Sup, Fa/tg/uys. Some of you might remember several months ago when I posted a thread about my paladin/sorcerer acquiring an erinyes that she set out to redeem, along with various updates since then involving the paladin's assassin sister selling her soul to another devil, and the paladin getting in trouble for destroying a fiery artifact magic book.

Well, it's finally happened, the erinyes has changed her alignment to good. Since enough people tended to be interested in the previous stories and wanting updates, here's what happened in the latest adventure when it occured:

The paladin and erinyes were strolling around town when they were accosted by a man wanting to speak to the paladin (the PCs are all part of the city's elite guard unit in this game), where he told her that his lover had been kidnapped by a brutish ruffian two days ago who said he'd kill the damsel if he saw any guards approaching his house - the guy said he was too scared to go to the guard, but since the paladin was so uber, maybe she could rescue his lover before the thug had a chance to kill her.

The story seemed a bit bullshit, and a good sense motive roll confirmed he was lying, prompting me to check for evil which was confirmed (albeit faint). Thinking it was a diversion either to lure me into an ambush, or get me out of the way while some other crime went down, I asked the erinyes to go back to the paladin's house to watch over her amnesiac assassin sister in case someone went after her while I was distracted (since the sister had tried to kill the beloved archbaron, she was very unpopular, but somewhat saved by the fact that few knew what she looked like, and she was going by a different name since losing her memories), and then asked one of the other guards around town to follow the dude while I went off to investigate the kidnapping - even if it reeked of bullshit, it wasn't something I could completely ignore.

Anyway, visiting the thug's house, I found out that he and the 'victim' were happily engaged to be married, and rather cloyingly sweet and lovey-dovey to boot. Further questioning revealed that the guy who sent me off on this wild goose chase was a former suitor of the girl, and one she regretted ever having any involvement with.

Seemed like a rather pathetic case of a jilted lover trying to inconvenience the one who spurned him, so I relaxed my worries a bit, simply resolving to have the guy arrested and fined for wasting the guard's time. Checking in with the guard I had following him, I found out that he'd skipped town immediately after talking to me, and the guard hadn't followed him past the gates. So about all I could do was just have his description put around so that if he did show up, he could be arrested.

Two days later, I got word that he'd been detained entering town, and this is where things get interesting...

Visiting his cell, the paladin gave him a sanctimonious lecture on wasting her time (like the stuff you hear about not calling 999 - or 911 if you're an American - for prank calls), and he seemed suitably abashed and offered to shake her hand while apologising. My bullshit senses were blaring full blast, but I figured even if he did do something sneaky, he's just a mook while I'm an awesome gish with superhuman strength and insanely good saving throws - besides which, the paladin is a very polite person, so she shook his hand.

And promptly failed her saving throw vs fiendish possession as the guy grinned and said he had a message, that "They never forget or forgive."

Fortunately I had time to make an action before the possession took hold completely, and casting Dispel Magic seemed to stall it - leaving her arm all fucked up and evil, but the rest of her okay. Wasting all her 3rd level spells on dispels didn't budge it any further, though, and freaking out a bit, she resorted to making a Smite Evil unarmed attack against herself by punching her evil-tainted arm. That did the trick, dislodging the Corruption Devil (custom monster, it's basically a weaker Barbed Devil that can go ethereal and possess people), which was swiftly slain.

The unlucky messenger was pretty freaked out by this turn of events, and intimidation quickly got him to spill his guts.

Revealing that he'd met with an erinyes and a hellcat, and offered his services in bringing the paladin to them in exchange for 'a bag of gold and the woman he loved'. The kidnapping story was made with the intent of getting the paladin to kill an innocent by charging in blindly and slaying the 'kidnapper', precipitating her Fall. Seeing the murder in the paladin's eyes, and the sword-tip poking between the bars of his cell, he was only to quick to reveal their location, at an abandoned farmhouse fifteen miles out of town.

Swiftly getting some NPCs to guard the house of the woman in case any devils came by to dominate or charm her, I rounded up the party to take action. Luckily the rogue/wizard had recently acquired some pegasi, which would let us get to the devils' hideout before they had a chance to realise their plan had failed. The pegasi weren't too keen on having the erinyes tag along (nor was she keen to ride one), but some sweet talking from the paladin convinced both to play nice, and we were away.

Warned by the erinyes that the devils would likely have traps and firm defences in place against interlopers, I hit upon the fun idea of landing on the roof of the three storey building and smashing an entrance in from there to blitz our way downwards, possibly even getting a chance to use some of their traps against them.
    >> Anonymous 01/20/08(Sun)08:00 No.1042513
    CONTINUED

The GM chuckled when I announced this plan, and upon smashing our way in we found ourselves in an alcohol soaked attic and confronting an erinyes blackguard. He immediately dropped a glass covered candle which ignited the alcohol, setting fire to the entire third floor. There was barely time for any banter at all before we attacked him, and a crit from my paladin ensured he died in the first round, with the erinyes cohort getting the killing blow against her fellow devil.

Due to all the fumes and fire starting to inflict damage, we knocked out a window and jumped outside, using feather fall to land safely, and then swiftly eliminated the remaining minor devils that came barrelling out of the burning building. According to the GM, the plan was that we'd walk in the front door and fight our way through several encounters and debilitating traps before we reached the third floor and would then have to confront the boss in a weakened state as the place started to burn around us.

As we returned home, the erinyes confessed that it had felt good to kill the other erinyes, but before she could elaborate further she collapsed and started coughing up blood. Some lay on hands from the paladin only had a minor effect as she remained comatose for the rest of the journey back to the city.
    >> Anonymous 01/20/08(Sun)08:00 No.1042515
    CONTINUED

Swiftly getting a friendly cleric of Tempus to show up after we landed, we got him to give her some healing along with a Bear's Endurance spell to hopefully help her resist what was happening, as her suffering seemed to intensify with weeping bloody wounds opening all over her body as she convulsed and vomited blood, crying out for someone to end the pain as 'they' tore her apart. Meanwhile her evil aura dimmed from strong to moderate, and then to faint, to the paladin's senses.

After an uncomfortably powerless wait for everyone else as she endured this, the erinyes finally went limp, mustering enough consciousness to explain that it was Hell's punishment for breaking ranks, that they had ripped 'it' out, and she could no longer perform any magic - she struggled to use one of her spell-like abilities (I'd removed the true name restriction on her using them a while ago after she killed the dogai sent to kill the paladin) to demonstrate with no success. Further investigation showed that she at least retained her telepathy and see in darkness ability, and removal of the disguise hat that made her pass for human showed that her fiendish wings remained, although her eyes had changed colour from a bloody red to a vibrant blue.

After the session which ended about there, the GM congratulated me on redeeming a devil, having now shifted her alignment to Lawful Good, with the caution that Hell was now insanely pissed off and bent on my destruction for it.

I expect she'll still probably be quite messed up in the head, but the hard part's over now.

I never saved any of the previous stories, sadly, but someone archived the 'paladin's assassin sister sells her soul' story which can be read here:

    http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/870457/

As a summary, however, the erinyes had dominated a gold dragon and was intending to carve out a small kingdom for herself after escaping Hell, which is currently undergoing an upheaval in this setting.

The paladin attacked her while the gold dragon was raping the rest of the party, and she offered her surrender, which the paladin accepted in order to prevent either the other PCs or the gold dragon being killed.

After she surrendered, the wizard/rogue backstabbed her while she was being interrogated, so the paladin had to step in in her defence. Desperate not to go back to Hell, and also sensing a juicy target for corruption, the erinyes offered her services to the paladin, hinting that she could possibly be redeemed.

The paladin thought that was a hilarious concept, and after brow-beating her true name out of her to enforce some ground rules, accepted.

Since then, over various adventures she's been debating morality with the erinyes, who over time started acting in a helpful and selfless manner, even as she vigorously denied or rationalised her actions. She became Lawful Neutral after the story linked above.

Yeah, she's an Outsider with the Evil, Extraplanar, and Lawful subtypes. That means she'll always radiate Law and Evil to detection spells (and suffer the effects of spells that target those alignments, like Holy Smite and Chaos Word) regardless of her 'true' alignment. She'll also radiate Good to detection spells, though, and suffer full damage from say an Unholy Blight spell. It's the worst of both worlds.

Bonus points for your GM if managing to redeem an Eryines gets heaven happy enough to send you nice things, which pisses hell off because they see that as heaven 'cheating' in their prepetual standoff, resulting in this paladin and the eryines becoming the focal points of minor skirmishes between the sides that eventually escalate into full-blown war between the two planes.

    We can't all be Sameo.

Anyway, it took about 4 months of RPing, and probably a bit longer in IC time. Basically through it all the paladin's been picking at the erinyes prejudices and both explaining and demonstrating why lawful good is the 'best' alignment along with going over all the flaws and pitfalls of being evil. Since they at least mesh on appreciating law, it gave her a foothold to show off the benefits of goodness that make pure logical sense, rather than making flowery 'love freak' appeals to emotion.

It wasn't really a sudden epiphany of 'I am good, now!' thanks to a single dramatic action, but rather the culmination of a long process of conversion.

    Here's my thoughts:

The fact that it was an erinyes, which is a sexy, female, humanoid creature, makes it feel much less "heroic" as opposed to if it were some ugly monstrous horror. Both are equally evil, but since the other is an erinyes, the so called "male reaction" to the situation is that it's more innocent, which is rubbish.

Also, as an erinyes it's had hundreds of years of lawful evil lifestyle which it saw as the right way to do things. Why would it suddenly(in less than a year) change so radically. It seems very unlikely that it would just be "Oh shit, I've been wrong all my life, despite being born this way due to my previous life. Lol"

Had it been an ogre or some such creature that isn't inherently evil, it would've been much better in my opinion. Obviously, as can be seen, this is an opinion most of you don't seem to share.

Have you ever met a Scientologist? Did you ever wonder, as the person spouted off about the wonders of Dianetics, what could possibly convince someone to cling onto such an insane system that likely flies in the face of everything they'd have been taught in their life before taking that free stress test?

The erinyes was converted in much the same way as people join cults. She was removed from her home environment and any other lawful evil beings that could help bolster her psyche, while the paladin continually and constantly preached at her while she was alone and vulnerable, deconstructing her old mindset and building up a new one in its place.

    It's pretty awesome.

Roleplayed. I didn't make a single diplomacy check on her (although I asked the GM to do secret sense motive vs bluff rolls if she ever lied and let me know if I should detect bullshit), it was all done through exhaustive debates, rewarding good behaviour, and leading by example.

I pretty much had to give her enough rope to hang herself, so she actually had quite a few chances to kill or betray me quite cleanly, but those only started coming after her first selfless act, and she proved trustworthy (even if intensely bitchy and foul tempered) throughout.

Well, I'm sure there's been lots of planning along the way, but the initial trigger was certainly a surprise to the GM brought about by the rogue/wizard's unexpected backstab of the prisoner and the paladin's overabundance of responsibility towards anyone who surrenders to her.

Since then we've pretty much been winging it, although the GM has said that he occassionally made secret percentile rolls to determine her reactions to certain events, and I got lucky with a few of them.

In a campaign a while back we looked through a dimension gate and saw a balor RIGHT on the other side. It didn't notice us, and the DM obviously thought that we, three level 17 players, would probably not screw with a balor. Instead of that I jumped through and cast Sanctify the Wicked on it. Needless to say it didn't work very well, and I died. Your attempt at redeeming evil creatures went much better than mine.
