there till I can get the damned AIM screen name.
>>1729225You mean EVOLVED.
I'm most definitely interested in this game. I'll be e-mailing you later this evening, as I have a DnD game to get to atm.
>>1729683I'd like to see an anachronistic setting. Clocks and taverns, swords and motorcycles. Flintlocks and laser rifles. Just a whole bunch of weird shit. Also, I really am going to draw a picture. Maybe.
>>1729790I'm back from dinner. This could work relatively well. Maybe do some sort of semi-retro 1920s feel where things like rapiers and other medieval concepts never went out of style, and modern-day technology is still around, but might be based on magic, or have a different, more stylistic look and feel. As for the picture, go for it. I'm an artist myself, so I'll likely draw stuff for the game at some point, if no one else does.
>>1729869WTF is that a combination of?
>>1729842Yeah, but I haven't drawn anything in a good long time.Oh well, gotta start somewhere. I would use this, but she's far too old...
>>1729880My ass and your cock.
>>1729889Well, I'm going to sleep now, so I'll leave you all with this. It's from an Exalted Sourcebook you know.
I'm interested, though I'm slightly late (ok very late) and I'm in the PST timezone.I could try my hand with a Henshin Hero though...
>>1730023Well, you can still e-mail me and join the pool of potential players/those interested in the game. The time zone difference might make arrangements difficult, but I plan on waiting until I get anyone who's interested, and start planning a time that everyone can agree upon from there. Knowing my general work schedule would help, as well. I imagine it'll be quite flexible as long as I get my overall goals done, though.
>>1730023Your ride is a highly advanced artifact able to channel subrealities. It's main function is to procure mythical weapons for you to use. The weapons themselves backlash at you since they shouldn't exist in a stable form, and if you discover and ask for a weapon too powerful, you might not even be able to wield it.Your motorcycle can spit hateful Gae Bolgs and Caladbolgs.
>>1729252What program is that, anyhow? It looks... interesting.
>>1730375King of Heroes, do you have enough swords?
>>1729638I just read through most of that comic, and it's pretty much 60% EarthBound, 30% Generic Fantasy, and 10% Weeaboo.Awesome.
>>1730405Nevada and Amputee-tan?
So /tg/, since we've got this thread here and nothing to do until we grind out the details with our GM, how about we toss around some character ideas? Assuming you don't just want to play a carbon copy of a Nanoha character or something?I'd start... but I really don't have an inspiration right now for some reason.
>>1730892I actually had an idea for a character for something like this... I dunno if I'd be able to do it properly online like this, though. The idea's for a boy with a hat that basically has the previous several wearers inside it (Willingly). It gives him some powers on its own, but letting them come out and take over is much more powerful....Probably been done before, actually, or something close. Eh, I have other ideas too, and like I said, probably won't be able to actually join.
>>1730870Quite so. One of the best bits of art to come out of that whole thing.
