Ah, were to start? I've created three Old Gods, eight major races, three magical races, and about a century of history. I've got three Magic systems, two of which intertwine so well that if I had known how many things I'd end up with when I started I would have thought someone was pulling my leg.

I made elves only one race. larger, more teeth, and more BARBARISM. No dancing under the moonlight, rape and pillage, no haughty noble culture, KILL and Maim.

Gnomes are diminutive beings of great magical power and mystical knowledge. (6'' tall)

Alright, Elves first. In Middengard there are only three real races, The Elves, The Orcs, and the Dwarves. The Elves are then broken down into the Trow, who are the sort of Troll/Wood Elves, and the Alvain, who are the magic powered highish elves. There really should be a third set of Elves, considering the other races have three subcatagories, but I can't think of anything.

The Trow are big and Viking like, they tell stories and drink a lot, and enjoy a good night at the pub, as well as a good fight. They aren't however crazy berserkers. They don't go about beating up people, they just like a good war. Of course, that's on a cultural level. Unlike DnD there's no alignment-locked races.
The Trow are about seven and a half feet tall, and have mottled brown skin. They have big noses and long ears, like the elves in Lodoss War and other Japanese things.

The Alvain are smaller, a few inches shorter than most humans. They love learning and spend a lot of time reading and inventing. I guess if I looked at it objectively they're more like gnomes. They have MagiTek, and in some ways they're also like the Japanese of the world, churning out crazy futuristic technology. They've got laser rifles that use magic stored in a crystal as energy, and they also put on plays enhanced by magic. Copies of the plays can be bought and viewed at home. In a way, they have DVDs but no TVs.

I should probably explain Magic in depth, but I'll do that when I get out of class in an hour. Basically though, it's a separate circulatory system that pumps a blue liquid called Numina instead of Blood. Basically, you need mana to do magic, and the Mana comes from the Numina.

Of course, there's more than one way to shoot a fireball...

I like the Trow. Vikinglike races appeal to me.
The futuristic technology's a good staple of any world, and the whole recorded performances thing in particular sounds like the kind of thing that needs to be handled just right in the game world or it'll come off as seeming incredibly forced or anachronistic. Still, if done right, it could be bizarrely entertaining.

I introduced a nomadic clan of bauriars to my game once. They were not an immediately humanoid race to my players who viewed them from afar. Clearly, the players thought, they are malevolent beings, ready to pounce upon us the moment we're discovered.

So the group spent two extra days of traveling by trying to sneak around the clan, and had someone on watch at all times, watching the bauriars effectively graze in a meadow.

That probably belongs in the previous thread, but it ties into how racially diverse I try to make my game world.

Well, the Old Gods, or Titans, are based on the three things from the Bible or whatever: Bahamut, Leviathan, and Ziz. They fell to the world and created three giant craters way back before the main Goddess, Elyon, woke up and sang life into the world.

Bahamut sleeps between Genievee and Ha~Sara, and he was sealed there by the Rat God, who still has no name. Bahamut's true form thing is that of a giant Behemoth, which are a bunch of things that are sort of like Elephants crossed with Triceratops. Dino in back, elephant in front, minus the trunk. They're said to be his children, and they also refrain from stepping on mice.

Leviathan is the God of the Lung, which are the giant Chinese dragon type things. Lao Shen Lung from Monster Hunter is a good example of what I was aiming for. In fact, Monster Hunter is a great inspiration for fauna. Leviathan sleeps in the Crater between the islands of Madakatsukoro. Actually, Madakatsukoro wasn't so much an island before Leviathan fell, it was a continent. Leviathan may be a Goddess.

The last God is Ziz. Lord of Wyvern, which again are like the Monster Hunter Wyvern. They're big bird like reptiles that shoot fire and things. They're a common source of Mana since they have Numina systems. Smaller ones are kept as pets.

this is a map of north america in my 'nova europa' GURPS campaign. The majority of the world is TL7 and regular mana. Hollywood is run by the tycoons turned aristocratic government, is TL8 but has proportionally less magic users. The Sioux are the unified native american peoples(who were never as tribal and insular in my world. thanks to magic they were bronze aged motherfuckers with better magic than the colonists therefore they fought off the invasion of their lands)

the wastes are whats left of the united states(the unified colonies of europe) after the Germanian nuclear test run of 1918. most of the coast tectonically shifted below the waves, making the island of florida and the Great lake.

Canada is basically the same, a little smaller, more unified. And Louisianna is cajun and full of fighter pilots and bayou pirates.

    >>1635331

If I recall, the Sioux only came to exist as a defense against the white man. It's just a word meaning enemy and a group of tribes that threw in with each other to try to survive.

If you were going for a pre-colonization unified Amerindian culture, maybe the Iroquois would be more appropriate? At least, I'm trying to remember how old the Iroquois league or whatever was...

I can just picture the whole 'willing sacrifice' argument being a skit by Lee & Herring.
TV's Richard Herring: ...the woman in question was being willingly sacrificed. It was considered the highest honor possible in their faith.

    Ahhh!

TV's Stuart Lee: No, not 'ahhh'.

TVRH: Ahhh, Stu, but it was. Ahh, you see?

TVSL: No I don't see. Look, Rich, you're saying that it's reasonable for the players to use deadly force when faced with a man who kidnaps a

woman and kills her for the glory of his dark gods, but not against someone who talks her into it through the use of lies and indoctrination

    since infancy?

TVRH: Ahhh, no, Stu, you see it was their culture, ahhhh!

TVSL: That's just a fancy way of saying she didn't know any better, isn't it, Rich?

TVRH: No, no, anyway it isn't a lie, ahhh! It's all absolutely true!

TVSL: You mean their god, right, actually demands that they sacrifice virgins? Seems like they could have been a bit more circumspect in their

choice of religion in the first place, shouldn't they?

TVRH: No Stu, that's not fair, he's a really good god. He does all sorts of good things like... curing sick puppies, and stuff like that.
    >> Anonymous 04/30/08(Wed)15:00 No.1635652
TVSL: If he's so good why does he want to eat virgins?

TVRH: He can't help it, Stu! He can't help it, he's got to eat the blood of virgins or he'll die!

TVSL: He's not much of a god then, is he? More a sort of low-rent vampire, who has to go begging off the church instead of just biting people at

    night.

TVRH: It's prejudice, Stu. You're prejudiced against people who need the blood of virgins to live.

TVSL: That's ridiculous, I don't know anyone who needs the blood of virgins to live.

TVRH: I do, Stu, I need the blood of virgins to live! MMMMM sweet sweet virgin blood!

TVSL: So you subsist upon the blood of virgins do you, Richard?

    TVRH: Yes! Well... Virgin.

TVSL: And by that I presume you mean your own blood.

    TVRH: *mumbles*

TVSL: Sorry Rich, I didn't quite hear that.

TVRH: YES, OKAY? It's my own blood. I need my own blood to live.

TVSL: So that would be you, being a virgin, needing your own blood, that of a virgin, to live, right?

Alright, I already mentioned this in my "Play GURPS with me, pretty please" thread:

The Urkai have done one of those "Wow, how did I think of that" Magic things. They have people called Spellswords who are basically mages trained as soldiers. They carve their swords with runes and forge the metal with mana traced alloys. They then use the mana to imbue their weapons with elemental attributes like lightning and fire and such.

They're also known colloquially as Glassers, due to that being what happens when you expose desert sand to fire. Glassers are often employed as palace guards, and can be seen outside important places in Ha~Sara.

There's a sort of Jedi thing to them in that they have such an iconic weapon.

A giant isopod is the sea god. And we're talking about a GIANT one. Ancient, too, its shell carved with symbols from times gone before the men created iron. From time to time, for untold reasons, it rises to consume and lay waste before returning to the cold, dark depths. Only to rise again when the time is right.

    To revive a thread.

    World building:
Essentially, I have only two races. Firstly there are men who were made by God, moulded from dirt and ensouled with "Spiritus Dei," the breath of God. Men are half bestial, half spiritual and stand as testament to Heaven’s omnificent nature. Men are frail and quick to fall back into the dust whence they came but driven by an omniscient father, they are quick to master and control a physical place in which Heaven cannot directly intervene.
Secondly there are the Dwarfs. Children of the Phenomenon; the empirical world of natural order that, through no conscious contrivance, has born children who are the true inheritors. Living for hundreds of years a Dwarf will, at first, be a runtish figure – living together in great groups, tilling the soil and living for the physical. They will then grow to the height of a man and then taller still, moving away from their groups and wandering alone to contemplate their existences. Harsh and telling wars with Men often cut down a Dwarf before his prime, but, if left alone to think, one will become the size of a mountain; waiting in still solitude for the time when God and his Host assemble to seize creation – then, with a full understanding of what they do, they will rise as Titans and strike against the Father and his feeble men.

I just feel like keeping this thread alive for other people to post their awesome things. Lets see, I've done the Elves, I've done the Glassers... I think I've talked about how the Male Risar are like princesses and the Female Risar are like Amazons.

Actually, you know what I'll do? I've got a question. The Risar and the Urkai (And the Kobali, but I don't like to talk about them) all have horns on their heads. What horns would look best? Originally they were any kind of horn like protrusion, ranging from ram horns, unicorn horns, and antlers.
Then they were sort of, "on the temple" things that were kind of like ears. And sort of Elfen Lied Diclonius things.
But now they're just tiny little spikey bumps on their foreheads.
Should they stay that way or be different? Should Urkai and Risar have different types of horns?

Due to GODDAMN TIME TRAVEL, I'm still trying to map out the empires of my world. However, the geology remains the same in all but one. The western area is dominated by forests and plains, while the north is full of mountainous reaches with a crater-like circular area of open space, which is dominated by a huge black city of Devils in the "Near Future" part. The east is mostly coastline, with some human forts along them, and some island chains where the Goblinoid pirates live. The south is basically farmlands, hills and dales, Newbville.

In the Near Past, humans are only a moderately powerful force, and the mountains are utterly uninhabited. In the Present, Humans are now in a few seperate kingdoms, and goblinoids are raiding them. This is where it gets weird. Unless you really want to know, I can sum it up that via time travel shenanigans, theres both a Cataclysmic Future and a Near Future (Mid-high and epic level, respectively.)

Cataclysmic: Desert. Lots and lots of it, with a fuck-all crater in the middle constantly covered in sandstorms.
Near: Devils have taken a foothold in the mountains, and relics created by the magical backlash of the prevention of the Cataclysm are causing massive instability in human empires. Some suspect the two events are related. Also, a continent that is (so far) mostly populated by sentient psionic crystals is discovered across the ocean.

    >>1636782

Interesting way of interpreting the mythological difference between men and dwarves (who spawned from Ymir's flesh like maggots). So humans are the result of an idea instead of a thing (a celestial emanation of god inside of an animal body)...what makes them different from animals is a noumenon, something only a fellow human (or presumably other sentient being) could observe. Whereas dwarves are as you say children of phenomenon...

If phenomenon is how a thing is percieved, and noumenon is the thing itself...

That makes dwarves elemental in a way, they are effect, a natural phenomenon, the appearance of something at work...they represent something, whereas humans just are something.

Humans have a greater truth to themselves, whereas dwarves embody a greater truth outside of themselves.

The universe is symbolic of a man, a dwarve is symbolic of the universe.

Found an old short annotated version describing the main races in generalities. I'll give a longer blurb about them in a minute, if I can find it.
I tried to avoid simply re-making elves, dwarves, etc., and there's a complicated morality and societal structure behind each race which is never simply black and white.
Still, a lot of the cultural dynamics are in many ways comparable to real-world counterparts: Dwerms would be at home with early-American Irish and Chinese, Olympians hold many of the same societal institutions as the ancient Greeks, and Antaure are in many ways an amalgam of medieval Japanese, American southwestern Indian, Norse, Romanian Gypsy, and pre-Ottoman Turkish.

Here's another race chart from way back when these guys were created.

They've each got a racial history and a mythological creation legend to go with it:

The Antaure were created by the Gods of Mischief and Madness, completely by accident. As a result, they've never had anything given to them, and had to struggle to survive. They're notorious as brigands and thieves, but have a fierce sense of loyalty and determination, and will do whatever it takes to survive as a whole.
The Yaga were tested as a race when the very first Yaga completed a rite of passage designed by the gods themselves, a physical test of endurance, dexterity, and power that would determine whether or not the race would be allowed to exist. As a result, Yaga were once focused on strength and physical prowess, but many claim they have forgotten their way and have become a society more focused on social, emotional, and philosophical interaction -- life-loving bohemians who look down on their old ways as somewhat barbaric.
The Dev were born from the goddess of nature, and as such hold her in the highest reverence. They have a deep respect for the natural world and are closely bound to its workings. They are highly spiritual warriors, druids, shamans and hunters who live off the land and worship its wonders.
Olympians were spawned Perogra, from one of the three Fallen Gods -- children of the creation god who turned away from Him and were thereafter cast down. They live primarily around and across the gargantuan mountain Mons, the peak of which is said to hold Perogra herself. They follow her teachings of intellectual challenge and devote themselves as scientists, alchemists, philosophers, and writers. They have some of the foremost technology in the world, and defend their God's fall from grace as unjust, claiming her only sin was the pursuit of knowledge.

Throtts were not created by a god, but are said to have spawned from the murky waters of The Underdrop itself -- a vast system of hollows, caverns, and tunnels which twists uncountable miles below the surface of the world. They are vicious and violent, delighting in the simple pleasures of violence and eschewing morality and charity as foolish and dangerous artificial values. They have since taken a surrogate leader in Arkos, another Fallen God, who was struck down for plotting against his creator.
Dwerms were created by Arkos when he was still in full power, but eventually forsook him when he planned against the god of creation and tried to lead them as an army against Him. Legend holds that they are responsible for the majority of The Underdrop's creation, carving out tunnels and caves in which to build cities, mines, and workshops. They are looked down on by other races as base, but they hold a strong sense of brotherhood and never betray a friend.
Legend holds that Lomites were once a singular, almost godlike being, the Loei. But as other gods became jealous of its power and fearful that it may one day usurp the heavens, it was struck by divine force and split into thousands of pieces. Lomites are viewed by many as suspicious, unintelligent, and untrustworthy, but their philosophies hold love as the single greatest achievement man can attain -- a desire to 'reunite' a whole, perhaps.
Petrods were created by the gods as a countermeasure against a veritable army of monstrous beings, and their victory permitted them to exist and flourish as a race. They worship the human form and the power of the individual, believing things like philosophy and science only bring man further away from harmony with nature and draw him into a world of the abnormal and abhorrent, and that the way to true greatness is through the struggle for individual perfection.

The Id were created by the third Fallen God, Barrude, whose sin was hedonism, abusing and overindulging in the physical pleasures of the world, devouring it while giving nothing in return. They're an incredibly simple people who are surprisingly physically formidable despite a very underdeveloped mind. Some Id are said to have strange mental powers despite their apparent idiocy. They band together in clans and take a simple philosophy of survival.
Pereki are said to be the manifested forms of lost spirits, having been manifested suddenly and spontaneously into existence on their own. Lost and alone, most Pereki inevitably embrace their lack of bonds to the world and set across the lands as adventurers, hunters, and explorers. In the old days, a great nomadic band of Pereki are said to have come across the Fallen God Barrude, and in a world in which they found themselves alone and lost, Barrude's apparent love of life gave them guidance as a race.
The Asoga were created by the god of Creation himself, highly telling of their current status as the most respected and admired race in the world. They are holy warriors, esteemed scholars, and men of faith. Many Asoga study weapon tactics alongside theology, and hold themselves as a sort of moral compass for the world, committed to rooting out evil and corruption in whatever forms it may take.
The Kropians are easily the most mysterious and misunderstood of the races, highly secretive and suspicious of the other races of the world. They develop bizarre technology superior to even the Olympians and will protect their racial secrets to the death. Legends hold they have existed as long as the world itself, and in ways are suspected to be the workers who maintain existence itself behind the scenes, the clockwork keepers of the ticking hands of reality.

It appears that, instead of making one or two races who's hearts all the gods fight over, each god in your world just whipped up his own (perhaps 2-dimensional) race in his/her own image.

When you present them all together like this, they have an interesting sort of tribal feel; I see each god standing with all his little red/black/blue/green critters at his feet, and then the tribes with no god (or those spawned by fallen gods) keeping their backs to the wall and just trying to survive.

It's actually because the blurbs were written in terms of a campaign, focusing on the racial template in relation to their functional adventuring skills. Basically it was an attempt to give players an idea of what race they might want to lean towards depending on what kind of character they wanted to play.
So it reads like adventuring archetypes largely because it's intended to give you an idea of which one is best suited to which.

That's great to hear, because that's pretty much exactly what I'm going for.

I really should have mentioned that the world these races all live in is pre-medieval fantasy -- no castles or large governments even exist yet. The world is fairly young, the only real governments are small clans and villages with shamans, priests, chieftans and elders... hell, crossbows don't even exist yet. Think early-mid Bronze Age or even prior.

Everything is mostly comprised of interacting but separate communities -- it IS a tribal world.

I set up a world with 4 major groups inhabiting the main continent, the kingdom of "Man" ruled by human and having Halflings, and Orges; The Beast kingdom, ruled by Gnolls and housing Kobolds and Kenku; The Desert raiders, which were Lizardmen decended from dinosaurs (so they resembled dinosaurs) ruled by Dracotaurs, and the Kreen Emipre, made up of 2 castes of a Thri'kreen variation.

The Kobolds pioneered the art of firearms in the world, and fashioned rifles and pistols to make up for their physical shortcomings. The Kenku were the Beast Kingdom's spies and assassins.

The Lizardfolk in the desert were essentially land pirates that worshipped dragons (which were a rarity in this setting), which is why they were ruled by the Dracotaur.

Thri'kreen in this setting I had changed to an aquatic race, living on the shores and in ancient ruins under the water from a civilization formerly populated by elementals. They were primarily a mercantile race. The Thri'kreen were changed to being Lobster-like in appearance rather than Praying Mantis like, making up the worker caste, and Water Striders making up the Merchant caste.

Dwarves are not strictly mountain dwellers. While they do specialize in weapons and armor, they are also well known for a number of other crafts, ranging from pottery to construction. Dwarves travel in massive caravans of sturdy wagons, blazing well-established trails in the name of profit. Dwarven trade routes include stops at large cities, sites for gathering resources, and Waforges, which range from a simple blacksmith's workshop with a magical Dwarven lock, to small towns that welcome all artisan travelers. Dwarven products are always sturdy and well made. Dwarves take so much pride in many of their products, that they often attempt to prove the superior quality of their goods by offering free magical or mundane repairs.
Eventually, successful caravans will grow too large to continue as one entity, and will either split into two or more smaller caravans, or occasionally set up a permanent shop in a city.

I have a strange fetish for bastard kobolds.

Imagine a first-level party just tangles with and beats down its first kobold scout party (maybe a ranger, a sorceror or two, and a couple mooks). They're tired, but they won, and after sorthing through their loot (a masterwork weapon and a scroll or two) they're feeling pretty god about themselves.

But as they keep moving, they hear an omnipresent shuffling sound, like a migration of small animals, and as they top a rise they see it: kobold armies swarming out of cavernous holes in the ground far below, looking like ants from so far away, hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of yappy little spear-wielding, magic missile casting bastards carpeting the ground in streams and rivlets in all directions.

I'm also a big fan of gangs of 8-20 first-level kobold sorcerers with cross-class ranks in Hide, all spamming Magic Missile from dense cover against mid-level parties.

Very rarely, if a human kicks enough ass in life, the gods, fates, angels, devils, or whatever you believe in will offer to make him a deal, in accordance with a pact older than this world. Once upon a time, when aiming to win great warriors to his cause, some god of chaos and strife approached a few humans and said: "Okay, look, I'm not going to offer you peace after the storm, because I know you don't want that. Suppose I offered you the opposite; that your blade would never dull, that your praise would always be sung, that you could fight as you do now until the end of days and beyond. Would that be awesome or what?"
And so, with occassional additions to their ranks, they have.

The race of valk (plural "valks" or "alvalk"(all valk); it is incorrect to refer to them as a collective) look like humans, with dusky skin and sharp red eyes. Or eyes blue as thunder and skin pale as the moon. Or flesh covered in rune-like 'birthmarks' and enormous anime hair. There are only a handfull of consistancies, let me go over them:

-They all have some bladed weapon made of crystaline bone in place of their right or left hand. It heals if sundered.
-They're all physically gorgeous, in some sense or another
-They all kick ass (that is, they all have hero stats; there are no mook valk)
    -They're all fucking crazy.

Essentially, the soul of the dead valk (or dead human, if this is his first incarnation as a valk) gets to pick what his body will look like, down to the last detail; that's part of the deal.

And while he won't keep any of his old memories on reincarnation, he will retain the same basic spirit. Valk don't come back to fulfill some higher purpose or finish something started in life. They come back because they prefer the real world- blood sweat tears and steel- to heaven.

    They just want to fight.

I started churning out stuff for another one of those /tg/ projects that never get off of the ground. Its going to serve as the basis for my next world after I wrap up the campaign I'm in. No idea how long that will take, but it gives me plenty of time to fine-tune the whole thing.

Low-magic and low-tech. I tried to make the core races seem more than just funny looking humans. It ended up with me having almost monkey-like elves and badger-like dwarves. Also got rid of halflings and gnomes and replaced them with goblins. And according to /tg/ I horribly mangled illithids.

I reduced most monsters to only animal intelligence and did away with wizard, sorcerer, warlock, cleric and druid classes. Only in spirit though. Anybody will be able to perform magic from all of its various sources as long as you meet the requirements and are intelligent/forceful enough to pull it off. Requirements usually something like placing the skull of a freshly slaughtered goat on the remains of your cremated grandfather, than pour milk and honey over your head while ringing a brass bell. That sort of weird ritual stuff.

Magic comes in four flavors. Celestial, Infernal, Fey and Eldritch. Celestial from the gods after performing acts of faith, Infernal from the Pit after debasing yourself or others for amusement, Fey from the naturally magical creatures of the world after presenting offerings, and Eldritch from nobody knows where after pulling that crazy shit like that goat skull thing.

I'm aiming for combat to be fast and dangerous, magic to be as powerful and important as it should be, and the monsters and the beast races being opponents to your species very survival.

That's a really broad question -- I have no idea where to begin. I guess I'll just throw out some random fun facts.

Throtts, the 9-foot-tall cave-dwelling monstrous snakelike barbarians, are hermaphromorphic, able to change gender at will between male, female, and neuter. There is no sex discrimination in their society whatsoever. They are also highly protective of their children, and despite what is otherwise a mostly barbaric nature, seek to keep their children sheltered from the atrocities of the world until they've reached adulthood. They even assemble children's choirs. It's very strange to see something with such sanctity in an otherwise bloodthirsty society. Messing with or hurting children is an offense worthy of a brutal death, and the sentence for pedophilia is death by torture.

Male Yaga have duller, duskier skin tones and are generally shorter than females. Females have bright red and pink skin tones and sport backwards-pointing antennae, while males have forwards-pointing antennae.

Antaure (aka Highwaymen) are the only race to grow terminal hair (that is, hair on the head, armpits, etc. rather than vellus hair, which is the tiny transparent hair that grows all over the body). Their hair grows black and grayish, turning white with age and reaching a shock white or bright silver by adulthood. They wear their hair unkempt and long, never cutting it, and long, wild silver hair is one of the greatest marks of physical beauty for the antaure.

As an odd aside, Olympian males have no refractory period. That is, they have no "waiting period" between when they are capable of achieving sexual climax.

Legend holds that the God Lowdee died in the epic battle against the God of Destruction, alongside the God of Creation. After the battle the God of Creation built the world from Lowdee's body -- the world itself is the body of a dead god, the rivers and seas are his blood, and so on.
The traditional Dev mask is designed after the face of Lowdee, with small variations between types. The different types are indicators of standing and occupation within society, with major types used to differentiate warriors from hunters from farmers, and smaller details used to make individuals distinct. Devs wear their masks permanently -- they don't take them off even in the privacy of their own home. They're only ever shifted to eat or drink, and only ever completely removed during a ceremonial occurrence in which the mask and face are washed. Most of the world is in the dark as to what Devs look like beneath their masks.

Steal away. I'll throw up some stats, actually; they're pretty simple.

+2 charisma, -2 wisdom. Valk are beautiful, driven and captivating, but they're also more than a little crazy and sometimes lack a vital sense of perspective
+4 racial bonus to will saves against fear and compulsions. Valk may be short-sighted, but they're by no means weak willed.
Flawless swordsmanship: Reroll all natural "1"s on melee attack rolls (this power isn't recursive; if the reroll is a 1 you keep it).
One-handed: Valk suffer a -2 penalty to any skill check which normally requires two free hands (meaning they can swim/climb/pick locks with surprising agility, but still not as well as a human who does not have a freak'in sword for a hand). Valk treat either their left or right hand as their primary, whichever is convenient at the time.
Valk blade: Can be equivilent to any masterwork exotic melee slashing weapon, with the added benefit that it can't be sundered or disarmed (obviously).

I've written a long-assed racial entry, complete with customs, racial philosophies, relations etc, but it isn't on this computer.

I've been trying to think of a way to fit a system of teleportation into my friend's homebrew low magic world that is immensely accurate with a cripplingly high cost. I thought misusing the GM's already present parallel dimension full of indifferent demons (not the Warp, unless you annoy them these don't give a shit) by having a group of these demons strike a deal with a group of people for teleports wherever. Demons will transport one person wherever on (or off) the planet they want to go, in exchange for someone else's soul - they write the location and the trigger phrase on a knife in their blood, and stab it into the sacrifice for them to die and the stabber to get to his location.

Obviously impractical in everything but farflung empires full of dicks, as a courier would need three slaves per message, but funny in a "guess who robbed you, stabbed the prince you were protecting in the face, and is now living on a tropical island off your hard-earned gold?" way.

It would have a human shaped head and torso, but they'd both be proportionate for a Large creature (using a Large Monstrous Spider as a basis). Where the limbs go would be a human arm that had two elbows and the arm would split to form a second forearm below the second elbow. Smarter versions of this creature would wield weapons. The head would have a mask on it that sort of resembles the pic. It would cause despair (like a mummy) when first viewed.

The idea being that the mask is a magical item, it can be removed with a Remove Curse spell, but the affected does not retake their original form.

In earlier stages the mask wearers resemble zombies in their behaviour. However, if the zombies can grapple an opponent and make a bite attack for 3 turns, the target suddenly has a mask as well and acts like the zombies. At this stage the mask can be taken off with force (DC22) but the wearer then takes 3d6 damage and will have facial scars.

However the mask can bond with non-humanoids as well...

This is how the mask should look.

It takes 1 week for a person with the mask on to transform into the "spider." After 4 days the mask engulfs the entire body creating a cocoon that slowly grows. After 3 days the spider creature emerges. The cocoon has hardness 10 and 50hp. If broken within the first day in the cocoon the affected has one of the spider's features chosen at random (i.e. extra elbow joints, legs into arms, etc.). The second day, the affected has a 25% chance to be Large, and will have almost all the spider's features. The third day, 80% chance to come out as a fully formed spider, 20% chance to awaken as a medium sized version.

I'd imagine the CR for the spider to be 2 (it's really not that much different from a large monstrous spider) unless it wields weapons, then I would probably give it levels in a class and be CR2 + class.

The zombies would just be CR 1/2 (I think zombies are CR 1/3 normally).

The mask(s) just appear out of nowhere, or are found, possibly on a corpse. Perhaps there could be something like the mask "follows" a person. They keep seeing it in places. They can't break it without dispel magic, so they probably lock it up, or hide it, throw it away, etc. but it keeps coming back. Haunting them, staring (maybe causing Wis loss) until they finally put the mask on after going insane. They then start dragging people off, and putting more masks on them forcibly. Where THOSE masks come from is a mystery.

    More factoids:
Olympians, the educated birdlike philosopher-people of the mountains, are the primary practitioners of tattooing. Generally solid black, swirls around the chest, neck, back, and lower parts of the face. It's seen as a mark of elevation and beauty.
The Olympians also developed a rapid-communication network along the side of Mons, the gargantuan mountain. At set points circling the slopes of Mons, huge circular focal dishes have been built in such precise locations that they focus sound from one to the next. These pairs of dishes are so powerful that even miles away, one need only put their ear to the focal point of one dish while the other dish's focal point is spoken into -- the message will be heard as clear as day.

The Celbans, a small goblinlike sub-race, are world-renowned as settlers and adventurers, and their greatest endeavors have been the attempt to settle throughout the Splintered Coast, a huge sprawl of small islands off the coast of the Shattered Lands, said to have been formed when a great fallen star hit the plateau that once stood there and broke it into millions of pieces.
The Celbans also practice extreme body modification, generally for what they consider practical purposes: flaps of skin inside the mouth for holding water, thin metal bars along the fingers for precision detailing, even self-made 'pockets' carved into the skin.

The great Antaure poet-king Anon wrote thousands of poems throughout his life, during which he presided over Kapadoria, the largest Antaure city in the world. He wrote (and sometimes lost) so many countless poems that to this day, when a poem's author is unknown, it is always simply signed "Anon".

Fine, you've convinced me even though I really need to get to sleep. One of the recurring problems of mine is that I need to find some way to make human kingdoms memorable and fresh without simply mixing and mashing elements together. One of my preferred authors is Steven Erikson, who even though the Malazans are obviously Roman, can still be forgiven because he does it very well.

Well, in any case, here is the Kingdom in the North. Tear it apart /tg/. It was originally founded as a feudal monarchy in the crudest understanding of the term. The north, being harsh and usually, well, cold, needs a rigidly forced hierarchy just to maintain food supplies and soldiers for the armies. The armies are terribly important because the Kingdom shares the north with another race of men: the Urlorih. The Urlorih were an original family of men who became corrupted and evil, etc. etc.

You're probably drawing on common mythology.

But for most of us weeabo faggots, Bleach was the first time we saw a mask attach itself to a person, weave a cocoon around them, and turn them into a monster.

Anyway, little creepy bits like that aren't done often enough, and they really only require minimal mechanical backing. The mask seeming to 'follow' the PC is a cool idea.

The Great Father, Dust, who is the God of Chaos and the Creator of All Things, is basically the father of all gods, and everything in creation is spawned directly or indirectly from a stream of energy and matter which flows from his beard. All other gods were born from him, as well as numerous demigods and strange beings.

Dustmen represent the darkest side of Chaos, and they have been born throughout history from Dust. They are aberrations, twisted things and monstrous semi-human creatures bent on destruction and pure chaos. They have limited, generally bestial intelligence, but there have been rumors of intelligent dustmen -- a dangerous thing indeed. They vary wildly in size and shape, but they are all warped beings which seek to destroy everything and everyone around them.

    Cont'd

The constant wars, rigid hierarchy with implied caste system, and with the “soft” kingdoms to the south always watching, the North developed a reputation for pride and stubbornness. Eventually, though, the pride led to decadence, the stubbornness to stagnation, and the hierarchy to revolt. The North began to tear itself apart just as the Urlorih began a massive invasion in the east of the kingdom. They burned and slaughtered almost all the way across the kingdom until they sacked the Capitol and killed the king. When they did that, they took his crown with them back west. This crown was blessed with the touch of their patron God, and it is absolutely required to continue the lineage. With the crown gone, the royal line, and therefore the entire society, collapsed overnight. This feudal pyramid was irrevocably caped with the divine kingship, and could not be repaired. The Urlorih, though, did not stop, and continued West, approaching the border with the south kingdoms.

Finally, they reached the Regent of one of the last remaining provinces. Unlike some of the others, who had simply thrown down their weapons, or worse, and abandoned the north, resolved to stand and die, rather than leave. He gathered his wife, children, and about a thousand men to go and die nobly rather than live in shame. During the battle, though he killed countless Urlorih and committed countless acts of courage, he was wounded mortally, and finally died in the middle of the melee. Rather than be greeted by their patron god, however, the Regent was greeted by the God of death. He offered the Regent a choice.

The God of Death would save the Regent and the North, but he would do so for a price. Further, because he was a God and beyond doubt, he would not name his price. He only offered the Regent the choice because in going not to save his people and his land, but to die nobly, he pleased the God. The Regent accepted without question, and the God of Death resurrected him and all his retainers on the battlefield. They ruined the Urlorih, and began to press Eastward, with only the thousand men he had. They quickly pushed outward and eventually retook about half the old territory which included the old capital. There, the Regent was crowned King of a new reign in the North. Now, the God of Death appeared to the King and revealed his price. He would take the king’s life, now that there was some degree of peace, and allow his bloodline to rule. Because the King had chosen to die rather than avoid dishonour rather than to save his Lord and his people, he was doomed to never die.

He, and all his sons and the sons of the men who were raised with him, would eternally fight the war that the King could not finish, until they had finally defeated the Urlorih utterly. The King, though, did die in truth, and became the Twice Dead King. From that point on, about a century and a half before “modern day” in the setting, the people of the north have fought a constant battle against the barbarians. Sometimes pushing them back, sometimes losing ground, they constantly push towards the East.

The society, though, was fundamentally altered. Originally they worshipped the God of the Earth, and followed the mantra of “a place for everything, and everything in it’s place.” To the God of Death, there is no service BUT death, and all are free to serve. In some cases that means that you must die unnamed and unremembered, but sometimes that means you will never die, constantly rising again and again until you complete your task. This direct showcase of a God in everyday life has affected how the individual fits in society greatly.

Now, everyone was equal in the service that they could give, and a religious fanaticism grips the land. The people for the most part, eschew farming and building and throw themselves into battle. Some, so overcome with devotion to the God that returned their land, simply walk into the East, into Urlorih lands, simply to die, believing that dying is the greatest gift that they can give. Sometimes, they even come back, though never unchanged. For the most part, people don’t always follow the same level of belief. While everyone acknowledges that the God did directly intervene on their behalf, they doubt the level of devotion needed. This has created a schism in the administration of the North.

Also thought I should add in a little information about the map. The setting is a sort of post apocalypse (despite being steampunk). Some 1000 years ago most major cities and many minor ones were rocked with unexplainable explosions. The explosions were spheres of energy that expanded, then retracted and there'd be nothing left in the crater, except a giant tree. The trees are proportionally large to the crater and don't grow bigger. The explosions can be whatever the GM wants (personally I'm using temporal bombs, the blasts were the result of mutually assured destruction in some future war). Many of the craters are now inhabited, hence the crater cities. Also, the map is a rough regional map of southern Ontario, but the cataclysm caused the poles to reverse, so Lake Ontario is in the North (but dried up a bit, thus the Ever Marsh).

In theory, the King, from the new house of the Twice Dead King, rules absolutely. In practice, the Regents (Dukes, Counts, etc.) rule the provinces themselves, and the new Cult of the Death God holds immense sway among the population, especially among the lower classes. Those who see misery and death almost everyday are more likely to slip into fanaticism when they can see the tangible benefits of it. Almost every family now has a member who was touched by the God in some way. The Regents push for a kingdom much like the old way, while the Cult advocates a theocracy with the God in literal, as well as spiritual, charge of the land.

While for the most part, people don’t know why the God is allowing this war to continue, they only know that he does. This creates some suspicion in the people, but to the God it makes perfect sense. The bargain that he forced on the King was essentially trading the service of the people in exchange for their land. Eventually, once they defeat the Urlorih, they would be free of the bargain. Until they do, the God receives the service and fealty of many thousands of people in a manner that is pleasing to him. This god is not a god of war, but he takes delight in extreme service above all else.

The story of the Twice-Dead King is interesting, but I warn you that it isn't the stuff that a cool setting is made of. Be careful not to look at it as more than an interesting backdrop.

An aristocratic farming people waging perpetual war on barbarians in the name of a death-god IS the kind of thing that a good setting is made of and that's what you really want to focus on.

Hell, it would be easy to set the PCs as the savages and have this crazed nation of heirarchal death-cultists painted as the bad guys.

Sorry, sorry, sorry, shit, I should have clarified. I don't exactly intend this to be a setting for a game as is, I'm also tossing around the idea of it as a setting for a story. What I like is that you instantly saw how the people who are the "good side" can be seen as barbarians in their own way. Yay for doing something right!

Would actually help if I had my D&D stuff in an accessible area right now...

I made my own Hemisphere. Would love to share it, but I have yet to produce a finalized map of it, much less scan what I do have (yet). It all includes somewhat-detailed town & government information, local legends, plot potential and the like. I have three different campaigns currently going on in it, and am pleased with how well it's working out.

As for deities, I've made a Neutral-esque god (spelled something like Kor'ashi) for a smaller local culture (and a PC cleric). I've also put a bit more detail (love Deities & Demigods, btw) into the Lizardfolk deity, as they tend to be "friendlier" in my world.

Currently working on building a deity around the Final Fantasy Shiva (Have a feeling I'm going to want to murder that weeaboorific party if they keep it up).

As for a random shortfall of mine, I'm biased against dwarves.

These were the bad guys from the last campaign I ran in this world. They were all half-breeds: half-Bonemen, half something else. Rumor was they were spawned when a raiding party of Bonemen sacked a farming village, killing the men and raping the women.
The six half-breeds acted essentially like a small and powerful group of bandits, well feared in their area like a tiny mafia. Even city guards wouldn't touch them. They appeared to be the villains.
The players worked alongside an adventurer-turned-general who led the Hoplites, a group of soldiers and militiamen spread throughout the Underdrop as a kind of guard for hire, standing in for city protection when there was none. They weren't particularly polite and signs of corruption were prevalent among the Hoplites.
It eventually turned out that the rumor was half-true: the half-breeds were created when a group of champion adventurers of various races raided a peaceful farming village of Bonemen, raped the women, and killed the men. But the major races write the history books.
The ex-adventurer general, of course, turned out to be part of the raiding party, and the father of at least one of the half-breed bandits. The players also learned the general obtained an ancient and powerful world-eater machine he wanted to use, along with his Hoplite army, in his personal campaign against the Throtts to wipe them out completely, but in doing so stood to destroy the entire underground.
The campaign's climax was an all-out war between the Hoplites and the Throtts. The half-breeds all ended up dead, either from the battle or from previous attacks on the Hoplites, but in the end they fought alongside the players. They weren't good and pure, but they weren't straight evil either, and they were admirable in a way, always standing for what they thought was right.

tl;dr: Ethically confusing campaign and morally-ambiguous quasi-villains turn out to be more complex than simple good-guy/bad-guy.

I like doing "subraces" of humans.

You get to use the same stats, but they can have totally wild cultures and different physical characteristics, and people will view them as being no more human than orcs or gnomes.

In my most recent setting, the standard human is called Tyrrianese. They have bright eyes, fair skin, and red or blonde hair. They sit in the middle of a big Australia-like lump of a continent, imposing a stuffy and slightly corrupt but generally peaceful continent-wide order.

Only armies march near the shore.

The Gll'vatch live on ships, dirty coarsair savages with their bloody rituals and wild songs that sometimes ride the sea breezes to shore at night and haunt the dreams of the Tyrrianian long patrol, living on fishflesh and never knowing growing things. They own the seas. They're savage sub-humans with red eyes, black hair and dusky, almost brown skin. They never negotiate, they never reason: if they see a Tyrrianian (a "human") they just spit curses in their own weird tongue and attack with their wicked weapons. They come to land to raid any brave settlements built too close to shore, and to try to make a foothold from which to launch attacks deeper into the continent, forcing the Tyrrianians to march to the beaches and drive them back into the sea.

No one remembers when peace was attained by turning the strange coastal nation of Gall'va- with it's weird, witching religion and it's warm hand to foreigners- into the common enemy and literally driving them off of the map.

that is the island everything takes place on after this stuff.

The top right land mass is the area the history I have written is in.

I am terrible with names so they are random, not listed, or being changed.

what you need to know to make sense of this.

ZOD: is a creator god using this area of the cosmos to rise to a greater god and goto greater god florida to retire

Elmentus: is zod's good son, and creates the primordians, the good race of the 3 initial races

Phinoa: zod's daughter, neutral goddess and creator of the fish people, they are the neutral race accordingly

Sol: Zod's evil son, he creates the evil demon type guys.

Their are four elemental titans each ascribed to the classical elements of greek mythology,

    Earth
    Fire
    Water
    and Wind

they are the natural force at work in this location and are opposed to ZOD and his children as in the past this kind of stuff usually leads to cataclysmic events that destroy the planets.

To prepare for the god's inevitable fuck ups, the titans create dwarves, and giants, of their elemental alignments out of the earth, so not fully alive like the god's creations. They have the giants build the outer frames, and the dwarves the inner workings, of their defenses. These defenses are colossi, which are demi gods of the minor elemental/cross elemental portfolios eg. steam, acid, dust... that kind of shit.

The first 3 races cross breed a lot and that leads to the latter races.

Icythillera is the first dragon and is unstable which leads to her ability to be on par with the gods and titans in power.

First World War 1st 1000ish years

    The Gods Agenda
Demons try to take over the world, good guys stop them. Tree of Life dies.
Tardassian leaves a Primordian daughter on the planet, Azmayone.
Neutral Avatar leaves a Fish-Folk son.

Proto-Elves created from offspring of Primordian and Fish-Folk.

    The Titans Agenda
The Titans began their plans to counter the inevitable destruction of their planet.
They created the Stone Giants and Stone Dwarves to construct their ultimate weapons the Colossi.
They Begin Construction of the Demi Elemental Titans, and the first Colossus Icythillera.
Icythillera (1st Dragon) was built by the Giants and Dwarves like all other Colossi but she was given a fragment of each of the Titans power.
She was given life by sacrificing the lives of a Primordian, Fish Folk, and Demon to be her spirit.

    Icythillera's Agenda
Upon gaining sentience, Icythillera's first action was creating her first brood of kin.
Her first brood included Red, Blue, and Yellow dragons.
Death Of The Tree Of Life

    Jebus leaves. Powermongering ensues.
Elmentus and Sol battle of Earf. Elmentus wins and banishes both from entering it again.
Mana solidifies due to the stress of Elmentus and Sol's battle creating the mana stones.

    ce Age 2nd 10000 years

    The Gods Agenda
Phinea disbands her race taking the faithful to her plane and leaving the others to devolve into the sea life.
Proto-Elves are the only remaining successful surface dwelling race.
Primordians remain in the desert, and underground.
Mind Flayers formed from breeding of remaining Demons and Fish Folk.
Flayers establish dominance on Frozen Continent. (Antrartica)
Both Proto-Elf forces one under Marseth (Continent A) and one under Ermeth (Continent C) had caused mother fucking nuclear winter.
Allessia (first elf) is born to Haethi parent from Phinea, restoring the planets condition.

    Icythillera's Agenda
She was growing tired of her initial children's petty concerns, and sought to make a second brood.
Her Second Brood included Green , Orange, Purple (Time) dragons.
She also saw the growing worship in the humanoids communities for their creators and grew envious.
This lead her to try her own hand at creating a humanoid race fit to worship her and her children.
Her early attempts were mostly failures but in mixing the essences of Tardassian with that of her new giants, she created Humans.
She deemed them insufficient and cast them out to die due to their seeming lack of potential.

    The Titans Agenda
Having finished the Demi Elemental Colossi, the Titans moved on to sabatoge the God's creations, and create their terrestrial Colossi.
They noticed Icythillera's growing disdain for the Gods and saw this as an opprotunity to make her the buffer for their coming conflicts.
They saw it fit to supply her with a lair and their giants and dwarves too help her finish her plans.
At this point they had their giants work on the construction of Olymnous in preparation for their sealing off of the planes.

    World War 2

Marseth and Ermeth caused a ruckus.
    Age of the Elves

    The God's Agenda
Allessia was instantly cognizant of her goddess status and took it upon herself to create a race to replace the Proto-Elves.
She created the Wood Elves to continue the work of sustaining the world which drew some attention from the Titans.
Some Wood Elves were lured by the power of the mana stones and corrupted by them.
Allessia created the High Elves to sustain magic in response.
This led to two major kingdoms on the same opposing continents the old proto-elf empires encompassed.
Until the demons escaped their island prison.
The Wood Elves and High Elves got rolled due to being under preprared for such a threat.
Allessia created her third and last race to meet this new threat. These were the Moon Elves.
The Moon Elves were highly adept in using Proto-Elf and Primordian magic which was able to match the Demons.
Within 1,000 years the elves had liberated all the territory the Demons had conquered.
The Demons retreated to their hidden lairs back on Einsieng.

    The Titans Agenda.
The Titans activated the Olymnous portal and began to send their colossi and giants in
Their goal was to build gateways preventing the flow of Divine Magic from escaping the planes.
This effectively shut off the God's from the Prime.

    Icythillera's Agenda
Upon noticing the Elve's, Icythillera became convinced that they would be the ragdoll for her followers.
She swooped up some elves and through her twisted machinations she created the Dark Elves.
She waas pleased with her new creation and began her workings in becoming a God to them.

    Holy shit, that's fucking awesome.
    I love you.
Really captured the whimsical, aloof sort of atmosphere that becomes only mildly worrying when attributed to the God of Creation.
    Bravo, sir. Bravo.

Now this is fucking want. I love animated objects. Hell, a setting that's a land where everything (or most everything) is alive, ala H.R. Puff'n'Stuff, would be interesting.

Try fighting a living wind or living flame with a living sword, and it working (and vice versa of course).

Dwarfs are, in this interpretation, essentially elementals of a physical universe. Sentiency born from nature and fed by it.
I suppose angels would be their opposition: spiritual beings, twisting and formless - created from abstract ideas and reason rather than natural intuitivity. Men are the go-between; the agents of heaven in a place where angels cannot tread.

The Goblin tribes customs, faith,Area,Ideals, Change Tribe to tribe and the currently Ruling Matriarch. Now To breed Their is born a Goo'ta (Princes) Now Each "prince" Duty to Travel to each tribe to keep relation s among each tribe and sleeping with the Matriarch to keep Ganetic Diversy from getting too thing. The odd thing I added to my Goblins that their scared or compelty escapes their mind of "owning land" All land to them is the in the hand of the head female.

Really funny you should say that.
The Neverhood is the game that inspired me to get into worldbuilding in the first place.

I'm on my third campaign set in the world I've been building, my players and I have been playing in it for almost 2 years now, and we're all constantly building onto it. Really, it's just a manifestation of the desire to play a fantasy world other than one filled with elves and dwarves.

I can't remember. I think I just wanted a giant vortex of death.

Also, thinking about taking Gunnbjondur, that Hawaii looking thing in the corner, and making it and Zaptlizoc into a new continent to the east. Sort of like the New World. If I did that I might actually use the Kobali, an Orc race that lives in the jungles and are like the Mayans and the Incans and such.

    One world, all settings.

The western continent consists largely of the Human Empire and the Elven Kingdom. The drawves mine the mountain ranges, while the Gnomish Protectorate is supported by the Free Lands where the halflings and various mercenary groups reside. The Human Empire and the Elen Kingdoms are are at war.

While this sounds traditional, when you learn the elves have monks, ninjas, and modified samurai types (modified to increase their playability), it becomes a little stranger. Then the Shadowfell is where all that is dark and gloomy develops, where a sinister incursion continues, held off by the rangers and druids.

The incursion is partly an astronomical event and an unclased gate to darker realms (whatever I think the players might enjpy, far realm, shadowlands, one of the other planes).

The eastern continent is home of an Epic level civilization, where the noblilty consists of gestalt characters, and there are 13 decadent city states under the control of the high lord, slected by one of the 13 ruling families but independant of all of them. These are the people who started te war on the other continent, in preparation for expansion.

There are various pockets of nomadic psychics of a race indeterminant, a few of whom are seemingly immortal, others who are mere ghosts. They exist on both continents, while the Blessed Isles are a bastion of Exhalted beings while the deep arctic mountains host things better left undisturbed and left to theiir Vile practices.

Each local has a set of core classes unique to it; the eatern continent replaces fighter with swashbuckler, mage with tantrist, sorcery with warlock; the elven empire replaces paladin with duskblade, rogue with ninja, druid with spirit shaman; if you come froma culture, the other core classes are unusual and different and shunned by that society.

This.. has some pretty cool ideas, especially near the beginning (I REALLY like the titans making giants and dwarves to be smiths for their quasi-elemental collosi), but I think the setting near the beginning sounds a lot cooler than what you finally end up with.

Too much uninteresting history goes by and it ends up looking too much like generic fantasy. It would be more fun to play durring the time of the Titans.
